00:02:35Good afternoon, sir.
00:02:38So, maybe you want to greet your followers, your friends, your family.
00:02:42Hello, everyone.
00:02:45Everybody.
00:02:46My followers.
00:02:47No, me.
00:02:48Matthew Hermosa.
00:02:49Some call me Justin.
00:02:51I would just like, yeah, I would just like to, want to say hi to my friends.
00:03:03I want to say hi to my friends, my teammates, my coaches, and especially, I want to say hi
00:03:10to my parents.
00:03:12They're actually in the US right now.
00:03:14So, hello, ma, de.
00:03:17And MJ.
00:03:18Mayang hapon sa Tanan.
00:03:21And I just want to say hi to Mandawi City Sports Office, to Mandawi City, and to my lovely
00:03:30daughter, Athena, my husband, and my family and friends.
00:03:35Mayang hapon sa Tanan.
00:03:37I'm sure a lot of our viewers are very excited to see you today and to learn from your experiences.
00:03:44So, speaking of learnings, we would like to also get to know your story that got you to
00:03:51the success that both of you are today.
00:03:55So, how did your journey into endurance sports begin?
00:04:01So, we'll start with MJ.
00:04:04So, I started running at the age of 12.
00:04:08So, I accidentally get into running by joining the schools and tramurals.
00:04:12So, I grew up in a mountain barangay in Cebu in barangay Guba.
00:04:17So, that was the first time that there's a running competition in Guba Elementary School.
00:04:25And then, kanan na time, kanan mga babae, nga bata, nga gagmay, murag, maulaw pa mantang mudagan sa una.
00:04:31Uy, murag, wala pagod na ang running before.
00:04:34Mahug mo ko siyang murag punishment.
00:04:36When you, kumakita ni mo sa training into the ROTC, the military, running is for them murag punishment.
00:04:44So, para sa na mo sa una, isa sa young girl, maulaw kita mo apilog mga individual sports like running.
00:04:52So, that time, wala, wala mo nang register ako mga friends.
00:04:55Ang tananggi apilan, volleyball, basketball, and the rest of badminton, the usual games.
00:05:01Ako, ni-sign up ko secretly.
00:05:03But when I get to go to the starting line, maulaw ko.
00:05:06I was wearing my uniform pa, the skirt, a sleeper.
00:05:11And then, dagan lang gik ko.
00:05:12And then, I was amazed. I really ran that fast.
00:05:16But like, nilingi pa ko lang, kalayo sa ako mga kontra.
00:05:19So, that time, my teacher saw the potential in me.
00:05:23And then, let me compete in a enter school competition to a unit meet.
00:05:29Basta, my entire year in that, I was grade 6 that time.
00:05:33Basta, mas kinasa na ko niya gipa-appil.
00:05:35And then, leading me towards the Cebu City Olympics, the Milo Little Olympics.
00:05:39That time, para na kumurag mo na niya ang Olympics.
00:05:43And then, to Central Visayas, Batang Pinoy, and eventually, leading to the Palarong Pambansa.
00:05:48Palarong Pambansa was the top national sports, parang tournament in the country that time.
00:05:56Pero, as a 12 years old, dili pa na na ko ma-appreciate good ang sport.
00:06:00Later na, so, nag-flashback na tanan, unsan na ika-importante ni Batang Pinoy, parang pambansa.
00:06:05Basta, fast forward, dito ko na discover.
00:06:08And then, leading into Palarong Pambansa.
00:06:10But then, during high school lang, I have to sacrifice sports.
00:06:15Because I have to really focus on the academics.
00:06:17Because that time, I did not know na naaday opportunity sa sports na you can get the scholarship.
00:06:25Wala pa na sa unag yun.
00:06:26Kaya, pag-ib na ang varsity scholarship on my time.
00:06:30So, I focused on the academics.
00:06:32So, graduated salutatorian during high school.
00:06:34And it was during college that I used running to finish my studies.
00:06:39So, graduated Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major in Management Accounting,
00:06:44and a Master's in Public Administration in Southwestern University by being a varsity scholar.
00:06:49Kaya, that time, though I was offered two scholarships, the academic and the varsity scholarship during college.
00:06:58But I used the varsity scholarship because,
00:07:01naka-ana ko ba, since kinder ko or grade one,
00:07:05nag-maintain, naging ko grades.
