00:00Well, the big development today is that 31-year-old man has now been charged with intent to do
00:07harm in such a way as to endanger life, health or safety, and with making or possessing explosives
00:12under suspicious circumstances. He was arrested by police in the heart of Perth's CBD. Not
00:18long after, he is alleged to have thrown that item towards the stage at an invasion day
00:23rally around midday. Yesterday, police very quickly evacuating the area, moving people
00:29on. They say when they got the item and started to examine it, they found that it contained
00:35screws and ball bearings and was surrounded in some kind of liquid. And as you say, the
00:40police commissioner now saying that police will allege that that device was intended to
00:45explode on impact. He's told Nine Radio that it appeared the man had tried to light a fuse.
00:52That'll be what police are alleging and that for whatever reason, that didn't happen. Now,
00:57that was unfolding in the city yesterday in a large exclusion area set up. Police were also
01:02coming out to where I am now in Perth's north in the suburb of Warwick, searching one of
01:08the homes just behind me, one of the rear units here. Officers from the tactical response group
01:13and a range of other officers searching the property. It's unclear what exactly its connection
01:18is to the incident, but neighbours who I've spoken to this morning say they were really surprised
01:24to see that kind of police presence in what is really quite a quiet outer suburban area.
01:30Well, we just disbelieve really. I mean, we just don't understand it because, you know,
01:35it's all very quiet here and everybody peaceful. You know, it's very simple community and we have
01:45gatherings here every month at least, once down on the street and get on very well. And yeah,
01:54I've never noticed anything really.
01:55We understand those investigations are continuing. WA police are now being assisted by the National
02:02Joint Counter Terror Team. We've been told that that is not necessarily an indication that there is
02:08a terror element to this, but that given the investigation is still in its early stages,
02:14that is standard practice. The man is due to appear before court later today on those charges
02:21as that investigation continues and as people across Perth come to terms, I guess, with this news
02:28and what police allege could have been at that rally yesterday.
