00:00:00Oh, what a go!
00:00:02Oh, look at that! Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:05Rudy O'Connor!
00:00:07Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:30MUSIC PLAYS
00:00:49Evening, five games on tonight's Match of the Day,
00:00:52featuring teams in need of wins at both ends of the table.
00:00:55Alan Shearer and Ashley Williams will have it all covered.
00:00:59Liverpool are yet to win in the Premier League in 2026,
00:01:02having drawn their previous four.
00:01:04They travelled to Bournemouth, who've won just once in their last 13.
00:01:07Commentary from Simon Brotherton.
00:01:10Few fixtures have been more profitable for Liverpool
00:01:13than those against Bournemouth.
00:01:14Winning all but one of the last 14 meetings,
00:01:17a run which includes 4-0 victories here
00:01:19on three separate occasions in recent years.
00:01:23Bournemouth make one change.
00:01:25Marcus Tavernier scored but also injured a hamstring
00:01:28against Brighton on Monday and is replaced by Adam Smith.
00:01:31Evan Ilsen has scored in each of the last two home matches.
00:01:34New signing Alex Tote, the Hungarian international,
00:01:37from Ferenc Varos is on the bench.
00:01:40Liverpool go with ten of the starting eleven
00:01:42from the midweek win at Marseille in the Champions League.
00:01:45Cody Gakpo starts instead of Hugo Eketike.
00:01:48Ibrahima Kanate is on compassionate leave.
00:01:51So Joe Gomez plays in central defence.
00:01:53And Mo Salah starts in the Premier League for the first time in just over two months.
00:01:58It's been some season for Bournemouth at the start of November.
00:02:02They were second in the table, having won five of their nine matches.
00:02:07Gakpo finding Salah.
00:02:10Here's Virch, suddenly in space.
00:02:13Smothered by Bournemouth's defence.
00:02:16Soboslai almost in for the opening goal of the match.
00:02:19Bournemouth very nearly falling behind inside the opening quarter of an hour here.
00:02:25Superb defending from Adam Smith.
00:02:28Well, Smith back in the team today and really showed his worth there.
00:02:34What a great servant to Bournemouth he's been for a long, long time now.
00:02:40This is Alex Jiménez playing further forward today.
00:02:44Smith.
00:02:47Back into Hill. Bournemouth settled into the match a little bit more.
00:02:52Sinezi.
00:02:53Pressure on Van Dijk.
00:02:55Here's a chance!
00:02:56Evan Nielsen.
00:02:59Bournemouth take the lead.
00:03:00Evan Nielsen scores for the third home match in a row.
00:03:05Well, Alisson hasn't really had anything to do, to be honest, in the opening quarter of this match.
00:03:11It was superbly kept in.
00:03:13And as Evan Nielsen just pounced, it was great work here by Alex Scott.
00:03:17Just off the toe there of Van Dijk.
00:03:19Scott, I think, just keeps the ball in play.
00:03:22And Joe Gomez collides with his own goalkeeper.
00:03:26Bournemouth 1, Liverpool 0.
00:03:30Joe Gomez, he's going to have to go to the side of the pitch.
00:03:33He doesn't look terribly comfortable, but the referee's saying,
00:03:36well, you've had treatment on the pitch, so you need to wander off before you can come back on.
00:03:42Liverpool waiting to make a change at the next opportunity.
00:03:45Now it's with James Hill.
00:03:47It's a decent looking ball, and a chance, and a second goal!
00:03:54Beautifully taken by Alex Jiménez!
00:03:57All the while, Liverpool were playing with ten.
00:04:02They're now down by two.
00:04:04Was there an offside there?
00:04:06That might be the only call.
00:04:08They'll definitely be looking at it.
00:04:10Jiménez racing in, took the chance well.
00:04:132-0 Bournemouth for now.
00:04:16It is going to be checked, of course, as he swept it past Alisson into the back of the net.
00:04:24The goal is given.
00:04:25It's 2-0 to Bournemouth.
00:04:27That's how close it was.
00:04:30And it's turning into a decidedly tricky evening for Liverpool.
00:04:37Well, it's ten years since Liverpool last won a match,
00:04:40coming from two goals down.
00:04:42And that was against Norwich City.
00:04:45Here's Soboslai, scored just before the break in Marseille during the week.
00:04:51Gakpo trying to pick out Salah, and he finds it.
00:04:54And the connection not crisp enough on the greasy ball to trouble Petrovic.
00:05:02Liverpool at least finishing the first half on the front foot.
00:05:07Salah challenged by Cinesi, and it will be a corner.
00:05:12Sixth corner Liverpool have had in the first half.
00:05:18Salah's delivery is just too long, but they will get another corner.
00:05:24Coming off James Hill.
00:05:33Silver slice sends it over!
00:05:34Liverpool are right back in the game, thanks to their captain.
00:05:38Virgil van Dijk on the stroke of half-time.
00:05:41Bournemouth's lead is chopped in half.
00:05:44And though they are behind, Liverpool will be feeling a whole lot better about themselves and their chances today now.
00:05:53Liverpool making a change at the start of the second half.
00:05:57Andy Robertson coming on, the subject of much media speculation about a possible move to Tottenham over the last 24 hours.
00:06:04But here he is, and he's on for Milos Kerkhez.
00:06:10This is Endo sliding it through, looking for Cody Gakpo.
00:06:12Petrovic moving swiftly and smartly off his line together.
00:06:21Soboslai, Curtis Jones is in space and now in possession, looking to try and tee up Robertson.
00:06:27And it's put behind, but not out of play, and Gomorrah has it now.
00:06:36That'll be a free kick, conceded by Jimenez.
00:06:41Just had his arms all around the Liverpool player.
00:06:46Well, the referee just had to give a free kick there.
00:06:50Soboslai is quite handy for this sort of situation, we've seen that recently.
00:06:55It's back to Dominic. Soboslai, and it's brilliantly taken!
00:07:00From two down, Liverpool a level.
00:07:03Straight into the Bournemouth net like a missile.
00:07:06Well, he put Liverpool ahead in the Champions League on Wednesday, and he's drawn them level here.
00:07:12Dominic Soboslai.
00:07:17With a lovely finish.
00:07:20And Bournemouth's lead has completely evaporated.
00:07:26As Liverpool is about to say go in search of a winner, but it's Bournemouth who come roaring back.
00:07:32And the shot from Christie brings the best out of Alisson.
00:07:38What a response that was from the home side.
00:07:41Rip-roaring match between these two.
00:07:44And we're far from done.
00:07:48Trooper.
00:07:50It's like a basketball game now, going from one end of the field to the other.
00:07:52And now it's Ryan Christie, surging forward for Bournemouth.
00:07:56Christie feeding it through.
00:07:57Evan Nielsen!
00:07:58Oh!
00:07:59Just wide!
00:08:02Bournemouth so, so close to regaining the lead.
00:08:07And just to add into the mix, the reins decided to fall effort more heavily.
00:08:12Here's Ekotike.
00:08:15And Fitz!
00:08:19Well, he was almost as close at that end as Evan Nielsen was at the other.
00:08:26Good save, Petrovic.
00:08:29And that's not been spotted by the officials and Bournemouth have got a goal kick.
00:08:32Liverpool are inching towards a record that they wouldn't really be interested in.
00:08:38But if it stays like this, the first time they've drawn five games in a row in the league since 1980.
00:08:44So, is this the last chance to maybe snatch a win for Bournemouth?
00:08:51And the header goes on, and Ekotike hits it away.
00:09:01It's starting to look as if on a slot, and Liverpool are going to have to settle for, at best, a point again.
00:09:09Hill's throw.
00:09:10Little flicked header on.
00:09:11It's a real bumble!
00:09:12It's on the lane!
00:09:13It's over the lane!
00:09:14Bournemouth have won the game!
00:09:16They don't believe it!
00:09:17It's absolutely extraordinary!
00:09:19Unbelievable!
00:09:22I think it was Adley!
00:09:25It was a scramble in the six-yard box.
00:09:28Adley gets his foot to it.
00:09:30The save was made by Alisson.
00:09:32And then on the follow-up, Amin Adley scores!
00:09:37What a match!
00:09:38What a finish!
00:09:39And surely now, for only the third time in their history, Bournemouth are about to get the better on Liverpool.
00:09:46There's the final whistle!
00:09:49It was the last kick of the game!
00:09:52What a time to score!
00:09:53Liverpool are extremely unhappy about it, but Bournemouth celebrate in the pouring rain!
00:10:01Bournemouth three, Liverpool two!
