Charli Penn gets candid about Black Women and Equal pay
Transcript
00:00I don't know about you guys, but my girlfriends and I talk about a lot.
00:04In fact, we talk about almost everything.
00:06But when it comes to money, it gets a little quiet.
00:09Do you notice that too?
00:12I think so many of us are uncomfortable talking about money with our peers
00:16because money is like a quantifiable way to say, like, this is what I'm worth.
00:20Success. Right? Like, this is what success looks like.
00:22How many of us would look back at 25 and think,
00:27damn, I missed having that negotiation conversation that set my salary at a certain place.
00:33I have the scale, right, when you're negotiating.
00:35So it's the OMG number.
00:37Like, oh, my God, did they actually say yes to that?
00:39Oh, my God, they said yes.
00:41Yeah, we do.
00:43And it's only happened twice that I got the OMG.
00:46How do you determine your OMG?
00:47Like, how do you understand what your value is in the market?
00:50Aggregate all of your information from online.
00:53You talk to friends. You just do your research.
00:56So I know what it pays.
00:57Exactly.
00:58I know what I bring to the table.
00:59Right.
01:00And so what's up?
01:01My friend Toni, she'll do her market research, right?
01:03Go to salaries, glass store, and then she'll find four white men,
01:06ask them what they're making, and then she adds 10% to that.
01:09When we know, as black women, we're only making what, what is it?
01:12Like, 68 cents to a white man's dollar.
01:14These are conversations we need to be having.
01:16We have to have them.
01:17Take the word back to your sister circles.
01:19Should we have more of them?
01:20No, because we all kind of admitted in the beginning that we're not.
01:23Not enough, at least.
01:24Yeah.
01:25Yeah.
01:26And we need to find, I think, new ways to foster those conversations
01:28that we were talking about.
01:29Everything else.
01:30Yeah.
01:31But I appreciate you guys.
01:32Absolutely.
