00:00Today I'm interviewing one of the most defining figures from the last quarter century of celebrity
00:05history a true icon Paris Hilton and I started our careers around the same
00:10time in the two thousands I wrote about her in the pages of the magazines I've worked for she was the
00:15original influencer as the socialite queen of the nightlife with the famous last name
00:20after a very public betrayal involving a leaked sex tape Paris did something people did
00:25expect she leveraged her notoriety and built a ground-breaking reality show
00:30an entertainment empire that she estimates to be worth one billion dollars today
00:35she's a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur with ventures in music fashion skincare and even
00:40as 30 fragrances and for many people the idea of Paris Hilton still comes
00:45up someone impossibly unrelatable wrapped in luxury and privilege she's the last
00:50person you'd imagine to be just like us but in recent years Paris has evolved beyond
00:55just being a successful businesswoman she's become more vulnerable and opened up to tell her full
01:00story and what was really going on behind the glitter and glamour in doing so she's made
01:05valuable contributions to the world in a 2020 documentary this is Paris she told her how
01:10the following story of being sent off to Utah's Provo Canyon School and became an advocate for
01:15survivors of the troubled teen industry leading to the passing of legislation reform she also
01:20uses her platform to talk about the misogynistic treatment of women in media and her charity
01:25work including launching funds for wildlife relief and is a vocal advocate for animals
01:30for international welfare and for the neurodivergent and the LGBTQ communities and so
01:35So although Paris may live the high life and may or may not have an entire...
01:40...dedicated to her 10,000 pairs of sunglasses, she has challenges and setbacks that...
01:45...to reveal, she may just be just like us. Today we'll dive deep into her life and...
01:50...documentary Infinite Icon, a visual memoir and assess how just like us...
01:55...this is Paris Hilton.
02:00So do you have a room for 10,000 sunglasses?
02:04I have lots of sunglasses.
02:05And that was at my other house that I just moved into. So this house...
02:10...has my glam room and it has my 10,000 sunglasses in it, yeah.
02:14So I like to start...
02:15...at my interviews with a little ritual about something personal about the person...
02:19...and I was so dumb.
02:20Confounded that you have 30 perfumes. I asked your team to send me some.
02:25...so that we could test them. So tell me about this one.
02:28This is my 30th fragrance.
02:30And it's called Iconic. And it is so beautiful. It has like...
02:34It really...
02:35...the rose tint. I love rose.
02:37Yes.
02:38It's like peony, raspberry...
02:40...rose. Those are some of the notes. And it's just like...
02:45...the house is just like very...
02:47...light, summery.
02:49...gorgeous.
02:50And I feel like men and women could both wear it.
02:53I would... I wear rose tint tones.
02:55And sometimes.
02:56I love it.
02:57What...
02:58If you've got 30 perfumes, how do you decide what...
03:00...to wear in the morning?
03:02I...
03:03...just kind of like what mood I'm in.
03:05I love that I have one literally for like every day of the month because there's 30.
03:08And do you only wear your own?
03:09Yeah.
03:10Yes.
03:11I've not worn another person's perfume since I was a little girl.
03:14But it's such a...
03:15...because when I was a little girl I would always go into my mom's boudoir and she collects perfumes.
03:20And my sister and I would be playing with all of them.
03:22And I was like, Mom, one day I'm going to have my own perfume.
03:25So...
03:25So now to have just released my 30th is just another dream come true.
03:28Well, it's not just like us to have...
03:30...but they are quite reasonable, right?
03:32What a surprise point.
03:33Yes.
03:34These are at Ulta Beauty.
03:35And for the size, this one's 80.
03:38So we're here in your craft room.
03:40And this helps your ADHD, right?
03:42It does.
03:43This is like...
03:44If you...
03:45If you looked inside my mind, what it looks like.
03:47I feel like the camera can't see at all because like...
03:50...the top with the rainbow and the butterflies, the clouds.
03:53Like...
03:54It feels like a dream.
03:55And when I walk in here with the kids, like we have so much fun doing art and just hanging out and...
04:00It's also my office and I love being able to look out the window and see...
04:05...like my 11-11 office and the waterfall and the just beautiful backyard.
04:10And all of it.
04:11It just...
04:12It's your safe space.
04:13Yeah.
04:14It just literally looks...
04:15Like when I was little, I would make like mood boards and like manifest what I wanted.
04:20In life, I really...
04:21Like this is what it was.
04:22And crafting gives you that...
04:23Yeah.
04:24That safe space.
04:25I love it.
04:26Well, you're...
04:27We're here in your home.
04:28It's absolutely beautiful.
04:29It's Beverly Hills.
04:30It is not quite just like us, but it is very unapologetically you.
04:35Are there any elements of just like us around the house?
04:38Are there like piles of unfolded lawns?
04:40Are there laundry?
04:41Are there dishes fill in the sink?
04:42I feel like it's just like...
04:45Any other family's house with kids.
04:47You know, there's toys everywhere.
04:49There's...
04:50Of course, like the laundry room as a laundry.
04:52Um, but then also we have like a water slide and...
04:55Like the pink tennis court and all the other fun things.
04:59It's like...
05:00The ultimate fun house.
05:01Like I feel like this is like the house I dreamed of since I was a little girl.
05:05So it's fabulous, but it's relatable and family just like everybody else.
05:09Just like regular folks.
05:10And I think that's what your new documentary really shows as well.
05:14It's an...
05:15It's an exploration into the human side of you, just like our side of you.
05:19Because it shows your...
05:20Life as a music icon and it marries that with the vulnerability of what...
05:25You've gone through.
05:26Behind the stardust and the glitter, it says I am...
05:30You're human.
05:31Like what do you want people to take away from the documentary?
05:34I feel that...
05:35This is really like a third part of a trilogy.
05:38Like the first time I really opened up...
05:40And, you know, showed people who I was, was through my first documentary.
05:44This is Paris.
05:45And then going even deeper through my memoir.
05:48And now in this part...
05:50With Infinite Icon, it's like my whole life through the lens of music.
05:55And just going back, you know, from the beginning, since I was a...
06:00Little Girl and all these dreams that I had.
06:02But then just going into so much more.
06:05Because I feel like within these past five years, I've just been on this whole journey.
06:10Of self-discovery and just learning so much and healing so much.