00:10:04Adley, congratulations!
00:10:06What a big win for your team!
00:10:08What amazing scenes at the end!
00:10:09Yes, massive win for us!
00:10:11Massive win, because we were in a delicate situation, especially numbers-wise.
00:10:17We've gone last week with very few players, especially offensive players, and we are finding ways to get points.
00:10:23And the reward has come at the very, very end.
00:10:27It's fair to say that in the last ten minutes it was more open, and I think it's also fair to say that I could see my players,
00:10:32which I mainly have to use the same one constantly, were tired in the end, and that led to a few moments for them.
00:10:39If you lose again in extra time after coming back after 2-0, being 2-0 down, then it can be a cruel game for us.
00:10:48Congratulations! What an incredible finish to the game!
00:10:51Yeah, I think we play football for moments like this.
00:10:55The people are coming for this, and to see all the happiness in everybody, the members of the staff,
00:11:00all the people who are working for the club and the fans.
00:11:02Hopefully it can be a switch of the season, and it's very nice today to take the three points at the last minute like this.
00:11:09It was a good and much-needed win for Bournemouth, but you think Liverpool gave them a helping hand, don't you?
00:11:15Yeah, I do. Liverpool have gone soft, and certainly today we're far too easy to play against, particularly defensively.
00:11:21I mean, the first goal, there are so many things wrong with it. It's incredible.
00:11:26Yes, we'll have a pop it Van Dijk for his two errors here.
00:11:29He should clear it, there's no doubt about that, and then he should block it after his error, and he doesn't.
00:11:35And then every problem Liverpool had stems from this situation.
00:11:38Yet, we've had a pop it Van Dijk, and rightly so, but just watch the two full-backs,
00:11:42Kerkes and Frimpong, and Gomez in the middle here.
00:11:46I mean, I don't know what Frimpong's thinking, where he's going.
00:11:49Smell the danger, sense the danger, look at Kerkes.
00:11:53Gomez should be ten yards further forward looking at Evan Nielsen now, that ball's gone over.
00:11:58Frimpong should be in there against Kruppi, and he's not.
00:12:01And when the ball comes in, just have a look where your two full-backs are.
00:12:04So if Gomez misses that, obviously he doesn't, then Frimpong should be in there.
00:12:09And then all of a sudden, they don't get the sub on, and everything stems from their ash.
00:12:14Yeah, and we can see Endo waiting to come on, and it actually takes about six minutes,
00:12:18and Liverpool had possession, they didn't put the ball out.
00:12:20And as we roll this on now, it leads to the problem that they've got.
00:12:26Again, they're not sensing danger.
00:12:29Gravenberg is filling in at centre-back.
00:12:31They should all slide over again.
00:12:33Van Dijk should be over a little bit more, five yards over.
00:12:36They should all tighten up, but they don't.
00:12:38Again, and then if you look at Kerkes, it's basic full-back errors.
00:12:42His body shape is all wrong.
00:12:43He should be able to see the ball and the player.
00:12:45He doesn't. Jimenez makes a good run off him and scores.
00:12:49This is at the end. They're actually set up well.
00:12:52They've got the advantage in numbers.
00:12:54We've highlighted Van Dijk.
00:12:56I think he's a little bit naive to try and go and win that in that position.
00:12:59He should hold his ground and win the ball.
00:13:02But he goes to try and win it on the flight.
00:13:04Actually, he gets caught up with Curtis Jones' leg.
00:13:08So there's no foul? No.
00:13:10And you see there, again, the desire in the box.
00:13:13Adley is lively. He wants the goal.
00:13:16As Bournemouth have been...
00:13:18We have to give a lot of credit to Bournemouth for their performance
00:13:20because they showed desire in both boxes.
00:13:24Well, we do here, don't we?
00:13:25I mean, Arna Slott talks about players being tired,
00:13:27having played in the Champions League during the week.
00:13:30But Bournemouth have been on a really iffy run.
00:13:34And yet, Andoni Areola has had to put up with an awful lot of different things,
00:13:38whether it's players going like Semenyo, whether it's injuries.
00:13:41Bournemouth deserve huge credit here.
00:13:43Absolutely. I thought their desire to win that game,
00:13:46particularly after being...
00:13:47When they're 2-0 up, when Liverpool get back into the game,
00:13:50you think, oh, here we go.
00:13:51But the way they've found a way somehow to find a way.
00:13:54And you mentioned it.
00:13:55We've spoken about at the beginning of the season, the players.
00:13:57But then the injuries they have, they lose.
00:13:59And then they lose their best player Semenyo a couple of weeks ago.
00:14:02And then to deal with that and then get the win
00:14:04and then be three points off eighth, I think they are now,
00:14:07which he's doing a wonderful job down there, he really is.
00:14:10I think it's so refreshing to...
00:14:12You know, they lose their best players, they get injuries,
00:14:15but there's no moaning, however, that comes out of Bournemouth.
00:14:17It's just they buy well, they promote players within their squad,
00:14:21put them in the team, they do well.
00:14:22And I like the way it's refreshing that they just get on with it
00:14:25and get the job done.
00:14:26Yeah.
00:14:27If Liverpool aren't clicking defensively,
00:14:29they're not clicking further forward either, then.
00:14:32I just wonder where the killer instinct's gone.
00:14:34The two goals they've got today were set pieces, fine,
00:14:36but they got into some decent positions as well.
00:14:38And I'm thinking, OK, put the ball in the back and left.
00:14:41Where's your shot? Salah here.
00:14:42How many times have you seen him take a touch with the left foot
00:14:45and bend it?
00:14:46Look at the space he's got.
00:14:47Why on earth is he choosing to try and pass this?
00:14:50I'm amazed he's not having a poppet goal here.
00:14:53It's actually a really poor pass anyway, but he should be out of his foot
00:14:57and away and in that far corner.
00:14:59They work it really well.
00:15:01Again, Gakpo gets into a good position,
00:15:03and eventually when he passes it, it's a nothing pass.
00:15:06You can see he can drive forward, he's got to his right, to his left,
00:15:09and then he chooses that.
00:15:11That's the worst option of the lot, I think, and it turns into nothing.
00:15:14Lovely ball from Slobozla out to the right side.
00:15:17This time it's Wurt.
00:15:19Why is he not having a shot as well?
00:15:20Look, he works it really well onto the left foot.
00:15:22Bend it into the corner.
00:15:24He chooses the worst option again, and it's a terrible pass.
00:15:27Nothing comes from it.
00:15:29Second half was basically no different.
00:15:31Robertson come on at half-time.
00:15:33That's a good position, and it should be a better ball,
00:15:35and he's got to find a better ball.
00:15:37You can't hit the front man there.
00:15:39You've got to get that ball across in the dink.
00:15:42Again, Wurt's worked himself into a good position.
00:15:45Again, he chooses not to shoot.
00:15:46Why?
00:15:47You're not going to score goals.
00:15:49So the two goals they get were front-set pieces,
00:15:51but, as I said, they get into good positions,
00:15:53but they were so wasteful as well,
00:15:55and that's why I say they've gone soft.
00:15:58And those results, I know they're draws,
00:16:00but you're not beating Leeds, you're not beating Fulham,
00:16:03you're not beating Burnley.
00:16:04The Arsenal performance was a good one,
00:16:06but that tells you there's big problems at Anfield.
00:16:08I know he's saying he's had to kind of select the same players
00:16:12that he's selected in the Champions League, give or take.
00:16:15In each unit, there doesn't appear to be a settled combination,
00:16:19does it?
00:16:20No, there doesn't.
00:16:21I don't think he knows what's his best team,
00:16:25but what's more worrying is we're praising Bournemouth
00:16:29for the fact that they can interchange players,
00:16:31and they all seem to be on the same page.
00:16:33Between the units, it seems like they're so disjointed,
00:16:36Liverpool, they've got problems at both ends of the pitch,
00:16:39and they're lacking that desire and ruthlessness in front of goal
00:16:42and to defend the goal.
00:16:43Yeah.
00:16:44Right, last weekend's victory over Spurs was West Ham's first win
00:16:47in 11 in the league, and they welcomed Sunderland
00:16:50to the London Stadium.
00:16:51Guy Mowbray, watch this one.
00:16:53After last weekend's win, Nuno Espirito Santo said simply,
00:16:58we believe another West Ham victory today,
00:17:01a bit more momentum gathered, and quite a few more might join him.
00:17:05He's named the same line-up that started at Spurs,
00:17:07with Crescensio Somerville having the chance to score
00:17:10for a third game in a row.
