00:07Lots of, there's lots of great TV on, isn't it? You know, we just said goodbye to the traitors
00:11and now The Apprentice is back. And I don't know if you're watching this series,
00:14but this time they sent the candidates to Hong Kong.
00:18Oh, what must that be like? Going to China, knowing that any week you could be fired.

00:29Look over there, it's Jessie Ware! Yes!
00:34She'll be performing her new single, I Could Get Used To This.
00:38But first, on my sofa tonight. For 25 years, this Liverpool comic has made us laugh
00:43and continues to play to sold-out arenas around the world.
00:46Now, his life story has inspired a Hollywood movie.
00:49Is this thing on? It's our good friend, Mr. John Bishop!
00:55There he is!
00:57Hello, Sarah, I'm looking forward to it. Ben!
01:00Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben!
01:04This actress has stolen the show and called classics like Mean Girls,
01:07The Notebook and About Time, and starred in the Oscar-winning drama Spotlight.
01:12Now she's fighting for survival in Sam Raimi's grisly comedy, Send Help.
01:16It is Rachel McAdams!
01:19CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

01:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:56Hello, welcome back to the show.
01:57Yes! Welcome to the show.
02:00Hello, welcome back.
02:01I hope we'll see you.
02:02Have a seat.
02:04Yay!
02:06APPLAUSE
02:08Oh, very good. They've greeted each other.
02:11You're all thinking we picked a good week.
02:13LAUGHTER
02:14Welcome, all. Lovely to see you.
02:16So welcome back to Chris and John.
02:18Now, Halle, you were on the show but not on the sofa.
02:21No, only over Zoom.
02:22Yes, in the bad old days.
02:24In the bad old days, yes.
02:26And it's a first-time welcome to Rachel in any form.
02:29Hello.
02:30Hi.
02:31Nice to be here.
02:32This is a nice thing.
02:34Chris, you are particularly fond of one of Rachel's films.
02:37My favourite film, this is a big moment for me, is Wedding Crashes.
02:41I have seen that film countless times.
02:45I'd say more than a hundred.
02:47Really?
02:48It's whether it's the...
02:51If I'm lonely on a press tour, like last night, I'll switch it on.
02:57If I'm hungover on a Sunday, it's a feel-good movie.
03:00Christmas Eve, the kids, family, friends, it's...
03:03I know most of the dialogue in every scene and inside out.
03:07I love it. It's a brilliant film.
03:09Oh, my God.
03:10I have to jump in on this, because I told her backstage,
03:12I wanted to tell this to her.
03:14I share your love of Rachel McAdams.
03:16Good. Don't we all?
03:17Yes.
03:18Wait.
03:19The Notebook is my...
03:23When I met my new guy, Van, the first time we got together, I said,
03:28we have to watch The Notebook, because if I don't have a love like this,
03:33if you don't make me feel like her, this is not happening.
03:36Wow.
03:37And I was like, and if I'm not saying, it ain't over,
03:41and if I'm not jumping around you, then this is not going to work.
03:44That is a high fictional bar.
03:48It's my go-to.
03:49When I want to cry, and when I want to feel good,
03:51and when I want to feel like I believe in love, like, that's my movie.
03:55Oh, my God.
03:56I love you in that movie so much. Thank you.
04:00And I've been waiting to tell you that, and now I get to tell her that.
04:05Well, my Rachel McAdams story.
04:10I love mean girls.
04:11I love you. Whenever I want to be a bitch, I want you.
04:19Very good.
04:21And weirdly, Halle Berry, I'm sure you're going to bond with John,
04:27because you have Liverpudlian roots, your family from Liverpool.
04:32Yes, I just told him that backstage, he thought,
04:34I thought that was not the conversation we were going to be having.
04:36I know. Can you believe that? I know.
04:39We could, in some way, be related. I said to her, it's good,
04:42because at least somebody on the couch can understand me tonight.
04:45So, who was it? It was your mum?
04:47My mum's side of the family.
04:48So, did she sound like John Bishop?
04:49No.
04:52Her family left a little too early, but that is the origin of my roots.
04:56OK. Have you been to Liverpool?
04:58No. It's not really working.
05:03When she said that to me, he said, my mum's from Liverpool.
05:06I said, oh, my God, we'll find a connection.
05:07I said, what part of Liverpool? She went, I don't know.
05:11That's where we're from.
05:12Yeah, but that's a lovely thing.
05:13I'm very proud of that.
05:14Yeah. Yeah, I'm very proud to have you.
05:16Yes.
05:19Listen, we've got lots to talk about tonight,
05:21but let's start with Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry,
05:23who bring us Crime 101.
05:25It is in cinemas from the 13th of February.
05:27And to get us in the mood, check this out.
05:34So, this is one of those great movies with an ensemble cast,
05:38multiple kind of stories that all come together.
