00:00We did not believe he was involved in any competition at the time.
00:03The gentleman is an experienced surfer.
00:04He was there with a number of mates
00:06and he'd only been in the water for about half an hour at the time.
00:08I understand it was probably about 50 metres behind the break
00:11so that would probably put it around about 100 metres off the beach.
00:13There was a couple of other surfers who managed to see him in the surf
00:16and managed to get him back out.
00:18But unfortunately by that time, we understand he'd lost probably a lot of blood.
00:22Yeah, resuscitation was not possible.
00:23I believe it was his mates who were nearby
00:25and from what I understand there was a couple of people very nearby
00:28who believed what they saw was a shark.
00:30Yeah, so we're fairly confident it was a shark.
00:33And I've got to say, it's a terrible, terrible thing
00:35and it's one of those freak incidents that happens very, very rarely.
00:38Obviously there's a lot of people down at the beach at the time.
00:40It's a beautiful day here at DY.
00:42And so, yeah, it's a great tragedy.
00:44We didn't have volunteers there.
00:46Some surfers brought the victim back to the beach
00:48and then our call-out teams were then engaged
00:52through drones and through jet skis and other on-water assets
00:57as part of that follow-up activity.
00:59Thank you.
