00:00I was only supposed to be on every other Tuesday, but thanks to you, I'm here.
00:08Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:10And today, we're looking at celebrities who clearly weren't prepared to give a speech when their name was called at award shows.
00:16Excuse me, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it.
00:21Number 10, Jacob Elordi, 31st Critics' Choice Awards.
00:25Jacob Elordi brought humanity to Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein as the doctor's misunderstood creature,
00:32deservingly scoring a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Critics' Choice Awards.
00:37Victor, I forgive you.
00:43In a lineup that included multiple industry veterans, some assumed that the nomination was the win for Elordi,
00:49especially since his performance was from a genre picture.
00:52Horror performed well that evening, though, with the creature getting the respect he deserved.
00:58Elordi kicked off his acceptance speech, saying that he didn't plan for this.
01:02He thus kept things short and sweet.
01:04Bloody hell. Um, yeah, okay, I really didn't plan for it.
01:08Tamara, Kate, Mike, congratulations. You guys are geniuses.
01:11Still, Elordi remembered to thank the key individuals who helped make his performance possible.
01:16Costume designer Kate Hawley, makeup artist Mike Hill, production designer Tamara Deverell, and, of course, Del Toro.
01:24I love you. Uh, we all love you. Uh, you made my dreams when I was 11.
01:30Um, I'm so happy to be here. Thank you, Matt Viral. Thank you, Netflix. And thank you, Mom and Dad. Cheers.
01:35Number 9. Chris Colfer, 68th Golden Globe Awards.
01:39Chris Colfer broke out on Glee as Kurt Hummel, a role that brought him to the Golden Globes in 2011.
01:45Nominated against four other performers that ranged from broad comedy to subtle drama,
01:50Colfer ultimately seized the spotlight.
01:53As his name was announced, Colfer found himself being embraced by his co-stars with a look of disbelief on his face.
01:59Colfer was still visibly trying to comprehend what was happening as he arrived at the stage.
02:15The performer nonetheless collected himself to deliver a witticism about the future co-stars of May-December.
02:21The kids at our show celebrates who are constantly told no by the people and their environments,
02:26by bullies at school, that they can't be who they are or have what they want because of who they are.
02:30Well, screw that, kids.
02:32He went on to thank his fellow artists, as well as those who've ever felt like Kurt Hummel at school.
02:38Colfer's acceptance speech epitomized the lyric, Don't Stop Believing.
02:42It's definitely just given, um, kids a way to express themselves and, um, and, uh, given them a, um, you know,
02:49a reasonable goal to, to accomplish, you know, in a high school environment.
02:53Number 8. Jamie Bell. 54th British Academy Film Awards.
02:58This English actor was just becoming a teenager when he landed the role of 11-year-old Billy Elliot.
03:03I could feel a change in me whole body.
03:06And, like, there's fire on me body.
03:11I'm just there.
03:13Flying.
03:16Like a bird.
03:17He was 14 by the time he was nominated for Best Actor at the 2001 BAFTAs.
03:22While this was an extraordinary achievement for someone so young,
03:26the nomination seemed like it would be the climax of Jamie Bell's awards season.
03:30He was nominated against four grown men, three of whom had recently been nominated at the Oscars.
03:37Bell wasn't, making it all the more surprising when he won the BAFTA.
03:41Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe and Jeffrey Roach and Mike Douglas and all these guys.
03:45Um, and I was kind of thinking not bothering coming, um,
03:48because I just don't know, what is the point?
03:51Few were more shocked than Bell, who claimed in his acceptance speech that he considered not
03:56attending the ceremony, figuring he would lose.
03:59To this date, Bell remains the youngest person to win the Best Actor BAFTA.
04:03And really, um, thank you BAFTA as well, um, for this tremendous award.
04:07Thank you all. Thanks a lot.
04:08Number 7. Emily Blunt. 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards.
04:12Emily Blunt was a double nominee at the 2019 SAG Awards for her work in Mary Poppins Returns
04:18and A Quiet Place.
04:19No, listen to the three of you. You're all worrying far too much.
04:23After all, you can't lose what you've never lost.
04:28This seemed to indicate that Blunt would get her first Oscar nomination,
04:31but alas, the Academy overlooked her again that year.
