00:00Arpete Devi has found a unique way of making his driving stand out. He travels everywhere
00:09in reverse.
00:10I wanted to do it and that's why I thought I had something new to do. Then I saw something
00:21new to the world. That's why I wanted to do it.
00:28Arpete's unusual style behind the wheel has been a regular sight on the roads of Bhatinda
00:33in the Indian state of Punjab since 2003. He's modified his car, a Fiat Padmini, so that
00:40it now has four gears for reverse and only one going forwards, allowing him to drive backwards
00:46at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. However, the reason he started driving in reverse in
00:51the first place was out of necessity rather than choice.
00:55After years of reversing, he now feels he's a safer driver going back to the road to the
01:02road.
01:03After years of reversing, he now feels he's a safer driver going back to the road.
01:10and has been granted special permission by the state government to allow him to continue
01:17with his unusual style. To ensure safety, he's fitted an ambulance siren to alert other drivers
01:23and pedestrians and pedestrians to the fact that he's reversing. Crucially, he's also added headlights
01:30to the rear of his car. And while driving like this has brought him fame, it's also had an
01:35adverse effect on his health as he now suffers from back and neck problems.