00:17:11It's something he's done before.
00:17:13As a Leeds player, he scored in four successive games in 2022.
00:17:17For Sunderland, no Granit Xhaka, ruled out by an ankle injury,
00:17:20although the fact he's travelled down and looked in decent nick
00:17:23disembarking the coach suggests it's not too serious
00:17:26and says a lot about his role at the club.
00:17:28Eliza Mayenda comes in to start in a very forward-looking team,
00:17:32and Sunderland also have a player bidding to score
00:17:35in a third match on the trot, Enzo Lefe.
00:17:38It's at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland have been so successful
00:17:45all season long, and it started on the opening day,
00:17:48a 3-0 win against then-Graham Potter's West Ham,
00:17:51which rather set the tone for what's happened to both sides
00:17:55in the months that have followed.
00:17:59He's gone after a throw-in down by the corner flag.
00:18:02Two of those three Sunderland goals on day one were headers,
00:18:05and West Ham have conceded ten further headed goals this season.
00:18:10They might have one to keep out in a moment.
00:18:13Machieli's long throws are becoming the stuff of legend.
00:18:20He's not headed far away, and it needed saving by Areola.
00:18:23Siddiqui really got a hold of that.
00:18:25Brilliant effort, watching it all the way,
00:18:28and just cutting across the ball.
00:18:30The usual maxed-out travelling support from Sunderland.
00:18:37Never a spare ticket wherever they go.
00:18:39Speaking from personal experience, they do enjoy a trip to London.
00:18:43Bowen.
00:18:45Hume gets it up and a little way out.
00:18:52Not far.
00:18:54Wan-Bissaka.
00:18:55Bowen.
00:18:57Running at Ranildo, and again getting half a yard to deliver the courts.
00:19:01And it's thundered in by Somerville!
00:19:04It is three in a row for West Ham's number seven.
00:19:08Twice in less than a minute, Gerard Bowen allowed space from which to cross.
00:19:16And Crescensio Somerville is having quite some time in this month of January.
00:19:22It was so easy for Gerard Bowen, wasn't it?
00:19:25Ranildo not close, and then even further away by the time the cross was put in.
00:19:30Super leap two from Somerville.
00:19:32Mukiele allowing him a free jump.
00:19:36And Nuno celebrates his team going 1-0 up in the 14th minute.
00:19:42Time to come out with the statistic.
00:19:45Sunderland have won 16 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season.
00:19:51Only Aston Villa more.
00:19:53Bowen.
00:19:55Back to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
00:19:58Pablo and Castellanos waiting for the ball.
00:20:03Here's Pablo.
00:20:10Mateus Fernandes.
00:20:14Somerville.
00:20:18Penalty West Ham.
00:20:19Referee's seen a trip.
00:20:21Ole Skarles upended.
00:20:23He was already committed to the tackle.
00:20:26Couldn't get out of it.
00:20:27It's a pretty easy one to give.
00:20:30No, Lucas Paquitar, who's scored both of their penalties this season.
00:20:33Gerard Bowen will take over.
00:20:37And he's tucked that nicely into the corner.
00:20:40West Ham lead 2-0.
00:20:44Confidence is the key.
00:20:47And West Ham have got plenty of it.
00:20:49Gerard Bowen's penalty is worth another look.
00:20:53That standing foot gave way a bit.
00:20:56And he was very lucky not to double hit this.
00:20:59The side just looked flat today.
00:21:03Probably too easy a thing to say that it's due to Granit Xhaka not being in there in the middle.
00:21:09But it has to be a massive factor.
00:21:13Castajanos on the move.
00:21:16Might have gone a bit too soon.
00:21:17But it doesn't matter now.
00:21:18As the ball went out left to Somerville.
00:21:20Here's Castajanos.
00:21:23Locked by Ballard.
00:21:24Oh, what a good try.
00:21:26What a fantastic goal from Mateus Fernandes.
00:21:33That's an absolute beauty.
00:21:36And for West Ham United, it's turning into a beautiful day.
00:21:40Started with the run from Tati Castajanos.
00:21:46And I don't think it was offside anyway.
00:21:48Not that it matters.
00:21:49Reinildo, the left back, was playing him on.
00:21:52It went out to Somerville anyway.
00:21:55Ballard blocks the first attempt.
00:21:58Nobody saw the need to even try and block Mateus Fernandes from that far out.
00:22:03They might think again next time.
00:22:04He has a look.
00:22:06He sets himself.
00:22:08And then does that.
00:22:10You won't see many better shots than that this weekend.
00:22:13You won't see many better than that this month.
00:22:16Let's shorten it.
00:22:18You won't see many better than that.
00:22:23Ironically, the only clean sheet that West Ham have kept all season
00:22:27was in a 3-0 win at Nuno's Forest team at the end of August.
00:22:32Diarra.
00:22:39Inviting Michieli to get onto it.
00:22:40He's done that.
00:22:41Good ball!
00:22:43And Sunderland do have a way back in.
00:22:45Brobby's headed home.
00:22:47Maybe, just maybe.
00:22:49They've got 25 minutes and more remaining.
00:22:52Habib Diarra made that happen.
00:22:55Too much time on the ball, maybe.
00:22:57And then it's a good ball because he knows about the pace that Nordi Mukieli has.
00:23:03He races onto it.
00:23:05Clips it into the box.
00:23:06Brobby's in the right place.
00:23:08West Ham 3, Sunderland 1.
00:23:11West Ham still have a two-goal cushion.
00:23:14There's no need for the nerves to start jangling just yet.
00:23:17Although...
00:23:18You might not know it by Nuno's demeanour.
00:23:22So, you've heads out as far as Ballard.
00:23:270-9.
00:23:29Oh!
00:23:30Oh, no!
00:23:31Nearly scored!
00:23:32Touched under the frame of the goal by Areola, who was caught out by that.
00:23:38Gloves.
00:23:39Bar.
00:23:40Gloves.
00:23:41A huge sigh of West Ham relief.
00:23:43That would have made the finish very interesting.
00:23:48A little bit of interaction between Granit Xhaka and some of the West Ham supports sitting behind him.
00:23:54It was after Nordi Mukieli was substituted and whatever was said in his direction, whatever jeers there were,
00:24:00they weren't taken well by Sunderland's non-playing staff.
00:24:05Le Fay loses the ball to Wilson.
00:24:11Mitesh Fernandes.
00:24:13Looking for Bowen.
00:24:15Well, how did he get that effort away?
00:24:17A speedy Bowen nipping in and...
00:24:20Not all that far away from making it four and absolutely safe.
00:24:25Well, it was deflected off Ballard, it's going to be a corner.
00:24:27In from Bowen, helped to cross, Mavropanos got a touch.
00:24:35That's Mateus Fernandes!
00:24:38Up goes Wilson!
00:24:40Roos has lost it, did that cross the line?
00:24:47The referee gives...
00:24:51A free kick, I thought he had.
00:24:52There were some West Ham fans just thinking with that point towards the halfway line, he was giving the goal.
00:24:58Wasn't far away from crossing the line, but I think Roos has got his hands just far enough in front of himself.
00:25:04What about the shot from Mateus Fernandes?
00:25:07West Ham win back-to-back Premier League games.
00:25:14And this evening they will sit just two points shy of the safety mark.
00:25:20Nuno's 52nd birthday tomorrow promises to be a happy one.
00:25:24First of all, your goal. Have you ever scored a better one?
00:25:28No, never. I never scored out of the box, so it was my first goal out of the box.
00:25:32But I'm very happy for the win. I think it was the most important for us.
00:25:37What's the story today from your point of view?
00:25:40They were better than us. It's easy.
00:25:43I think, yeah, they showed good quality.
00:25:47They started better, more aggressiveness, more composed of the ball as well.
00:25:54I think the reaction during the second half was a bit better, but they were simply better than us.
00:25:59We have to accept it.
00:26:00I think we play good. I'm always positive that things can improve, but clearly I think the connection, the combinations, the knowledge of each other, of the players, are starting to happen.
00:26:14Things that we try in the training ground are starting to reflect in the pitch, and that for me is a joy.
00:26:18He says it's a joy.
00:26:21There have been so many times this season where you've wondered where their energy and positivity is, and they had it today with their midfielder, Matheus Fernandes.
00:26:31Yeah, I thought he was excellent today. In possession, he showed his quality. Out of possession is exactly what you just described. A bit more energy that they needed, a bit more tenacity.