05:40So, tell us who you both play and how your stories connect.
05:45Would you like to go first?
05:46No, you...
05:46I play a high-value jewellery thief.
05:51He's meticulous about how he plans these heists.
05:55He has a very strict code of conduct and how he operates.
05:58And there's a sort of moral ambiguity in the world he exists in.
06:02And he's on, obviously, the wrong side of the law on one hand,
06:05but he's still a good human at heart.
06:07And Mark Ruffalo's in the film as well.
06:10And the three of our stories are basically on a collision course
06:15into a pretty dramatic, climactic finale.
06:18But it's a throwback to the 70s, 80s, 90s heist films,
06:23I think we all love, with the contemporary feel.
06:25Yeah.
06:26There's complex characters, there's a deep level of emotion,
06:29but it's entertaining and it's sleek and sexy
06:32and visually pretty stunning.
06:33It is absolutely gorgeous.
06:35You are the thief, Mark Ruffalo the detective.
06:37So, Halle, who are you?
06:39Yeah, I am a high-value insurance agent,
06:44working with these insurance companies that appraise high-value assets
06:49and very wealthy people.
06:50And she has worked her whole life.
06:53What our characters share in common is,
06:55we both grew up with meager means,
06:58and we both have worked really hard to get where we are.
07:01And my character, of course, as many women as we age up,
07:06our businesses often age us out and tell us we're too old
07:10and we're no longer value.
07:12And my character decides that she's not going to accept that.
07:16She meets Davis, Chris's character, and she's facing a moral dilemma.
07:24What will she do?
07:25Will she stay on the right side of right or go to the right side of wrong?
07:30And it is interesting, because it's a thing that links all those three characters.
07:34All of us. It's sort of like sliding doors.
07:36We all intersect with each other at certain times throughout the movie,
07:40and we find out that we have a lot more in common than you would think that we would have.
07:43Yeah. And it's interesting, you know, you've made so many movies over the years,
07:47and I heard you in an interview saying that,
07:48actually, this is one of your happiest working experiences.
07:50Oh, this was amazing. And, you know, when you've done it 30 years,
07:54when you say this has been one of my all-time bests, that's really saying something.
07:58These guys, Chris, Mark, Bart, Barry, all of them, I mean, my feet did not hit the ground.
08:05And I say that because you've heard people talk about stories of all the horror things
08:08that have gone wrong in our industry. Not the case here.
08:11Like, I have never felt more seen, respected, cared for, stood up for, protected,
08:17than I did on this movie with all of these men.
08:20It was, I hope, we're going to do Crime 103.
08:24Mark, Chris, and I are going to do Crime 103.
08:28And, look, I knew you probably enjoyed making this movie, Chris,
08:31because you like driving and there's a lot of driving.
08:34A lot of driving, yeah. And you do it.
08:36I do, yeah. I was very lucky in this film.
08:37I mean, I shot Rush maybe 15 years ago, Formula One film, where I did a lot of training then.
08:42I grew up in Australia, lived in the outback and farms and a lot of paddock bombs,
08:47sort of rusted old cars that would demolish and derby into each other and, you know,
08:52mostly illegal sort of activity. But you kind of get comfortable behind the wheel.
08:57And in this film, I adjusted like a kid in a candy store. It's like, I'm going to go top speed,
09:02weave in and out of traffic, handbrake, turn, do this, and no one's going to pull me over
09:06and give me a speeding ticket. Wow. But it has a sort of grit and an authenticity to it.
09:10And you can't, you can try and do that on green screen and it doesn't have the same feel, you know?
09:14Because, Hallie, were you jealous? Because... So jealous. I got to do none of that.
09:19I love stunts. I love to get in there. And I got to do none of that.
09:23Did you get to do some insurance research?
09:26High risk, high value insurance research. Right. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. PowerPoint presentations.
09:32But actually, but you do love action and stunts and things. When did you...
09:36Because it's one thing loving... How do you discover you're loving it?
09:39What was the movie where you kind of went, oh, I'm really good at this?
09:41Well, I was a gymnast as a kid, so... And I know you were an ice skater, so it was another thing.
09:45Yes. I had dreams of being, like, those...
09:50Black Nadia Comaneci, you know? Like, that was my dream.
09:54So when I... When I did Catwoman, that was the first time I did all of my own stunts.
10:00And I tried to make my Catwoman really like a... Like a cat.
10:04And so I was into all the... I learned capoeira for that movie.
10:07And I really got into doing all of those stunts myself. And so that's when my love of...
10:11And I realized that, also, when a performer can do all of their own stunts,
10:15that frees up the director to put the camera anywhere and shoot from any angle.
10:19Because you don't have to sort of accommodate a double, you know?
10:23You can sort of give them a lot more to work with.
