00:00I believe it was around noon yesterday we got a call to the Guthrie residence that Nancy Guthrie, 84 years old, was missing.
00:14We expended a lot of resources for a missing person that we typically always do.
00:21Our search and rescue volunteers, our search and rescue teams, other agencies, Boar Star from Border Patrol sent their canines out.
00:31They worked tirelessly all day yesterday and all day tonight.
00:37I'm sorry, all day yesterday and all last night to no avail.
00:45As I said yesterday, we saw some things at the home that were concerning to us.
00:53We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime.
01:02And we're asking the community's help.
01:06This community has always stepped up to help us solve some pretty tough crimes.
01:13I'm looking for that again.
01:17This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of medication.
01:32Medication that if she doesn't have in 24 hours, it could be fatal.
01:37So we make a plea to anyone who knows anything about this, who has seen something, heard something, to contact us.
01:49Call 911.
01:51We don't need another bad, tragic ending.
02:00We need some help.
02:01Our team is the best.
02:06I couldn't speak any higher.
02:09I think you know that.
02:10We have done some great work with our partners in the Valley.
02:16You know, this community, I have to give a lot of thanks to our law enforcement agencies all across this Valley,
02:23whether it's the Tucson Police Department or some of the smaller agencies.
02:28They've all reached out.
02:30They've all offered to assist.
02:32The FBI, all of them.
02:36We work so close with them, and they are all plugged in.
02:39We'll continue to work closely with them.
02:41But what I really need is I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls.
02:49Let us know if you've seen something.
02:51We are right now at a time, and I apologize, everybody tells me I talk too softly.
03:02We are at a time where, in this investigation, we are now moving forward where we need to depend on technology.
03:11You know, our license plate readers, our camera systems throughout the community, anything, everything.
03:18And we will download all that data we have from the home, from different pieces of technology we've gotten,
03:27and we will use that to our advantage.
03:29But the reason I bring this up is that, you know, I'm a cop.
03:33I hate politics.
03:34But I have to remind our political leaders that they need to quit this banter of every time law enforcement leaders come to you for a need,
03:46that you give up these ridiculous remarks about how it's going to be misused.
03:53AI is a bad, evil word.
03:56The cameras are very bad and evil.
03:58I'm tired of that.
03:59Those tools in the right hands with the right minds and the right approaches are extremely valuable to solving crimes just like this.
04:09We need that.
04:11We need more staffing.
04:14We need a lot of things.
04:15But what I really need is I need the committee's help with this.
04:18So I want to make sure I didn't, before I take any questions, it is a crime scene.
04:26We know that.
04:26If she needs her daily medication, and anybody that sees anything, that even looks, hey, maybe that's her, just take a quick picture.
04:41Take a video.
04:43Send it to us.
04:44The number is real easy here locally.
04:45It's 911.
04:47You can contact our 88 crime and remain anonymous.
04:51You can call me, anybody.
04:55I am here to take any questions you may have.
04:59It will be a little limited.
05:00I apologize for that, but we do have a crime that we need to protect its integrity.
05:06I have here Sergeant David Stivers from our homicide team.
05:10He has been up all night, so bear with us if we are a little bit fuzzy in our answers and responses.
05:17But we're both here for any questions you may have.
05:21Let's start, please.
05:22She has recognized your limitations, but can you elaborate at all on what makes you believe it's a crime scene as opposed to someone who left home and just couldn't find her with that?
05:31Well, I think I told you she is very limited in her mobility, right?
05:35We know she didn't just walk out of there.
05:37That we know.
05:38There are other things at the scene that indicate there was a – she did not leave on her own.
05:49We know that.
05:50If you're not at plate readers, is there a vehicle associated with it?
05:53When I told you we're now at the phase where we're looking at all the technology, all of that is being evaluated as we speak.
06:01Let me say this, we've not just thrown our search and rescue team out there.
06:08They are going to be doing some door-to-door with our criminal investigation team.
06:12It is not just our homicide unit, all of our criminal investigation detectives.
06:17I went out last night to the scene.
06:19There were probably 100 cars out there, all from the sheriff's department, all working this case.
06:23It takes a lot of manpower and a lot of energy.
06:28This team of mine worked throughout the night.
06:30They continue to work.
06:32David's had zero sleep, but he and his team are working as hard as they can.
06:39Is there anybody else associated with her, a caregiver, a family member, acquaintance, who is also missing?