00:26:41We see him. He's only 21 years old. He was so impressive. You see him tracking as an ex-centre-back. It's so nice when your midfielder helps you out in situations like that.
00:26:51Here he drops in between the centre-backs. You see his range of passing. From this angle, it looks like it might be a bad ball, but it's absolutely perfect for some of us who were excellent on the day as well to run on to.
00:27:03We just keep an eye on him as we track him. Takes a touch, and then that's some hit. The goalkeeper managed to get a hand on it, but can't keep it out.
00:27:12Here you see he scans left shoulder, right shoulder, left again. He knows exactly what's around him. First time around the corner playing forward, that's always a sign of a good centre midfield player.
00:27:21He knows his surroundings and where to play. Here again, he nearly tops it off with this one.
00:27:27Unbelievable strike that somehow hits a crossbar and stays out, but you can see, you know, now that Paqueta's not there, maybe getting in his way a little bit.
00:27:38I can't continue with this. It's my favourite moment of today, that. Those two trying to headbutt each other and completely missing the ball here at the bar.
00:27:46Sorry, back to your Paqueta point, as I just continue to giggle.
00:27:49What about Paqueta in the team? I think it gives Fernandes a chance to go and own that midfield, which he dominated today.
00:27:54And you can see by the stats that we've got on the screen today, that's really impressive, you know, ranks first in his team for all of those things.
00:28:02He's doing more than you'd expect a 21-year-old midfielder to do.
00:28:05Even you couldn't ask much more of him given those stats.
00:28:08Brilliant. Great performance. He was brilliant last weekend as well.
00:28:11As far as Sunderland, like I said, that was a very un-Sunderland-like performance from what we've seen this season.
00:28:16Yeah, they got outfought in the first half.
00:28:20It hasn't happened to them too many times, if at all, this season, but they were lazy.
00:28:25They didn't seem interested at all. You can see there from a throw-in, there's no desire to go and close any West Ham players down with any urgency, with any pace.
00:28:35And they just allowed West Ham to play the game at the pace that they wanted to and control it how they wanted to in that first half.
00:28:43And they got punished. 1v1, Bowen and Ranildo, and that was a warning.
00:28:50And then all of a sudden they don't clear it and it comes back out to him again and he's left 1v1.
00:28:55No cover, no backing up. This time they get punished.
00:28:59Great play. Great wing play.
00:29:00And then the quality to lift it over, excuse me, and then the smallest player on the park somehow jumps above the centre-halves and gets a great header.
00:29:09But again, look, it's not, alright, it's just jogging.
00:29:13There's nothing, there's no closing down with an intensity or with a pressure that you need to do wherever you're going to play football.
00:29:20They're all jogging, they don't shut off again and again, same thing happens.
00:29:241v1 and he goes past and Bowen again and he gets the free kick.
00:29:29Fernandes, who Ash has already mentioned, he controlled it basically.
00:29:34He got the ball and he was absolutely sensational.
00:29:38Now, just look where he comes from, from that pass there and then just follow him as we do.
00:29:44And Le Fay, he's not aware of where he is at all.
00:29:48And the lack of effort to close him down is incredible.
00:29:52Just have a look at it from another angle there.
00:29:55I know they're missing their best player in Granite Jacket and that showed today because he, I'm sure, wouldn't have allowed that performance.
00:30:02Because everything good about Sunderland has come from him and everything that the aggression has come from him and that just wasn't there in that first half today.
00:30:11And when you're 3-0 down, you're not coming back, not with that performance.
00:30:15Yeah, and you can see from the jewels that they won how often they were compared to other performances.
00:30:21It's amazing, isn't it, how quickly things can change really.
00:30:25And they've had a couple of good wins West Ham, they've brought a couple of players in, they're looking to do some more work in the transfer window.
00:30:33And all of a sudden you just wonder.
00:30:35Yeah, absolutely.
00:30:37What they've done is they've given themselves a chance, they've given a bit of hope back to the fan base.
00:30:41Because at one point, I think we were all sitting there saying, I think they're going to get relegated, they're not showing any signs of improvement.
00:30:46So they've brought, as you say, brought a couple of players in.
00:30:48I think the fact that now you're getting that kind of performance from Fernandes might just be the difference with them staying up.
00:30:55But yeah, now they're in touching distance of Nottingham Forest and the picture changes.
00:31:00They went to Wolves, didn't they?
00:31:01And they were hopeless.
00:31:02Yeah, you hammered them.
00:31:03They were terrible.
00:31:04And then last weekend they were much better at Tottenham.
00:31:06And today they've shown great energy and desire again.
00:31:09So, giving themselves a chance.
00:31:11Right, despite a midweek win against Dortmund in the Champions League,
00:31:14pressure remains on Tottenham's Thomas Frank.
00:31:17They took on a Burnley side, they haven't won in the league since October.
00:31:20Steve Bower was at Turf Moor.
00:31:23Can a short-term Spurs lift be a foundation for anything further?
00:31:28Burnley have drawn at least four of their last six Premier League games
00:31:32and they're unchanged from the last one at Anfield.
00:31:34And that means that goal scorer Marcus Edwards starts again against his first ever club.
00:31:40Thomas Frank is delighted to be able to welcome back Van der Ven and Connor Gallagher from the midweek victory.
00:31:46And also, he recalls Yves Basuma, who starts a Spurs game for the first time since the Europa League final.
00:31:54The sides have accumulated 18 of their 27 points away from North London.
00:32:01And the Arsenal can better that record on the road.
00:32:04Now Oduban, he's got Solanke and Simons with him, the former Burnley player goes for goal!
00:32:19And the fingertips of Martin Dubravka denied him.
00:32:23They've got the most goals from corners in the Premier League, can they ask a question from this one?
00:32:32Strong punch from Dubravka, and an excellent save, and Gallagher's follow-up, and he's denied as well.
00:32:38Well, Martin Dubravka in fine form there.
00:32:44It's another Tottenham corner.
00:32:53This one's gone short.
00:32:56In from Spence, off the head of Esteve.
00:32:59Back from Romero.
00:33:01Van der Ven!
00:33:03They've beaten Dubravka that time.
00:33:08And it's Miki van der Ven!
00:33:13With his seventh goal this season, to give Spurs the lead.
00:33:19Caught it so sweetly.
00:33:22On that occasion, Dubravka didn't move.
00:33:26This side are the joint lowest scorers at home in the Premier League, with just ten goals.
00:33:35Long from Vicario.
00:33:38Well held up by Solanke.
00:33:41Simons.
00:33:43Oduban!
00:33:45Straight at Dubravka.
00:33:48But that all came from the role of Dominic Solanke.
00:33:52What a miss he's been this season.
00:33:55It's going to go in this time from Kyle Walker.
00:34:02It's brilliant, and it's 1-1.
00:34:04Axel Twanzebi's very first Premier League goal has equalised for Burnley.
00:34:15It's all about the delivery from Kyle Walker.
00:34:20And then the timed run.
00:34:22And as he was falling down, he did well to finish that Twanzebi.
00:34:27Heavy touch there from Humphreys.
00:34:29Gallagher set Jed Spence away with an excellent ball.
00:34:42Simons in the centre.
00:34:44Overhit by Jed Spence, kept in by a doggy.
00:34:50Still potentially alive for Spurs.
00:34:52Simons.
00:34:53Solanke!
00:34:55Dubravka's had it again in the Burnley goal.
00:34:59A flick from Solanke, excellent reflexes.
00:35:05Spence.
00:35:12Spence.
00:35:14Oduber.
00:35:17Spence has continued his run.
00:35:19And he's got round Esteve, you had to be careful there.
00:35:22There certainly wasn't enough contact for Spence to go down in the manner in which he did.
00:35:29And at the other end, Breuer plays on, and he's got goalside of Danzo.
00:35:33And it's Armando Breuer, and Vicario does really well.
00:35:40Manages to keep out just, it almost went under and in between the legs.
00:35:46And Pace, the Burnley chairman keeping warm.
00:35:56The side start of the day eight points away from safety.
00:36:02Laurent.
00:36:05Oh, Hosta let it go to Jadon Anthony.
00:36:15Oh, he's done van der Verne.
00:36:17Foster.
00:36:18And second time.
00:36:20Lyle Foster for Burnley.
00:36:31Who haven't won in 13 long Premier League games.
00:36:36And they lead here against Tottenham.
00:36:40He poked the first effort against Vicario.
00:36:45And then the second one.
00:36:47Tottenham just couldn't keep it out.
00:36:51And that heat on Spurs and Thomas Frank is turned up again.