10:25And that's when I realized I would try to lean into doing all of my own stunts.
10:29But you have to... You have to know what you're doing.
10:32Like, I did... I did Doctor Who, erm, and...
10:35LAUGHTER
10:38I thought I'd bring it back to the UK, you know what I mean?
10:41APPLAUSE
10:44Well, I did Doctor Who, and there was...
10:46So Doctor Who's, like, a scientific series over here,
10:50where there's a time machine that flies through space.
10:53And the first day, they said, your character is going through space,
10:57and it crashes, so you've got to fall on the floor.
11:00They said, do you want a mat? I said, no, don't worry about it.
11:02So I said... And it just said, fall on the floor.
11:05And they said, do you want a stunt double? I said, don't worry about it.
11:08So I literally just threw myself on the floor.
11:10BANG!
11:11And I went, OK, let's do it again. I went, what?
11:13LAUGHTER
11:14He said, you're going to do that about 15 times.
11:17I thought you'd fuck off, get him in.
11:18LAUGHTER
11:23And it's interesting, you mentioned Catwoman there,
11:25and Catwoman's one of those films that, you know,
11:27it's no secret at the time, its reception was a little rocky,
11:31but since then, it's taken on a kind of life of its own, hasn't it?
11:34It really has. It's been amazing to see that the younger genera...
11:37Like, they get the joke.
11:38LAUGHTER
11:39And it does have a life of...
11:40It's the film that, I think, out of all of my movies,
11:43believe it or not, people walk up to me and they're like...
11:46And I'm like, OK, Catwoman?
11:52Or, you know, they say, you're a Catwoman!
11:55So people really, yeah.
11:57Do you purr back?
11:58I do.
11:59And I just...
12:00That'd be awesome.
12:02Hey, that's your experience with Halle Berry.
12:05She purred at me.
12:07LAUGHTER
12:09You've had it now.
12:10LAUGHTER
12:12Rachel, in terms of, like, stunts and things,
12:14you do have an adventurous side,
12:15cos you did cycling in Australia or something, didn't you?
12:18Yeah, I did.
12:19I thought, this sounds like a great idea,
12:21I'll cycle around...
12:22Do you know Magnetic Island?
12:24Yeah.
12:25Oh, yeah, yeah, I know Magnetic Island, yeah.
12:26You do? Yeah, I've been there as well, yeah.
12:28Cos you're a bike guy.
12:29I'm a guy.
12:30LAUGHTER
12:31Um, yeah, I was...
12:33You know, I was travelling, I...
12:35Um, the first time I backpacked by myself,
12:37I wanted to go to Australia.
12:39A little Canadian girl, I thought,
12:40I'll just go as far as I possibly can.
12:42My parents were like, sure, OK.
12:45So I went to Australia and...
12:46How old were you?
12:47I was 19.
12:49Wow.
12:50That's big.
12:51Yeah.
12:52You know what I mean?
12:53No, it is, that's a big thing to go backpacking by yourself to Australia.
12:56Yeah, big, dumb...
12:58LAUGHTER
12:59But, uh, it was great, it was great.
13:01But, yes, I wound up, um, with, you know,
13:04a random guy from London, uh...
13:07Biking. Biking.
13:09LAUGHTER
13:10Yeah, that's what we call it in England.
13:12LAUGHTER
13:15Strictly biking.
13:16Um, he had his bike, I had my bike.
13:19We... Bikes.
13:19..stayed to our bikes.
13:21Yes, um, yes.
13:22And, uh, uh, yeah, and I was dead weight.
13:25He was so fit and, um, and he was trying to be really patient,
13:29but I was hallucinating by the end.
13:32I was praying to God.
13:34There was no civilisation.
13:36There was no people, there were no restaurants.
13:39Chris lives there.
13:40Beaches.
13:41LAUGHTER
13:45There's a couple of people.
13:47LAUGHTER
13:48The Australian Tourism Board are loving this show.
13:50There's nothing, nothing!
13:53LAUGHTER
13:54There's one guy on a bike.
13:56LAUGHTER
13:57Looking for Rachel.
13:58LAUGHTER
13:59LAUGHTER
14:00LAUGHTER
14:01Just talking about, uh, travelling round Australia,
14:03you did this such a lovely film, Chris.
14:05Uh, the film where you're motorcycling round Australia
14:08with your dad.
14:09Yeah.
14:10And tell us about that journey.
14:12Yeah, so, um, this was initially part of the Limitless series,
14:16and then it became its own thing,
14:19and so we separated and it was an individual episode.
14:22But, um, my dad was, uh, diagnosed with, uh, Alzheimer's a few years ago.
