00:00Creating a video game is no easy feat and usually changes big and small
00:05need to be made for understandable purposes.
00:08But not all fixes are as normal.
00:10Because sometimes the motive behind a patch can be absolutely-
00:15I'm Josh from Walk Culture Gaming and today we're covering ridiculous-
00:20reasons games had to be changed.
00:23First up, the devs didn't want to upset-
00:25a new employee, Phantasy Star 2.
00:28Have you ever had that feeling of start-
00:30having a new job and trying so hard to impress the brass that you over-
00:35do it a little bit?
00:36Well, in any case, it's hard to imagine the higher-ups being unhappy-
00:40with your work and not telling you that you're doing something wrong.
00:45Unless, of course, you're SEGA.
00:46In which case, some devs are more than happy to keep your work in the-
00:50final product, even if they aren't too keen on it.
00:54In 1993-
00:55a new developer interview with staff who worked on the seminal sci-fi RPG Phantasy Star team-
01:00tells such a story.
01:02According to game designer Kotaro Hayashida-
01:05the design of the game's dungeons was passed over to a new employee.
01:09This employee-
01:10Quart kind of overdid it, leading to a slew of over-designed dungeons that made-
01:15the game, quote, more about complex dungeons than anything else, which wasn't-
01:20the original plat.
01:21However, rather than scrapping the work of this new employee, the game-
01:25film's writer-director Chieko Aoki decided that she didn't want to hurt their feelings-
01:30and waste all their effort.
01:32Therefore, their work was kept and used even-
01:35even if it was, quote, with some mixed feelings-
01:38as per Hayashida.
01:39So the-
01:40The original plan of the game was altered because the bosses just didn't want to discourage
01:44their new employee-
01:45Now, that's a wholesome work environment if I ever heard of one.
01:49Next up-
01:50The banter was too much.
01:52Forspoken.
01:532023's Forspoken-
01:55is an absurd game that is, in a way, kind of brilliant as it exemplifies-
02:00all the bad tropes of modern AAA gaming.
02:03It's got a bland open world, repetitive-
02:05gameplay- convoluted combat, and of course, writing that's so quippy-
02:10sardonic and try-hard that it makes you cringe.
02:13And that last point is exactly-
02:15where this entry comes into play.
02:17One of the biggest complaints people had about this action RPG-
02:20was the Marvel-esque dialogue, especially the conversations between Protagonist Frey-
02:25and her talking bracelet cough.
02:27Listening to these two banter back and forth-
02:30with lackluster one-liners and uninspired quips left many players feeling frustrated-
02:35and wishing they could just mute them.
02:37The game even came with an option to adjust the frequency-
02:40of their dialogue.
02:42However, Forspoken had to change itself even-
02:45even further, as the cringeworthy banter caught plenty of flack even with this slider.
02:50So, a patch was released four months after the game came out as covered via-
02:55Eurogamer that further reduced the frequency and content of their banter during-
03:00open-world activities.
03:01Now imagine your writing being so bad that people just want-
03:05to mute you.
03:06Can't relate!
03:07Next up, unfo-
03:10the unfortunate graffiti placement Stellablade.
03:12Set dressing is the kind of thing most gamers-
03:15won't notice.
03:16Small in-world details are intended to make the environment feel-
03:20alive, usually without distracting the player too much.
03:23So imagine how embarrassed the-
03:25many devs for Stellablade must have felt when they realised the massive blunder that they'd-
03:30made due to some awkward graffiti placement.
03:33Because yeah, nobody could ignore-
03:35all this.
03:36One piece of Stellablade's elaborate visual design is the use of graffiti-
03:40designs appearing throughout the game.
03:42It also has a selection of vendors, one of which is-
03:45called Roxanne.
03:46This is all pretty innocent, but it was less so when some-
03:50accidental graffiti placement, which spelled out the word hard, was placed right-
03:55next to a sign, for Roxanne's shop, that was simply the words, our shop.
04:00Yeah, the devs accidentally alluded to a racial slur by placing the words-
04:05awkward, hard, right next door to the letter R.
04:08Sony themselves had a comment on-
04:10on this mistake, as per Forbes, calling it an, quote, unintentional, objection-
04:15phrase, and then patched it out.
04:17Next up, Puckman, Pacman.
04:19If you're a-
04:20fan of the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, then you probably already know this one.
04:25Well, therefore, anyone who isn't aware, the moral of this story is that gamers-
04:30cannot be trusted.
04:31Pacman, of course, is a gaming icon that the whole world-
04:35knows.
04:36You could find someone living inside a cave in a distant, far-off land-
04:40probably not even on this planet, and they'd probably still say, oh yeah, that's the whack-a-
04:45guy.
04:46And if you're wondering, the whack-a-whack-a-woman, of course, is not mi-
04:50pacman, but rather, Shakira.