00:07:06Like, I was the usual nga good student, good book, library, house, then to own, kadlang, dako, ano.
00:07:14So, buotan na kay ko as a student, no?
00:07:17Kay Muraginana.
00:07:18So, I also want to enjoy katong the love I had, a one-year love for running.
00:07:23So, dito na, nagsugod sa college.
00:07:25I was a sprinter before leading into long-distance running.
00:07:28So, taas-taas gina-chali akong story, pero si Matthew sa.
00:07:33E di tamahuman, marami siya, marathonsad akong story, sir.
00:07:37It's not a sprint.
00:07:38Yes, that's a sprint.
00:07:39It's a marathon.
00:07:40Sige, Matthew.
00:07:40It's also a long story, but I'll try to make it short, sad.
00:07:46I started swimming, like, back in, I don't know, I was like six, seven years old pa.
00:07:53So, I've known sport since like six years old.
00:07:57So, that's like 14 years already.
00:08:01To be honest, it wasn't easy.
00:08:04It was hard, very hard.
00:08:06When we started swimming, I didn't really like it.
00:08:09To be honest, I'm not that fast at swimming.
00:08:13But right now, it's okay.
00:08:16And then now, leading up to 2015, where Coach Andoy discovered triathlon, it was still new at that time in the Philippines.
00:08:26And then Coach Andoy said to Kim, Kim's my cousin, he said, like, Kim, it's a great triathlon.
00:08:36And then they did.
00:08:38And then Kim liked it, I think.
00:08:40And then everybody started to shift.
00:08:43I started my very first race in Dumanhug.
00:08:48At that time, I used a folding bike.
00:08:51So, after the swim, because like, for triathlon, it wasn't really like fast swimmers.
00:08:56It's more like they rely on cycling and running.
00:08:58When I went out of the swim, I was like far, far, like, in the front.
00:09:08But then, when I started biking, it was really different.
00:09:12And then I fell down.
00:09:14The chain on my bike fell.
00:09:17And I couldn't put it back on.
00:09:18So, I just pushed the bike and then ran the whole bike course.
00:09:24But then a marshal stopped me.
00:09:26And then an old coach of mine actually helped me put the chain back.
00:09:32So, I did.
00:09:33But then when I crossed the finish line, I was already last.
00:09:36And then later on, qualified for national team in 2022.
00:09:43So, basically, during pandemic, it was very hard to train endurance sports since it's mostly outdoors.
00:09:52Unless you have like a treadmill for running, trainers for cycling.
00:09:57It's very hard to do it.
00:09:59So, it wasn't that comfortable to do it at home.
00:10:03And then it paid off.
00:10:05Basically, the hard work paid off.
00:10:07Because I was able to qualify for national team in 2022.
00:10:11And then later that year, I qualified 2023 for SEA Games.
00:10:17And then after SEA Games, qualified for Asian Games.
00:10:20And then so on and so forth.
00:10:21I raced a few times back here and there.
00:10:24And then to the latest one in 2025, we had Thailand SEA Games.
00:10:30So, short but long.
00:10:32No, no, no.
00:10:34This is a conversation.
00:10:36So, short or long, that's fine.
00:10:38Sprint or marathon, that's fine.
00:10:40Sige.
00:10:42Now, at what point in your journey,
00:10:46nga nakarealize mo nga,
00:10:48I think I can compete at a higher level.
00:10:53Nasa man itong mga aha moments ninyo nga,
00:10:55right in that moment nga nga,
00:10:56I think I can go international with this.
00:11:01Sige, ako, akong aha moment.
00:11:03So, when I started doing long distance running,
00:11:07so I shifted from a sprinter,
00:11:09lahigid ang disipline,
00:11:11because I used to run 100 meter dash, 200, 400.
00:11:14And then it was when my last year in college,
00:11:17I shifted kay Moralito,
00:11:18naisugod ang fun runs sa Cebu 2008,
00:11:23early 2008.
00:11:24But I shifted 2009 kay that time.
00:11:26Gamay pagid ang mga babae managan.
00:11:28You would really know,
00:11:29kinsa lang ang musud sa top three.
00:11:31So, na-challenge ko,
00:11:32I started joining 3K,
00:11:33then 5K.
00:11:35And eventually,
00:11:36when I joined my first 10K-lometer run,
00:11:40headline kay ko,
00:11:41like,
00:11:42pero nag-collapse on the finish line.