06:15And just so much has happened.
06:16So I just wanted to show that story and...
06:20I feel like it's also a story that others can relate to as well.
06:22I think we're going to talk through lots of those different points.
06:25On there, but to start with the music, I loved seeing you on the stage and so happy.
06:30And it being such a fulfilling journey.
06:32How does it feel to be up there when you're performing?
06:35When I'm on stage, it feels like the most incredible, magical feeling.
06:40In the world, just seeing everyone in the audience so happy and...
06:45excited and screaming and crying and singing along and dancing and just the...
06:50energy and love in the room is like another level.
06:53And when I'm up there, I just feel like...
06:55this was what I was born to do.
06:56It's funny because I've followed your career and worked with...
07:00you and covered your career for so long.
07:03And I never realized that music...
07:05was the pure love.
07:07And so, like, it made me wonder watching...
07:10the documentary.
07:11Do you feel that becoming famous before you explore music...
07:15hampered your ability to become a pop star quicker?
07:18Yeah, I do.
07:19I think that...
07:20just, you know, from doing The Simple Life, like a reality show...
07:23I think anyone who does reality...
07:25and then if they go into music...
07:27you're just not going to be taken seriously.
07:29And...
07:30especially during the early 2000s...
07:32when just the media...
07:34was...
07:35just extremely cruel to young women in the industry.
07:38So...
07:40it was always...
07:41really hurtful to me because it was just such a dream of mine,
07:44you know.
07:45ever since I could remember what I'd love to do...
07:47since I was literally, like, three years old.
07:49Like...
07:50I just...
07:51always wanted to be a pop star...
07:52but...
07:53I just felt that...
07:54my music didn't...
07:55didn't get the chance that it deserved...
07:56because...
07:57the media was controlling everything back then...
07:59and...
08:00now today, with social media, I'm actually able to hear what...
08:03the fans and people really think.
08:05so...
08:06And you can control your own narrative...
08:07and have your own voice.
08:08Yes, exactly.
08:09Well, I was a part of that media...
08:10you were at the time...
08:11I don't think I was mean to you...
08:12but I'd like to apologise...
08:13and...
08:14but...
08:15have you got any questions...
08:15for me about, like, at that time...
08:17covering the media and how unfair it was?
08:19Like...
08:20for you, I'm sure, just being in...
08:22the newsroom...
08:23Yeah.
08:24like...
08:25were you ever...
08:25pressured for them...
08:26to try...
08:27to make you...
08:28do or say things that you felt...
08:29like...
08:30uncomfortable asking?
08:31like...
08:32you felt like it was...
08:33going too far sometimes?
08:34I think there were times when there were...
08:35stories...
08:36where...
08:37I look back...
08:38and I'm like...
08:39why...
08:40did...
08:41they take that...
08:42direction...
08:43and it questions...
08:44I think...
08:45I believe media reflects society...
08:47and society was meaner back then...
08:49and that's...
08:50what people wanted...
08:51now people don't...
08:52want that...
08:53there's different meaner elements...
08:54on social media...
08:55but I think it's an...
08:56interesting question...
08:57or I think...
08:58there are certainly things...
08:59I regret being involved in.
09:00back at the time...
09:01and...
09:02I think the media has done better...
09:03in recent years...
09:04and I hope you find that...
09:05as well...
09:06definitely...
09:07I know that...
09:08so many of the things...
09:09you know...
09:10the way that...
09:10myself and other girls...
09:11were treated back then...
09:12would not happen today...
09:13it would not be accepted...
09:14so at least it's...
09:15changed for other people...
09:16so I think that's...
09:17like the silver lining...
09:18you had to go for...
09:19a lot of pain...
09:20to get there...
09:21a big theme from the documentary...
09:22of music saving your life...
09:23tell me...
09:24how that worked for you...
09:25just...
09:27you know...
09:28just from going through...
09:29so many traumatic experiences...
09:30as a teenager...
09:32and...
09:33you know...
09:34it was just so...
09:35painful...
09:36and traumatizing...
09:37and...
09:38when I got out...
09:39of those boarding schools...
09:40I just remember...
09:41like when I would...
09:42go out at night...
09:43it was like...
09:44the one thing...
09:45that I would just...
09:45forget about...
09:46all the pain...
09:47and just like...
09:48lose myself in the music...
09:49and have so much fun...
09:50and I just...
09:50felt...
09:51like this whole community...
09:52or I just felt...
09:53so accepted...
09:54and...
09:55no one was...
09:56judgmental...
09:55it was just...
09:56all about having...
09:57an incredible time...
09:58and...
09:59just...
10:00I don't know...
10:01I just...
10:02I love music...
10:03I love to dance...
10:04I love the lights...
10:05I love...
10:06the people...
10:05the escapism...
10:06yeah...
10:07you've been through...
10:08so much...
10:09and you touched...
10:10on some of it there...
10:10what has been...
10:11the hardest thing...
10:12to recover from...
10:13you've dealt with...
10:14sexual abuse...
10:15as a kid...
10:15so...
10:16the sex tape...
10:17the media treatment...
10:18what was the...
10:19what's...
10:20been the hardest...
10:20thing to heal from...
10:21do you think?
10:22hmm...
10:23all of it...
10:24you know...
10:25I think...
10:25these are things...
10:26that will...
10:27definitely affect me...
10:28for the rest of my life...
10:29but...
10:30especially...
10:30being...
10:31in these schools...
10:32which...
10:33my parents were told...
10:34it was called...
10:35a...
10:35emotional growth...
10:36boarding schools...
10:37and...
10:38they were sold...
10:39a lie...
10:40these places...
10:41are so many...
10:40manipulative...
10:41and...
10:42their marketing tactics...
10:43everything...
10:44they had brochures...
10:45where kids were...
10:45smiling...
10:46and...
10:47there was like...
10:48rainbows...
10:49and people were...
10:50riding horses...
10:51and everyone...
10:52looked so happy...
10:53in that situation...
10:54and...
10:55it was terrifying...
10:56just to be around...
10:57these adults...
10:58who...
10:58were literally...
10:59abusing...
11:00all of us...
11:01in so many ways...
11:02and...
11:03it's just...
11:04it took...
11:05many years...
11:06for me...
11:07to even talk about it...
11:08it was so...
11:08traumatizing...
