00:00A boy bitten by a shark in Sydney's east almost a week ago has died in hospital.
00:06The 12-year-old was the first of four people bitten in a matter of hours in New South Wales waters.
00:12Our reporter Alex Lewis joins me in the studio with more on this.
00:16Hi there Alex, this is just a terrible tragedy. What can you tell us?
00:20Terribly sad news indeed Mel.
00:22The parents of Nico Antique released a statement a short time ago and I'll read some of that.
00:27They say Nico was a happy, friendly and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit.
00:34He was always full of life and that's how we'll remember him.
00:37His parents went on to thank first responders and the teams at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, for everything they did to care for Nico.
00:45And they've also thanked everyone in the community for their support and kind messages.
00:49So Nico, a 12-year-old boy, was jumping off rocks west of Shark Beach at Nielsen Park at Vaucluse on Sunday when he was bitten by a shark about 4.20 in the afternoon.
01:02Both of his legs were critically injured.
01:05Some of his friends pulled him to shore and they were praised by police and the Premier for their bravery.
01:12Emergency services responded extremely quickly.
01:15They were able to apply tourniquets and rush him to hospital.