04:53I was proud of that joke.
04:55The point is, his name has undergone a slight transformation, as his original Japanese-
05:00iteration was known as Puckman.
05:02The original name came from the Japanese phrase-
05:05Pacu-Paku-Taburu, which is used to describe the sounds and action of gobble-
05:10things up.
05:11However, this moniker was abandoned when the game was released in North America.
05:15As there was concern, naturally, that his name would be vandalized, with the P-
05:20being replaced with an F.
05:21And yeah, it wouldn't look great on Namco to see the words-
05:25Well, you can imagine them on their machines, so you can see the concern.
05:29It is fa-
05:30fascinating to know that a fear of arcade hooliganism, though, led to such an iconic name-
05:35being born.
05:36Next up, the studio was afraid of Sean Connery, dold an-
05:40Gaming myths were rampant in the pre-internet era, with a particularly pos-
05:45popular one being the all-bonds cheat.
05:48This urban legend claimed that the-
05:50N64 classic shooter, GoldenEye, featured a cheat that would unlock models for nearly-
05:55every iteration of Bond, letting you and your friends duke it out to see which-
06:00one was the best.
06:01This was, naturally, false, however, while the-
06:05humor itself was a hoax, it's surprising to know how close to reality it actually was.
06:10That's because there were plans to include a full Bond mode, including Sean-
06:15Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Piers Brosnan, and tough look-
06:20for George Lazenby.
06:21However, this concept was scrapped, and during an interview with the-
06:25the game's director, Martin Hollis, revealed that the reason the mode was removed-
06:30was because the company was afraid of what cinema's first Bond would do to them.
06:35I think they were worried about him getting litigious, Hollis claimed.
06:39While the idea-
06:40it would have been amazing, it seems, incurring the wrath of the original 007-
06:45wasn't a risk worth taking.
06:46Next up, many unexpected results dwarf-
06:50Dwarf Fortress.
06:51For those unfamiliar with Dwarf Fortress, this is a bonkers mani-
06:55management and construction simulator game with uncompromising levels of complexity.
07:00As such, it has some of the funniest patch notes, as collected by PC Gamer, that you'll-
07:05find in any game ever.
07:06Some of the things the devs had to fix due to-
07:10unexpected outcomes, I swear down, we'll leave you in stitches.
07:13I mean, just look at some of these highlights.
07:15There's-
07:15There's one that says fix the bugs where animals could rent rooms, fix the bugs with-
07:20mule shitting luggage, stopped children from buying shops, weasels-
07:25probably shouldn't be found on glaciers, rodent man has no teeth-
07:30and the iconic added cat butchery.
07:32I don't even know what that last one means, I mean-
07:35I kinda get it, but I kinda don't wanna get it, you know what I mean?
07:39Another particularly-
07:40the amusing alteration the game needed to make was for the sake of saving the dwarf kits.
07:45It turns out that forgetting to dress them once they turned two years old was leading to-
07:50the dying of embarrassment.
07:52Literally.
07:53Unlike other entries on this list, the thrill-
07:55the thrill of this game is in its unpredictability and weirdness though.
07:59As such, these goofy-
08:00changes are part of the broader appeal of this absolutely absurd title.
08:05Next up, the drunken princess, Super Mario Kart.
08:08The bright, fun, inviting-
08:10world of Mario Kart is about as controversial as a butterfly resting on a flower.
08:15This series is renowned worldwide for its family-friendly content and wholesome-
08:20overall vibe.
08:21That's what makes it so funny then to learn that the first game in the season-
08:25series had to make a controversial change when bringing the game to America.
08:29And it was all-
08:30down to the villainous Bowser and the charming Princess Peach.
08:34After achieving victory-
08:35in Super Mario Kart, each character performs a unique animation while holding a bot-
08:40bottle of champagne.
08:41While most characters just toy about with it, the original Japanese release-
08:45saw two characters crack it open and neck it to their heart's content.
08:50Those figures, as you might have guessed, were Bowser and Peach.
08:53Now, Bowser's messy-
08:55chugging does feel pretty fitting, but seeing the affable Princess Peach get all-
09:00flushed upon drowning champagne was a little less familiar.
09:05As such-
09:05Which Nintendo America saw it fit to change these animations when localizing to the West-
09:10Switch-
09:10Switching to Bowser cheering and Peach throwing the bottle up and down like it was a football.
09:15Bring it back, I say, though.
09:16Though, knowing Nintendo, they'll probably charge extra for it, wouldn't-
09:20they?
09:21The original name was less than PG.
09:25Dark Souls.
09:26It's hard to think of a franchise that has had a bigger impact on modern gaming-
09:30than Dark Souls.
09:31Damn near every gamer has an opinion on it, one way-
09:35or another, whether it be decrying it as a masterpiece or lamenting it's punishing.
