00:00You make me feel like a natural woman.
00:07On their Thursday shows, the late night host took time to pay tribute to musical
00:10legend Aretha Franklin, who passed away earlier in the day.
00:13On NBC's Tonight Show, guest Ariana Grande and house band The Roots honored the late
00:17Franklin by opening the show with a rendition of You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman.
00:30Fallon also took a moment during his show to pay his respects to Franklin, who he said was a fan.
00:34We loved Aretha. She was a fan of late night back when no one was watching us, the host said.
00:39Later, during her sit-down with Fallon, Grande recalled meeting Franklin and also the moment
00:43she blacked out when Franklin personally called her on the phone.
00:47Grande explained that the musical icon had asked to send her music from her relative,
00:51so Grande told her to text her the mp3.
00:53And she was like, well, I don't know how to do that, so I'm going to send it to you.
00:56And like four months later, I got a package with like a CD.
01:00On CBS's The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert reminisced about seeing Franklin perform
01:04live at the Kennedy Center once.
01:06I said to the man standing next to me, one of the stagehands, I said,
01:10man, I wish I could have seen her when she was younger, when she was in full voice.
01:14And boy, am I stupid.
01:16Colbert then threw to a clip from the performance to demonstrate what he meant.
01:26Over on ABC's Live, Jimmy Kimmel used his sit-down with Don Cheadle to speak about Franklin.
01:32The actor told Kimmel that in January 2017, he received a call from Franklin who had
01:36recently seen Miles Ahead, the Miles Davis movie starring Cheadle.
01:39And she was just impressed by the movie and very complimentary and I was knocked out.
01:44Cheadle went on to tell Kimmel that the two would occasionally text back and forth,
01:47joking that the singer texted like his auntie.
01:50All caps, you know, weird symbols that don't mean anything. It was the whole thing.
01:54And on Comedy Central's The Daily Show, Trevor Noah chatted to his audience about Franklin
01:58during his between-the-scenes bit.
01:59The late-night host recalled listening to Franklin's music while growing up
02:03and having a profound love for the soul singer's tunes.
02:05I used to sing all the songs not really knowing what they meant, Noah said.
02:09Noah also applauded Franklin for being a trailblazer, unafraid to stand up for what she believed in,
02:14noting that she refused to perform to segregated audiences and was one of the first people
02:18to support Angela Davis from the Black Panthers and Martin Luther King.
02:21This is at a time when it wasn't cool to do that. It was risky to you and your livelihood.
02:26I mean, you saw what happened with Nina Simone, you know, and she was out there and she was doing it.
02:31Noah additionally emphasized that the singer has a class of songs that could be considered crazy,
02:35given how women were treated in society during the time of her music's release,
02:39and affectionately spoke of her reputation for being a badass.
02:43She only performed when she had her money in cash before the gig.
02:47Like, she was the original bitch-better-have-my-money.
02:50Noah concluded on a pensive note saying,
02:52She'll be missed.
02:53Everything we see today in so many ways in music, male and female, is because of her.
02:57Aretha Franklin, rest in peace. It's a beautiful, beautiful story.
