00:00Over 50 ships and 20 planes have vanished without a trace in this area.
00:06The Bermuda Triangle still sends chills down people's spines.
00:10And now, it's given us another mystery.
00:13What could happen next?
00:15Scientists have discovered a strange new mystery under the North Atlantic,
00:19right beneath the Bermuda Archipelago.
00:23It's an infamous region.
00:24You must have heard about the Bermuda Triangle, right?
00:27It's a huge area in the North Atlantic, roughly between Florida, Bermuda, and the Greater Antilles,
00:35roughly forming a massive triangle.
00:38Experts haven't agreed on its exact boundaries yet,
00:41but it covers hundreds of thousands of square miles.
00:45You must have heard creepy stories about ships and planes disappearing in the triangle.
00:50We'll talk about it a bit later.
00:52Right now, another mystery is looming on the horizon.
00:57Below the island of Bermuda, researchers have found an enormous rock layer about 12.5 miles thick.
01:04And it's way thicker than anything like this anywhere else in the world.
01:08Normally, the ocean floor has a crust at the bottom, and below that is the mantle.
01:14But under Bermuda, there's an extra layer right beneath the crust,
01:19inside the tectonic plate the island sits on.
01:21It's a totally unexpected structure, and scientists aren't sure how it could form.
01:27This discovery might explain a long-standing mystery about Bermuda itself.
01:32The island is located on an oceanic swell.
01:35That's a part of the ocean floor that's higher than its surroundings.
01:40Now, usually, a swell like this comes from volcanoes.
01:42But there's no evidence of any ongoing volcanic activity there.
01:48Bermuda's last known eruption occurred 31 million years ago.
01:52That's why the discovery of this new rock layer is so important.
01:57It may be the clue to a baffling mystery.
02:00Researchers think the last eruption might have pushed mantle rock up into the crust.
02:04This rock then froze in place, forming a kind of raft that lifted the ocean floor by about 1,600 feet.
02:12And this giant frozen structure may be what keeps the Bermuda archipelago on an oceanic swell,
02:18high above the surrounding ocean floor.
02:22You see, some island chains form because of hot spots deep under the earth.
02:27Hot rock rises from the mantle, melts, and creates volcanoes.
02:31When this happens, the ocean floor gets pushed up.
02:35But after that, as tectonic plates shift,
02:38islands slowly drift away from the hot mantle plume that created them.
02:43They cool down, sink under their own weight,
02:46and leave a trail of old volcanoes behind.
02:49Over millions of years, many of these once tall islands sink below the ocean.
02:55Some become underwater mountains.
02:57Those are called seamounts.
02:58And if erosion flattens their tops near the surface, they're called Gaia's.
03:04A perfect example is the Hawaiian Emperor Chain.
03:08Hawaii's Big Island is still active and above water.
03:11But as you go northwest, the islands get older, smaller, and eventually sink below the ocean.
03:18Bermuda is different.
03:20Its swell hasn't gone down,
03:22even though it hasn't had a volcanic eruption in millions of years.
03:26To figure out this mystery, scientists used a seismic station on Bermuda.
03:32They looked at how waves from big earthquakes around the world
03:35traveled under the island at a depth of about 31 miles.
03:39They noted where the waves changed speed,
03:42and it helped them find a huge thick layer of rock under Bermuda.
03:46Interestingly, this rock is less dense than the surrounding material,
03:51acting like a raft,
03:52keeping the ocean floor lifted and explaining the island's swell.
03:57Research shows that the lava from Bermuda is low in silica,
04:01which means it came from a rock that is high in carbon.
04:04And the analysis of zinc in rock samples suggests that this carbon came from deep in the mantle.
04:11It was likely pushed there when the supercontinent Pangea formed between 900 million and 300 million years ago.
04:18This is different from islands formed over hotspots in the Pacific or Indian Oceans.
04:22One of the reasons may be that the Atlantic is a younger ocean,
04:26created when Pangea split, while the Pacific and Indian Oceans are older.
04:31And Bermuda's location, once at the heart of Pangea, may help explain why it is so unique.
