00:00At about 5 o'clock this morning, a 19-year-old Canadian national went for a swim on the beach
00:29at the eastern beach of Gari, just near the Mahino wreck.
00:34Tragically, at about 6 o'clock an hour later, she was located by passers-by on the beach, deceased.
00:43At that time, police from Fraser Island, sorry, Gari and QAS attended the scene and confirmed
00:49that she was in fact deceased.
00:52I can report that there was a small pack of dingoes around the body at that time and that
00:58they had been in contact with the young girl's body.
01:10At this stage, it's too early to confirm how the young lady lost her life.
01:16We are investigating all possibilities.
01:18We have deployed, as in we as in QPS, have deployed scenes of crime officers as well as detectives
01:25to Gari today to investigate this very horrific set of circumstances, obtain witness statements
01:33and obviously retrieve this young girl's body so that a post-mortem can be conducted.
01:38We'll be considering whether she may have drowned, been attacked.
01:43All of those things will be considerations and form part of our investigation.
01:46People that were on the island that were travelling down the beach noticed the group of dingoes,
02:03stopped very quickly and obviously scared those dingoes away and uncovered the young lady's
02:10body.
02:11It was a very, very confronting thing to see on the beach, which is a place that families
02:16will attend en masse at this time of year and it was also near the Mahino Wreck, which
02:21is a very common and popular tourist attraction.
02:24But all I can say is that there was a small pack of dingoes there and obviously the dead body
02:31was removed quite quickly.
02:41There's no suggestion that she was with anybody else.
02:47There's certainly no suggestion that she was unwell, either physically or mentally.
02:51She was a young, healthy Canadian woman who was enjoying the trip of a lifetime and working
02:58in a beautiful part of the world.
