00:00Sabah's fight against plastic pollution advanced after a four-month zero-waste community project
00:07in Kampung Gerinsingh, Mengkabong, Tuaran, successfully equipped villagers with recycling
00:13skills and conducted a massive community cleanup. The grassroots initiative, which began in September
00:192025, transformed how villagers handle waste, turning it into resources while building awareness
00:25and leadership. Driven by non-governmental organization Zero Waste Sabah, with support
00:31from the all-party parliamentary group Malaysia on UN Sustainable Development Goals, the project
00:37provided hands-on training in waste segregation, composting and recycling. Over four months,
00:43villagers attended workshops on zero-waste practices, learned to make compost and fruit enzymes,
00:49and established a community compost site to manage organic waste locally.
00:54Zero Waste Sabah founder Ruth Yap said the pilot project demonstrates that zero-waste solutions
01:01successful in countries like the Philippines, India and Vietnam are replicable in Sabah.
01:07She said that community-driven models can succeed where waste-to-energy incineration falls short,
01:12urging the government to invest in community-based alternatives to address Malaysia's waste crisis.
01:17Yap adds the project created a waste collection system that both collects waste and educates
01:23the community, increasing local awareness of plastic pollution, recycling, and sustainable waste management.