14:27And the, just, the director came to me and said,
14:31look, I know it's a very sensitive subject,
14:33and, um, we have this idea where there's this thing called
14:37reminiscence therapy, where we, basically, the hippocampus,
14:41the part of the brain that Alzheimer's dementia is attacking,
14:44you stimulate via old memories and, and, and reignite neural pathways
14:49and so on, potentially, um, and it's somewhat experimental,
14:52but they're getting, you know, there's a lot of positive results.
14:55Yeah. And so we had this idea about going back to the family home
14:59we lived in and doing a road trip up to Northern Territory.
15:02Um, we lived in an Aboriginal community four and a half hours
15:06outside of, uh, Catherine in, in Arnhem Land.
15:09And, um, where he was a bullcatcher.
15:11This is 30-something years ago.
15:13So we're going to do this motorbike road trip.
15:15And, and I was very apprehensive about it.
15:17I didn't want to, sort of, exploit anything he was going through
15:21for the sake of, sort of, drama and entertainment and so on.
15:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:24But he said, man, a deep integrity and, and, and humility.
15:28And, and I said to him, look, do you have any interest?
15:30And he said, oh yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun.
15:33And look, maybe, you know, me sharing my story might help someone else.
15:36And so we, um, embarked on this, this, this road trip.
15:40And we started in, in Melbourne, where we lived.
15:43And a friend of ours bought the house we lived in.
15:47And 30-something, 40, well, 30, we, when I was born in Melbourne, lived in the house when I was probably six till 18.
15:55So 20-something years ago he bought the house.
15:57And he had a series of photographs that he had taken of the house when he bought it.
16:03And so the art department said to him, can we have those photos?
16:07And they redressed the entire house according to those photographs.
16:14And then we went to the house and walked in and it was like stepping back in time.
16:20Oh my God.
16:21I mean, it's just, it gives you chills, doesn't it?
16:24Yeah.
16:25It was remarkable.
16:26And, and I, it was this overwhelming nostalgia, this ginormous reminder of the passage of time.
16:34Emotional because of the memories we had there and now the memories we weren't going to have
16:40or the memories that were potentially disappearing.
16:43And my dad walked in and he's like, I said, you know, I'm trying to, you know,
16:47there's cameras on us and what do you think?
16:48And he goes, oh, it's great, it's great.
16:50And I said, how do you feel?
16:52He goes, I don't know about all the theatrics, mate.
16:54You know?
16:55All the cameras and stuff.
16:57I said, yeah, we're doing a documentary.
16:59Anyway, and he kept saying, where's your mum?
17:01She'd love this.
17:02And I said, well, she's not in the episode.
17:04And she goes, oh, okay.
17:05And then a minute later, he's like, where's your mum?
17:07What's she doing?
17:08And I said, well, dad, she's not, she's, she's here, but she's not, it's just us.
17:11And, and he kept asking and it was so beautiful.
17:15He wanted to share it with her.
17:16And then eventually they were like, just, just bring her up.
17:18And so she came into the house for her really hit home because it was a real reminder of
17:24the sort of memories we'd had and what we're missing.
17:27And then he, you saw him relax, you know, that was his sort of anchor and as things are
17:32sort of being taken away and disappearing.
17:34And it was quite beautiful and, and, and profound and heartbreaking.
17:39And, and I've had people say to me, who've seen the episode, who are suffering with dementia or Alzheimer's,
17:45say, I wish my kids could see this or my family members, because people dance around the issue.
17:50No one comes and says, what are you afraid of?
17:53You know, how are you feeling?
17:54How are you feeling?
17:55Because they, they, it's too hard to confront.
17:57So they suffer in silence.
17:58And so I was asking questions to my father and yes, on camera, but the questions I probably wouldn't have been brave enough to ask.
18:07And those things and how's your feeling.
18:09And it was, I asked him in the doc, I said, you know, what are you afraid of?
18:15And he said, I just don't want to be a burden, you know?
18:18And it said, it said so much to me about him and not that I could have any more respect for my father,
18:23but the fact that his main concern was not being a burden to those around him,
18:28more so than I'm losing my memories and my time is expiring, was, was beautiful.
18:33But the episode became about connection and about love and family and what's important,
18:38which is a shared moment.
18:39And also there's that lovely thing of sharing memories.
18:41Yeah, it's about sharing memories.
18:42And in the midst of all, all of that, there's a, there's a very sweet but funny moment where you and your mum and dad
18:49are in that original house and you are watching, particularly this is the first film you ever made.
18:55Yeah, yeah, it should have been the first and last film I ever made.
18:58We created this ridiculous sort of parody of Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter.
19:05Yeah.
19:06Well, we've got that clip.
19:07I know you.
19:08It's the clip of the family.
19:09So please enjoy Chris Hemsworth's first ever film performance in Crocodile Hunter.
19:14Can we see it?
19:15Yeah, you can pop it on.
