00:00First, after a weekend of turmoil in the US state of Minnesota, today a judge
00:05is considering whether to pause the deployment of thousands of ICE agents in the state.
00:10The sweeping and aggressive immigration crackdown since the beginning of December last year.
00:15has now led to the fatal killing of two people, most recently Alex Prett.
00:20on Saturday, who was shot several times after being forced to the ground.
00:25The shooting now only adding to those tensions in the city of Minneapolis with local residents
00:30taking to the streets to protest the presence of ICE officers.
00:35Well, let's start by taking a listen to the governor of Minnesota, the Democrat, Tim.
00:40So my question is, what's the plan, Donald Trump?
00:45What is the plan?
00:48What do we need to do to get these
00:50federal agents out of our state?
00:52You thought fear, violence and chaos is what you wanted from us?
00:55And you clearly underestimated the people of this state and nation.
01:00We are tired, but we're resolved.
01:04We're peaceful.
01:05We're angry, but we'll never forget.
01:06We're angry, but we'll never forget.
01:07We're angry, but we're angry, but we're angry.
01:10We won't give up hope.
01:11And above all else, we are clearly unified.
01:15Well, let's cross live to Washington and bring in Fraser Jackson, our chorus.
01:20The correspondent on the program, Fraser, you heard Tim Walls there saying what?
01:25What is the plan, Donald Trump?
01:26So let me put that to you then.
01:28And what do you think the white...
01:30House intends to do today and in the days ahead in the wake of these...
01:35Soaring tensions that we've seen in Minnesota.
01:40Well, there's been an interesting development this morning.
01:43We got a tweet from Donald Trump just...
01:45A short while ago saying that he's sending Tom Homan, who was the head of ICE...
01:50...over to Minnesota to basically run things on the ground there.
01:54He says that...
01:55Tom Homan knows the people and likes the people on the ground, but hasn't been involved thus far.
01:59I think that...
02:00It's an interesting choice because normally the kind of person that he would send there would be Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security...
02:05...secretary, so that has sparked...
02:08...sparked thoughts here that may...
02:10Maybe Kristi Noem is on the outs here and that maybe she has kind of...
02:15...fallen out of favour with the administration.
02:17So something to watch there and we'll hear from Caroline Levitt.
02:20Later on, later on in the day as she does her press conference, her press briefing...
02:25...later on.
02:26But there has been that development within the local area.
02:30That's state and local officials trying to stop the US administration.
02:35In the way that it's implementing this immigration crackdown by having...
02:40...around 3,000 agents on the streets there.
02:42They are trying, these local officials, to get...
02:45...that blocked in court.
02:46Arguments are due to be heard in the very, very near future.
02:50Whether that goes the same way as Chicago and puts some kind of reins...
02:55...on Donald Trump's power here remains to be seen.
02:58But this is going to be an emergency state.
03:00But of course, there has been rising tensions over the course of the last few days...
03:04...since that shooting about...
03:05...Alex Petty on Saturday and protests there continuing, albeit most...
03:10...the peaceful protests, despite the fact that the temperature there in Minneapolis...
03:14...is hovering around...
03:15...minus 20 degrees Celsius.
03:17Yeah, Fraser, just tell us a bit more about that then.
03:20I imagine then we are expecting, as we start a new day on the US East Coast...
03:25...more protests in Minnesota.
03:30Yeah, it's going to be...
03:32...there's basically two flashpoints now for these...
03:35...and protests.
03:36One, which is by the site of where Alex Petty was shot...
03:39...and then the other...
03:40...is by the whipping building, which is effectively the staging post that the...
03:44...immigration...
03:45...customs enforcement agents have been using to stage themselves from.
03:48There's been significant demand...
03:50...activity there over the course of the last couple of weeks...
03:53...but especially in the wake of these...
03:55...two killings that we've seen in Minnesota.
03:57The killing of Rene Goodes and then the killing of Alex...
04:00...Pretty just on Saturday.
04:02Tensions there flaring, leading to more protests outside...
04:05...of that building.
04:06The National Guard has now been called in by Tim Walls...
04:09...the democratic government...
04:10...governor of the state...
04:11...to basically keep the peace between the federal officers.
04:15And the people there on the ground, the local people as well...
04:18...there were videos going viral yesterday...
04:20...on social media of the National Guard...
04:22...handing out donuts and coffee and hot...
04:25...chocolate to the protesters...
04:27...as they were there outside of that facility.
04:29So...
04:30...the US National Guard...
04:32...they're trying to kind of keep the peace...
04:34...and trying to...
04:35...to keep things calm between both sides...
04:37...but also significantly...
04:39...wearing high...
04:40...invisibility jackets...
04:41...to try to distinguish themselves...
04:43...from other federal law enforcement that is in...
04:45...in that area.
