The Renault 5 is definitely not a conventional car and not all of its swings hit their target. That's why in this video we're going to go through the 5 things that surprised me most about the Renault 5. And it's not all bad. So to find out what's going on, stick around as Dave Takes It On.

00:10One of the most popular cars in Europe,
00:13and now in the UK as well.
00:15So with my time with this one on the road,
00:17nearly three weeks, what have I found?
00:20That surprised me the most.
00:21And there's a couple of things in there
00:23that I'm gonna tell you they will surprise you.
00:25So here is my top five.

00:46We're also in front of a couple of Osprey Chargers.
00:49These are dual bays.
00:50And yes, they've got CHAdeMOs here as well.
00:52So it's 75 kilowatts for the CCS2.
00:55And 63, strange number for the CHAdeMO.

01:16It's really beginning to show my age on this.

01:20which is aimed at the Millenniums,
01:22who are much more internet savvy than I am.
01:25It is this little Renault character.

01:33it pops up.

01:36And it keeps on going,

02:06when that started popping up all over the place,
02:08was I got my eldest son...
02:10to find a way of turning it off.
02:11And the really good news...
02:13is you can.

02:20feature that should be banned from all cars.
02:22Number four...
02:23is actually quite the opposite.
02:25It's something that you don't find on many EVs...
02:27and it should be on every single EV...
02:30ever made or ever about to be made.
02:33So let's have a look what it is.
02:35We're dealing with the charging side of the business...
02:38and here is the charger port...
02:40simple push button opens.
02:41It's not that, by the way.
02:42There's a lot more going on.
02:44You've got your...
02:45normal plug.
02:46CCS2, of course, in the normal way.
02:48There's no difference there.
02:50You've got a push button there...
02:51which tells the car...
02:52whether the charging port is closed or not.
02:55And look down here.
02:56We've got an off button and we've got a padlock.
02:59Now, let me...
03:00explain.
03:01When we go out filming the number of times we come across cars...
03:05which have got the plug locked into the socket...
03:08and there's nothing they can do to...
03:10break it.
03:11I came across one in...
03:12on the M6 up north...
03:15which gentleman had a Polestar and it turned out that the...
03:20Polestar does not have any sort of button anywhere on it...
03:23or on the app...
03:24to release...
03:25this...
03:26and it relies on the charger to release it...
03:28and unfortunately he'd set it to 100%.
03:30state of charge...
03:31and he only wanted a short charge...
03:33and he couldn't get off it...
03:35until it got up to 100%...
03:37which took ages and spoiled his day.
03:40So...
03:41we find it...
03:42also Chester East services on the M56...
03:44we're in Nissan Leaf...
03:45was actually stuck in...
03:46and there was a grid serve engineer...
03:48trying to get him off at the time.
03:50So the feature here...
03:51is the little padlock.

05:57actively work against you...
05:58or really frustrate you...

06:08the cruise controller...

06:42up to 70 miles an hour...
06:43and then set it again...
06:45and then it would set...
06:46at 70 miles an hour...
06:48there is a little button...
06:49on the...
06:50the steering wheel...
06:51which will actually...
06:52do that for you...
06:53it will...
06:54ignore the set...
06:55button...
06:56which always sets the speed...
06:57you're doing...
06:58and it will allow you...
06:59to set whatever...
07:00to the speed limit...
07:01it's showing...
07:02so there is a work around...

07:04they don't tell you...
07:05these sorts of things...
07:05it's not intuitive...

08:21the speed limit is not what it actually is...
08:23there's very little you can do...
08:25to override it...

08:31there's a lot to say for this car...