00:36:58Gallagher.
00:37:05Have Spurs anything in their locker?
00:37:08Spence trying to retrieve that, he has.
00:37:09A bit more determination.
00:37:10Good cross as well.
00:37:11Oh, and Dubravka, who is single-handedly today.
00:37:27Denied Tottenham Hotspur.
00:37:30And that's the latest in his list of saves.
00:37:35It was Matthias Tell on the stretch.
00:37:37That was heading in.
00:37:39Oh, this will be two wins in 14 Premier League games if it stays this way.
00:37:51Odober is round Lucas Pires.
00:37:53Now it's all about the delivery here.
00:37:55Odober.
00:37:56Xavi Simons!
00:37:59Oh, you just wonder if it's going to be that kind of day for Spurs.
00:38:06With Dubravka's performance.
00:38:09And then that moment as well.
00:38:12What an opportunity that was.
00:38:23Matthias Tell once more.
00:38:25Spence.
00:38:28Odober's delivery.
00:38:29Oh, what a finish!
00:38:33Christian Romero!
00:38:37The captain comes forward.
00:38:42And levels it for Spurs.
00:38:46It was a towering header that flew into the top corner.
00:38:51Even Dubravka, in the form he's been in today, wasn't stopping that.
00:39:02And it goes towards Foster and Esteve.
00:39:05And it's dropped to Humphreys.
00:39:08And there is no more time.
00:39:10And it finishes 2-2.
00:39:12It's not the win that Thomas Frank wanted to build on the Champions League victory.
00:39:18But it isn't the defeat it was looking like at 2-1 down.
00:39:22Courtesy of the captain, Christian Romero.
00:39:27And it's finished all square.
00:39:29Burnley 2.
00:39:30Spurs 2.
00:39:32I think it's very important to focus on how we started the game.
00:39:36And the first half I think is really good.
00:39:38We came here.
00:39:39Boom!
00:39:40On top of it.
00:39:41Creating chances.
00:39:42Getting up 1-0.
00:39:43Could have scored a second one.
00:39:44Didn't.
00:39:45And then it's very important to focus on how strongly we ended.
00:39:49With the character.
00:39:50And keep fighting to the end.
00:39:52That's good.
00:39:53And then we need to improve the bid in the middle.
00:39:55A little bit disappointed today, Steve.
00:39:57No doubt.
00:39:58Because you're that close really.
00:39:59And in the last dying stages you can see the goal to get the draw.
00:40:03But overall really pleased with my team.
00:40:06I thought we showed an incredible spirit today.
00:40:09We're in and around it.
00:40:10And human nature is at these moments.
00:40:12You can become very nervous.
00:40:14Very edgy.
00:40:15Of course I understand.
00:40:16We need to try and get some wins here.
00:40:18For sure.
00:40:19I'm not hiding from that fact.
00:40:20And we were close today.
00:40:21But for sure there's been some real improvement.
00:40:24And we need to continue with that.
00:40:25Find margins.
00:40:26You play against top sides.
00:40:27I think could have gone either way.
00:40:30And we had momentum at one point.
00:40:31But like you say, they got it back at the end.
00:40:35Yeah.
00:40:36We just need to focus on the next one.
00:40:38And is it a time for calm heads?
00:40:40Yeah, I think so.
00:40:42I think that's the only way it can be.
00:40:44Calm heads.
00:40:45Carry on.
00:40:46Keep doing what we think is the right thing.
00:40:47We do more than enough to win the game.
00:40:49So we just need to defend better in the two situations.
00:40:51And of course score goal more there.
00:40:54Could have done the difference when we were up 1-0.
00:40:56Well I've done many shows where the start has been good
00:40:59and the end has been good.
00:41:00The bit in the middle has been a bit questionable.
00:41:02But not tonight.
00:41:03Look, when you look at Spurs, for a lot of teams
00:41:08it would be a real positive to have goal scoring defenders,
00:41:11wouldn't it?
00:41:12But if not many others in that team are contributing as well.
00:41:16So where are the positives and where are the negatives for them?
00:41:19Well listen, it's such a strange situation,
00:41:21especially with these two players that we're showing you in the graphic.
00:41:24Because they are scoring goals, which we're going to show you now.
00:41:28And they're really clever goals.
00:41:30Good goals.
00:41:31If you watch Van de Ven's movement, he just pulls out
00:41:33and he's alive for any kind of scraps as it drops down.
00:41:35That's a really good finish in the bottom corner.
00:41:37And then Romero didn't have a good day today at all, but produces that.
00:41:43That is some header.
00:41:45That is, when we see it from this angle, that is great goal to score.
00:41:49Then on the flip side of it, you want your defenders to defend
00:41:52and take pride in that.
00:41:54And we've highlighted Romero there.
00:41:56As the ball gets turned over, he's really lucky that it's offside
00:41:59because he probably gives a penalty away.
00:42:01And you can just see that he's not really switched on.
00:42:03Here's another example of this.
00:42:05He just takes his eye off the ball.
00:42:07And now you look at his body language and you're worrying
00:42:09his head's down straight away.
00:42:10He's your captain.
00:42:11He sets the tone.
00:42:13From this position here, if we look at the back line now,
00:42:17that should all be squeezed up, all in a straight line.
00:42:20Romero, Van der Ven should be about five yards back.
00:42:24And then the rest of the defensive line can take a straight line off them.
00:42:29They're not.
00:42:30It's all higgledy-piggledy.
00:42:32Two-ends AB gets in there.
00:42:33Three.
00:42:34You're wondering how is he free in the six-yard box.
00:42:36Again, we look at the shape.
00:42:37Romero's deeper than Danso.
00:42:39Van der Ven's too high also in this back three situation.
00:42:43But because he's got the pace, he gets back on that occasion.
00:42:45Again, it's a similar position here.
00:42:48Danso's calling for offside.
00:42:50He can't be because he's the one that's closest to the ball.
00:42:52Romero, if it wasn't Broja there, if it was another striker
00:42:56that had a bit more confidence in his finish,
00:42:58that had been a goal as well.
00:43:00This is a back two.
00:43:01I don't know what's going.
00:43:03What is that?
00:43:04They're in a diamond now.
00:43:05I don't know what for.
00:43:06But as you just look, if we keep an eye on that back three,
00:43:10they are just pushed and pulled all over the place.
00:43:12Romero, again, eager to go and win it.
00:43:14Doesn't win it.
00:43:15Van der Ven, who I personally think is a really good defender.
00:43:18Terrible individual defender there.
00:43:20Danso as well.
00:43:21It's like Comedy Central at the back foot for Tottenham Hotspurs,
00:43:25but they score goals, so it's really bizarre.
00:43:27But in my opinion, I think the Tottenham fan base
00:43:30would rather their defenders defend properly and get a clean sheet.
00:43:33Just quickly on that, because obviously this is where you played.
00:43:35Is that individuals?
00:43:37Is that training?
00:43:38Yeah.
00:43:39Is it both?
00:43:40I think it's a little bit of both, but I think it's more from training the shape.
00:43:45It looked to me like they didn't know what there was being asked of them.
00:43:48They didn't know their individual role today in that back three.
00:43:51Spurs in general?
00:43:53Yeah, and miles off it.
00:43:56Not good enough.
00:43:57Five without a win in the Premier League.
00:43:59Two wins in 14.
00:44:01And when you look at their coming fixtures,
00:44:04Frankfurt on Wednesday in the Champions League,
00:44:06which they are doing well in,
00:44:08but then you look at the Premier League games,
00:44:11City, United, Newcastle and Arsenal,
00:44:13that is a really, really tough run.
00:44:15Well, it is, isn't it?
00:44:16Because you already feel that he's on,
00:44:19we've talked about this many times,
00:44:20that he's on this game-by-game basis.
00:44:22A good result, and all of a sudden that might save him.
00:44:25That's what you feel.
00:44:26You feel as if it's your one win away from a disaster,
00:44:29or a one loss away from a disaster, I should say.
00:44:32But that's a heavy run, that.
00:44:35That's not a good position to be,
00:44:36and of course the fans are making their feelings known also
00:44:40with what they're chanting towards at the end of the game.
00:44:44And I think, I just think Tottenham are suffering
00:44:47from poor recruitment over the years,
00:44:49and truth be known, they're not a good team.
00:44:52Right, we've got four games on Sunday's Match of the Day.
00:44:56And Jamie Ramley.
00:44:59Gabriel Jesus!
00:45:00It's brilliant from the Brazilian.
