00:00The House leadership refers to impeachment complaints filed against President Ferdinand
00:07Marcos Jr. to the Justice Committee and dozens more missing after a ferry capsized off the coast
00:12of Basilan. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court rules 94 members of the Talents Association
00:18of GMA Network are regular employees. U.S. federal immigration agents kill another U.S. citizen.
00:24And E.J. Obiena opens his redemption season with a bronze medal in Germany.
00:37The House leadership forwards two impeachment complaints filed against President Ferdinand
00:41Marcos Jr. to the Justice Committee. This marks the start of a process that could remove him from
00:46office if successful. The first petition was endorsed by Pusong Pinoy Representative Jet Nisay
00:51and the second petition endorsed by the three-member Makabayan bloc. The referral came after Speaker
00:56Bo GD included the two complaints in the order of business in the plenary on the first House
01:00session after their break. There were earlier concerns that only the complaint endorsed by
01:04Nisay, which was filed a week ahead of Makabayan's, would be sent to the Justice Committee. If the
01:09Makabayan-backed petition were not transmitted at the same time, it would be deemed useless since the
01:14Constitution allows only one impeachment proceeding against an impeachable official per year.
01:19Meantime, House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos says he is inhibiting from the impeachment proceedings
01:23to avoid any perceived conflict of interest.
01:28At least 18 people are dead with several dozens missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Basilan
01:34past midnight Monday, January 26. Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman says about 223 passengers have so far
01:41been rescued and brought to the Isabela City port. Strong waves flooded the lower deck of the passenger
01:46cargo vessel, causing it to capsize. The ship, MV Trisha Kirstin III, departed from Zamboanga City and was
01:53bound for Holo in Sulu. Commercial vessels are also helping rescue operations being done by the
01:58Armed Forces of the Philippines and local authorities. This is the second major incident involving a vessel
02:03owned by Allison Shipping Lines. In March 2023, the MV Lady Mary Joy III caught fire near Balok Balok Island,
02:11while also sailing to Holo from Zamboanga City.
02:15The Supreme Court has ruled that 94 members of the Talents Association of GMA are regular
02:20employees of GMA Network. This ending an 11-year legal battle and setting a major president for
02:25media workers in the country. In a resolution made public on Saturday, January 24, the SC declared
02:31there was indeed an employer-employee relationship between the network and the workers. In a statement,
02:36Tagg said, quote, talents are regular employees deserving of security and statutory benefits.
02:42It adds, now there is jurisprudence to protect the next generation of media workers in the Philippines.
02:48GMA Network argued that their talents are not regular employees but independent contractors.
02:53This means they were not entitled to benefits and protections which the law guarantees for regular
02:58employees. But the SC says the respondents were not independent contractors based on the general
03:03terms attached to their talent agreement. The case between Tagg and GMA dragged on for more than a
03:08decade after GMA appealed the case both in the Court of Appeals and the High Court.
03:15U.S. immigration agents shot and killed another U.S. citizen in Minneapolis,
03:19sparking fierce protests and condemnations from local leaders, the second incident this month.
03:25The Department of Homeland Security says a Border Patrol agent fired in self-defense after the 37-year-old
03:31Alex Preti allegedly approached with a handgun and resisted disarmament. But bystander videos from
03:37the scene verified by Reuters showed the man holding a phone in his hand, not a gun. This as he tries to
03:42help other protesters who have been pushed to the ground by agents. The shooting of Preti drew hundreds
03:47of protesters to the neighborhood to confront the armed and masked agents. Demonstrations also broke out
03:53in New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco among other cities. It also raised tensions between state and
03:58federal officials already at odds with the Trump administration over the shooting of another
04:02U.S. citizen, Rene Goode, on January 7.
04:07Filipino pole vaulter E.J. Obiena opens his 2026 season on a strong note after winning bronze at the
04:13ICE staff indoor Dusseldorf in Germany. Obiena cleared 5.65 meters to place behind Meno Vloon of
04:19the Netherlands and Sam Kendricks of the United States in the eight-man competition. Obiena is coming off what
04:24he has described as his worst year, dropping to world number 11 after once ranking as highest number
04:292 behind two-time Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden. But Obiena ended
04:35the past year in style, winning gold at his home event, the Atleta Ayala World Pool Vault Challenge,
04:41and claiming his fourth straight Southeast Asian Games title.
