00:38The courtier's head!
00:40The courtier's head!
00:45The courtier's head!
00:50The courtier's head!
00:53Think over here pushing people!
00:55What's your name and badge number?
00:58Unfortunately, we can still see your face, Loyola!
01:12There's been a lot of confusion and concern in Italy about reports that officers from U.S.
01:17Immigration and Customs Enforcement are going to be taking part in the Winter Olympics in
01:21Italy.
01:22Now, the concern is about President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda.
01:26And ICE is really the agency that is most responsible for carrying out that agenda.
01:31And a lot of Italian politicians have simply said, we don't want ICE here.
01:35But there's a lot of nuance about ICE and about the units that make up ICE that are important
01:40to note here.
01:42Part of ICE is enforcement and removal operations.
01:45Those are deportation officers, the ones most closely responsible for carrying out the deportation,
01:51the arrest, the deportation of people in the country.
01:55But there's also a unit called Homeland Security Investigations, HSI.
02:00Those are the agents that are going to be going to Italy.
02:02HSI agents generally do things that have some sort of a cross-border nexus, investigations
02:08like human trafficking, drug smuggling, trying to find lost, stolen cultural artifacts.
02:15And they often take part in international events like this because of their expertise.
02:20Now, to be fair, under the Trump administration, Homeland Security Investigations have been doing more
02:48immigration enforcement work, and they do sometimes work closely with deportation officers.
02:53But there's no indication that they're going to be doing anything like that here in Italy.
02:57And there's no indication that deportation officers are going to be part of the officers going to Italy.
03:02And working in these big international events is something that HSI does quite frequently.
03:08The Department of Homeland Security has said that they will not be doing immigration enforcement
03:12while they're in Italy, and that they are going to be going there to help mitigate the risks
03:17of transnational crime. And that is something that HSI has experienced dealing with.
