00:00Protests continued in Minneapolis overnight following the weekend killing of
00:05Alex Petty by an ICE officer. U.S. President Donald Trump has also shifted
00:10his tone with Democratic leaders in the state following conversations he had on Monday.
00:15White House officials meanwhile have been left scrambling as anger mounts following
00:20the killing of the second U.S. citizen in Minneapolis in a matter of weeks by ICE.
00:25For more on this story we can go across to Fraser Jackson standing by in Washington.
00:30Fraser, what are you hearing about the administration's ICE operation now on the ground in Minneapolis?
00:35Well the commander at large for custom
00:40and border patrol is being removed from his post in Minneapolis and will be returning to California.
00:45This of course in the wake of the killing of ICU nurse Alex Petty by border patrol.
00:50officers on Saturday the agency's commander then Greg Bovino he basically
00:55spent the weekend lashing out at critics on TV and online.
01:00One interview with CNN he said it was actually the border patrol agents who were the true victims.
01:05In Saturday shooting something he also repeated online where he replied to many
01:10comments which led to Homeland Security officials removing his access to his social media.
01:15accounts that again according to CNN. Well Bovino's claims that Petty
01:20wanted to quote massacre law enforcement were of course undercut by the video evidence.
01:25of the shooting that then came out online and the White House pulled back from the heated retro
01:30district that other high ranking officials have also engaged in. That includes the Department of Homeland Security.
01:35Secretary Kristi Noem who called Petty a domestic terrorist. Caroline Levitt on Monday said.
01:40that the president hadn't characterized the 37 year old nurse for veterans in the same way.
01:45and tried instead to speak about what the White House says is.
01:49and tried instead to speak about what what the White House says is.
01:50an alleged fraud scandal which was a key reason for the federal deployment of Minnesota and the.
01:55first place, but allegedly Trump is not happy with what is happening.
02:00In Minnesota, the optics of what's happening in Minnesota, and now he's started.
02:05He's starting to shift his stance on the deployment of federal officers there slightly, sending
02:10his borders are Tom Homan to the region.
02:13He will be landing there today.
02:15And we'll be meeting with local law enforcement.
02:17He is seen as somebody who is a moderating force.
02:20A career immigration official and somebody who will act as a linchpin.
02:25Between the government and the state and local officials there.
02:30On the ground in Minneapolis.
02:31Frasier, just yesterday we had the U.S. president who...
02:35posted on Truth Social that he had great conversations with Governor Tim Walz.
02:40And Mayor Jacob Frey, what happened?
02:45What changed?
02:46Because just a couple of days ago, he said these were...
02:50officials who couldn't run the state.
02:51Yeah, but...
02:55Trump has been on those calls with both Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and also Minnesota...
03:00Governor Tim Walz, who said that he asked Trump to end the immigration...
03:05enforcement surge in the city.
03:06Jacob Frey said that Trump agreed with him that the present situation...
03:10cannot continue, which of course means that Bovino will now depart the...
03:15twin cities with other agents also being stood down in the area.
03:19There are currently around three...
03:203,000 federal officers deployed in Minneapolis.
03:23That though, outnumbering local police...
03:25there by over three to one, which is what prompted Tim Walz to call the state's National
03:29Guard in to help...
03:30keep the peace.
03:31But Donald Trump is fully aware of the optics of this situation.
03:35And of course, it is losing congressional support from even some Republicans who are now calling for...
03:40greater oversight.
03:41Well, the latest that we have on that and on the kind of movement...
03:45from the White House is that late on Monday, there was a meeting for nearly two hours...
03:50inside the Oval Office between Donald Trump and some of his top aides with Kristi Noem.
03:55under DHS Secretary and her aide, Corey Lewandowski.
03:58Now, a source told the...
04:00New York Times that there was no suggestion that her job was at risk and that the meeting was actually at...
04:05Noem's request, but one key person who was not at that meeting was Stephen Miller.
04:10who, of course, many believe is the man behind these policy, these policy ideas.
04:15from the president.
04:16And there's also an interesting movement there that Noem is having a meeting with Donald Trump...
04:20in the Oval Office the same day that Tom Holman gets announced to be heading to Minneapolis.
04:25because Noem and Holman reportedly don't get on with each other.
04:30So, you know, there has been an idea that there's been a bit of a shift in the administration there.
04:35But the White House is very much adamant that Noem is not going anywhere.
04:40Frazier, you mentioned optics. I'm just curious, how does Donald Trump's MAGA base view...
04:45the killing of the second US citizen in the city of Minneapolis.
04:50in just a couple of weeks, two Caucasian people...
04:55I might add, who have been killed. So, how does Trump's base view all of this?
05:00Well, like many things in America, this has become...
05:05deeply politicized and many in America see different things when they see the same...
05:10video there. But I think it was something that has really touched the MAGA base and it's kind of...
05:15really made them push back against this is the notion that this man was...
05:20carrying a weapon. Of course, we have concealed carry laws here in the United States and Alex...
05:25Prezzi has a weapon on him, but he was legally carrying that firearm.
05:30And the immediate suggestion from the administration that these people...
05:34that people cannot...
05:35carry a weapon whenever they go to a protest elsewhere...
05:38really prompted a backlash...
05:40from significant amounts of people within the conservative and MAGA movement...
05:44even the...
05:45NRA, the National Rifle Association, push back on this and...
05:50push back against one regional attorney general who...
05:55tweeted that and that has kind of caused a bit of a stir online. Of course, Donald Trump...
06:00has long said that he is somebody who supports the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms...
06:05Caroline Levitt said that no one had done more for the Second Amendment than this current president...
06:09but there has...
06:10been a significant debate online about the fact that Donald Trump and his administration have...
06:15been...
06:16their point on this has been arguing that the man was carrying a weapon and therefore...
06:20caused a threat considering they have been the people pushing these laws in the first place...
06:24but of course...
06:25it is also sparking wider...
06:27wider debate about these tactics being...
06:30used by ICE, by Customs and Borders Patrol agents...
06:35and the polling for these raids has actually now gone through the floor...
06:40whilst people may agree with Donald Trump's immigration tactics in terms of...
06:45trying to get illegal aliens out of the country...
06:48the smash and grab technique...
06:50and the optics that are spreading...
06:52spreading online and on social media...
06:53are not as popular...
06:55as Donald Trump thinks that they were when he went into the election...
