00:00Well I'm so excited to be playing Essence. To me it is the premiere black music festival.
00:07It feels like I'm a part of history. I'm playing with legends and I've never been to Essence
00:14and so to go as a performer for my first time is like I couldn't have even imagined.
00:22My voice and my style doesn't really have a genre anymore and we just have to say it's pop
00:27because it just blends into all of these different like land soundscapes.
00:33And if I feel like sounding kind of like ya ya ya you know if I feel like kind of talking on a record
00:40and just being like hey girl whoo child tired of the bullshit like I can do that
00:45or if I feel like screaming and singing worship me and trying to hit Aretha notes trying keyword
00:52I'm a do that you know and I think that the human voice is an instrument.
01:01My DJ, Sofia Aris and the big girls.
01:04We thrive live and it started from us opening for a lot of bands and having to get their attention.
01:11And now it's just like a part of it. It's a part of the energy and it's a part of you know what we do.
01:17You know it's a part of our style. We just take the energy and kind of convert it you know from the crowd to the from me.
01:26It's an energy transfer.
01:28It's so important for the black woman to hear you know words of encouragement and songs of empowerment
01:34and self-love and self-care to be a part of Essence Festival and for all of these beautiful black women
01:40and beautiful black people to receive this is honestly never happened for me.
01:45I play for predominantly like white crowds or like feminist crowds white feminist crowds.
01:50And so to write to play for my people which this is who I'm writing songs for because I this is my only experiences as a black person.
01:58It is definitely like a game changer for me. I'm so excited.
02:02I've always been very proud to be black. I've never ever wanted to be anything else or I never you know wished like I wish I was just light skinned or do you know I'm saying like I always found beauty in myself and I think that that's rare.
02:22Finding the love for myself and finding self-care was definitely a journey but I've always just been so proud to be a black woman.
02:30And I think discovering that there's little things that I need to do to maintain my joy and to maintain my sanity and to maintain my body and to maintain you know the sanctity in my heart.
02:41Like I think that those are things that black women who are discovering self-love should find this era of reclaiming you know black womanhood you know black female pride you know what I'm saying.
02:57We out here.