11:09where it took me...
11:10you know...
11:1120 years...
11:12to even tell anyone...
11:13why do you think...
11:14there was...
11:15a shame...
11:16attached to it...
11:17definitely...
11:18and I think that's...
11:18the way they get away...
11:19with it...
11:20where they shame...
11:21the kids in these places...
11:22so much...
11:23where they're...
11:23we...
11:24were just too...
11:25embarrassed...
11:26and scared...
11:27to talk about it...
11:28and it was just...
11:28so...
11:29the things that happened...
11:30were just so like...
11:31crazy...
11:32it just...
11:33it...
11:33you wouldn't feel like...
11:34anyone would believe you...
11:35or...
11:36and...
11:37you kind of...
11:38go into...
11:38being told you're a bad kid...
11:39this is why you're here...
11:40yeah...
11:41and it just...
11:42it was just...
11:43it's horrible...
11:44what they do in these places...
11:45and plus...
11:46they get away with it...
11:47because they can...
11:48say to the parents...
11:48oh...
11:49they're...
11:50they're bad kids...
11:51they're lying...
11:52they're manipulating...
11:53they're trying to...
11:54you know...
11:55go home...
11:53so they're gonna say...
11:54that we're abusing them...
11:55they're gonna say this...
11:56they kind of tell the parents...
11:57what they're actually doing...
11:58they're lying...
11:59they're lying...
12:00and of course...
12:01if you're sending your child...
12:02to a place...
12:03and you think...
12:03they're gonna be protected...
12:04and you have no idea...
12:05the type of people...
12:06that work at these places...
12:08it's...
12:09you know...
12:10a recipe for disaster...
12:11I mean...
12:12I read some of...
12:13in your memoir...
12:13that...
12:14you're encouraged...
12:15to verbally abuse...
12:16each other...
12:17and then hug each other...
12:18afterwards...
12:18to untangle...
12:19mental abuse like that...
12:20it's...
12:21it just...
12:22I don't understand it...
12:23it blows my mind...
12:24how they think...
12:25that that's therapy...
12:26and when you go...
12:27into a place...
12:28and you...
12:28come out...
12:29more traumatized...
12:30than when you went in...
12:31Did it make you scared...
12:32of therapy...
12:33after that?
12:34Yeah...
12:33I've never had therapy...
12:34You've never had...
12:35therapy after that...
12:36because...
12:37it made me not...
12:38trust anyone...
12:38especially...
12:39people...
12:40like therapists...
12:41because I just thought...
12:42they were all...
12:43those type of people...
12:43and...
12:44um...
12:45it was just...
12:46a neat...
12:47that being a mom...
12:48it just makes me...
12:49even more...
12:50just...
12:51upset...
12:52and that's why...
12:53I just want to...
12:54continue...
12:55fighting...
12:56and using...
12:57leave them...
12:58in so many years...
12:59until...
13:00I've told my story...
13:01and now...
13:02it's started...
13:03an entire movement...
13:04it's been so difficult...
13:05especially for my mom...
13:06and dad to hear...
13:07about these things...
13:08because they had...
13:09no idea...
13:10the forgiveness...
13:11like even though...
13:12they were tricked...
13:13the forgiveness...
13:14process for you...
13:15with that...
13:14it must have been...
13:15so difficult...
13:16because I knew...
13:17that they had no idea...
13:18because that's...
13:19none of the parents...
13:20knew that this was happening...
13:21and...
13:22um...
13:23it's been...
13:24yeah...
13:25it's been like...
13:26a whole...
13:27my mom has just been...
13:28so...
13:29sad...
13:30just to hear...
13:31what has happened...
13:32and she's been...
13:33coming with me...
13:34to DC...
13:34to help speak...
13:35with the other parents...
13:36and...
13:37to let them know...
13:38her story as well...
13:39because it's important...
13:39for other families to know...
13:40because I feel like...
13:41the parents are just as much...
13:42the victims in this...
13:43well thank...
13:44thank you for using...
13:45your voice for good...
13:46thank you...
13:47it's been...
13:48the most meaningful...
13:49work of my life...
13:50like...
13:51when I was a little girl...
13:52I would have...
13:53no idea...
13:54that one day...
13:54I would be...
13:55I was...
13:56testifying in Congress...
13:57I would have passed...
13:58fifteen...
13:59state laws...
14:00and...
14:01the past two...
14:02federal bills...
14:03to protect children...
14:04so...
14:05it may...
14:04makes it all worth it...
14:05that I'm able to...
14:06help that from happening...
14:07to others...
14:08you should be...
14:09proud...
14:09so...
14:10instead of...
14:11traditional therapy...
14:12music's been something...
14:13that really has helped...
14:14to escape...
14:14and to disassociate...
14:15with a lot of the pain...
14:16and the healing...
14:17what...
14:18what...
14:19do you think...
14:19would have happened...
14:20if you didn't have music...
14:21to help you?
14:22I don't know...
14:23I think...
14:24out of thinking...
14:25of everything in my life...
14:26like music...
14:27art...
14:28and music...
14:29things...
14:30that helped me so much...
14:31and...
14:32even through doing...
14:33this documentary...
14:34I've just seen...
14:34like the power...
14:35in music...
14:36and...
14:37even the power...
14:38in listening to a lyric...
14:39and a song...
14:39like something...
14:40that could change your mood...
14:41or even change your life...
14:42and...
14:43just so many...
14:44of my fans...
14:45have come up to me...
14:46and said...
14:47thank you so much...
14:48for your album...
14:49it saved my life...
14:49like...
14:50thank you for your memoir...
14:51you have no idea...
14:52how much it means to me...
14:53so just to see...
14:54like the impact...
14:55it could make...
14:56on someone's life...
14:57and...
14:58I love that I'm able now...
14:59to have these...
14:59concerts...
15:00and create these...
15:01safe spaces...
15:02where my fans can come...
15:03and...
15:04dress up...
15:05however they want to...
15:04wear like...
15:05these outfits...
15:06and have so much fun...
15:07and just...
15:08lose their self...
15:09in my music...
15:09and have the most...
15:10incredible night...
15:11and forget about...
15:12anything bad...
15:13that's happening...
15:14in their life...
15:14what's...
15:15what's the darkest moment...
15:16you've been through...
15:17was it in...
