Some places on Earth make the Bermuda Triangle look tame, with disappearances, violent weather, and strange natural forces that defy explanation. From volcanic lakes that can explode without warning to deserts where entire caravans vanished, these regions have frightened explorers for centuries. Scientists now know that many of these “cursed” places hide rare geological or atmospheric conditions that can flip from calm to deadly in seconds. Whether it's magnetic anomalies, toxic gases, or unpredictable storms, each location has a real, scientific danger behind the legends. And in this video, you’ll explore the most terrifying spots on the planet and learn why they’re far scarier than the Bermuda Triangle ever was. Animation is created by Bright Side.

00:01There's something really bizarre going on at these 12 points scattered across the Earth.
00:07The Vile Vortices, as they're called, are these creepy spots over the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn,
00:13and the North and South Poles, where weird forces seem to take over.
00:19You've probably heard of the most famous one, the Bermuda Triangle.
00:24It's believed that more than 50 ships and 20 airplanes have mysteriously disappeared in this area,
00:31which is located between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.
00:35But what most people don't realize is that the Bermuda Triangle actually has 11 siblings,
00:41and these other spots can be even more terrifying.
00:46Let's start with Mohenjo-Daro.
00:49This was a thriving city located in what is now Pakistan.
00:53Built around 2500 before the Common Era, this urban center was once home to about 40,000 people.
01:02But then, suddenly, people abandoned it by the year 1700 before the Common Era.
01:09In the 1940s, an archaeologist discovered 39 human skeletons at the site,
01:14which fueled the theory that the city was invaded by some other civilization at some point.
01:20But honestly, it's hard to confirm that.
01:23Since archaeology doesn't really explain the city's sudden destruction or the disappearance of its people,
01:29it's led to a bunch of bizarre theories.
01:32One of them talks about an ancient extraterrestrial race that might have lived there,
01:37and a malevolent wind that swept through the city.
01:41Another ancient city with a similar mystery is the Great Zimbabwe.
01:47Its construction began in the 11th century, and at its peak, it housed up to 18,000 people.
01:53But for reasons we'll probably never fully understand, it was abandoned in the 15th century.
01:59Archaeologists were really interested in this place, and that's when things got even weirder.
02:06They found eight of these birds, now called the Zimbabwe birds.
02:10These soapstone sculptures were found sitting on stone columns that were over 90 centimeters tall.
02:17Nothing like them has ever been found anywhere else, and their meaning is still a total mystery.
02:22Some think each bird represents a new king, but other theories suggest they were ancient animals very dear to the people who lived there.
02:33Adding to the mystery, local legends talk about a strange, short man who's sometimes seen wandering around,
02:40but he always disappears before anyone can get close.
02:45Then, there's Easter Island, another one of the 12 vile vortices.
02:50It's located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and it's famous for its nearly 1,000 enormous statues called moai.
02:59We still don't know what they mean, or how they were made.
03:03Some of them are almost 30 feet tall and weigh as much as 80 tons.
03:08Today, it wouldn't be that tough to move and carve these statues, but we're talking about a period between the years 1100 and 1680.
03:17So nobody really knows how they did it.
03:20Some specialists believe these statues were carried across the island, while others think they were pushed on log rollers.
03:29But the most bizarre theories suggest extraterrestrials were involved.
03:34Algeria is another land rich in ancient mysteries.
03:39And one of the most fascinating is something called the Jeddars.
03:44These are 13 monuments with square stone bases and angular mounds, built between the 4th and 7th centuries.
03:52But the weird part is, no one knows their purpose.
03:55One of them had an inscription in Latin, but it was so worn down that the message was nearly impossible to read.
04:02The best guess so far is that these monuments were probably tombs for royalty, although no one knows exactly who was supposed to be buried there.
04:11What we do know is that there are many myths related to strange disappearances in the region.
04:18The next mysterious spot is located south of Tokyo, in the Pacific Ocean, and it's called the Dragon's Triangle.
04:27Does that name ring a bell?
04:29Yep, just like the Bermuda Triangle, this area is known for strange disappearances of airplanes and ships.
04:35One of the most chilling stories dates back to 1945, when a plane allegedly vanished.
04:42The pilot supposedly sent a radio transmission right before the aircraft disappeared, claiming that something strange was happening in the sky, like it was opening up or something.
04:53While this story is definitely eerie, the truth behind it and many other Dragon's Triangle legends is still up for debate.
05:01If you type Hamakulia Volcano into Google Earth, you'll find it located in Hawaii's Ring of Fire.
05:09But this place is so shrouded in mystery that it's hard to find much information about it.
05:14Some legends speak of unusual electrical energy being detected in the area.
05:19And there's even a story about an eyewitness who claimed to see a plane flying over it totally disappear from the radar.
05:26Another eerie spot is the South Atlantic Anomaly, which is an area on Earth where natural radiation flows out of control.
05:35While this doesn't affect our daily lives on the surface, it has a pretty big impact on Earth's atmosphere.
05:41The radiation there is so intense that it can knock out the onboard computers of spacecraft and interfere with the data collected by satellites passing through the area.