04:38Scientists are now studying other islands to see if similar rock layers exist,
04:43or if Bermuda is truly one of a kind.
04:47Understanding extreme locations like Bermuda
04:49help scientists figure out the normal and unusual processes that shape our planet.
04:55Now, the Bermuda Triangle itself has fascinated and frightened people for over a century.
05:02Officially, the Bermuda Triangle doesn't even exist.
05:05No world map marks it,
05:07and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names doesn't recognize it as a real region.
05:12But people still know about this location and fear it.
05:16Stories of unexplained disappearances in the area date back to the mid-19th century.
05:22But the phrase Bermuda Triangle didn't appear until 1964,
05:27when the region was described as a triangular stretch of ocean
05:30that had destroyed hundreds of ships and planes without a trace.
05:34In 1918, the USS Cyclops vanished without explanation while traveling from Brazil to Baltimore,
05:43taking 306 crew members with it.
05:46Decades later, in 1945,
05:49Flight 19 disappeared over the same waters,
05:52leaving no wreckage and no clues.
05:55American writer Charles Berlitz added fuel to the mystery
05:58in his 1974 bestseller, The Bermuda Triangle.
06:02He even linked the disappearances to the mythical lost city of Atlantis.
06:07But despite the stories,
06:09the Bermuda Triangle isn't unusually dangerous.
06:12Studies, including one by the World Wildlife Fund in 2013,
06:17show that it's not even among the world's 10 most hazardous shipping areas.
06:22The region sees heavy daily traffic by both sea and air,
06:26which makes it one of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet.
06:29So, why all the mystery?
06:32The Bermuda Triangle gets hit by tropical storms and hurricanes all the time.
06:37The Gulf Stream, a powerful ocean current,
06:40dashes through the area and causes sudden and extreme weather changes.
06:44Compass readings can get tricky here too.
06:47The Agonic Line, where True North and Magnetic North align,
06:51sometimes passes through the triangle.
06:53And below it all lies the Atlantic's deepest point,
06:57the Milwaukee Depth.
06:58It plunges 27,500 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench.
07:04These factors combined can lead to accidents that will make anyone believe
07:08there's something mysterious going on in the region.
07:11No wonder people have always been wondering about what's going on there.
07:15A few theories emerged.
07:17Let's take a look at the most plausible ones.
07:19So, one thing to consider is rogue waves.
07:23These are super big sudden waves that pop up out of nowhere.
07:27They're at least twice as tall as the waves around them, like walls of water.
07:32They're really dangerous for ships and anything in the ocean.
07:35Add all those severe storms and powerful currents in the triangle,
07:39and you'll understand that a ship could get smashed in seconds in such conditions.
07:44Some scientists talk about methane bubbles coming up from the ocean floor.
07:50According to them, if enough of that gas hits the water at once,
07:54it actually makes the water less dense, and this can actually cause a ship to sink.
07:59Sure, this phenomenon doesn't happen all the time,
08:02but it's enough to make people nervous.
08:04Then, there's the magnetic stuff.
08:07Back in the day, compasses would freak out in the Bermuda Triangle
08:11because true north and magnetic north sometimes line up here.
08:16So, sailors get totally lost.
08:19GPS fixes that these days, but in the past,
08:22it caused serious headaches and led to rumors and urban legends.
08:26Plus, as we already know, the weather is severe in that area.
08:30Hurricanes, tropical storms, and the Gulf Stream
08:33can turn calm waters into a total nightmare in no time.
08:38But a lot of it is just human error, too.
08:42The Triangle is one of the busiest shipping routes on the planet.
08:46Pilots and captains can mess up, especially in bad weather or at night.
08:50Flight 19 is a classic example.
08:53Once we mix heavy traffic with all those natural hazards,
08:57accidents are just going to happen.
08:59So, even though the Bermuda Triangle is kind of scary,
09:03mostly, it's just nature doing its thing.
09:06And we just need to deal with it.
09:08We still have a lot to explore and discover in that region,
09:11and we need to learn to navigate that area.
09:16That's it for today.
09:17So, hey, if you pacified your curiosity,
09:19then give the video a like and share it with your friends.
