At least 13 people were injured after an explosion struck an apartment building in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Adygea. Regional officials initially blamed a Ukrainian drone, but later statements avoided specifying the weapon used. Independent analysts suggest the damage may have been caused by a Russian air defence missile that went off course. The incident comes as diplomatic activity involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States intensifies on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where discussions around a possible peace framework are underway.

00:00At least 13 people were injured during an air attack on Russia's North Caucasus Republic of
00:11Adigea, according to regional authorities on Wednesday. The incident comes amid ongoing
00:17cross-border strikes linked to the war in Ukraine and as international diplomacy continues on the
00:22sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The head of Adigea, Murat Kumpilov, said the attack
00:30occurred in the village of Novaya Adigea, located next to the southern Russian city of Krasnodar.
00:36In his initial statement, Kumpilov said that a Ukrainian drone had struck an apartment building
00:43in the area. Kumpilov had returned from Moscow just a day earlier, where he met Russian President
00:50Vladimir Putin. Following the incident, he shared images of the damaged apartment building
00:55showing extensive destruction. Photos released by the regional head showed that nearly all windows
01:03of the apartment block had been blown out. Several balconies were completely destroyed and visible
01:09structural damage could be seen across multiple floors. However, in later messages posted on
01:16telegram, Kumpilov stopped specifying the type of weapon involved. Instead, he referred to the
01:22incident only as an enemy attack or an incident, without mentioning a Ukrainian drone. Independent
01:31military analysts and exiled Russian media raised questions about the cause of the explosion. According
01:38to their assessments, videos circulating online suggested that the apartment building may have
01:44been struck by a Russian anti-air missile that had gone off course. Some pro-war Russian military
01:51bloggers had suggested the building was hit by a long-range Ukrainian missile. But analysts disputed that
01:58claim, pointing instead to the possibility of a malfunctioning air defence system. Ruslan Leviev, the founder of
02:06the War Monitoring Group Conflict Intelligence Team, said this could mark the second instance in less than one week where
02:13Russian air defence systems caused damage to Russian property. This appears to be the second case in under a week
02:20where Russian air defence systems damaged civilian infrastructure inside Russia. Kumpilov said that 27 people,
02:29including one child, were placed in temporary shelters after their apartments were destroyed in the
02:34explosion and the subsequent fire.
02:36Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry said its air defence systems destroyed 52 Ukrainian drones in the
02:44skies over the Krasnodar region between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
02:50These developments come against the backdrop of intensified diplomatic activity involving Russia, Ukraine
02:58and the United States, unfolding alongside the World Economic Forum in Davos.
03:05US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Kirill Dmitriev, a close ally of President Vladimir
03:12Putin and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund during the forum.
03:18Witkoff said,
03:19We had a very positive meeting, after being asked by Russia's Izvestia newspaper about the outcome of the talks.
03:27Earlier, Dmitriev, Witkoff and US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also held
03:33discussions at what was described as the US House in Davos. According to a correspondent from Russia's
03:40Task News Agency, the closed-door meeting lasted more than two hours.
03:46The diplomatic engagements come amid ongoing speculation about the possibility of a future
03:52peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
03:56Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed these developments earlier this week,
04:01saying he would travel to Davos only if documents on security guarantees with the United States
04:07and a prosperity plan were ready to be signed.
04:12Zelenskyy had been expected to attend the World Economic Forum on Tuesday.
04:16However, he said he remained in Kyiv to manage the aftermath of a major Russian airstrike
04:21that knocked out heating supplies to around half of the city's residential apartment buildings.
04:26If the documents are ready, we will have a meeting. There will be a trip.
04:32If there are energy packages or even meetings, decisions on additional, on air defense, I will definitely go.
04:43Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine had been invited to join US President Donald Trump's
04:48Board of Peace initiative, adding that diplomats were currently working on the invitation.
04:52In addition, the Ukrainian president reiterated his call for Ukraine and Europe to create a joint defense
05:00force of up to three million people to deter what he described as the ongoing threat from Russia.
05:08He said he had first raised the proposal in 2025.
05:19The other country is the U.S. in the event in the future.
05:21It is a religious force of up to three million people to hear about it.