00:45:03It's a bummer who gets in and scores!
00:45:07Matheta!
00:45:13Here we go, Chelsea.
00:45:14Newcastle have won it!
00:45:17Watkins!
00:45:19The special moment!
00:45:21Iglesiaga, in on goal!
00:45:23And scores!
00:45:25Oh! What a hit from St Glory!!
00:45:27Fiori!
00:45:30Follow all of those games tomorrow on Five Live
00:45:32and BBC Sounds from midday.
00:45:34They've got commentary of Newcastle Villa from 2,
00:45:37Arsenal against Manchester United at 4.30.
00:45:40Also live commentary from the Australian Open Tennis
00:45:43from 7am on Sounds.
00:45:45And highlights of the final round of matches
00:45:48in the league stage of the Champions League
00:45:50on Wednesday night at 10.40 on BBC One.
00:45:55And all those permutations that go with it.
00:45:58Following last weekend's Derby defeat
00:46:00and Tuesday's Champions League loss to Bodo Glimt,
00:46:03Manchester City face bottom-of-the-table Wolves,
00:46:06Connor McNamara at this one.
00:46:09Manchester City have endured two of their most disappointing
00:46:13results of the season in their last two games.
00:46:16Now still bottom-of-the-table Wolves will be wary
00:46:19of facing a backlash today.
00:46:22Pep Guardiola makes six changes from Old Trafford.
00:46:25There is a Manchester City debut for new signing Margehi.
00:46:29Omar Mahmoud starts in the Premier League for the first time since August
00:46:33with Erling Haaland on the bench.
00:46:35Still a long way to go, but Rob Edwards hopes that Wolves
00:46:38have turned a corner in recent weeks.
00:46:40A newfound stability illustrated by just one alteration
00:46:44from the team that started against Newcastle.
00:46:46John Arias returns in place of Orokodare.
00:46:51There was only one goal in it when these sides met here at the Etihad last season.
00:46:55Kevin De Bruyne scoring the deciding goal back in May.
00:46:59That goal that proved to be the Belgian's last for Manchester City.
00:47:03Manchester City get their first corner.
00:47:06on Flandislav Kriki.
00:47:08And Kehi who scored eight Premier League goals during his time as a Crystal Palace player.
00:47:15That's towards Kehi at the back stick.
00:47:17And well held by Josef Saar.
00:47:20A first attempt in Manchester City colours.
00:47:23Manchester City have won the last four meetings.
00:47:27And by an aggregate score of 12 goals to two.
00:47:30Always likely the home side to dominate the position stats in the early stages here.
00:47:36Tanks to do this, taking on Hugo Bueno.
00:47:39Brilliant delivery!
00:47:40And what about that for a finish by Omar Mahmoush!
00:47:46Omar Mahmoush takes six minutes to break the very, very early deadlock here.
00:47:54To make it Manchester City one.
00:47:57Wolverham to Wanderers now.
00:47:58And in the context of recent results and performances,
00:48:01this is a very important start for Pep Guardiola today.
00:48:08Kehi, the top looking for Antos Seveno.
00:48:11He's judged the bounce really well.
00:48:13And Josef Saar standing his ground.
00:48:19Manchester City only had one attempt on target at Old Trafford last weekend.
00:48:23in the derby.
00:48:25They've only had three in this game so far.
00:48:28Semenho.
00:48:30Shows too much of it to Andre.
00:48:32This is Hugo Bueno.
00:48:34Good work from Semenho to win it back for City.
00:48:37Cherki.
00:48:38O'Reilly.
00:48:39Urged to shoot by the City fans.
00:48:41Oh, that's brilliant!
00:48:42Mahmoush to Cherki!
00:48:44So close to two!
00:48:46That is Manchester City at their devastating best.
00:48:51Soudo's Semenho one-backed possession in the final third.
00:48:55Look how quickly City manoeuvred this into a shooting position.
00:48:58Kuchinov, great pace on that.
00:49:08Mahmoush has control, he's got two, he's in!
00:49:10Ah, comes back off the post!
00:49:12Now, Mahmoush is claiming that there was a handball there from a Wolverhampton Wanderers defender.
00:49:18It was Yersin Mosquera.
00:49:21Did he handle it?
00:49:23Vierro will definitely have a good look at this, that arm is outstretched.
00:49:27Darren England's suggesting that Ferreihalla, in his first Premier League match as a referee,
00:49:33comes over to the touchline monitor to have a look at this for himself.
00:49:38After review, the ball hits the arm of the Wolves player,
00:49:41which is in a natural position, so the on-field decision will remain.
00:49:44The restart will be a free kick to Manchester City down.
00:49:47What about that, Ferreihalla, in his first Premier League game as a referee,
00:49:52has decided to stick with his on-field decision.
00:49:57There is a suggestion that officials too readily just agree with the advice they're being given from elsewhere,
00:50:03but a gutsy call from Ferreihalla.
00:50:10Krejci.
00:50:17The Wolves to be admired for trying to play it out, but this is the trouble if they lose it.
00:50:21Cherki.
00:50:22Niko O'Reilly!
00:50:24Put the laces through it, Niko O'Reilly.
00:50:27Looking for only his second Premier League goal of the campaign.
00:50:31That is so close.
00:50:33Cherki.
00:50:45Ronaldo Silva.
00:50:46Now Semenyo.
00:50:47Great touch!
00:50:48Perfect!
00:50:49He set himself up, but he finishes.
00:50:51And that's all about the first touch from Antoine Semenyo as the pass is played to him.
00:51:00Manchester City do get a second goal ahead of half-time.
00:51:04And it's his first in the Premier League in Manchester City colours for new signing Antoine Semenyo.
00:51:14Last time Manchester City lost a Premier League game against a team at the bottom of the table.
00:51:18It was all the way back in 2008.
00:51:21That's nine times City have played the team at the foot of the table.
00:51:25They've not conceded a single goal across those nine games.
00:51:29There's a press from Wolves and it's unsettled City here, Andre.
00:51:35That's what Rob Edwards will want to see a little bit more of.
00:51:38Hugo Bueno.
00:51:39Down goes Mane.
00:51:40It was outside the penalty area.
00:51:42It's a free kick to Wolves within shooting distance.
00:51:49Joe Gomez and Hugo Bueno, the two standing over it.
00:51:54It is Joe Gomez!
00:51:55And it's just over the top of Donnarumma's crossbar.
00:51:58Decent effort.
00:52:02The Wolves have got two home games in a row after this.
00:52:05They host Bournemouth next Saturday.
00:52:07Then Chelsea go to Molineux the following weekend.
00:52:10It's lovely from Doku.
00:52:12Here is Phil Foden.
00:52:13Now Antoine Semenyo.
00:52:15City looking for their third!
00:52:17And it's hit the frame of the goal again!
00:52:19How close was that from Antoine Semenyo?
00:52:23Almost a fourth goal in his first four games from Manchester City.
00:52:32Andre.
00:52:33Just about eluding.
00:52:35Phil Foden.
00:52:36Nice ball by Jorgen Strand Larsson.
00:52:37This is Rodrigo Gomez.
00:52:39And Mateus Nunez did really well to get back and shut down that opportunity.
00:52:45Donnarumma didn't keep it in.
00:52:46It's going to be a corner despite the protests of the Italian.
00:52:51Did all of the ball go over all of the line there?
00:52:55Donnarumma doesn't think so.
00:52:57It's Mane in swing and it flicks onto the roof of the net from Jorgen Mosquera.
00:53:03That's very unfortunate.
00:53:05It actually clips the top of the bar.
00:53:07So close.
00:53:13Mane.
00:53:17Trying to take them all on.
00:53:19Mane almost into the six-yard box.
00:53:21He did really well.
00:53:22Mosquera.
00:53:23Orokatare.
00:53:24Mosquera.
00:53:25Manchester City holding on for their clean sheet here.
00:53:30And that means as much to them as scoring a goal down the other end.
00:53:35This is a big moment to Mark.
00:53:37Mark Gehi's arrival as part of this Manchester City defence.
00:53:44What's it like to be in this Manchester City team?
00:53:46Yeah, there's a lot of details.
00:53:47Like I said, I've got to get up to speed really quickly
00:53:50with how we want to play and positioning
00:53:53and certain things that maybe people can't see that we're talking about on the pitch.
00:53:57But, yeah, it's been really exciting.
00:53:59The players showed really top resilience and character
00:54:02and then a lot of quality in that second half to keep going, keep fighting.
00:54:05And we were really pushing then.
