00:00So I think the album for me is made from like the dance floor, you know, it's like made from how I felt when I'm on stage, I want to feel like I'm in the crowd.
00:16So good to see your face. We miss you. Welcome back.
00:19Thank you very much.
00:20Congrats on all the fun things. I mean, so much to dive down the rabbit hole of single, tour, the album.
00:26I just want to dive right in with the single if we can.
00:28Yeah.
00:28Aperture. What was like the moment for you that just made that the right word to be kind of like a vessel for the message of that song?
00:37Yeah, I think it felt I think it was the last song that we made for the album.
00:43And I think it came a time when we were feeling like our just freest.
00:49And I think as we were making the song, it felt kind of really obvious to me that it was a that it should be first on the album.
01:00So so it was kind of like, oh, this this is exactly how I've kind of always wanted to, like, open an album with this this kind of song.
01:08So I like the idea of, you know, Aperture being the kind of opening of of of of the record.
01:18So it felt between that and then I think when I found that when I started playing music to people, it was just always the first song that I would play.
01:30So it kind of became really obvious that that should be the kind of leading song that we went with.
01:37And, yeah, it's been a really like important song to me, I think, represents the last couple of years of my life.
01:46You know, the idea that, you know, you can you can really choose kind of how much you let in to your life.
01:56And, you know, if you if you're going to be more closed off, then you're going to close off to certain things.
02:01But also you're going to close off a lot of the positive things that can come.
02:06So I think kind of deciding at a time when I was trying to be more open in my life, I think this song kind of wrapped that up pretty, pretty neatly for me.
02:18Yeah, it's a great word because it could be interpreted so many ways, but it's also very direct for like cameras.
02:23You're right. Letting in light. The focus, the depth. Is that kind of where you're focused on in life?
02:28Like what's the focus? Is it about depth? Is it about how much light you're letting in? Is that kind of the the route you went with it?
02:34Yeah, I think I think the last the last couple of years, you know, after finishing the tour and everything, I just kind of decided to take a couple of years away to kind of spend a bit more time like swimming in like different corners of my life.
02:52I hadn't necessarily paid that much attention to. And and and I think, you know, the start of last year, I kind of just decided I was going to say yes to everything.
03:03I think I'd I'd got really used to saying no to a lot of things just from being on the road and, you know, missing certain things that maybe my friends were doing or something.
03:14And I kind of just wanted to take the year to just, yeah, just kind of go with it and be open to like traveling a bit more and taking people up on invites and like just just experiencing things that otherwise I think I'd I'd started kind of shutting myself off from a bit.
03:31Yeah. And it led to just a lot of positivity for me. So it's it was kind of a perfect like mission statement of the whole album.
03:40It's a great movie, too. I mean, that's like a proven thing. Say yes to stuff, you know, usually leads to good things.
03:47What does Aperture tell us about the rest of the album? It's interesting. It's the last song that you kind of, you know, added to it.
03:52But what does it tell us, you know, before we get the album March 6th?
03:54Yeah, I think for me, the album is a lot about it's like the last two years for me has been a lot about getting on the other side of the of the audience experience.
04:06I think I've spent a lot of time being the one on stage and I spent a lot of time the last couple of years like going to shows, having my own like music experiences of being a true audience member and reminding myself like how special that is and how amazing that feeling is to be in a room with people, you know,
04:29people, people, people, you don't know and dancing and singing and having this kind of common thing together.
04:37So I think the album for me is made from like the dance floor, you know, it's like made from how I felt when I'm on stage, I want to feel like I'm in the crowd.
04:50And that was that was the reason why I think the album ended up sounding how it sounds is, is that the intention was, how do I make it like it's made from within the crowd and not I'm up here delivering songs to you and you're receiving them.
05:09And it's like, we're all here for the same thing, you know?
05:11Yeah, no, I love that. And it's, I'm so glad you took that time. And it's so interesting to hear about how you're doing the things you wanted to do.
05:18And obviously you found your process with like how you work and your routines and everything. And I'm just curious where your mindset is on this, like with that time between four years ago from your last album,
05:27do you feel as if it's almost like an itch to put out new music or does it sometimes, is it like a pressure or almost like a responsibility? Would you say?