00:11:44So, it made a huge headline good kay.
00:11:47I used to win in sprinting,
00:11:49and then,
00:11:50pag-abot na ko,
00:11:51pag-shift na ko sa long distance running,
00:11:53I collapsed on my first 10K-lometer run.
00:11:55So, for me,
00:11:56kanala nga time,
00:11:56mura ko,
00:11:57nalipay ko,
00:11:58kay nakahuman ko sa 10K,
00:11:59but at the same time,
00:12:00I received a lot of discouragement na,
00:12:03especially the coaches nga naas
00:12:05sa long distance running,
00:12:06mo na sila.
00:12:07So, wagin kay lugar neri sa sprinting,
00:12:09sa long distance running,
00:12:10Mary Joy.
00:12:11Sprinter, ragid ka.
00:12:13So, but that,
00:12:14ka na nga mga discouragement,
00:12:16ako ginanggi koan nga.
00:12:18At I took it as a challenge,
00:12:20the next time that they want,
00:12:22they will see me running long distance,
00:12:25podium na dapat.
00:12:26So, I stopped running for a year.
00:12:28I have to focus on,
00:12:30nang ikuan ginako ako ang self,
00:12:33nga,
00:12:33the next time,
00:12:34nga mudagan akong marathon,
00:12:35nilinagig ko magkolaps.
00:12:37And yes,
00:12:37after a year of focusing on,
00:12:40developing myself,
00:12:41training for endurance,
00:12:43focusing on the bigger goal,
00:12:44nga,
00:12:44I want to be,
00:12:45on top of my goal,
00:12:47I want to be the top marathon,
00:12:49one of the top marathoners in the country.
00:12:52And when you say that,
00:12:53you have to really,
00:12:53sa amuamang gong sport,
00:12:55endurance sports,
00:12:55basically mi sa numbers.
00:12:57Numbers won't lie.
00:12:58We really have to work on getting,
00:12:59hitting those numbers,
00:13:01un sa ang current national record.
00:13:02Can I work for that?
00:13:04So, mawagin akong ultimate goal.
00:13:05So, pag sugod pa na ako sa long distance running,
00:13:07I already knew what,
00:13:08where to go.
00:13:09Asa ako ang lane dapat.
00:13:11I's on the finish line,
00:13:13but still have to,
00:13:14I still have a lot of work to do.
00:13:17Kay sprinter ko,
00:13:18daku kay ako ang paa.
00:13:19As in,
00:13:21muscle gyan.
00:13:21Kaya sprinting,
00:13:22strength na siya.
00:13:24Power, power, power.
00:13:25And then,
00:13:26arina ka sa endurance sports,
00:13:27focus on,
00:13:28dapat mo lose weight ka,
00:13:29dapat gamayra kayo ng mga lean muscles,
00:13:31developing strength.
00:13:33Taasgi kay Kugi workout, no?
00:13:35But I'm glad,
00:13:36I'm fortunate to have a good coach gyud,
00:13:39who's really into my line gyud nga.
00:13:41Kabalog yun siya,
00:13:42un sa akong potensyal.
00:13:43Na anak ko ang kanabitong,
00:13:46mo aim ganit ko,
00:13:47mo set ganit ko,
00:13:47challenge for myself.
00:13:49Un sa ginagong gusto,
00:13:50ay achieve,
00:13:51maachieve gina na mo.
00:13:52And then, yeah.
00:13:53After a year of,
00:13:54not running into fun runs,
00:13:56I won the first,
00:14:00there's a Cebu,
00:14:02Mylo Regional Elimination,
00:14:04Diri,
00:14:04and then,
00:14:05champion ko sa 21K,
00:14:07half marathon.
00:14:08And then,
00:14:09after that,
00:14:11it gave me the ticket
00:14:12to the national marathon.
00:14:14So,
00:14:14kanang national marathon sa Mylo,
00:14:16diha mag-abot tanan mga
00:14:17best marathoners
00:14:19or long distance runners
00:14:20in the country.
00:14:22So,
00:14:22maagin akong goal,
00:14:23in order for me to be there,
00:14:24nga libre,
00:14:25I have to earn this,
00:14:27something,
00:14:27sunagi mga step by step.
00:14:29So,
00:14:29eventually,
00:14:29very strategic,
00:14:30strategic,
00:14:31you have to really,
00:14:32long term,
00:14:33long endurance,
00:14:35long run,
00:14:35so long term.