05:50To deal with this, specialists had to add an additional shield to the International Space Station.
05:56The South Atlantic Anomaly is also linked to a weird event that astronauts experience called Cosmic Ray Visual Phenomena.
06:06They've reported seeing random flashes of light or shooting stars out there in space, but it's all just some kind of illusion.
06:15From wild radiation to strange seismic activity.
06:20The Wharton Basin in the Indian Ocean is a place known for unusual tectonic events.
06:26In April of 2012, a massive earthquake measuring magnitude 8.6 hit the region.
06:33This was considered the largest intraplate earthquake ever recorded, meaning it happened within a tectonic plate rather than at its boundary.
06:42This caught the attention of scientists, who now speculate that the region might be forming a new boundary between the Australian and Indian plate.
06:51But for now, this is all still one big mystery.
06:56Now, let's head to the Pacific Ocean.
06:58More specifically, to the New Hebrides Trench.
07:02This submarine trench is about 750 miles long and 45 miles wide.
07:08It formed when the Australian plate slid under the New Hebrides plate.
07:13There's no doubt that this is one of the creepiest and deepest spots in the ocean.
07:18The danger isn't just down in the deep sea, either.
07:21As this trench has been connected to several earthquakes that affected New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
07:27This area also has some strange features.
07:30For example, when scientists explored it, they didn't find a single grenadier fish down there.
07:37This type of fish is one of the most common deep sea creatures you'd expect to see in trenches around the Pacific.
07:43So, why aren't they around the New Hebrides Trench?
07:47Maybe they know something we don't.
07:50The two remaining vile vortices are the North and South Poles.
07:55These two are on the opposite ends of the planet, but they share one thing in common.
08:00Strange disappearances.
08:03One of the most famous stories from the North Pole happened in 1897.
08:07Three brave explorers set out on a journey to reach the North Pole using a hot air balloon.
08:13But they never completed their mission.
08:16Their mysterious disappearance remains one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries in the history of Arctic exploration.
08:24The South Pole is also known for similar mysteries.
08:28It's believed that hundreds of people may be buried beneath the snow and ice of the coldest continent on Earth.
08:35Even with all the advancements in technology and knowledge, the South Pole can still be extremely dangerous for anyone who ventures there.
08:43The temperatures can drop to almost minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit, and the winds can get up to 200 miles per hour.
08:52And that's definitely enough reason to stay away.
08:56Now that you're familiar with the 12 vile vortices, let me tell you something even stranger.
09:01If you look at a map, you'll see that these places are arranged in a way that looks pretty similar across the globe.
09:09Here's the weird part.
09:11If you connect these spots where unexplained events have occurred, you actually form the geometric shape of an icosahedron.
09:18This could be just a huge coincidence, but the fact that these mystery spots align with this shape makes them even more intriguing.
09:27Why has only the Bermuda Triangle become famous?
09:34You know, there are other mysterious triangles where ships disappear for strange reasons, too.
09:40The Triangle we're going to visit may seem to you much more dangerous and scarier than the Bermuda one.
09:49People tell stories about extraterrestrial ships, portals to another dimension, or Atlantis in the Bermuda region, and you've probably heard all this stuff.
09:58But the Triangle I'm talking about has other legends.
10:02Imagine that you're sailing on your boat and notice a round ship in the middle of the endless ocean.
10:08A mysterious woman standing on the deck of this strange ship, staring at you.
10:14Yeah, such stories go around the Dragon Triangle.
10:18And if you try to figure out something about this place, you'll find that even the Triangle's location is a mystery.
10:26This place is located near the Japanese coast in the Pacific Ocean.
10:30The Triangle extends from Japan to the Bonin Islands and touches the Philippine Sea.
10:36But this is not its exact geolocation.
10:38Some records say the Triangle is 70 miles east of the Japanese coast, while others say it's about 750 miles away.
10:49This difference in coordinates is because the region where the Triangle is located is not marked on any maps.
10:55The exact dimensions of these waters are still unknown.
10:59The Dragon's Triangle is also called the Pacific Bermuda Triangle.
11:03It's like an evil twin brother of the latter, but it's older.
11:09The fact is that reports of strange disappearances of ships in this region appeared much earlier than reports about the Bermuda Triangle.
11:18For the first time, people found out about the mysterious power of this place back in the 13th century.
11:25The grandson of Genghis Khan sent 40,000 people on ships toward Japan to conquer the country.
11:33Their route passed through the Dragon's Triangle.
11:37However, these people didn't reach the shore because of typhoons in this zone.
11:43So all the ships sank.
11:45After this incident, Genghis Khan's grandson changed his mind about attacking the country.
11:49Immediately after that, people in Japan began to believe that this place had magical powers.
11:57In the modern world, divers and archaeologists have tried to decide whether this story is true.
12:04They've explored the bottom of the Triangle and found artifacts from the sunken Mongolian fleet.
12:09A few centuries later, in the early 1800s, another story happened there.
12:17Sailors who traveled through the Dragon's Triangle saw a strange ship that looked similar to Japanese equipment for burning incense.
12:25There was only one person on board.