19:18The Crocodile Hunter.
19:20You almost spelled Crocodile Crocodile.
19:21How are you going folks?
19:22We've got a real bloody river in store for you today.
19:23Oh this is, this is gold.
19:24We're going to be chasing the Siberian tiger Australian fox.
19:37It's going to be bloody unreal.
19:39Let's go have a look-see.
19:41Now, I've got myself a little son of a horse.
19:45That was my heart.
19:46How are you going?
19:47They're riding her.
19:48Here, come here.
19:49Have a little secret.
19:50That's what I'm talking about.
19:51Deadly as.
19:52He's digging a hole.
19:54Remember, when he's not looking.
19:56Over here, over here, over here.
19:58I've got him.
20:00That guy wasn't hurt in the making of his film.
20:03You get him in the full Nelson, like so.
20:05And you've got to get him just a minute.
20:07Look at the dog.
20:11Next week, we'll be chasing the Australian grasshopper.
20:14Can't wait.
20:15See yous then.
20:25Well, that was your first film.
20:27For sure.
20:28Everyone can enjoy your latest film.
20:30Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry in Crime 101
20:33from the 13th of February.
20:35Very good.
20:38They're shorts.
20:39Tight pair of shorts.
20:41Oh, my God.
20:42Tight pair of shorts.
20:43There's something very Australian about that.
20:44Yeah.
20:45Yeah.
20:46Tight pair of shorts.
20:47That's pretty cool.
20:49Next up, Rachel McAdams brings us a brilliant movie
20:52from Evil Dead director Sam Raimi.
20:54It's called Send Help.
20:56It opens in cinemas on the 5th of February.
20:59So, Rachel, you play Linda Little.
21:01She's fantastic.
21:02Tell us about Linda Little.
21:04Who is she?
21:05What's she up to?
21:06Well, Linda is a real worker bee.
21:09She's been at her company for seven years,
21:11and she can do everybody's job with her eyes closed.
21:14And she's in line for a big promotion.
21:16She's very excited.
21:17She's going to use the money to get a bigger apartment
21:20and go travelling.
21:22And then she gets passed over for the douchebag friend of the boss
21:29who's been there for six months.
21:31Oh.
21:32And it really grinds her gears.
21:34It would.
21:36And she's just about had enough, you know?
21:38Yeah.
21:39Yeah.
21:40Yes.
21:41I'd rather say, eat her asshole.
21:43Yes.
21:44OK.
21:45Grind her gears is...
21:47It's not pissed off, you know?
21:48It's not enough.
21:49No.
21:50Sorry.
21:51Once again, eats her asshole?
21:52Eats her asshole.
21:53OK.
21:54It really eats her asshole.
21:57Like that?
21:58Yes.
21:59Like that.
22:00Good job.
22:02But tell us more, because then a big thing happens.
22:07We're allowed to know the big thing, aren't we?
22:09Oh, the rest?
22:10The rest?
22:11Well, the send help bit.
22:12Right.
22:13Um...
22:14So...
22:15You remember what happens, right?
22:18I don't know how long ago you filmed this, Rachel.
22:20It was like six months ago!
22:22Um...
22:23After you lost your asshole.
22:25Yes.
22:26Uh, yes.
22:27So she gets invited to prove herself once again,
22:31um...
22:32On the company trip to Bangkok,
22:34um...
22:35He...
22:36Her new boss invites her to solve a problem there,
22:38and they get on the plane,
22:39and...
22:40um...
22:41The plane...
22:42goes...
22:43down.
22:44Is that a spoiler, though?
22:46No.
22:47No, it's really not.
22:48It's all over the edge.
22:49It's called send help.
22:50Right.
22:51I think...
22:52I think...
22:53I think you'll...
22:54The audience will be disappointed if they don't know her.
22:57They'll be like...
22:58Why does she need help?
22:59I don't know.
23:00I don't understand.
23:01The plane is growing.
23:02Yes.
23:03Yes.
23:04Yes.
23:05And then she winds up washing up on a Thailand beach,
23:11and, um...
23:12And she thrives.
23:13And she thrives.
23:14Yes, she does very well,
23:15because she's a fan of Survivor.
23:16She's a big fan of Survivor,
23:17and she spends a lot of her time,
23:19her spare time...
23:20She's auditioned for Survivor countless times,
23:22never been chosen.
23:23Wow.
23:24I know.
23:25That's her moment.
23:26It's more asshole eating.
23:27Yes.
23:31I've never heard this expression before.
23:33I've coined...
23:34I've coined...
23:35I've made this up.
23:36Everybody in my life has heard this.
23:38Hayley...
23:39Hayley's...
23:40She's got Scouse DNA.
23:41You know what I mean?
23:42I can find the...
23:44I can find the spare end.
23:45I can get to it.