00:14:37So,
00:14:37naabot ko sa national
00:14:39Mylo Marathon,
00:14:41and,
00:14:42ang ako ato,
00:14:42na-overwhelm ko
00:14:43to see this
00:14:44in-person,
00:14:46our current national record
00:14:47holder in marathon.
00:14:48Like,
00:14:49idol ka ayo ba?
00:14:50Maragma ko said na,
00:14:50same with other runners,
00:14:52karoon makita sa gina ko
00:14:53akong self nila,
00:14:54no?
00:14:54So,
00:14:54ina-asad ko sa una.
00:14:56So,
00:14:56my goal,
00:14:56pag abot na dito sa national
00:14:58Mylo Marathon,
00:14:59na-shift na said,
00:14:59kay marathon kalit.
00:15:01So,
00:15:01pas-pas ka ayo,
00:15:02from sprinter
00:15:03to 10K nga nag-collapse
00:15:04to winning the half marathon
00:15:06and eventually
00:15:07to the marathon,
00:15:08no?
00:15:08So,
00:15:09my first national Mylo Marathon
00:15:10or my first marathon,
00:15:11nag-third dahion ko
00:15:12sa Mylo Marathon.
00:15:14And then,
00:15:14naman na to,
00:15:15nagsugod na dahion ako
00:15:16ang name.
00:15:16And then,
00:15:18it took me three years
00:15:19to maintain,
00:15:21nga nung,
00:15:22wak mo ko nag-improve
00:15:23sa marathon.
00:15:23Nga nung,
00:15:24permiraman ko third
00:15:25every national Mylo Marathon.
00:15:27Like,
00:15:27nga nung di ma ginaku
00:15:28makuha ang second,
00:15:29ang first.
00:15:30So,
00:15:31nag-shift na po
00:15:31dme o training plan
00:15:33at training
00:15:33mga strategies
00:15:36na mo ni coach
00:15:36focusing on marathon
00:15:38this time.
00:15:39So,
00:15:39lahi ang training sa marathon,
00:15:41lahi ang training sa half.
00:15:42Bigger goal,
00:15:43you have to be
00:15:44the marathon queen.
00:15:45Ang goal na sad ka ron
00:15:46to get the marathon queen title.
00:15:48So,
00:15:48after that,
00:15:49second na tong mabreak
00:15:50ang national record.
00:15:51But,
00:15:52at the back of my mind,
00:15:53I really want to get
00:15:54the time
00:15:54kay,
00:15:55kanabang murag,
00:15:57mufollow na tanan,
00:15:58if you get the time,
00:15:59murag,
00:16:00sunod-sunod na na ang rank.
00:16:01So,
00:16:01yeah,
00:16:02we work for that.
00:16:03And then,
00:16:03yeah,
00:16:03it was in 2013
00:16:04when I get the first
00:16:06National Milo Marathon
00:16:09Queen title.
00:16:11And,
00:16:11na-maintain ako siya
00:16:13for six consecutive years.
00:16:14So,
00:16:15before the pandemic.
00:16:16And,
00:16:17yeah,
00:16:17maintaining the title,
00:16:19kay,
00:16:20diigyod siya sa yun.
00:16:22Kay,
00:16:22every year,
00:16:23lahi-lahi mong challenges
00:16:24ma-experience.
00:16:25Sometimes,
00:16:26you have to run
00:16:27on a certain events,
00:16:28kay,
00:16:29you really need,
00:16:30we have different
00:16:31motivations,
00:16:32mangyino,
00:16:33kanang,
00:16:33what keep us going
00:16:34is our motivation,
00:16:36gyod.
00:16:36And then,
00:16:38kung sa'yo mong motivation,
00:16:39pag-sugod na ko,
00:16:40it was,
00:16:41to be honest,
00:16:41gyod,
00:16:42money.
00:16:42So,
00:16:43na-love na ko ang running
00:16:45sa ang fun runs
00:16:46because there's a
00:16:47monetary reward after it.
00:16:49It's not just about
00:16:50getting the medals,
00:16:51kay,
00:16:51pag-sugod na ko sa
00:16:53mga sprinting,
00:16:54medals,
00:16:54no monetary rewards
00:16:56after that.
00:16:57So,
00:16:57pag-arin na na ko sa
00:16:58ang distance,
00:16:59no,
00:16:59I get to train
00:17:00and then,
00:17:01ako ang gawang control
00:17:01sa akong training.