12:28It was a mysterious woman.
12:30However, no one could find out who she was.
12:32In the 1940s and 50s, reports about ships disappearing in the region of the Triangle began to arrive.
12:41Fishing boats and large ships went missing.
12:44Japan sent a research ship there to find out the cause of the disappearances.
12:48But that vessel with 31 crew members was also gone.
12:53The wreckage of the research vessel was discovered later, but no one found the crew members.
12:57People began to recall the legends about this place.
13:03According to one of the myths, dragons live under the surface of the ocean.
13:08They destroy ships and take people to satisfy their hunger.
13:12Such stories are thousands of years old.
13:15But over time, in addition to fairy tales, scientific hypotheses began to appear.
13:21Scientists have tried to find out what's so peculiar about this place.
13:25One suggested that cold and hot currents mix and then pass through areas that attract strong electromagnetic waves.
13:34And when these mixed hot and cold currents meet these waves, they form electromagnetic interference.
13:41Electronic equipment on ships begin to break down and navigation devices fail.
13:47At this moment, a storm starts and vessels become helpless.
13:50They can't send distress signals or determine their location.
13:55Another theory says that underwater volcanoes are at the bottom of the triangle.
14:01They spew hundreds of thousands of tons of magma, churn the waters, and create giant waves.
14:07Seismic activity often happens off the coast of Japan.
14:13So, this theory is quite logical.
14:16Also, volcanic activity can explain ancient legends about underwater dragons.
14:21Besides, islands often appear and disappear in this region.
14:26When magma cools down underwater and creates layers, they move upward and form land.
14:33Then, during the next eruption, they collapse and go underwater.
14:38But some of them remain.
14:40So, imagine some ship sailing.
14:43And then a huge island rises from underneath and cracks its hull.
14:46Perhaps methane hydrates destroy ships.
14:52These substances come out of the Earth's crust, form large bubbles in the water, then rise and explode.
15:00Such a giant bubble can damage a ship's hull or even destroy a vessel.
15:05Anyway, scientists don't know for sure the reason for the disappearance of boats yet.
15:11And in general, all those mysterious cases that have occurred in that place are, most likely, nothing more than legends.
15:21The Dragon and Bermuda Triangles are in the oceans.
15:25But, how about a triangle in a lake?
15:28It's located between Michigan and Wisconsin, right inside Lake Michigan.
15:33In 1950, a plane with 108 passengers on board disappeared without a trace while flying over the lake.
15:41When the search began, rescuers found a few pieces of the aircraft on the water.
15:47Besides the plane, many ships have gone missing there.
15:51Sometimes, people disappeared into thin air, right from boats.
15:55One such case happened in 1937.
15:58The ship was sailing through the Lake Michigan Triangle when Captain George Donner went to rest in his cabin.
16:04Three hours later, one of the crew members knocked on the door to wake the captain, but no one answered.
16:12When it became clear that something was wrong, the sailor walked inside, but saw no one there.
16:18The captain seemed to have vanished. The crew couldn't find him.
16:23Until now, the disappearance of Captain George Donner remains an unexplained mystery.
16:29It may be all fiction, but the Lake Michigan Triangle is creepy.
16:34And how about a triangle that's on the ground?
16:40This is the Bennington Triangle.
16:42It's located in the southwestern part of Vermont, USA.
16:46This is a place you really should avoid.
16:49There are many scary stories around it.
16:53It's up to you to decide whether they're true or not.
16:55In November 1945, a group of hunters passed through this area.
17:01A 74-year-old man was walking ahead of the group.
17:05And right in front of several people's eyes, he made a step and disappeared.
17:10No one could find him.
17:12The hunters called rescuers, but they didn't help.
17:16In December of 1946, several students went camping.
17:21An 18-year-old girl led a large group.
17:23She walked a few feet forward to figure out where to go next.
17:28And... disappeared.
17:30The tourists called the police.
17:32Officers began searching the area.
17:35And the FBI joined them.
17:37They got some information from locals living in nearby towns.
17:41They said that some girls similar to the description
17:45had been walking with a man much older than her.
17:48The two of them left by car and were never seen again.
17:51Soon, a similar vehicle was found not far from New York.
17:56The car was burned.
17:58So the police and experts couldn't confirm that the missing girl was inside.
18:04Three years later, a man disappeared on the territory of the triangle.
18:09He was waiting for a bus at the last stop.
18:11When the bus arrived, he got inside, but didn't reach his destination.
18:17He didn't get off the bus and didn't appear anywhere else.
18:21The police couldn't find any trace of the missing man.
18:24But the most terrible case occurred in 1950.
18:28Near the Bennington Triangle, a woman was driving a truck with her young son.
18:34She stopped the car and left for a few minutes to drop by a store or gas station.
18:40But when she came back, there was no one in the car.
18:43The police were combing the area.
18:47In the search, they used sniffer dogs, which managed to get on the boys' trail.
18:52The dogs followed the path and stopped at one place in the forest.
18:57The trail ended there.
18:59And you know what that spot was?
19:00The place where that student girl disappeared in 1946.
19:06That's it for today.