09:40Difficulty.
09:41But, and that is a choice word as you'll soon see, the iconic-
09:45name of Dark Souls came very close to being something else with a last-minute alteration.
09:50Saving FromSoft some major embarrassment.
09:53That's because the game went through-
09:55a few names as per the gamer, with one of the original ideas being Dark-
10:00players, a name that obviously was better left by the wayside.
10:04It's Firmus Monica-
10:05there, however, was Dark Ring.
10:08Now that seems innocent enough-
10:10but a decision was made at the last minute to change the name as the British devs step-
10:15in to inform FromSoft that this title might be interpreted as something else.
10:20in the UK.
10:21And if you don't know, that's because the term is often used as a-
10:25slang term in the UK for, you know, the bum, the bot.
10:30the arse, the backside, the rear, the cheeks.
10:35But more specifically, the butthole, referred to in the UK by wrong-uns everywhere as-
10:40the rear.
10:41As such, something about the name Dark Ring just felt a little off-
10:45and rings lights, rings born, rings lights, yeah, I don't think any-
10:50of these quite have the same ring to them either.
10:53Even though if Elden Ring came-
10:55out first, they probably would.
10:57Elden Ring was good, wasn't it?
10:58It was a good title that, yeah.
11:00Definitely.
11:01Imagine if that was called Dark Ring as well.
11:03Doesn't bear thinking about.
11:04Next up.
11:05The fans demanded cake, dead by daylight.
11:08When thinking about the monstrous sa-
11:10Alan Hill villain pyramid head, a lot of things probably come to mind.
11:14There's his oversized head-
11:15piece, the tendency to chase you, the Berserk style sword and-
11:20more.
11:21However, if you're a Dead by Daylight fan, you might instead think of cake.
11:25But not the bakery kind, the one I was just all about.
11:28You know, the bum, the bo-
11:30the ass, the-
11:32Yeah, you get the joke.
11:34When pyramid head-
11:35known in the game as the Executioner, was announced for DBD.
11:38His early promotional work showed that he-
11:40he'd been given a damn rotund backside.
11:43Fans, naturally-
11:45were overjoyed to see their monstrous villains so well caked up.
11:49Sadly, this-
11:50excitement was marred by controversy when the character finally appeared in game with a noticeable-
11:55nerve to his posterior.
11:57Posterior.
11:58Posterior.
11:59Posterior.
12:00I don't know how to pronounce it.
12:02You know what I mean.
12:03The bum.
12:04The ass.
12:05Posterior.
12:06Posterior.
12:07This is gonna be loopy.
12:09The backlash to the-
12:10This was, while mostly ironic, pretty notable, as covered here by The Gamer, which drew-
12:15the attention of the devs.
12:16Thankfully, the 5.1.1 update brought the bakery-
12:20back with a patch note reading, quote, fixed an issue that caused the Executioner's rear-
12:25to be too flat.
12:26So yeah, what a victory for gaming.
12:29While the development-
12:30developers have claimed the butt reduction was due to a technical issue, it's notable
12:34that his-
12:35flatness was listed under known issues in the patch notes.
12:39So it seems that behavior-
12:40interactive is more than aware of what the fans are worried about.
12:44Up next, it-
12:45needed to be hornier.
12:46Baldur's Gate 3.
12:47If you played Baldur's Gate 3, which-
12:50everyone in the world should do, by the way, then you'll know the game is hornier than-
12:55Tiefling.
12:56There's barely any companions who aren't looking to pounce on the player, with-
13:00performances being a massive part of the game.
13:02Hell, at times it even feels like a stray-
13:05updating sim.
13:06However, while you might assume this was a path the devs always planned to walk-
13:10it was actually a deliberate change in the direction that was prompted by player fee-
13:15because, in the words of one of the developers, when discussing the BG3 player-
13:20base, quote,
13:21they're all horny, end quote.
13:23Baldur's Gate 3 went through-
13:25an extensive early access period, refining the game's themes, story, and more.
13:30With player opinions always in mind.
13:32Well, this feedback, as per IGN, led-
13:35the team to realise they needed to up the amount of romance in the game.
13:39According to the same dev-
13:40developer, only about 1% of players were uninterested in having a romance-
13:45and as such, BG3 became what it is.
13:48So that's right, the players brought this-
13:50themselves.
13:51Now, this is the end of the list.
13:52Go on and chat up those frogs-
13:55people, go and talk to the hot vampires, and get ravaged by the guy who-
14:00turns into a bear.
14:05Go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
14:06Glenn, go, go!
14:07terrible
14:10macle
14:12moving
14:14"...
14:15liber кого
14:18embarrassed
14:21!!!
14:21Anyway,
14:23let's go.
14:24I think it's the end of the recording.
14:27It is朝,
14:32I think it's sometimes