23:47Eat your asshole.
23:49I can't wait.
23:50There's some people out there going,
23:52yeah, great.
23:54We're going to take off.
23:55Let's do it.
23:56It's going to take off.
23:57And listen, our clip is you and your boss,
23:59played by Dylan O'Brien,
24:01and it's you coming to terms with your new situation on the island.
24:09And, obviously, you weren't stranded on a desert island in real life,
24:12but as Rachel McAdams, you did face a lot of hardship.
24:16I feel there was a lot of fluid in this film for you.
24:19Mm-hm.
24:20Yeah.
24:21I mean, there's obviously water, sea, all of that,
24:23but there's more.
24:24Yes.
24:25Yeah.
24:26A lot of blood.
24:27A lot of blood.
24:28Yeah.
24:29Which I knew.
24:30I knew that when I read it.
24:31I mean, I knew there was some blood.
24:33I didn't know quite how much...
24:35The Sam Raimi level of blood.
24:36There would be.
24:37The Sam Raimi level of blood.
24:38There's really no...
24:39Yep.
24:40There you are.
24:41No!
24:42That is Sam Raimi.
24:43Like, he's very hands-on with the blood.
24:44Oh, he insists.
24:45Oh!
24:46It has to be him.
24:47No one else could do it.
24:49And he'll sit there for, like, an hour before we actually shoot it
24:53and practice.
24:55Not actually throwing blood, but, like, he's getting ready...
24:58Oh, right.
24:59...to do it.
25:00The wrist action.
25:01Yeah, this is a clip.
25:02Just clip that or put it on the internet to everyone
25:06and watch this show.
25:07He's just getting ready.
25:12I'm just walking into all of it tonight.
25:14Oh, my God.
25:16Um, yes.
25:17But he's...
25:18No, he's a real team player.
25:21We all saw it.
25:22We all saw it.
25:23I mean, this is...
25:24Because when you put that picture up, this shows what acting
25:28really is.
25:29Can you see that picture?
25:30And again, look, there's all these people around you.
25:32There's a false head of a boar probably being held by a runner
25:36somewhere.
25:37He's throwing stuff at you.
25:39And, you know, you've trained for this.
25:41LAUGHTER
25:43I did.
25:44I chose this life.
25:47It's not easy.
25:48And here's the thing, Rachel.
25:50You, Jack DeGreer, but as Hallie mentioned earlier,
25:54originally, sports.
25:56That was your thing.
25:57I was sporty spice, yes.
25:58Yeah.
25:59Yeah, I loved sports.
26:00What did you do?
26:01Ice skating you were very good at.
26:03I was OK.
26:04I was OK.
26:05Is this figure skating?
26:06Yes.
26:07Oh, there you are.
26:08There I am.
26:09With my little medal around my neck.
26:11Yeah, see, that's how good you are.
26:12You won a medal.
26:13You won a medal.
26:14I recently threw away all my medals, all my badges.
26:19No.
26:20Literally three days ago, I threw away.
26:22Why?
26:23By mistake?
26:24No.
26:25What?
26:27I'm trying to Marie Kondo my life.
26:29You know, I'm like, my mom was like, well, what if your
26:32children, I was like, what are they going to do with my
26:35skating tests?
26:36You know?
26:37No?
26:38The Rachel McAdams Museum.
26:39What will they put in the Rachel McAdams Museum?
26:42I know.
26:43The exhibits will be empty.
26:46They should have all her skating medals.
26:48No, no, you've got a photograph there from 1954.
26:52You're my new best friends.
26:57And did you just put them in the garbage?
27:02Yes, and it did pain me, but I thanked them and let them go.
27:08OK.
27:09Yeah.
27:10I've been studying Buddhism.
27:11Yeah.
27:12In terms of winning things, Halle Berry, wow.
27:16Oh, no.
27:17This is amazing.
27:18Oh, no.
27:19This is amazing.
27:20So I think I knew that you'd been a teenage pageant kind of beauty queen, but I had no
27:26idea the amount you won.
27:29I mean, there were serious prizes.
27:30It was insane.
27:31I know.
27:32I got good stuff.
27:33No, you really did.
27:34I was in it for the loot.
27:35Yeah.
27:36Because how old were you?
27:37You were 16, 17 when you were dating?
27:38I was 17, yes.
27:39So it was Miss Teenage?
27:40Yeah, it was Miss Teen.
27:42I didn't really aspire to be a beauty pageant queen.
27:45It was my boyfriend at the time who really wanted a girlfriend who was a beauty queen.
27:51So he took my high school picture and entered it into the Miss Teen Ohio competition.
27:58And I remember one day I just got a letter in the mail and says, you are a finalist in the Miss Teen Ohio.
28:03And I was like, what?
28:04And I had no idea how it happened.
28:06And then he told me the story.
