Professor Dr. Alfred Wegener conducted an important preliminary expedition in 1929 for the German Greenland Expedition, laying the foundations for the major undertaking of 1930/31, which crowned his life's work, to substantiate the theory of continental drift through research in the inland ice, before he tragically lost his life on the main expedition of 1930/31.
