On this Special Report, the focus is on the impending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, stated, 'Indeed, some call it the mother of all deals' regarding the historic trade pact. The President is scheduled to visit India following her Davos trip, specifically for the Republic Day celebrations, where a formal announcement regarding the conclusion of the deal is expected. This diplomatic move comes as both India and the EU navigate a complex global trade environment marked by significant tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Foreign Affairs Editor Geeta Mohan notes that while legal nitty-gritty remains, the agreement will open vital markets and businesses. The deal is seen as a strategic counter to economic pressures and other geopolitical threats, signaling a major shift in India-EU bilateral relations and economic cooperation.

00:23The EU president there has made a statement saying the mother of all deals with India is likely to be had soon.
00:31Also, Amit, U.S. started forward.
00:33The EU chief visit to India is going to be anything, you know, but breaking news.
00:40It will be a lot of, you know, sort of details that will come out of there.
00:45Earlier, India had signed an FTA deal with the UK, remember.
00:48But what exactly did she say? Let's listen.
00:53Right after Davos, the next weekend, I will travel to India.
01:00There's still work to do, but we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement.
01:07Indeed, some call it the mother of all deals.
01:10All right. So the EU president there making quite a statement at the World Economic Forum saying that she certain issues are still to be ironed out, but she is pretty confident that an historic deal with India will be struck.
01:29What she called mother of all deals will be struck with India.
01:34Geeta Mohan back with us.
01:36So, Geeta, on one hand, we are dealing with U.S. tariffs.
01:39On the other, EU seems to be opening its gates for us.
01:42Well, absolutely. This is a long, long overdue deal that needs to be concluded.
01:50Very, very senior, the tonight sources have told India today, Sonal, is that the FTA is not going to be signed when the leaders come.
01:59But it's certainly the conclusion announcement will take place when the presidents of the EU Commission and the EU Council visit India for the Republic Day.
02:09And that's going to be a very important announcement because following the announcement of the conclusion of the deal, the legalities and the insecurities will be ironed out, following which the FTA between India and EU will be signed.
02:22It's going to be historic. It's important. It's one that will open gates when it comes to markets and businesses between India and the European Union.
02:31And this comes at a time when both India and Europe are facing massive tariffs and a tariff war that ensues between India and the United States of America, also between Europe and U.S.
02:44For Europe, it is more important right now because it is not just about markets.
02:48It's also about the fact that Europe has another threat looming and looming really large when it comes to Trump and Trump's Greenland threat.
02:58So they have to counter America on various counts, whether it's tariffs or for that matter, Greenland.
03:06So the threat is doubled now and is the reason why you would want to see an early conclusion.
03:15What we're given to understand is that the India-EU trade deal will be concluded and the conclusion announcement will happen around the public day,
03:24after which the signing will take place once legalities are ironed out.