15:18Provo?
15:19yes...
15:20just the...
15:21things that happened...
15:22to those places...
15:23should never happen to it...
15:24anyone...
15:25and especially...
15:26not a child...
15:27and...
15:28just...
15:29being terrified...
15:30every single day...
15:31of like...
15:32what was gonna happen next...
15:33and then having...
15:34severe nightmares about it...
15:36for...
15:37you know...
15:3820 years...
15:39until I started talking...
15:39telling my story...
15:40Were there moments...
15:41where you didn't want...
15:42to be here anymore?
15:43What...
15:44when I was in there...
15:45I was...
15:46it felt...
15:47everyone I felt...
15:48felt that way...
15:49like...
15:50you just...
15:49was like...
15:50it would be better...
15:51not to live...
15:52than being in these...
15:53type of places...
15:54um...
15:56but...
15:57it did make me really strong...
15:58where...
15:59it almost...
15:59prepared me...
16:00for Hollywood...
16:01in a sense...
16:02because I don't know...
16:03if I could have...
16:04survived the two...
16:042000s...
16:05and the way...
16:06I was treated...
16:07unless I had already...
16:08been through...
16:09such hell before...
16:09documentary...
16:10there was a line...
16:11that really stuck with me...
16:12where you said...
16:13life doesn't stop...
16:14life doesn't stop...
16:15with the drama...
16:16so neither should you...
16:17and I found it...
16:18really interesting...
16:19and something...
16:20I've tried to embrace...
16:21like...
16:22life is crazy...
16:23and bad things...
16:24are always gonna happen...
16:25and you've just...
16:24got to...
16:25power through...
16:26and we see that...
16:27in the documentary...
16:28when the fire...
16:29happens in the trailer...
16:29and you're...
16:30you've just...
16:31got to keep going...
16:32it's a pivotal moment...
16:33in the production...
16:34of the...
16:34at all...
16:35how do you...
16:36manage to carry on...
16:37when bad things happen...
16:38and...
16:39you're somebody who...
16:39things have happened...
16:40constantly...
16:41and you...
16:42are always smiling...
16:43you're always positive...
16:44from going...
16:44through so much...
16:45in my life...
16:46it's made me...
16:47so strong...
16:48and resilient...
16:49where...
16:50I can make it...
16:49through anything...
16:50so no matter what...
16:51life throws at me...
16:52it just continues...
16:53to make me...
16:54stronger...

18:28so difficult...
18:28and hard...
18:29I try to think about...
18:30all the beautiful things...
18:31that come with it...
18:32and I really see fame...
18:33as like...
18:34a superpower...
18:35to make people happy...
18:36so I love...
18:37that I'm...
18:38able to just...
18:39make people's days...

18:57so...
18:58even though...
18:59it has been...
19:00very traumatizing...
19:01at times...
19:02it's worth it...
19:03I like that...
19:04I love...
19:05love that you're...
19:06using your fame...
19:07and your platform...
19:08to do good in the world...
19:09how...
19:08how about...
19:09money...
19:10do you think...
19:11money brings you...
19:12happiness...
19:13it does...
19:14because I...
19:13I've worked so hard...
19:14and...
19:15success is something...
19:16that has always...
19:17really...
19:18been a...
19:18driving force for me...
19:19and...
19:20I feel very lucky...
19:21just to...
19:22grow up in my family...
19:23and have incredible...
19:24business mentors...
19:25with my grandfather...
19:26and my parents...
19:28and...
19:29I've always loved...
19:30to make them proud...
19:31and...
19:32I love that...
19:33I've...
19:33created this...
19:34entire brand...
19:35and empire...
19:36and now...
19:371111...
19:38my media company...
19:38so...
19:39it makes me happy...
19:40because I'm able...
19:41just to...
19:42feel...
19:43that happiness...
19:44and I think that...
19:45also...
19:46just from going...
19:47to those schools...
19:48and being so...
19:48controlled...
19:49that I made a promise...
19:50to myself...
19:51that I was gonna work...
19:52so hard...
19:53and become...
19:54so successful...
19:53that...
19:54no one could ever...
19:55control me...
19:56or tell me...
19:57what to do again...
19:58so I really see it...
19:58as...
19:59freedom...
20:00so you used...
20:01the pain...
20:02that you went through...
20:03and the restrictions...
20:03and the abuse...
20:04to...
20:05to drive your...
20:06your...
20:07your ambition...
20:08yes...
20:09what...
20:10do you say...
20:11to people who say...
20:12you've had it easy...
20:13because...
20:13you came from money...
20:14I could totally...
20:15understand people...
20:16saying that...
20:17because of course...
20:18I'm very privileged...
20:20that I'm...
20:21you know...
20:22came from a family...
20:23where...
20:23I've been able to...
20:24learn so much...
20:25from such incredible...
20:26businessmen...
20:27and women...
20:28just...
20:30you know...
20:31coming from my last name...
20:32as well...
20:33so...
20:33but I've seen a lot...
20:34of other people...
20:35who come from...
20:36you know...
20:37prestigious families...
20:38and...
20:39a lot of them...
20:40don't do anything...
20:41like...
20:42a lot of people...
20:43I know...
20:43like...
20:44they just get like...
20:45an allowance...
20:46from their parents...
20:47still...
20:48they've never worked...
20:49a day in their life...
20:50and...
20:48I've also seen...
20:49just how unhappy...
20:50they are...
20:51because I feel like...
20:52they have no...
20:53fulfillment in life...
20:54because...
20:53they...
20:54are just handed everything...
20:55and...
20:56they've never had to work...
20:57for any of it...
20:58so...
20:58yes...
20:59I can understand people...
21:00they don't know...
21:01and don't see...
21:02how much work...
21:03has went into...
21:03everything that I do...
21:04and...
21:05just how...
21:06what I've created...
21:07and what I've built...
21:08and...
21:08what I've...
21:09been through...
21:10on top of all that...
21:11so...
21:12I think...
21:13if people know me...
21:14they understand...
21:15but then...
21:16if there's like...
21:17an outsider...
21:18who just...
21:19you know...
21:20sees the name...
21:21Paris Hilton...
21:22but like...
21:23my grandad...
21:24paid for me...
21:25to go to...
21:26journalism school...
21:27everybody's gonna get...
21:28some help...
