00:00Following social media backlash, Halle Berry has pulled herself out of the running to play
00:04a transgender character in an upcoming untitled film. During an Instagram Live interview over
00:10the weekend, the Oscar-winning actress said she would quote, probably play a transgender man in
00:15her next film role, saying, the film is about a character where the woman is a trans character,
00:19so she's a woman that transitioned into a man. The news was met with heavy backlash on social
00:24media, with many people highlighting the ongoing problem in Hollywood of a cisgender actor playing
00:30a transgender person. Many also criticized that Berry repeatedly misgendered the character that
00:35she was set to play in the interview. On Monday night, Berry apologized and tweeted that she was
00:40no longer considering the role, writing, over the weekend, I had the opportunity to discuss
00:44my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I'd like to apologize
00:49for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered
00:53this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell
00:58their own stories. She added, I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past
01:03few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using
01:09my voice to promote better representation on screen, both in front of and behind the camera.
01:14Berry's decision to pull out was met with praise from GLAAD, who tweeted, we are pleased that Halle Berry
01:19listened to the concerns of transgender people and learned from them. Other powerful people should
01:24do the same. For more on this story, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Neha Joy.