00:17:02Kung mag-training kong tarong,
00:17:04makadaog ko,
00:17:04makadaog ko,
00:17:05napakoy kwarta.
00:17:06So,
00:17:06that time,
00:17:07it helped me in my education.
00:17:09At the same time,
00:17:09it helped me
00:17:10with my family,
00:17:11gyod,
00:17:12kay,
00:17:12we're not well off,
00:17:13mangyod.
00:17:14So,
00:17:14I was able to,
00:17:15yeah,
00:17:15through running
00:17:16and my sweat,
00:17:17gyod,
00:17:17was able to finish
00:17:18my younger sibling
00:17:19to college
00:17:20through my running.
00:17:21So,
00:17:21daghan kayo ko,
00:17:22so,
00:17:22I was really motivated
00:17:24to train
00:17:24because I need
00:17:25to sustain this
00:17:27and blah,
00:17:27blah,
00:17:27blah.
00:17:27Later on,
00:17:28when nakuha na na ko
00:17:29akong goal
00:17:30for my family,
00:17:31Murag na,
00:17:31okay na,
00:17:32this time,
00:17:33I really want to work on
00:17:35what do I want
00:17:37for myself?
00:17:37why,
00:17:38ganong nagdagan pa man ko
00:17:39nga,
00:17:40ako naman ang marathon queen,
00:17:41ako naman ang fastest
00:17:43marathoner in the country.
00:17:44So,
00:17:44pwede na gig ko mag-maintain
00:17:45actually,
00:17:46but you have to really
00:17:47upgrade your why
00:17:49and why you're doing this
00:17:50on say next,
00:17:51what will be next
00:17:51for Mary Joy Tabal.
00:17:53So,
00:17:53it's that,
00:17:54I want to be in the
00:17:55Southeast Asian Games,
00:17:56but the next challenge,
00:17:57question is,
00:17:58how to be in the
00:17:59national team?
00:18:00So,
00:18:00maa na fast forward,
00:18:01daghan kayo ko na agian
00:18:02actually,
00:18:03before going into
00:18:05the national team
00:18:06because,
00:18:07kusog pa kayo sa una,
00:18:08no,
00:18:08kanang politics in sports,
00:18:09agi ko ana.
00:18:10So,
00:18:10I'm a Cebuana,
00:18:11pag muingon sila,
00:18:12Cebuana ka,
00:18:13you're from province,
00:18:14wala ka,
00:18:15so,
00:18:15you're not having
00:18:17the right training
00:18:18for us,
00:18:19lahi ang training
00:18:19sa national team,
00:18:20lahi ka din ha.
00:18:21So,
00:18:22we will not be getting you
00:18:23kay,
00:18:23wala ka,
00:18:24murag pala ka sa'y system
00:18:25sa una,
00:18:25murag ingon ana,
00:18:26ako ang nafeel,
00:18:27but then,
00:18:28numbers won't lie.
00:18:30With the help
00:18:31of the Cebuanos
00:18:31and with the help
00:18:32of the Cebu medias,
00:18:34si Lagid ang naghatag
00:18:35kugnois,
00:18:35it's not me actually,
00:18:37but the entire Cebu,
00:18:38who helped me
00:18:39to be in the national team.