21:29how much...
21:34you...
21:35you...
21:48you...
21:49house or anything like that no i did everything on my own so that's really not fair that people
21:54criticize you for being not believing that yourself made because there's a new york post
21:59saying fans are reacting saying she's delusional thinking she's self-made if they actually knew
22:15you
22:04everything and saw everything they would understand that's that's really interesting so
22:09congratulations how will you handle that balance with your own kids because of a
22:14business and obviously you've been incredibly successful how will you create the balance of
22:19trying to work out how much to support to give them ah i think it's you know
22:24just from growing up in this way and seeing so many others i think if you spoil your
22:29children you will destroy them so that's something that my husband and i talk about where we
22:34of course want to give them the most beautiful life make them so happy but
22:37we also want to instill that
22:39work ethic in them and make them want to do something with their own lives and i think with my babies
22:44growing up and seeing just how hard i work and everything i accomplish it's going to be really
22:49inspirational to them and that's why i've built so much at the house where i have like my
22:54recording studio here the podcasting studio the photo studio just like so much
22:59with my work i'm able to do from home and my kids are always there watching everything so i think
23:04i feel like that will be instilled in them just like anytime i'm in a meeting here like they're sitting on my lap
23:09so like i feel like even though they're babies they're soaking it in and they'll continue to do so
23:25you
23:14throughout their life so um yeah i think for my kids i just want them to be
23:30I feel like I've been such an open book in the past five years where I've discussed
23:35everything so I don't really think there's any anymore I feel like I've cleared
23:40up so many misconceptions I feel like before they just you know thought I was a dumb
23:45blonde because of the simple life but I've proved that I am not a dumb blonde I'm just very good
23:50pretending to be on well that comes on to my next question actually
23:55I loved in the movie when you're doing a recording and somebody says
24:00you can use your real voice on this one and it reminded me I was on your BFF show
24:05with you back in the day and we would record and you'd have this baby voice saying that's
24:09hot and then we'd go
24:10off and you'll be with Benji talking about beats in this voice so low and I was just
24:15like she's two different people and so like you you pretended to be some
24:20body was that where did that come from was that protectionism protect
24:25protecting yourself by being a caricature or was that strategically to play a role
24:30part and earn money I think you know I didn't even realize until you still do
24:35that what was a higher low that that was lower see I literally can't even control it I think it's
24:40just such a part of me now because I've been doing it for so long but I do think it was
24:45a trauma response to what I went through where I just kind of wanted to build this perfect
24:50like a Barbie doll life and like a Disney
24:55kind of Barbie character and then you know getting this
25:00simple life and then the producers telling me you know we want you to play this kind of blonde
25:05spoiled airhead and play into this character and this was the first reality show
25:10and I had no idea I'd have to continue on that character for five seasons straight
25:15and then every talk show and everything I would go on I would be the character and then I just kind of got
25:20stuck in it almost because the whole world thought that's who I really was and I'm also a very
25:25naturally shy person so I feel like being the character it made it easier for me
25:30to kind of be silly and say say ridiculous things I don't know I feel like
25:35if the simple life had me talking in my normal voice and not playing the character it would not have been the show
25:40that it was I can see that I know Nikki your sister and she's shy too and
25:45that that shyness comes across with both of you and it's an understanding that like
25:50you're playing a part to get through social anxiety sometimes I'll do that at parties
25:55like I've got to be down wait for tonight so like how do you deal with social anxiety now
26:00I still have social anxiety and I think that might be the ADHD
26:05as well because I'm just so in my head all the time and I get just I think
26:10also since the pandemic like I've gotten just like way more anxiety than I used to
26:15um but then if I'm around like if I bring like the best friend or like I'm with like
26:20a group of people I trust then I feel more comfortable but if I'm just like going in some
26:25somewhere and not knowing anyone sometimes I get a little nervous I think that's normal I feel
26:30like everyone I mean it's just like us it's just like regular folks everybody deals with mental health issues but people
26:35wouldn't imagine that Paris Hilton this striking beautiful blonde woman with everything would would
26:40be nervous going into going into an event yeah I think people would definitely be surprised
26:45to know that what's your relationship with the character of Paris Hilton these days
26:50well I think before I saw it as like a form of protection and now
26:55I see it as like my just fun silly side like
27:00you know there's a time and place for everything and like when I'm doing
27:03tiktoks or just like doing certain
27:05content or you know like different campaigns with brands and they want me to play the character like
27:10I am I will do it and I love doing it
27:13um and then
27:15obviously when I go to DC and I'm speaking on Capitol Hill and talking about serious
27:20subjects that's when you see like the real side of me
27:25but yeah I just like I can do it back and forth we can all have silly sides and serious sides
27:30so it's fun I think a lot of artists and people do like they are a lot of people I've
27:35spoken to like actors Beyonce, Sasha Fierce, JLo, Jennifer Lopez
27:40like we all have that and then we all have the one when we're at home
27:43you know chilling in our sweats
27:45and just like laid back and just like ourselves
27:48so you are just like us
27:49you're playing the part
27:50of an entitled heiress but now 20 years have passed I have to ask you the question
27:55was the warm up question set up or did you really not know what a warm up was at the time?
28:00I did
28:03you did that
28:04I did yeah
28:05I just thought it would be a funny line
28:08and you came up with a line
28:09I just yeah
28:10it wasn't like I thought about it in advance because I didn't even know we were going to talk about Walmart
28:14but when it came
28:15I was like in my mind I was like this will be funny I had no idea it would be such an iconic line that
28:20people to this day still say and now I have like my entire
28:25kitchenware kitchenware and homeware and your fragrances were in mobile
28:28all of it yeah so
28:30when was the last time you were in Walmart?