06:46No, no, no, no.
06:48The family, all of the family has been very cooperative with us.
06:51They're working with us.
06:52They're staying in touch with us.
06:54They have complete access to anybody on this department.
06:57Savannah has been in touch with us as well.
07:03Our hearts go out to them.
07:07This is their mom.
07:08She's just a great lady, from what I've heard, and I feel for the family.
07:16We just want to find her and bring her back safe.
07:22Sheriff, you mentioned that she didn't just walk out.
07:26Is there any additional information that you can give us on what may have alluded to this being a crime scene?
07:35You know, I wish I could.
07:36I really do.
07:38I know that everybody wants to know certain things.
07:41But I can't do that for the, just, it would be inappropriate at this time.
07:49Are there signs of breaking and entering in, or any force entering in there?
07:52I'm not, I, again, don't want to get into that.
07:54David, do you, can you see anything here?
07:57Do you?
07:57At this time, it's still a very active investigation that we, there were circumstances on scene that, that we believe are, are suspicious in nature, I think is the best way to put it.
08:12But we can't really get into a whole lot of details with that.
08:15Do you believe that this was targeted, or they just happened to be Savannah Guthrie's mom, or if this was just a local brand?
08:23We don't know that.
08:24We don't, we, we, we look at all of that, but we just don't know that.
08:27Do they have cameras at the home?
08:30They do, and we're looking through some of that.
08:33Would this be an active privacy to bury from the general public?
08:37Trying to figure out my phone.
08:40Well, you know, no, I don't think there's an active threat.
08:45But I hate to say that because, you know, we're going to canvas that neighborhood, and maybe there's a prowler that's been seen around.
08:53There's a lot of work still to do.
08:55We don't have any indication that, that the public is in danger.
09:00And what does that search look like today beyond what you've already told us about last year?
09:04So we have, we have shut down our search and rescue mission, and we've given them, sent them home to rest.
09:12They were out all night.
09:16Look, we put all our air assets into this, our drone systems, our, our aircraft, our helicopters, heat sensors, infrared, everything we've had, we've thrown at this.
09:28They're going to step aside.
09:30We'll call them out again if we need to, to do more searching.
09:34But right now, we don't see this as a search mission as much as we do a crime scene.
09:39Sheriff, can you tell us a little bit about that map?
09:43That is, and David probably can better answer it than I, but that is our search patterns, I believe.
09:49Is that correct?
09:50Yes.
09:50So with all the assets that we deployed yesterday with the search and rescue teams, the map that's on the screen is basically tracks that were followed.
10:00Those are all, the colored lines are all ground tracks of different teams and different assets that were used on the ground to include the canines, the volunteers, and our own search and rescue team.
10:13The circles are going to be representative, if not necessarily perfect, of our air circulation with both our helicopter and our fixed-wing aircraft at night working with the night time cameras.
10:30So difficult to see where the house is.
10:33The house is basically pretty close to center in that, and then all of the searching that went on throughout the day with those folks out there on the ground.
10:42What this really helps with is our search teams, when they come back and reassess, maybe they've missed an area, we can look at it and say, hey, you know what, this area could use a little more coverage, and so they concentrate again.
10:54Our search and rescue team is top-notch.
10:56They're out every single day.
10:59If it's not a lost person, it's a hiker, it's somebody who's wandered away from a care home, whatever it may be.
11:05I want to stress to you, and it is really important,
11:09Miss Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie, is of great sound mind.
11:16This is not a dementia-related.
11:18She is as sharp as a tack.
11:20The family wants everybody to know, this isn't somebody who just wandered off.
11:25Her physical limits are based on just age, and we get old, and so it's more physical.
11:35But clearly, she is as sharp as a tack.
11:39Do you have her cell phone, and does that prevent, present any tracking potential?
11:42We're looking at that as we speak.
11:44But do you have it, or do you not?
11:46We do have it.
11:47Can you give us a little bit more of a timeline?
11:49Because you said she didn't leave on her own, that she was last in at 9.45.
11:54She wasn't reported missing until we leave.
11:57I believe what happened there was at 9.45 in the evening, her children left her off.
12:05At some time earlier that morning, they got a call from somebody at the church who said,
12:10hey, your mom's not here.
12:12The family went to the house, I'm thinking, they spent some time looking for her themselves
12:19before they called us, so I'm guessing maybe they got there around 11.
12:23So they did some searching and realized we need some help, and they called 911.