00:54:06We had some moments, especially as the half wore on in the second half,
00:54:09to get back in the game.
00:54:10If we'd have got one, you never know.
00:54:12Omar Mahmoush got his first Premier League start since August
00:54:15and he'll be, I'm sure, very pleased to have scored the goal.
00:54:17Absolutely.
00:54:18People up front, it's a question of numbers.
00:54:19That's his goals, that's his goals, that's his goals.
00:54:21So, I'm happy with Omar with his energy and his movement and we did it.
00:54:26There was a lovely moment at the end.
00:54:27I think yourself and Nico O'Reilly sort of together blocked a shot
00:54:30and you embraced like you just scored a goal between the two of you.
00:54:32You could see what it meant.
00:54:33Absolutely.
00:54:34For us defenders, that's like scoring a goal.
00:54:37And like I said, we need that mentality, we need this intensity within the side
00:54:41and you can see every single person what it meant to them.
00:54:43So, yeah, hopefully we'll keep that going.
00:54:45So, he made his debut.
00:54:47Let's look at the other end of the pitch.
00:54:49Slightly different attacking threat and line-up for City today.
00:54:52What did you make of it?
00:54:53Yeah, I thought it worked well for them, particularly first off.
00:54:56Yeah, they left Haaland out and they left Foden out
00:54:59and played Mahmoush and Semenyo Moors forwards
00:55:04and Cherki in behind in the 10th position.
00:55:06But when that happens, because of those drifting inside,
00:55:09that's where your width has to come from in those two,
00:55:12in those full-back positions.
00:55:15And it worked really, really well for them,
00:55:17particularly with the first goal.
00:55:19There's the five at back that Wolves had
00:55:21and that's what they were trying to do.
00:55:23On this occasion, Gehi made a really steady start to his Man City career.
00:55:27Good ball in behind and it works for them.
00:55:29It forces a good save, Semenyo, from the goalkeeper.
00:55:33And I said about getting the width again,
00:55:37and this is where it works perfectly.
00:55:39I mean, it's great, great play, wide play from Nunez
00:55:42when it eventually comes out to him.
00:55:44Just the way he shifts the ball to get that extra yard
00:55:47and then he just whips it in in the hope
00:55:49and puts it in that dangerous position.
00:55:51Someone's got to get in the end of it.
00:55:53Mahmoush does exactly that and it's a fantastic finish.
00:55:57And they had four shots on target the whole game
00:56:00and they all came within the first half.
00:56:04They work it well again and again.
00:56:06I mean, that touch there with the right foot
00:56:09to then work it onto the left foot.
00:56:11He doesn't have to break his stride at all
00:56:13and then he guides it into the corner, Semenyo.
00:56:16So, it worked for them.
00:56:17As I said, they were certainly much better in the first half
00:56:20than they were in the second half.
00:56:22And that's when they won the game.
00:56:23Farah Halam making his Premier League debut as referee.
00:56:27Yeah.
00:56:28And you were very impressed with him
00:56:29after he got this hospital pass from VAR.
00:56:31Well, yeah.
00:56:32I mean, I actually think he gets the right decision here.
00:56:35I don't agree with Pep.
00:56:36I don't think that is handball.
00:56:37The defender, it's in a natural position, Muscare.
00:56:40How is he meant to balance himself?
00:56:42And he's only a yard away, Mahmoush.
00:56:44And then you've got two experienced referees in VAR
00:56:47who have said to him,
00:56:48we think you've made a clear error there.
00:56:50You need to go and check it on the monitor.
00:56:52And to be fair to him, and I think he gets the right call,
00:56:55he says, no, I don't agree with you guys.
00:56:57Despite his inexperience, despite it being his first game,
00:57:00he's brave enough to say, no, I'm making the different call
00:57:03and I'm sticking with my decision and I'm not moving.
00:57:06And I thought he was really confident
00:57:08and he got that decision right
00:57:09and he got several others right as well.
00:57:11You'd agree?
00:57:12Yeah, absolutely.
00:57:13It's refreshing, isn't it?
00:57:14It is.
00:57:15We are giving the officials praise,
00:57:16but when they deserve it, you know,
00:57:18we're happy to give it them.
00:57:19Right.
00:57:20Next, Fulham,
00:57:21who are looking to move into the top half of the table
00:57:23against the Brighton side,
00:57:25who've never won at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.
00:57:27Commentary comes from Steve Wilson.
00:57:29Fulham have drawn two of their last four,
00:57:33Brighton four of their last six,
00:57:35and you feel that this could be tight too.
00:57:38Fulham make two changes from their defeat at Leeds.
00:57:41Lukic and Sessegnon replaced by Kevin and Alex Iwobi,
00:57:45who, like substitutes Bassey and Chukwese,
00:57:48has returned from AFCON with Nigeria,
00:57:50where they were semi-finalists.
00:57:52Brighton make three changes from Monday night.
00:57:55Boscalli, Beliba and Ayari in for Veltman, Hinchelwood and Gruda.
00:57:59Beliba also back from AFCON with Cameroon,
00:58:02where he was a quarter-finalist.
00:58:04It's his first Brighton start since mid-December.
00:58:11Cuenca's forward ball has fallen nicely for Harry Wilson.
00:58:14Iwobi giving him an option on the right,
00:58:17Wilson using that space.
00:58:19And Raul Jiménez has dinked through
00:58:21and Verbruggen makes the save.
00:58:23Raul Jiménez here did superbly well,
00:58:26tried to beat Verbruggen at his near post
00:58:28and the right-hand keeper stuck out his arm,
00:58:30which was enough.
00:58:32Alex Iwobi.
00:58:35Castagne.
00:58:36Early cross, decent cross.
00:58:38Kevin, Raul Jiménez!
00:58:42Cannoned off Lewis Dunk pretty kindly for Verbruggen.
00:58:45He took the cross on early here, Castagne,
00:58:48and it nearly paid dividends.
00:58:50Mitomo.
00:59:02And Gross in a good position.
00:59:07Iwobi wasn't quite sure where Harry Wilson was.
00:59:12Yasin Ayari might take on the shot.
00:59:14He did!
00:59:15Oh, I say!
00:59:16Didn't he just?
00:59:17Yasin Ayari belts Brighton in front.
00:59:22Barnstorming shot into the roof of Bernd Leno's net.
00:59:26Well, they've barely troubled Bernd Leno until this moment.
00:59:30But this moment is one to remember for Yasin Ayari.
00:59:35Look at the power he generates here.
00:59:38There's not much to aim at.
00:59:40Beautifully hit.
00:59:42Bernd Leno got two hands to it.
00:59:43He won't be happy.
00:59:45But that was travelling.
00:59:47And the German couldn't keep it out.
00:59:49Fulham nil.
00:59:50Brighton one.
00:59:54Lewis Dunk.
00:59:55I think Mitomo's onside here.
00:59:56And he's controlled that brilliantly.
00:59:58And he could have turned it square.
01:00:00It ricochets to Cadiolo.
01:00:01It's off the line.
01:00:04This could so easily have been 2-0.
01:00:06And it's all really down to a brilliant ball from Dunk.
01:00:09Mitomo onside.
01:00:10That's a really good first touch.
01:00:16Flicks off the boot of Bernd Leno.
01:00:19And Castagne.
01:00:21Credit the Belgian.
01:00:22Right place, right time.
01:00:28Van Hecker.
01:00:30Pascal Gross.
01:00:31Oh, it's a lovely ball.
01:00:32Karu Mitomo.
01:00:34Ah, he's flashed it across Welbeck.
01:00:37With too much pace on it.
01:00:39Too much height on it too, I would have thought.
01:00:41Here's Diego Gomez.
01:00:43Oh.
01:00:46Kadiolo Mitomo.
01:00:47That's a good header.
01:00:48One which Welbeck very nearly got onto.
01:00:54Might have just deflected off his kneecap.
01:00:58Brighton close.
01:00:59Twice in quick succession.
01:01:00Joachim Andersson.
01:01:05That's a tester for Boscalli.
01:01:08And he's missed it.
01:01:10And here is Chukwazic who scores.
01:01:17And he took it beautifully.
01:01:18Fulham one, Brighton one.
01:01:24And Chukwazic.
01:01:26And once that cleared Boscalli, Brighton were in all kinds of bother.
01:01:31Great ball.
01:01:34Anderson's delivery.
01:01:36Boscalli in trouble.
01:01:40And an excellent composed finish from Samuel Chukwazic.
01:01:45And Fulham a level.
01:01:47Really took it well.