28:32I was there two weeks ago in Arkansas actually
28:35I go there all the time to go meet with the whole team out there and I was showing them all
28:40new products from my new line for Paris and Pups and my new homeware line and kitchenware
28:45and storage line and all of it I have so I have like over four
28:50hundred SKUs of products inside of Walmart so now I know they don't sell walls they sell
28:55Paris Hilton Prada
28:56you're just a comedy icon
28:58moving on
29:00and something a bit more difficult the sex tape it's really heartbreaking looking back on the
29:05in the documentary and you talk about it that you had no agency about this besides
29:10Pamela Anderson you were the first celebrity to go through this public
29:15and the internet was different copyright was different it was a wild wild west
29:20and now it would be impossible to happen like was there no way of stopping
29:25stopping it coming out how was that time it was just
29:30humiliating so painful I did not want to leave my house I was just
29:35it was just you know just trust somebody and have
29:40them violate me like that was just the most horrible
29:45thing that you could do to a person and there was nothing that I could do about it
29:50and um yeah that's something that will haunt me the rest of my life
29:55and if that happened today it would be illegal
29:59um
30:00so
30:01I mean I think like another
30:03another thing I went through
30:04that now would be
30:05like
30:09you
30:13you
30:15you
30:16you
30:05legal for people today.
30:06So I think that, again, is the good part that other girls don't have to go through that.
30:10But, yeah, that was...
30:13I mean, when you frame it...
30:15that this was a young girl who was coerced to do this and then was...
30:20publicly humiliated and then flogged for it afterwards, it's like...
30:25really wasn't fair.
30:27I'm not going to mention the name of the guy because...
30:30you cleverly didn't do that in the dark.
30:32Have you ever spoken to that ex again?
30:34No.
30:35Would you ever have a conversation with him?
30:37No.
30:38Have you thought about...
30:40when your kids find out about the sex tape and how you'll approach it with them?
30:45That's going to be a really just painful...
30:50subject to talk about.
30:51Like, I don't even know.
30:52Like, I haven't even thought about what I'm going to say since they're...
30:55only two years old right now.
30:57Um...
30:58but...
31:00hopefully by talking to them, they'll never have...
31:05something like that happen to them or they'll be taken advantage of.
31:08So it's just...
31:10horrible.
31:11And now just being a mom again, just thinking about that just makes me even...
31:15sadder for me that I had to go through all that and so publicly and have people vilify me.
31:20for it when I was just a 19-year-old kid, basically.
31:23Yeah, the media would just...
31:25brutal for you, the news media, particularly the expert in the documentary...
31:30said, you're targeted because of your intelligence to play the game effectively.
31:34We kind of played the game...
31:35together, similar to Princess Diana.
31:37You worked with the press at times, welcomed them into your life...
31:40composed for the paparazzi.
31:41Do you think you paid the price for that by welcoming them?
31:45from the media?
31:46I didn't think that was fair at all.
31:47I was always respectful and...
31:50and I knew that people were just trying to do their job, so I would...
31:54always...
31:55be nice to everyone.
31:56I never...
31:57was one of those celebrities that would, you know, tell them off or...
32:00or go off on them like I've seen some people do.
32:03So I just thought it was...
32:05really unfair the way that they did that.
32:07I'm going to read some of the headlines from the documentary.
32:10And just ask you, like, how did they make you feel back then?
32:15Like, the idea that this was a description of a young woman in her early 20s.
32:19Paris Hilton...
32:20What's the point?
32:21Famous for nothing.
32:22Bimbo summit.
32:23No brains.
32:24All fame.
32:25A new...
32:25Bimbo summit.
32:26Yeah, there's a lot of people who know the celebrity culture.
32:27You're human, just like the rest of us.
32:29How did that feel at the...
32:30time it was really hurtful you know i was just a young girl just
32:35living my life but i had the whole world watching and judging and
32:40picking everything apart and just i felt like no matter what i did
32:45or what i accomplished people just refused to
32:51i don't know just see see me as like a human being it was just like
33:09you
32:55a cartoon character or like a punchline that they just make fun of
33:00and it just always hurt my feelings because i've always been such a sensitive person as well
33:05and then on top of it when having adhd we experience
33:10emotions like 10 times more than a neurotypical person
33:16and especially there's something called rsd which is rejection
33:34you
33:20which is 99 percent of people with adhd experience
33:25so to have things like said like that is just
33:30physically painful like it's like
33:35being stabbed in the heart like it's just
33:37like it's just
33:38I would cry so much all the time, just like constantly
33:41hearing things and people.
33:43Making up lies and stories, it was just a nightmare.
33:47What would you say to the...
33:48the people who write those headlines now?
33:51Say, look at me now, honey.
33:53I've always loved proving people wrong.
33:58How much of my career had been underestimated and misunderstood.
34:01So now, today, just to see...
34:03my life and everything that I've accomplished
34:06and my beautiful family.
34:08And just everything that I've done.
34:11And now, I've had so many people...
34:13I've had so many people come up and apologize to me.
34:15So many reporters...
34:17just...
34:18people on the street have said that.
34:19If I'm doing an interview, just so many people have said,
34:22I'm so sorry for the...
34:23the way that myself and others treated you,
34:25because you did not deserve that.
34:27So it feels...
34:28it's very healing to hear that from people,
34:30to realize that they know it was wrong.
34:32What advice would you...
34:33give...
34:34to the...
34:35to the young girl who's going through that now?
34:37Hmm.
34:39My advice would be that...
34:42you should...
34:43you shouldn't listen to people like that.
34:45That...
34:46what matters most is what you think of yourself.
34:48So don't let that outside noise affect how you feel about yourself.
34:53because...
34:54a...
34:55a lot of people...
34:56can be mean, especially...
34:58you know, now with the internet and...
35:00you know, people are able to hide behind a computer.
35:03and...
35:04It's a different form of meanness now.
35:05Yeah.
35:06It's different.
35:07I feel like the media, it wasn't like that, but then there...
35:08there's like the internet trolls who are just like...
35:10these people living in like...
35:12their parents' space.
35:13in the basement, like miserable, with no life.
35:15and like...
35:16just sit on the computer all day, just writing...
35:18rude things to people.
35:19Like...
35:20I just would tell them like...
35:21I would feel bad for this...
35:22these people.
35:23that they...
35:24are that miserable...
35:25that they need to go and...
35:27and try to...
35:28tear...
35:28tear you down...
35:29and don't let it affect you.
35:30In the movie, I found it really interesting...
35:32you talking about your...
35:33ADHD and thank you.
35:34I think...
35:35like...
35:36I believe with mental health challenges...
35:37it's so important to talk about them.
35:38and normalize them...
35:39and destigmatize them...
35:40and make people feel less alone...
35:41and...
35:42you've been a...
35:43leading person with ADHD to do that.
35:45and...
35:46the quote that really hit me from the documentary was...