04:34Five days after the Oscar nominations, Blunt attended the SAG Awards, prepared to go home
04:40empty-handed. While Blunt didn't win for Poppins, she'd walk away with a supporting award for playing
04:45Evelyn Abbott. The room was anything but quiet when Blunt's name was heard.
04:49Emily Blunt celebrates her first win.
04:52She's also nominated tonight for a female actor in a leading role for Mary Poppins Returns.
04:58Blunt expressed just how gobsmacked she was at the podium, searching for the right words.
05:03She dedicated much of her speech to her director-slash-husband, John Krasinski,
05:07bluntly suggesting what would have happened if he hadn't cast her.
05:11I'm so lucky to be with you and to have done this film with you.
05:16Thank you for giving me the part. You would have been in major trouble if you hadn't,
05:20so you didn't really have an option, but thank you.
05:23Number 6. Bette Midler, 37th Golden Globe Awards.
05:27While Bette Midler was already an established singer and stage actress,
05:321979's The Rose introduced her to mainstream film audiences.
05:36You just gotta, you just gotta make up, make up your mind, you're gonna stop.
05:44Before Midler knew it, she went from rising Hollywood star to winning not one,
05:49but two Golden Globes for her turn as Mary Rose Foster.
05:52Midler wasn't anticipating the industry to shower her with accolades this quickly.
05:58With nothing prepared, Bette wrestled with telling a joke about Joan Crawford's Golden Globes.
06:02She couldn't resist.
06:04She said, um, I can't do it, I can't.
06:07I have to be tasteful, they told me I was supposed to be.
06:09She said, I'll show you a pair of Golden Globes.
06:12That arguably wasn't even the cheekiest part of her impromptu speech,
06:16nearly biting into her statue as if it were a gold member.
06:20Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, I didn't mean it.
06:24Uh, I really, uh...
06:25Midler appeared just as stunned when she won a second award that night,
06:30going from incredibly chatty to speechless as she exited the stage.
06:35Uh, thank you and thanks, uh, ma and pa.
06:44Number 5. Merit Weaver, 65th Primetime Emmy Awards. There are brief acceptance speeches,
06:50and then there was Merit Weaver's at the 2013 Primetime Emmys. For her performance as Zoe
06:56Barco on Nurse Jackie, Weaver won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. It was
07:02the first category of the night, setting a tone for a ceremony with more than a few unexpected wins.
07:07This is the first Emmy win and second consecutive nomination for Merit Weaver.
07:11She cut her acting teeth at LaGuardia Arts Public High School in New York City.
07:16Weaver's victory might have been the most surprising, as evidenced by the look on her
07:20face as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler welcomed her to the stage. Saying thank you more than once,
07:26Weaver struggled to summon any more words before telling the audience that she had to go.
07:30Thank you so much. Um, I gotta go. Bye.
07:37It might have been abrupt and awkward, but Weaver's speech was also cute,
07:42to the point, and relatable for any introverts watching.
07:45Getting up there and having to make the speech.
07:46That's another thing.
07:47Where, what's different about that?
07:49Um, acting is one thing. Um, being yourself in front of a bunch of people is very, very different.
07:55Number 4. Jack Lemmon, 55th Golden Globe Awards.
07:59With Ving Rhames winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Miniseries, or Television Film,
08:04it seemed fellow nominee Jack Lemmon wouldn't be getting on stage that evening.
08:08Overcome with the spirit of giving, the tearful Rhames called up Mr. Lemmon,
08:12presenting him with the award.
08:14And I love the art in all of you here. And is, uh, is Mr. Jack Lemmon here?
08:19Is he here? Would you please come up here, sir?
08:23Although Lemmon initially resisted, he went with the flow while championing Ving's kindness,
08:28reflecting on the moment. Rhames claimed it wasn't at all planned, saying, quote,
08:33God really inspired him to give that award to Jack Lemmon.
08:37While Lemmon wound up keeping the Golden Globe,
08:40Rhames was later given a replacement.
08:41I knew that Don King was a character, but I didn't know you were crazy.
08:48That is one of the nicest, sweetest moments I've ever known in my life.
