Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery Friday morning for early stage lung cancer, the Supreme Court confirmed in a statement.

00:03The Supreme Court confirmed that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery Friday morning
00:07for early-stage lung cancer. According to the court's public information office,
00:12Ginsburg underwent a pulmonary lobectomy at New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
00:17The statement from the Supreme Court explained that two nodules in the lower lobe of her left
00:21lung were discovered incidentally during tests performed at George Washington University Hospital
00:26to diagnose and treat rib fractures sustained in a fall on November 7. At this time,
00:30no further treatment is planned for the 85-year-old, who is resting comfortably
00:34and is expected to remain at the hospital for a few more days.
00:37Ginsburg has battled cancer twice before, once in 1999 when she was treated for colorectal cancer
00:42and again in 2009 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her latest bout with the
00:47disease comes after she was hospitalized in November for falling at her office at the court,
00:51which resulted in three fractured ribs. Her injury had a slight impact on the promotion of
00:56On the Basis of Sex, a new biopic about her early career, starring Felicity Jones.
01:01Ginsburg, who was also the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary RBG, released earlier this year,
01:06was set to participate in several On the Basis of Sex screenings and panels, but was unable to do so
01:11because of the fall. Eventually, the incomparable judge made it to a screening on December 12 in
01:15Washington, D.C., where she posed for photos with Jones, as well as Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux,