35:48I have all the success...
35:49but I wish I could be as happy as someone...
35:51without the ADHD...
35:53demon voice...
35:54who had had all these things...
35:55still have...
35:56would have had all these things...
35:57so...
35:58how...
35:59do you still feel like that?
36:01It's...
36:02it's gotten...
36:03much...
36:03much better...
36:04like...
36:05now that I've...
36:06really...
36:07studied...
36:08and researched...
36:08know...
36:09so much about my ADHD...
36:10but...
36:11growing up...
36:12no one was talking about it...
36:13especially...
36:13with...
36:14young girls...
36:15so...
36:16I had no idea...
36:17like...
36:18being in school...
36:18and constantly...
36:19getting in trouble all the time...
36:20like...
36:21not able to focus...
36:22like...
36:23always...
36:23in detention...
36:24always failing...
36:25like...
36:26all the tests...
36:27because I couldn't remember anything...
36:28or like...
36:28losing my homework...
36:29just like...
36:30so many things would happen...
36:31and...
36:32you know...
36:33people with ADD...
36:34would just...
36:33be called...
36:34like...
36:35bad kids...
36:36and I think that's...
36:37you know...
36:38one of the reasons...
36:39I got sent away...
36:40to these schools...
36:41focus in school...
36:42or anything...
36:43no matter...
36:44how hard I tried...
36:45um...
36:46and then...
36:47now knowing...
36:48that...
36:49the voices...
36:50from...
36:51that...
36:52that are negative...
36:53self-talk...
36:54are not true...
36:55like...
36:56that is always...
36:56a good thing...
36:57so anytime I do...
36:58have that happening...
36:59I'll just...
37:00immediately say...
37:01that's not you...
37:02that's just your ADHD...
37:01so that's how you manage it...
37:02that's really...
37:03I really love sharing...
37:04the solutions...
37:05that's how you...
37:06I talked to this...
37:07amazing doctor...
37:08named Dr. Hallowell...
37:09who was like...
37:10one of the leading...
37:11ADHD...
37:12psychiatrist...
37:13and...
37:14he has it as well...
37:15and he called...
37:16the demon...
37:17it's called...
37:18DMN...
37:19which is like...
37:20the default mode...
37:21network...
37:22what the real...
37:23term port is...
37:24in the documentary...
37:25you call it...
37:26the demon...
37:27I found it...
37:26fascinating...
37:27the idea that...
37:28all these mean things...
37:29are being said...
37:30about you...
37:31in the press...
37:31but it's worse...
37:32in your head...
37:33that you were saying...
37:34worse things...
37:35about yourself...
37:36so...
37:36that was just...
37:37painful...
37:38and I think...
37:39through doing...
37:40this documentary...
37:41like...
37:41I never even gave...
37:42myself the credit...
37:43for like...
37:44how much I survived...
37:45even going through that...
37:46like...
37:47after everything...
37:46I'd already went through...
37:47in these schools...
37:48then...
37:49you know...
37:50coming out...
37:51into Hollywood...
37:52and then having...
37:51the media...
37:52say all these crazy things...
37:53like...
37:54it was just...
37:55it was...
37:56so traumatizing...
37:58back then...
37:59so I'm so...
38:00like...
38:01grateful...
38:02now...
38:03to have healed...
38:04from that...
38:05and now I'm able...
38:06to tell my story...
38:07to others...
38:08because I know...
38:06there's so many...
38:07other...
38:08you know...
38:09kids...
38:10who have ADHD...
38:11who I'm sure...
38:12are going through...
38:11the same thing...
38:12right now...
38:13and...
38:14just to...
38:15tell them...
38:16and let them know...
38:16that this is something...
38:17that we all experience...
38:18and that those things...
38:19are not true...
38:20and...
38:21to be strong...
38:22and to lean on...
38:23in on it...
38:24as your superpower...
38:25because I wouldn't be...
38:26the woman...
38:26and I am today...
38:27without it as well...
38:28I wouldn't be...
38:29the entrepreneur I am...
38:30I wouldn't be...
38:31the creative I am...
38:31I wouldn't have...
38:32so many different businesses...
38:33without the ADHD...
38:34so...
38:35I want...
38:36to inspire others...
38:37that...
38:38this can be a superpower...
38:39and you can just lean in...
38:41to what you love...
38:42they say that...
38:43we can't focus...
38:44but...
38:45that's not true...
38:46we can...
38:46keep our focus...
38:47like no other...
38:48we just can't...
38:49focus on things...
38:50that are boring...
38:51but the things...
38:52that light us up...
38:53we will focus...
38:54like a superhero...
38:55that's really interesting...
38:56it's just...
38:56that all of our brains...
38:57have worked differently...
38:58and so...
38:59the fact you're talking about it...
39:00and normalizing this...
39:01and showing it's actually...
39:02a positive...
39:03not a negative...
39:04is a great example...
39:05for society...
39:06because...
39:07I've had so many...
39:08families...
39:09kids...
39:10people come up to me...
39:11and say thank you...
39:11so much...
39:12for writing your song...
39:13ADHD...
39:14like...
39:15my child...
39:16used to be so ashamed of...
39:16it...
39:17but now...
39:18that's their anthem...
39:19and they're singing it...
39:20every morning...
39:21and telling everyone...
39:21ADHD...
39:22is my superpower...
39:23so I love how I'm able...
39:24to reframe it...
39:25especially...
39:26for these young kids...
39:26growing up with it...
39:27because I know...
39:28that a lot of them...
39:29are struggling...
39:30and back in the noughties...
39:31you felt...
39:31I couldn't...
39:32admit...
39:33to having any...
39:34any weaknesses...
39:35and now...
39:36it's different...
39:36opening up with your...
39:37vulnerabilities...
39:38is your superpower...
39:39yes...
39:40for sure...
39:41growing up...
39:42in the...
39:412000s...
39:42like...
39:43no one was even...
39:44saying the word...
39:45mental health...
39:46like...
39:47if you heard that...
39:48they'd be like...
39:49what?
39:50certain...
39:51I've done a lot of work...
39:52in the mental health...
39:53space...
39:54that like...
39:55everybody...
39:56has got somebody...
39:57in the family...
39:58who's going through...
39:59something...
40:00to...
40:01clinical depression...
40:02and it...
