A new trial has begun in Slovakia for Marian Kocner, the man accused of ordering the 2018 killing of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova. The case shocked the nation and sparked mass protests against corruption.

Kocner was previously acquitted twice due to lack of evidence, but both rulings were overturned by Slovakia’s Supreme Court. Kuciak had been investigating links between politicians, business figures and organized crime. The retrial is expected to continue with hearings throughout the year.