08:52Lemmon also referenced Ving's generosity two years later when he actually won a Golden Globe,
08:57following Ving's example, he decided to give the Globe to a deserving actor,
09:03Jack Lemmon.
09:04Huh? Well, in the spirit of Ving Rhames, I'm going to give this to Jack Lemmon.
09:09Anyway.
09:11Number three, Susan Lucci, 26th Daytime Emmy Awards.
09:16For years, All My Children star Susan Lucci was synonymous with the term losing streak.
09:21By 1999, Lucci had been nominated for playing Erica Kane 18 times.
09:26Guess how many times she had won.
09:28Even if you didn't watch daytime soaps, references to Lucci's losing streak invaded other facets of
09:34popular culture. Lucci even got in on the joke when she hosted SNL one year.
09:38I was cool with that. I mean, I heard some incredible people stand up at award ceremonies
09:42and say, well, I guess I'm the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. I guess I'm the Susan Lucci of
09:47Directors. And, you know, so yes, I mean, I was fine with it.
09:50Lucci believed her 19th nomination would be another loss, despite others saying this was
09:55her time. They were proven correct when presenter Shamar Moore proclaimed that the streak was over.
10:01And the outstanding diva is...
10:05The streak is over, Susan Lucci!
10:08It was a moment that Lucci genuinely started to think would never happen.
10:12Yet, there Lucci was, receiving a standing ovation as she finally got to accept this overdue award.
10:19And I promise I will try my best never to let you down.
10:23I'm going back to that studio on Monday and I'm going to play Erica Kane for all she's worth.
10:28Number 2. Taylor Swift.
10:3026th MTV Video Music Awards.
10:32On the heels of a breakthrough year, it wasn't all that surprising to see Taylor Swift accept the VMA for
10:38Best Female Video. What nobody could have predicted was Kanye West getting on stage,
10:43declaring Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time.
10:47Yo, Taylor.
10:49I'm really happy for you. I'm going to let you finish.
10:52But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.
10:54Beyonce tried to set things right when she won Video of the Year later in the ceremony,
10:59welcoming Swift on stage to deliver the speech that West rudely interrupted.
11:03It was just so wonderful and so incredibly classy of her,
11:07and just gracious and wonderful to let me say something.
11:12The rest is history. A very messy history.
11:15More than a decade and a half later, Swift is reportedly even wealthier than Beyonce.
11:19And West's VMA incident arguably isn't the most controversial stunt he's ever pulled.
11:25Regardless, this moment remains ingrained in pop culture.
11:28One that left everyone speechless. Especially Swift.
11:31For someone who's built their whole belief system on getting people to clap for you,
11:39the whole crowd booing is a pretty formative experience.

11:58Number one, Moonlight Team, 89th Academy Awards.
12:04What has to be the most surreal moment ever at an Oscar ceremony.
12:08The folks who thought they had won Best Picture and then found out that it actually
12:12belonged to another movie.
12:13While many had pegged La La Land as the Best Picture frontrunner,
12:17some predicted that Moonlight would pull off an underdog victory.
12:20There was another scenario that nobody had on their bingo sheet.
12:23As presenter Warren Beatty hesitated to announce the winner,
12:26Faye Dunaway called out La La Land.
12:29I give it to Faye and she then says what it says.
12:35And she did.
12:36Well, it looked like it said the name of the movie.
12:40The musical's producers gave their speeches as they accepted the trophies,
12:44seemingly capping off a successful Oscar night.
12:47In the vein of Columbo, there was just one more thing.
12:50Moonlight actually won Best Picture.
12:52Such a mix-up seemed unfathomable until Jordan Horowitz held up the card with Moonlight printed on it.
12:58The crowd are amazing.
13:00Matt Damon looks like he's swallowed his own teeth.
13:03With a sock.
13:06I mean, it was like they were watching their childhood homes catch fire.
13:11After Beatty tried to explain what happened, the Moonlight crew got to speak,
13:15but their speeches were largely eclipsed by the insanity that just transpired.
13:19The way everyone was talking amongst themselves,
13:22it felt like someone had had a heart attack or worse,
13:26and it felt like someone was in danger,
13:28and then I found out that they just read the wrong name.
13:31Which unplanned acceptance speech completely caught you off guard?