40:03people don't talk about it...
40:04and we should encourage...
40:05to make people...
40:06feel less alone...
40:07so thank you...
40:08for all of your work...
40:09thank you...
40:10I think it's amazing...
40:10seeing this new generation...
40:11and how open they are...
40:12just how...
40:13you know...
40:14we were all...
40:15taught like...
40:16if anything's wrong...
40:17don't talk about it...
40:18just like...
40:19everything's fine...
40:20but when you do...
40:20talk about things...
40:21it just shows like...
40:22the power of vulnerability...
40:23and telling your truth...
40:25and just like...
40:26letting it out...
40:27and it just like...
40:28helps you so much...
40:29and then it makes...
40:30others feel...
40:30safe to open up as well...
40:32and then it starts like...
40:33this whole domino effect...
40:34where so many people...
40:35can heal...
40:36around the world...
40:37So you are just like us...
40:38the relatable things...
40:39are what matter...
40:40so all of my gay friends...
40:41are totally jealous...
40:42I'm here with you...
40:43at your house...
40:44and...
40:45until I saw...
40:46this documentary...
40:47I didn't really realize...
40:48why you were a gay icon...
40:50and...
40:51I had tears...
40:52streaming down my face...
40:53when you said...
40:54they are the ones...
40:55who gave me the greatest gift...
40:57showing me...
40:58what it truly means...
40:59to live my truth...
41:00for so long...
41:00I was weighed down...
41:01by the shame...
41:02over what I went through...
41:03in the troubled teen industry...
41:04I've never...
41:05heard a straight person...
41:06understand...
41:07the shame...
41:08that gay people go through...
41:09living in a world...
41:10feeling othered...
41:11and not feeling welcomed...
41:13and the fact...
41:14that you could empathize...
41:15with that...
41:16with what you've gone through...
41:17I found that really powerful...
41:18so...
41:19thank you...
41:20when did you realize...
41:21your similarities...
41:22with the gay community?
41:24Just...
41:25especially...
41:26getting out of those schools...
41:27and then...
41:28David LaChapelle...
41:29and I...
41:30we've been very close friends...
41:31forever...
41:32and I was one of his muses...
41:33and he would take me...
41:34to all the gay clubs...
41:35so I was hanging out...
41:36with him...
41:37and Amanda Lepore...
41:38and Patricia Field...
41:39and that whole club...

51:04I feel like so safe with him where I feel like anything is possible.
51:08And that's...
51:09That's an amazing feeling.
51:10It's been so hard to trust people with everything that's happened.
51:14And, you know, I met him at a time where I just was like, I'm not...
51:19I'm not even gonna get married.
51:20I'm not gonna be with anyone.
51:21Like, I don't need a man.
51:22And that's what I was thinking.
51:24And then met him.
51:25So they always say, like, love will find you when you're not looking for it.
51:29And I never believed that either.
51:30But I guess it's true because it worked with me.
51:34And so you've done so, so much.
51:38What unfinished business...
51:39What have you still got to prove?
51:41What's next?
51:42I feel like I've...
51:44Accomplished, like, everything that I would want to in life.
51:47But I'm just gonna continue.

52:50Cryotherapy.
52:51Um...
52:52Hyperbaric chambers.
52:53The number one thing.
52:54Uh...
52:55For longevity.
52:56Which I'm obsessed with.
52:57Um...
52:58I just invested into...
52:59Brian...
52:59Johnson's company as well.
53:01Uh...
53:02Blueprint.
53:03Which I'm obsessed with.
53:04Uh...
53:04Um...
53:05So I think, yeah.
53:06It's important...
53:07To do all of those things.
53:08Try to stay out of the sun.
53:09But...
53:10Yeah.
53:11That...
53:12Red light really does work.
53:13I have like a whole red light bed.
53:14Which I'm obsessed with.
53:15And...
53:16I'm building...
53:17An entire spa downstairs.
53:19Which would be like...
53:20An 8,000 square foot...
53:21Longevity center and spa.
53:23So we got...
53:24From an 8,000 Longevity spa.
53:26To testing out just like us.
53:28Because...
53:29That...
53:30That's not quite just like us.
53:31But...
53:32Now it's time to find out...
53:33How just...
53:34Paris Hilton really is.
53:35It's a quick fire round.
53:36Okay.
53:37Questions will come fast.
53:38The answers...
53:39Should come faster.
53:40And there's no hiding from your humanity.
53:42Are you ready to prove you're just like us?
53:44Stars.
53:45Yes.
53:46Stars Are Blind is one of my top five karaoke songs.
53:48But it's really...
53:49Really hard to sing.
53:50Um...
53:51Are you just like us?
53:52And have you ever sung...
53:53Um...
53:54Karaoke?
53:55Yeah.
53:56I love karaoke.
53:57What are your songs?

54:05Classic.
54:06How much help do you have around the house?
54:09Yeah.
54:10We have like...
54:11The nannies.
54:12The people who helped take care of the house.
54:13And...
54:14The handyman.
54:15And...
54:16Yeah.
54:17All of them.
54:18And I love...
54:19I love them so much.
54:20They're like part of the family.
54:21What's the most surprisingly normal thing you do every day that no one...
54:24would ever expect from Paris Hilton.
54:26Most normal thing.
54:29Just...
54:30Being with my kids in the morning.
54:32Eating cereal.
54:33Well...

54:44Because she is just like us.
54:45How much do you spend on a glam in a year would you estimate?
54:49And...
54:50I don't know.
54:51I've never looked into that.
54:52But I'm sure a lot.
54:53What's one...
54:54Household chore you secretly love doing yourself?
54:57I don't know.

55:09When was the last time you pumped gas?
55:11I used to pump gas when I used to drive everywhere.
55:14But...
55:15I honestly never leave the house now.
55:16Like...
55:17Unless I have to.
55:18And...
55:19Then I have a driver.
55:20And then...
55:21I'm always just going directly from here to the airport and flying somewhere.
55:24So I have not done gas in a long time.
55:27But if I was driving, I would...
55:29I would do it.
55:30I don't mind.
55:31You would.
55:32I don't mind.
55:33Okay.
55:34You are just like us.
55:35Well, thank you for sharing your incredible...
55:34journey and the wisdom that you've imparted and how you've helped people along the way.