01:01:49Very, very composed.
01:01:52And now Hernandez has charged down Lewis Dunk.
01:01:56And he finds Harry Wilson.
01:01:57And here's Tom Kearney.
01:01:59And Kearney blocked by Dunk was superb.
01:02:03Welbeck laying it off to Mitoma.
01:02:06Two up for Brighton, four back for Fulham.
01:02:08Caru Mitoma, brilliant ball.
01:02:10Danny Welbeck, 2-1 Brighton.
01:02:12Well Brighton only had two up.
01:02:17And sometimes it only takes two.
01:02:22Well, is this going to stand?
01:02:25Video assistant referee Tony Harrington is going to be examining this very, very closely indeed.
01:02:32Oh, that's close.
01:02:33That's close.
01:02:35That's close.
01:02:38But if Arsene Wenger gets his way, this is going to be a goal all day long.
01:02:43In future.
01:02:45But it may not be a goal today.
01:02:46Looks to me like Welbeck's right shoulder might be in an offside position.
01:02:53And this is going to be ruled out.
01:02:56Offside Welbeck.
01:02:58By a tiny margin, but to the naked eye on the replay, it looks like the correct decision.
01:03:04Well, neither of them want to draw.
01:03:07Welbeck arriving!
01:03:08A really good save!
01:03:09Well, Bernd Leno denying Danny Welbeck.
01:03:10Great ball in by Pascal Gros.
01:03:11Met on the full by Welbeck.
01:03:12Just dipping under the crossbar.
01:03:13Van Hecker.
01:03:14Van Hecker.
01:03:15Costou last scorer of that brilliant late, late winner against Bournemouth on Monday night.
01:03:19But he's lost the ball here and he's fouled Josh King.
01:03:21That's going to be a free kick to Fulham.
01:03:22And a yellow card for Costou.
01:03:24And a yellow card for Costou.
01:03:25And a really good save.
01:03:26And a really good save.
01:03:27Well, Bernd Leno denying Danny Welbeck.
01:03:28Great ball in by Pascal Gros.
01:03:29Met on the full by Welbeck.
01:03:30Just dipping under the crossbar.
01:03:32Van Hecker.
01:03:34Van Hecker.
01:03:35Costou last scorer of that brilliant late, late winner against Bournemouth on Monday night.
01:03:37But he's lost the ball here and he's fouled Josh King.
01:03:39That's going to be a free kick to Fulham and a yellow card for Costoulas.
01:03:48Could be a really significant moment this.
01:03:52Into the 92nd minute.
01:03:55It's Wilson.
01:03:56Well hit.
01:03:57Oh, brilliant.
01:03:59Well, Yasin Ayari scored a great goal in that net in the first half.
01:04:03Harry Wilson has just topped it.
01:04:05From the jewel in Fulham's crown.
01:04:12The Welsh wizard that is Harry Wilson.
01:04:15Well, Bernd Leno would have been disappointed with the Ayari goal.
01:04:19Verbruggen likewise with this.
01:04:21But it is a great strike.
01:04:24And the latest in the Harry Wilson showreel.
01:04:292-1 Fulham.
01:04:30Football is sometimes brutal.
01:04:34Sometimes the better team loses.
01:04:37We control the things we could control.
01:04:40Some things you can't control in football.
01:04:42And we have to accept it.
01:04:44You've drawn a lot of matches.
01:04:45But the fact are now in the Premier League you've won one of ten.
01:04:48Is that a worry?
01:04:49I see the team working together.
01:04:51I see the team sticking together.
01:04:52And sometimes you need luck in football.
01:04:55And this kind of luck we have to get back.
01:04:58We have to work hard for it.
01:05:00Like you said, there were a lot of jaws.
01:05:02A lot of games that were tight.
01:05:03They could go easily also in our direction.
01:05:05The same like this game today.
01:05:07You have to be honest.
01:05:08I think probably the draw was the more fair result this afternoon.
01:05:12But the reality that we were reward for our belief.
01:05:15And we got the three points in a very difficult game.
01:05:17And what a win for us.
01:05:18You talk about belief.
01:05:20Harry Wilson is full of belief at the moment.
01:05:22Because he's done so many special things this season.
01:05:24And that's just another example today.
01:05:26When you are on top of your confidence,
01:05:28everything comes together.
01:05:29And he has to keep doing the right things.
01:05:31He did work very hard.
01:05:33Probably in this game the decision was not in the top level.
01:05:37But the chance he got it.
01:05:38What a goal from him.
01:05:40What a free kick from long distance.
01:05:42And victory points that helped the team again.
01:05:45Well, all the stats show, don't they, Ashley?
01:05:46That he is in the form of his life.
01:05:48Harry Wilson.
01:05:49I mean, this is his best season.
01:05:51Yeah, this is his eighth Premier League goal.
01:05:53And what a time to score it right at the end of the game.
01:05:56You can just see that he's enjoying his football so much
01:05:58at international level and at club level.
01:06:00This is right at the end of the game.
01:06:02Yes, he does get hold of this free kick.
01:06:05But I think for Bruggan, he will be disappointed that
01:06:07he doesn't save it and get a better hand on it and push it out.
01:06:10But, you know, at that point in the game,
01:06:12you're looking at it and you're going,
01:06:13well, if anyone's going to score a goal,
01:06:14it's probably going to be Harry Wilson.
01:06:15He's scored so many amazing goals this season.
01:06:18And the manager is saying he's full of confidence.
01:06:20And you can see that in the way that he's playing.
01:06:22He's 28.
01:06:24Do you think now at that age, he has that belief
01:06:27that he is the man for Fulham, maybe the man for Wales?
01:06:31Yeah, 100%.
01:06:32I think he thinks that's why he's on that free kick there
01:06:34at the end of the game.
01:06:35It's the same when he plays for Wales.
01:06:37He knows that the pressure's on him.
01:06:38People are expecting him to deliver.
01:06:40And he is delivering now.
01:06:41So I think that he kind of stepped up to that,
01:06:44that I'll be the man for my team.
01:06:46And he's enjoying that responsibility.
01:06:48There was only ever going to be one person take that free kick.
01:06:51Yeah.
01:06:52And it was him.
01:06:53So with the form that he's in, the belief that he's got,
01:06:56why not?
01:06:57He's flying.
01:06:58Look, he's in great form.
01:06:59Fulham are in good form.
01:07:00They're flying in the Premier League.
01:07:02And yet they have this kind of dilemma at the moment.
01:07:05Harry Wilson's out of contract at the end of the season,
01:07:08as is Marco Silva, who at the moment is on course
01:07:12for his best Premier League finish.
01:07:14And you kind of feel, don't you Alan,
01:07:16that the two's futures are likely to be linked.
01:07:19Yeah.
01:07:20And you certainly can understand it from Harry Wilson's point of view,
01:07:23because why would you sign a deal if you're not knowing
01:07:27who the manager's going to be?
01:07:28And he's well within his rights to sit and wait,
01:07:31because personally he might get a better deal elsewhere
01:07:35if it's not going to work out with Fulham,
01:07:37what he wants to get.
01:07:38Or indeed if the manager's going to stay or go.
01:07:40And Marco Silva will probably be waiting as well
01:07:42for what we continuously talk about,
01:07:44will be a bon fight of a summer.
01:07:46Yeah, but I expect there to be clubs without managers
01:07:50and there's a few managers, good ones,
01:07:52that are floating around.
01:07:53So he probably just wants to wait and see, you know,
01:07:55where his future lies as well.
01:07:57Right.
01:07:58Before we go, just time to show you the Premier League table.
01:08:01Manchester City have gone to within four points of Arsenal,
01:08:05who play Manchester United tomorrow.
01:08:07Fourth place Liverpool will drop down the table
01:08:09if other results go against them.
01:08:11during the remainder of the weekend.
01:08:13And as we've been saying, Fulham climb to seventh.
01:08:16West Ham now just two points from safety
01:08:19after those back-to-back league victories.
01:08:22Burnley's draw leaves them seven points adrift.
01:08:24Bournemouth have gone up to 13th.
01:08:28Right, I'll keep this end bit as basic as possible,
01:08:30so the bit in the middle seems a lot more memorable.
01:08:33Goodbye.
01:08:34I'm sorry.
01:08:35I'm sorry.
01:08:36I'm sorry.
01:08:37I'm sorry.
01:08:39Goodbye.
01:08:40Goodbye.
01:08:41Bye.
01:08:42Goodbye.
01:08:43Goodbye.
01:08:44Goodbye.
