00:00Plot twists are of course commonplace in all storytelling mediums, but they can hit way harder in ga-
00:05when you spend potentially dozens, even hundreds of hours getting to the end of a story, only to be hit way harder.
00:10Not all plot twists are created equal though, and it g-
00:15It goes without saying that some either don't work, or just too damn predictable, and everyone sees them coming-
00:20a mile off.
00:21I'm Scott from Oculture.com, and these are 10 Video Game Plot Twists Everyone So-
00:2510.
00:26Jason Todd is the Arkham Knight Batman Arkham Knight
00:30The moment that the first trailer dropped for Batman Arkham Knight and revealed the antagonist known as the Arkham Knight-
00:35many Bat fans predicted that they would turn out to be none other than Jason Todd.
00:39For one, the Arkham Knight-
00:40appeared to have many parallels with Todd's own story in the classic Under the Red Hood comic arc, and honestly-
00:45it was just tough to picture any other notable Batman character actually making sense. Rocksteady-
00:50tried to throw fans off the scent by promising that the Arkham Knight was an entirely new character, but most of us-
00:55just weren't having it, instead remaining firm in their conviction that we knew what was up.
00:59Indeed, the Arkham Knight-
01:00Arkham Knight was ultimately revealed to be Jason Todd, with such a smacky over the head-
01:04yep, do-
01:05obviousness that most fans seem to just wonder why Rocksteady bothered making it a surprise at all.
01:10Number 9-
01:11It's all in the bus driver's head-
01:13The Dark Pictures anthology, Little Hope-
01:15Little Hope was a massive letdown, primarily because its big reveal was such a dull rehash of the scene
01:20and the same tired plot twist horror movies have been dining on for decades at this point. Players take control of-
01:25four college students and their professor after their bus crashes in the ghost town of Little Hope, but-
01:30eventually revealed that one of the four students, Andrew, is actually Anthony, the bus driver and the rest-
01:35are figments of his imagination. Basically, Anthony hallucinated the whole story after accidentally-
01:40detouring into Little Hope, the same town where, in his childhood, he survived a house fire which killed his-
01:45family. This was ludicrously easy to peg from the very start of the game though if you were paying attention.
01:50For starters, when Anthony drives into Little Hope, we never actually see the vehicle's passengers, and-
01:55and then once the passengers wake up from the crash, he's mysteriously vanished. If you've seen the movie Ident-
02:00for one, there's a good chance you'll see precisely where this is going in the first 20 minutes.
02:05Number 8. Ichiban is Arakawa's son. Yakuza like a dragon. Late on in Yakuza-
02:10like a dragon, we learn that new protagonist Ichiban Kazuga is actually the son of crime boss Masumi Arakawa.
02:15And Arakawa's son, Masato, is actually the biological son of Yakuza Captain, Joe Sonata.
02:20As babies Ichiban and Masato were abandoned in coin lockers on the same day-
02:25and when Arakawa went back to retrieve his son from the locker, he picked up Masato by mistake.
02:30Leaving Ichiban to be adopted by Jiro Kazuga. And while you might not fully predict the wild coin lockers
02:35switcheroo, it isn't hard to suspect something fishy about the relationship between Ichiban and Arakawa.
02:40Arakawa leaves Ichiban for dead after shooting him but doesn't confirm
02:45the kill which is either insanely sloppy or absolutely intentional as it turns out to be.
02:50Then there's the fact Arakawa is almost weirdly warm towards Ichiban at certain times, as though the game is
02:55tipping its hand to players, giving you a further heads up of what's coming.
02:587. Nicole was dead
03:00Dead Space
03:01Dead Space
03:02Dead Space's big twist is that protagonist Isaac Clarke's girlfriend
03:05Nicole is dead for the entirety of the game, having previously killed herself to avoid becoming a Necro.
03:10Every apparent in-person interaction Isaac has with Nicole is a hallucination.
03:15It's also been introduced by the extraterrestrial monolith known as the Marker.
03:18Now, one easy way you can figure this out before
03:20is by reading a list of the game's chapters and seeing that the first letter of each spells out the phrase Necro.
03:25Nicole is dead
03:26Beyond this, the game hammers home the idea of hallucinations enough that when we see
03:30Nicole looking strangely pristine considering all the death around her, it immediately gives an off vibe.
03:35Then there's the fact she repeatedly says the very odd phrase make us whole again, which doesn't exactly
03:40suggest a person who is their best self physically or mentally.
03:432023's Dead Space remains
03:45The fact that this remake made Nicole's true nature even more obvious through Isaac's now-voiced interactions with her.
03:50The fact that it can't be that much of a surprise playing now.
03:526.
03:53Your son is father
03:55Fallout 4
03:56When players come face to face with father aka the leader of the institute near the end of Fallout 4
04:00Fallout 4, it's revealed that he is in fact your son Sean who was kidnapped from cryostasis sick-
04:0560 years earlier.
04:06Because video games.
04:07But this one spelt out pretty blatantly for players if you're
04:10paying just a little bit of attention.
04:11Above all else, we know that the player is put back into stasis following Sean
04:15abduction for an indeterminate period, making it clear that Sean will likely be considerably older
04:20when we next meet him.
04:21Given that Sean's whereabouts is the central mystery of the game, it simply makes sense that
04:25instead of a soppy reunion between father and son, he'd be the bait and switch antagonist instead.
04:30Still, it's fun to see the twist play out, and Bethesda have never really been one for watertight,
04:34unguessable plot-
04:35But where large, unaccounted for passages of time are concerned, always assume you're being
04:40played.
04:41Number 5.
04:42Venom Snake isn't Big Boss.
