Milano ready to host Olympics, protests against ICE presence continue

Milan is ready for the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Coloured lights are being projected onto historic buildings and light installations are decorating the streets. Meanwhile, the Italian city has also been shaken by protests against the presence of ICE agents at the games.

00:10From the 6th to the 22nd of February, the Italian city will see competitions in a range of sports,
00:17such as figure skating, ski jumping and bobsleigh.
00:21While the Olympic village is slowly coming to life,
00:23posters and light installations are also bringing the multi-sport event to the heart of the city.
00:30The Games have, however, also drawn some criticism.
00:33This is notably because of the environmental impact,
00:36but also the presence of agents from the American Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
00:42Although the agents are reportedly set to be confined to a control room
00:45and only ensure the protection of American officials,
00:49their presence at the Games has drawn anger in Italy and internationally.