28:07So I showed up at that contest.
28:09I put on my prom dress and I showed up.
28:11And I really, literally could care less.
28:14I was just there because he wanted me to do this.
28:17And I ended up winning the damn thing.
28:20And I was like, oh, my God.
28:22But what I didn't know is when you win one, then you have to be, I was now Miss Teen Ohio.
28:26I had to go to Miss Teen America.
28:28Like, I didn't know I had to keep going.
28:30Yeah.
28:31And I went to Miss Teen America and I won there.
28:32Then I had to go to Miss Ohio.
28:33Did you?
28:34Then I won there.
28:35Then I had to go to Miss USA.
28:36Like, it kept going and going and going until I finally lost.
28:39But along the way, tell us some of the stuff you won.
28:42Oh, my God.
28:43I won a car.
28:44Yeah, a Chrysler LeBaron at the time.
28:47Convertible, was it?
28:48Yes, convertible.
28:49White convertible is amazing.
28:50Wow.
28:51A fur coat.
28:52Like, $10,000.
28:53That was, like, $10,000.
28:55I had $10,000, like, tax-free money.
28:57Wow.
28:58Jewelry, diamonds, clothes, wardrobe.
29:01Yeah.
29:02Yeah.
29:03So, what happened to the pimp?
29:04Sorry, the boyfriend, that pimp.
29:05LAUGHTER
29:10You know what?
29:11He went to jail three times.
29:12LAUGHTER
29:15The third one, that was a breaker.
29:17I can't now.
29:18He went to jail.
29:19Yeah, three times.
29:20Broke up when he ended up in prison three times.
29:22Rachel, just getting back to send help, you have form playing the anti-hero,
29:27because Regina George in John's favourite film, Mean Girls, I mean...
29:32Yes.
29:33LAUGHTER
29:34Is it true that you didn't understand how much people would hate Regina George?
29:39Yeah.
29:40Yes.
29:41I did...
29:42Well, yes.
29:43LAUGHTER
29:44I didn't...
29:45I didn't know...
29:46I didn't know how it would hit.
29:47I didn't know, like, you know...
29:49Yes, how hated she would be for how long.
29:52LAUGHTER
29:53What was that?
29:54So, the first time you saw a screening with an audience,
29:56was that when it dawned on you?
29:58Yes, yes.
29:59Everyone except for my best friend, who was beside me.
30:01So, when I got hit by the bus, everyone cheered, and she went,
30:06I was like, no!
30:09LAUGHTER
30:10And I was, like, yanking her down.
30:12I was like, right here.
30:13I'm alive.
30:14We're good.
30:15And she was crying.
30:17But she was the only one who was upset about me getting...
30:21She saw a very different film.
30:23LAUGHTER
30:24Yes.
30:25Well, everyone's going to love Rachel McAdams in Send Help.
30:27You can see it in cinemas from next Thursday.
30:30That's where that's at.
30:31Yeah.
30:32APPLAUSE
30:34Now, John Bishop, I love this.
30:39John Bishop is in a Hollywood movie.
30:41Well, his story is, is this thing on?
30:44It's out today.
30:45It's directed by Bradley Cooper, stars Will Arnett and Laura Dern,
30:48and they've been on the show talking about it.
30:51So, I suppose the main thing is, how the hell did this happen, John?
30:55And what does it feel like?
30:57I'm massive in Hollywood.
30:59LAUGHTER
31:00No, it's really, really weird, really strange,
31:03because I met Will Arnett eight years ago on a barge in Amsterdam,
31:10which is the start of all good stories.
31:12LAUGHTER
31:13But I met him through a mutual friend, Chris Trichier,
31:15who's a, you know, you know, who's a film producer,
31:19and he said, tell Will your story of how you got into comedy.
31:22So I told him, Will went, that's a great story,
31:24I'd love to try and write it as a script with my writing partner,
31:27Mark Shappell.
31:28So I said, great, you start writing it, but I, you know,
31:32I want to chip in, I want to be part of the writing process.
31:35So they would write a script and send it to me,
31:37and then I'd send some notes and I'd write some bits and send it back,
31:41and then they'd send me the new version with none of my bits in.
31:44LAUGHTER
31:46I thought, they haven't got the email, I'd send it back,
31:48and then they'd still come back without my bits,
31:50and I went, my bit's shit, boys.
31:52And the truth was, it was too close to me.
31:56You know, the story of how we got into comedy,
31:59the reality of it was too close,
32:02so I had to step away and allow them to write it.
32:05I'm so glad I did.
32:07There was a big portion of trust involved in that,
32:09but the end result is brilliant.
32:12And obviously you spoke to, you know, the writers and everything,
32:15and told them the story, but Melanie, she spoke to...
32:20Laura. Laura Dern, who plays her in the movie.