00:18:41Why you're not letting
00:18:41Mary Joy go
00:18:42or represent the country
00:18:43where in fact,
00:18:44she's the fastest,
00:18:45she got the record,
00:18:46she's so monot,
00:18:48so,
00:18:49eventually,
00:18:50was in the Olympics,
00:18:52qualified,
00:18:53pero,
00:18:54ang pag-qualify sa Olympics
00:18:55and the next challenge,
00:18:56pero later na lang siguro na,
00:18:58basta,
00:18:58taas taas,
00:18:59giyad ako ang journey
00:18:59to the Olympics
00:19:00and,
00:19:01the first,
00:19:03the moment
00:19:04na gusto ko
00:19:05mag-qualify
00:19:06sa Olympics
00:19:06nga nung ni Cam Ina
00:19:08was because
00:19:09the qualifying standard
00:19:11for the Olympics
00:19:13in Rio Olympics,
00:19:14gipa-ubsan nila,
00:19:15meaning slower,
00:19:17not the usual,
00:19:18nga,
00:19:18katusaona,
00:19:18namanggi class A,
00:19:19class B,
00:19:20nga qualifying time
00:19:21for marathon,
00:19:22in Rio,
00:19:23mango,
00:19:23there was a chance nga,
00:19:25gamay raang
00:19:26mga nag-qualify
00:19:27sa 2016 na Olympics,
00:19:30so,
00:19:30ilang gipa-ubsan,
00:19:32niya,
00:19:32pagkabaw na ako sa qualifying time
00:19:34and I was just
00:19:35three minutes slower,
00:19:36but the challenge was
00:19:37to hit the three minutes
00:19:39standard,
00:19:40three months na po
00:19:41ako ang i-prepare,
00:19:43then,
00:19:43di ba yan,
00:19:43na magic ang marathon
00:19:44na pwede ni mo makuha
00:19:46dahil yun
00:19:46in a matter of time,
00:19:48so,
00:19:48mo to ang challenge lang
00:19:49to really hit
00:19:50the qualifying time
00:19:51and next na po,
00:19:53like,
00:19:54a month,
00:19:54when I got the qualifying time
00:19:56sa Olympics,
00:19:58it was just a month
00:19:59or a month
00:20:00before the Olympics,
00:20:01nakasubmit na
00:20:02ang entire Philippines
00:20:03sa ilahang list
00:20:04na ipadala
00:20:05for the Olympics,
00:20:06niya,
00:20:07di na ko pwede nila
00:20:08daw atun and all,
00:20:09pero nakaabot pa ako
00:20:10ang time,
00:20:11so,
00:20:11katunapod ang another battle
00:20:13for Cebu
00:20:13to bring me,
00:20:14bring,
00:20:15nato,
00:20:15daghan kito sa headlines,
00:20:16bring Mary Joy to Rio,
00:20:18and then,
00:20:18yeah,
00:20:19I was there,
00:20:19and yeah,
00:20:20I became an Olympian
00:20:21because I crossed the finish line
00:20:22and yeah,
00:20:23bringing,
00:20:23pride
00:20:24to the country,
00:20:27yes,
00:20:27and to Cebu,
00:20:28to Cebu,
00:20:29yes,
00:20:29manang mapasalamaton
00:20:30kay ko sa Cebu
00:20:31and the Cebuanos,
00:20:33good.
00:20:34Ako ang takeaway,
00:20:35gira itong,
00:20:36anastrack said ko
00:20:37when you said
00:20:37na your aha moment
00:20:38is when you set the goal
00:20:40to be
00:20:41the marathon queen,
00:20:43no,
00:20:43but I also
00:20:44liked it
00:20:46when you said
00:20:47na we just don't stop
00:20:48where we are,
00:20:49no,
00:20:49so,
00:20:49upgrade na po na to
00:20:50ang ato ang why,
00:20:51so that our strategy
00:20:53will also be upgraded
00:20:54and that got you
00:20:55ultimately,
00:20:57no,
00:20:57to the Olympics.
00:20:58So now,
00:20:59for Matthew,
00:20:59aha manang imu ang aha moment
00:21:01na murag,
00:21:02I can do this.
00:21:03so basically,
00:21:07I never thought of
00:21:09C Games,
00:21:10actually,
00:21:10I never thought of
00:21:12Asian Games.
00:21:14when I was a kid,
00:21:16I only heard about
00:21:17Olympics,
00:21:18it was very nice
00:21:19to like hear
00:21:20Olympians
00:21:21doing this,
00:21:21doing that,
00:21:22achieving this,
00:21:23doing this,
00:21:24achieving that,
00:21:25it was very nice,
00:21:26but then,
00:21:26I never thought,
00:21:28I never had
00:21:28an aha moment
00:21:29where I can say,
00:21:32I can qualify
00:21:33for C Games.
00:21:34I was very fortunate
00:21:36to have
00:21:37a very good coach,
00:21:40a very ambitious one,
00:21:42to be exact.
00:21:43He wants us
00:21:45to be more,
00:21:46and I'm thankful
00:21:46for that.
00:21:48He sacrificed a lot,
00:21:49there's like
00:21:50politics in sport,
00:21:51just what she said.
00:21:54We've been there,
00:21:55we've done that,
00:21:56but we didn't
00:21:57stop fighting.
00:21:59It was very
00:22:00struggling,
00:22:02very tiring,
00:22:05as well.
