"I was not only saying goodbye to the show but the life I had built there," Dinklage said of his last day filming the HBO series.

00:00Do I say? What do I do? Okay.
00:05Peter. Julia Pierpon from Xinhua News of China.
00:08This has been an extraordinary ride for you.
00:11And apparently you didn't originally want to do the role.
00:15Where'd you hear that?
00:16Everybody says that.
00:17That's nonsense.
00:18No, how does that rumor get started?
00:20No, I originally didn't want to do the role.
00:24No, I had some concerns.
00:25Maybe it's filtered down into some sort of rumor that I didn't want to do it.
00:29But when I met Dave and Dan for the first time with Carolyn Strauss,
00:33another producer on the show,
00:35so many years ago in Los Angeles here,
00:39they told me about it briefly before I met them,
00:44and I came in with some concerns about this genre.
00:48Having seen many, many pieces,
00:53because I wasn't familiar with the books,
00:55so I wasn't familiar with the complexity of Tyrion at that point,
00:59because unfortunately before this character,
01:02many times people my size weren't complicated enough for me to be interested in doing it.
01:08I had done it one or two times before, and it sort of didn't, you know, grab me.
01:13But they relieved my concerns very quickly.
01:19In the back row, in the left.
01:20Peter, congratulations.
01:22It's kind of a far-traveled journey you've had from the station agent.
01:28You know, the last time I spoke with you, you were just doing indie films,
01:32and you were perfectly happy doing indie films,
01:34and now you're in one of the most successful television programs of all time.
01:38Bittersweet to find out it was coming to an end?
01:42Of course.
01:43Yeah, I had my last day on set back in July of this year.
01:48Just two months ago now.
01:50A little over two months ago.
01:52And it was very sad.
01:55This is not only a great TV show to be a part of,
01:58but it was an enormous family to be a part of.
02:01And I'm sure you've heard that before from actors,
02:05but in this case, I was far from home.
02:08I live in New York, and we shot the show over in Europe.
02:11So many times I had to stay there,
02:14and I wasn't able to go home on the weekends.
02:16And so I really developed deep roots in the community of Ireland
02:22and in some of the other countries we shot in.
02:24So it was definitely hard to say goodbye,
02:27because I wasn't saying goodbye just to the show.
02:29I was saying goodbye to a life over there.
02:31And how do you top this?
02:33How do I top Game of Thrones?
02:36Or winning an Emmy? Or everything?
02:39No.
02:40You just keep searching,
02:42hoping that the next writer you come across
02:46is equally as talented as David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
02:51Mr. Dinklage, congratulations to you.
02:54It doesn't matter.
02:55I'm nothing to look at anyway.
02:57Hey, watch that.
02:59The show had become so popular so fast.
03:03It's a major motion picture every week.
03:05Yeah.
03:06With its popularity, I know that didn't surprise a lot of people as it began to grow.
03:10But has anything in that process surprised you?
03:16About what?
03:17About the popularity?
03:18About the growth of it?
03:19About where it went?
03:20Yeah, it's always very surprising.
03:22Oftentimes, the things I love being a part of, the movies I make, that I'm very proud of,
03:28nobody ends up seeing.
03:30Because they're indie movies and we struggle to find audiences for them.
03:35But this had that same feeling, but on a grander scale.
03:40And I absolutely adored this character and the stories we were telling.
03:45So it's just so beautiful when other people feel the same thing you do.
03:51Last question here on the right.
03:53Hi there, Peter.
03:54Angela Bishop from Network 10 Australia.
03:56G'day.
03:57Hello.
03:58You came down under a few years ago to make one of your films,
04:01I Love You Too with Pete Hellyer and I thought it was magical.
04:05Now that Game of Thrones is done, would you consider coming back and making another one?
04:10On my way.
04:11On your way?
04:12I love that man.
04:13You love that man?
04:14Yeah, I do.
04:15So we could get you back down under in a flash.
04:17Anytime.
04:18Okay.
04:19You want to promise?
04:20Yes, I will commit to that promise.
04:22Thank you, Peter.
04:23Congratulations.