12:28Do you have any idea what time Nancy would have been taken from the home?
12:33There's a lot of things working there, and I just can't say that right now.
12:37Has Savannah got three, or has she had any threats to herself?
12:44We've spoken to her.
12:46We'll continue to work with that.
12:48She has a security team that's been in touch with us throughout the night.
12:52But we're not going to dismiss any angles for sure.
12:56But right now, immediately, we don't know of anything like that.
13:00Is she in town or on the way here?
13:01She's here.
13:03Can you give us any more?
13:04What should somebody be looking for?
13:06Because when I was out in the neighborhood, the neighbors are obviously incredibly concerned.
13:10But is there anything, a tip?
13:12I mean, one neighbor stopped me, and he didn't know if he should call you or not.
13:16Oh, my goodness.
13:17What should somebody be looking for?
13:19Well, first of all, I'd ask them, go through their cameras.
13:23Go through their ring cameras, whatever cameras they may have.
13:26Don't dismiss it that, oh, well, we really can't see the house.
13:29They still might see something.
13:30Maybe it's somebody walking by.
13:32Maybe it's a vehicle driving by at that time of day.
13:34But go through all your cameras in that neighborhood and tell us if you see something.
13:38Maybe somebody already, we know this happens, right?
13:41Oh, I saw something suspicious, but I didn't think it was worth calling in, so I didn't call it in.
13:46Well, now it's suspect.
13:48Call in anything you've seen or heard.
13:51Maybe it's a neighbor telling you, you know, I saw this or I heard that.
13:56Call us.
13:57Don't tell the neighbor to call us.
13:58Tell the neighbor to call us, but you call us as well.
14:01We'll put it together.
14:03We'll get, trust me, we're, I'm sure we're going to get inundated with a lot of calls.
14:08We'll handle that.
14:09Did she live alone?
14:11I believe, yes, she did, yeah.
14:12Were there any caregivers who you're normally associated with her?
14:17Well, she has, she has house staff that comes by, takes care of the yard, whatever, and her house and that.
14:26But those people we'll be talking with and have talked to some of them already.
14:29But nobody is like a live-in, right?
14:31Nobody actually lives with her, no, no.
14:33Like I say, she's a great sound mind and she is mobile.
14:36It's just, it's a challenge for her to get, as the family says, she couldn't walk 50 yards by herself, so.
14:55I'm sorry.
14:58Like I said, we work closely with all of our partners, whether they're FBI, ATF, ICE, whoever.
15:06Remember, we know that they have certain capabilities and certain resources, just as we have certain capabilities and resources.
15:15So, yes, we'll continue to work with them and they've offered assistance to us.
15:21We accept that assistance and we offer assistance.
15:24Just last week, the FBI called us to handle a shooting that involved Border Patrol.
15:31That's a, you need to know that.
15:33That's just day-to-day routine work for the law enforcement in Pima County, in Tucson.
15:39We work very closely with our partners.
15:42With the amount of time that's gone by, how wide do you cast them in that?
15:44Statewide, national?
15:46Well, yes, national for sure.
15:47I'm hoping the national media's picked up on this.
15:50We've gotten a lot of reports.
15:51But statewide as well, with Amber Alerts, things like that, all of those things we use.
15:59Every tool we have, we will use.
16:02You guys are too easy.
16:09Thank you so much.
16:10I apologize for being late.
16:11I apologize for my political rhetoric of the Board of Supervisors or the City Council.
16:19So I just get so frustrated and, you know, we just can't do this job without their support.
16:27We don't need political statements from the dais and mumbo-jumbo.
16:33We need them to listen to their law enforcement leaders and really pay attention to the fact
16:41that we understand that there's a great potential for abuses in today's world with the technology
16:47that's available to us.
16:48But you have to, at some point in time, have some faith and trust in your leadership in
16:52the law enforcement community to know and understand that we, too, were elected here
16:58to provide a service to our community.
17:03I can't think of a community in this planet that wouldn't tell you, number one, is public
17:09safety.
17:10Everybody just wants to be able to know that they can go outside and enjoy their community
17:17and come home and be safe at night in their rooms, asleep in bed.
17:24And this lady wasn't able to accomplish that.
17:28That's a sad statement.
17:31We need her back.
17:33We need to find her.
17:34And time is very critical.
17:37She is 84.
17:38She needs her meds.
17:40Her family needs her, too.
17:42Thank you so much for being here.