32:22Yes, so Laura Dern got cast,
32:24and then through mutual friend, Laura reached out
32:27and said to Melanie, can I meet you?
32:29So Melanie went and sat with Laura
32:32and just downloaded her side of the story and what went on.
32:35So Laura's character, honestly, God reflects Melanie so, so much,
32:39and there's one particular scene, which is true.
32:44We got a note, you know, you sometimes get from kids,
32:47where they go, there's head lice in the school,
32:49can you check each other?
32:51And we weren't living together, so she had to come to my house,
32:54and we had to check each other for head lice,
32:56which is such an... So romantic.
32:58It's such an intimate thing, I know, yeah.
33:00And it's such an intimate thing to do, though,
33:02when you're not living together, you know what I mean?
33:04And so, and so she told Laura that,
33:07and then Bradley put it straight into the film.
33:09And that's the clip, that's the clip we've got.
33:11This is, this is Laura and Will with Knits.
33:16And it is, I think, for a British audience watching this,
33:25it'll seem quite far away from your life, because it's set in America now,
33:28Will Arnett is playing you, but those big scenes in it are real.
33:34Like, Melanie, she did accidentally see you doing stand-up.
33:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the big...
33:40So for people who don't know, I fell into stand-up,
33:43because we split up, me and my wife, and I was a month away from being 34,
33:49and the only reason I went into stand-up is I was...
33:53One Monday night, I used to have the kids every weekend,
33:56so Monday I used to be on a downer.
33:59And I was walking past a comedy club in Manchester
34:02called The Frog and Bucket, which I'm sure you're very familiar with.
34:05Oh, I know.
34:06You've been there many times.
34:08And I was...
34:10I'd been to two comedy clubs in my whole life,
34:12I had no interest in stand-up comedy at all.
34:15And anyway, I thought I'd go in, because comedy's great,
34:19and anyone who's ever on their own, just go to a comedy club,
34:22you sit in a room full of strangers,
34:24but everyone laughs at the same time.
34:26So I thought I'd go in there and it'll cheer me up.
34:28And I used to do this joke, which is not the best joke in the world,
34:33and I've said this story before, but it's the only story that's the truth,
34:36is I used to do this joke to let all the ladies in the room
34:41know I was a single man.
34:43I used to say I'm really sad at the moment, ladies and gentlemen,
34:46because me and my wife are not together.
34:49Oh!
34:50It's not that sad, honestly.
34:51We're not divorced or anything.
34:53I've just killed her.
34:54LAUGHTER
34:55But I knew I was going to miss her, so I've kept her head in the fridge.
34:58LAUGHTER
35:00Terrible joke, terrible!
35:02And I got announced on stage this Thursday,
35:05and I said this joke on stage, and as I said it, I looked to the left,
35:09and the head that was meant to be in the fridge was in the audience.
35:13LAUGHTER
35:14Oh, no!
35:15This is a true story.
35:16So she was in the audience, and what had happened,
35:18we'd been apart for almost two years at this point,
35:21and when you're apart, you live parallel lives,
35:24so you don't really know what's going on in each other's life,
35:26you deal with the logistics of children.
35:28She had a new job.
35:29The people she was working with were going out for a birthday do.
35:32Someone said, let's go to a comedy club.
35:34She didn't know I did stand-up comedy.
35:36The people she was with didn't even know my name.
35:39So when I get announced on, they don't understand why she goes,
35:42What the?!
35:43And then I go on stage in front of a room full of strangers
35:47and tell them I've killed her and kept her head in the fridge.
35:50LAUGHTER
35:52Oh, no!
35:53So that twist is in the film where they get back together,
35:56and what happened with us is that...
35:59I remember we were literally going through the final stages
36:03of the divorce, I remember seeing her and thinking,
36:05God, that's going to cost me another ten grand.
36:08LAUGHTER
36:09And then she came over, and we started talking,
36:12and it was lovely, we'd discovered each other again.
36:15She said, she said, that was a surprise.
36:17I said, look, I'm really sorry about the whole head thing.
36:20She said, no.
36:21She said, the surprise was, you were funny.
36:23You made me laugh.
36:25LAUGHTER
36:26Why weren't you doing that earlier?
36:28I know, she said, you made me laugh.
36:30She said, you reminded me of the man that I first met.
36:33Oh.
36:34She said, whatever happened to you?
36:36I said, I married you.
36:37LAUGHTER
36:39So she said, well, do you think we can do something?

40:33Yeah, yeah.
40:34No, you got more than that.
40:35No, we cater for everyone, and Coleman was on it, and he was amazing,
40:38and we became friends, and he's just a gorgeous human being.
40:40I love your mom on it because she's so unimpressed by the celebrities you have on.
40:44She says, like, she goes, not another actor, darling.