04:44Metal Gear Solid 5, the final-
04:45Phantom Pain.
04:46The first of two Hideo Kojima games on this list, with the mind-melting plot-
04:50twist in Metal Gear Solid 5 that the player character Venom Snake wasn't actually Big Boss
04:54at all.
04:55Instead, Venom Snake-
04:55Venom Snake is the combat medic who was on board the chopper with Big Boss, which crashed
04:59at the end-
05:00of the Ground Zero's prologue release.
05:02Through plastic surgery and hypnotherapy, the medic was turned-
05:05into a Big Boss decoy who we unknowingly play as for the entire game.
05:10An impressive amount of fans actually guessed this, pointing to the fact that the game lets
05:14you customize Snake's face-
05:15release at the very beginning for use in Metal Gear Online, only to of course revert to Big
05:19Boss' likeness for the-
05:20the main story.
05:21Then there's the fact that in Ground Zero's, the combat medic sounds like Kiefer Sutherland,
05:24with a slight-
05:25pitched down voice, because it is Sutherland who voices both the medic and Big Boss.
05:30Lastly-
05:30on the chopper, you'll faintly see the reflection of your own custom character's face whenever
05:34Venom Snake is-
05:35peering out the window.
05:36Even though this twist was shockingly ridiculous, even for Kojima, he left enough-
05:40of a breadcrumb trail in the early going that many figured it out dozens of hours before
05:43the shoe dropped for real.
05:454.
05:46Yosef is the Big Bad-
05:48Astral Chain-
05:49First up, Astral Chain-
05:50absolutely slaps and you should go play it.
05:52Nowhere near enough people have played this game.
05:54It's a-
05:55eventually revealed that support character Yosef Calvert is actually the Big Bad of 2019's
05:59cult classic-
06:00action-adventure, Astral Chain.
06:01Yosef's ultimate goal is to absorb all remaining life on Earth, and-
06:05duly become a god.
06:06But it seems just about everyone saw Yosef's heel turn coming a mile away.
06:10Even in the earlier chapters, Yosef carries himself in an ominous enough way where it feels
06:14like his villainy-
06:15is only scarcely contained, aided by cutscene direction that tends to frame him from a pretty
06:19sinister perspective.
06:20On top of this, Jenner even straight up warns you that he's a liar who will do anything
06:24in the pursuit of-
06:25his sick ambition.
06:26It's so obvious that you couldn't really be blamed for expecting a third-act rug pull
06:30to-
06:30where Yosef isn't the ultimate antagonist.
06:32Regardless, it's played totally straight, and Platinum points-
06:35pointed it out with a neon signpost from the jump.
06:383.
06:39Jill is the Bird Lady-
06:40Resident Evil 5.
06:41The Resident Evil franchise really doesn't like killing off characters for good, and
06:45so-
06:45though few fans bought into Capcom's claim that the legendary Jill Valentine had been
06:48killed off-screen before-
06:50RE5.
06:51Even though the marketing focused on Jill's grave, and Capcom even took out a glossy-
06:55magazine ad showing Chris kneeling, it was howlingly obvious that Capcom was giving fans the workaround.
07:00It didn't help that one trailer showed a woman waking up out of stasis, and while some fans
07:05thought she might be Sherry Birkin, the stone-cold consensus was that we were looking at an alive and well-
07:10still.
07:11Capcom couldn't let what remained of the mystery lie, because in the game's final trailer, they
07:15show-
07:15showcased a sequence where Wesker started to unmask the mysterious Bird Lady character while
07:19telling Chris-
07:20he thought he'd be happy to see it.
07:21I mean, really, who the hell else could it really be at that-
07:252.
07:26Tomorrow is Lou, Death Stranding 2 on the beach.
07:30The moment Elle Fanning's Tomorrow showed up in the marketing for Death Stranding 2 on
07:33the beach, many fans-
07:35predicted that she would in fact turn out to be the adult version of Sam's adopted daughter
07:38Lou, somehow.
07:40And while playing the game, it seems so hilariously obvious that Tomorrow is an older Lou that
07:44you might suspect-
07:45it's a troll from Hideo Kojima, who's gonna reveal all over time.
07:49Instead, what you see-
07:50is what you get.
07:51And in the last few hours of the game, Higgs finally confirms what we all largely already
07:55knew-
07:55that Tomorrow is indeed a grown-up Lou, and that's that.
07:58Lou is actually Sam's bi-
08:00the biological daughter through a time-bending process involving the Deus Ex Machina plot
08:04device that is the be-
08:05in this series. But at least we got some awesome action cutscenes with Tomorrow Cleaning House to make up
08:10for it.
08:11Number 1 Mythos is Yggdrasil, Tales of Symphonia. Early on in
08:15Tales of Symphonia, players cross paths with a half-elven youth who shares the same name
08:19as the mythologised
08:20legendary hero Mythos. Later, it's revealed that Mythos went on to become the villainous
08:24Krux's leader
08:25Yggdrasil. And you can probably guess where this one's going. Indeed, it turns out that the Mythos we've
08:30been dealing with is Yggdrasil. And if you followed the most obvious logical path of least resistance,
08:35there's a good chance you arrived at that conclusion before the game did. After all,
08:38despite many reminders that Mythos
08:40is a common boy's name, the only one we meet in the game bears a possible resemblance to Yggdrasil.
08:45And so by invoking Occam's razor, it isn't hard to reason what might be coming. Beyond this,
08:50Mythos tends to show up just when something pivotal happens. And let's be honest, the mysterious young
08:55stir is actually the secret big bad JRPG trope is as old as time itself.