05:36I think a lot of, I think a lot of the last couple of years was trying to quiet all of that down. I think I knew that the reason I didn't want to put out another album was because I felt like pressured or responsibility or like it was just time.
05:57I think taking some time away from it really allowed me to like, just let the music happen. And I kind of said at the start of that, like the next time I'm going to put an album out, it will just be because the music is ready and I'm ready.
06:11And I think getting to a place where I'm like, I'm so ready to play these songs. I just want to play them. That felt like the best reason to put an album out.
06:22So, you know, it's really, it's been like a really amazing time for me to like step away from everything for a while. And, and that means I think after having that, it's kind of landed me in a place where I feel like in a much healthier position to like come back and do this in the way that I want to do it and do it.
06:49Like I'm here because I love it. I'm here because I really want to put this music out. I, I'm going to tour because I love playing those and, and not because, you know, after a tour, you make an album and then you tour it, you know, it feels, it feels like I'm kind of, I feel like totally refreshed in the way that I'm, I'm coming to it now.
07:12I can't wait to see it. I mean, talk about playing these, playing these songs. You're going to be doing it a lot, probably refreshed energy, maybe some backflips. We'll see.
07:19But for the album or I mean the tour, sorry, together, together, um, 30 nights, Madison Square Garden, that is unreal. I can't wait to make my way out there at some point, but then for soccer stadiums for the rest of the tour dates, it's so fun. When I think of like soccer stadiums, I do think of like team and unity and togetherness and with the lyrics in the song, you know, we belong together. Is that something that like maybe subconsciously or like consciously played into choosing those is where you're going to do this tour?
07:46Yeah, I think it's a lot about, um, you know, the magic that comes from those moments where you're like with people that you don't know and singing the same song and dancing with them.
07:59And there is a, there is an understanding that everyone is there for a reason. And those reasons might not always be the same, but there is like a thread with why people go to shows and what it gives you and how you can leave a show feeling so energized and inspired.
08:19And, and, and I think the, the, the scale of those rooms is like something that can add to the magic sometimes, you know? Um, so I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I think the, the kind of plan of the tour was like, okay, the shows will be best if I'm able to have as much fun as possible.
08:40And, um, and that's kind of been like the, the idea of, of, of, of the tour. And, um, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm just really excited to start like playing these songs. It's going to be, it's going to be fun.
08:55You don't need to convince me to go to New York for a weekend trip to see you, but like LA, any other plans at some point? Would love to see you in the hometown here. Um, will it expand at some point?
09:03Yeah. Yeah. Maybe, maybe I think we'll do, we'll, we'll go one, uh, one year at a time. We'll do this year. We'll get you at some point. 2030. I'll take it. I'm ready. Um, my last thing for you. Aperture is such a great song for like running. I don't know if you realized if subconsciously, I mean, I love a long song, um, makes the run feel shorter, you know, cause, but you're lightning out there, dude. Like I just did the New York city marathon. Seeing you do these marathons is unreal. Thank you so much.
09:32What's your relationship, relationship like with running and how do you decide the names that you go into these marathons with? I'm so curious.
09:40Oh, I think the relationship between, you know, the, that kind of like almost spiritual aspect that music can have the kind of, you know, the, when you're dancing and you get into this kind of like meditative place, I think there is a lot of synergy there between how you can feel
10:02when you're running sometimes. And I think it's, I think all of that stuff like feeds each other, you know, for me, I learned a lot about, um, what allowed me to like go to places, uh, that don't feel like, oh, I'm really just in the music right now, you know, and that, that's the kind of thing that makes running more enjoyable, you know?
10:27And, and I think that the relationship between the kind of meditative aspect of that music can have and the meditative aspect that running can sometimes have, it was, it was like weirdly made a lot of sense to me that, that, um, those two things kind of happened at the same time.
10:47But, um, yeah, I think just, just feeling like clear and present and like doing one thing at a time and just being in it was, was kind of the goal of both.
10:59Um, so yeah. And the names, I, I don't know, it's silly really.
11:04They're great. They're always so good, but Aperture's on the running playlist. It's on the radio now. So excited for you, man. And it's great to catch up with you.
11:12Like congrats on all the success and so happy you're back.
11:14Appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me.