00:22:06He,
00:22:07he fought for us,
00:22:09actually,
00:22:10Coach Andoy did.
00:22:12He put his name
00:22:14on the stage,
00:22:16like,
00:22:16he bet on his name,
00:22:18he'd say like,
00:22:20take me out
00:22:20of the national team
00:22:21if he can't qualify,
00:22:23but then,
00:22:23the numbers don't lie,
00:22:24that's what she said.
00:22:25To be honest,
00:22:27I'm very happy
00:22:28to be part
00:22:29of the national team,
00:22:30and to have got
00:22:31the C Games
00:22:33gold medal.
00:22:35It's the second one,
00:22:36I'm very thankful
00:22:37for that,
00:22:38for the second
00:22:39gold medal.
00:22:41To tell you honestly,
00:22:42it wasn't really easy.
00:22:45It was very nice
00:22:47to be here,
00:22:49but then,
00:22:49getting here
00:22:50is a different story.
00:22:53It's like,
00:22:53you don't see
00:22:54the hard work,
00:22:55you only see me
00:22:56in the podium,
00:22:57something like that.
00:22:59So basically,
00:23:00the aha moment
00:23:00is just,
00:23:01Coach Andoy pushing us,
00:23:03telling us
00:23:04to do more.
00:23:05You can do more,
00:23:06you can do more,
00:23:07push,
00:23:08and then,
00:23:09it's very different,
00:23:10and it's tiring,
00:23:12but it's good,
00:23:13and I'm thankful for it.
00:23:14the reason that
00:23:18this resonated
00:23:19with me,
00:23:21because I'm the kind
00:23:22of person,
00:23:23that's why
00:23:24I struck you,
00:23:24you're very goal-oriented,
00:23:27I'm the kind
00:23:27of person,
00:23:28it's the people
00:23:29around me
00:23:30who would see
00:23:31the potential
00:23:32first,
00:23:33and then,
00:23:34it's them
00:23:35who would have
00:23:36to push me there.
00:23:37It's because
00:23:38I'm obedient,
00:23:39so it would
00:23:43turn out
00:23:44that it's,
00:23:44that's why
00:23:45I gave appreciation
00:23:46for teachers,
00:23:47for mentors,
00:23:48for coaches
00:23:49in general,
00:23:50because I'm a product
00:23:51of their vision.
00:23:53They can tell
00:23:54that he can do this,
00:23:56and then they bring me there.
00:23:57Actually,
00:23:58sir,
00:23:58I thought I'd like to share
00:23:59with the Olympics,
00:24:02it was never in my mind,
00:24:03it was so good,
00:24:05because the Olympics,
00:24:06no one has done it
00:24:07in my sports,
00:24:08in the marathon,
00:24:09so it's like,
00:24:10no one has done it,
00:24:14no one has qualified it.
00:24:15And you're from Cebu.
00:24:16Yeah,
00:24:17I'm from Cebu,
00:24:17so when my coach
00:24:19told me,
00:24:20it's the same,
00:24:21I knew Coach Andoy,
00:24:22and they were training
00:24:23with my coach also,
00:24:25it was actually my coach
00:24:26who aimed for that.
00:24:27We will try to qualify
00:24:29for the Olympics,
00:24:30because the qualifying
00:24:31standard is like this,
00:24:32I'm a kid,
00:24:33I'm a kid,
00:24:33I'm a kid,
00:24:34I'm a kid,
00:24:34I'm a kid,
00:24:34I'm a kid,
00:24:34I'm a kid,
00:24:34I'm a kid,
00:24:35so I'm a kid,
00:24:36but that time,
00:24:37seriously,
00:24:38so I have to really,
00:24:40I really have to,
00:24:41to put that in my heart,
00:24:44na gusto sag kumukwalify,
00:24:45kaya kung ang ako rang coach,
00:24:46ang gusto mo kwalify niya,
00:24:47di li ko,
00:24:48so di igin may magkatando.
00:24:50So we have to really work
00:24:51as a team,
00:24:52so when he told me,
00:24:53nga niya,
00:24:54kaya yin ko,
00:24:54kaya di ay,
00:24:55nga rito,
00:24:55di li si bu,
00:24:56so we work on getting a nice circle,
00:25:01a community that would help me,
00:25:02because we really need a,
00:25:04it would take a village,
00:25:06to be in the Olympics,
00:25:08so I'm not part of the national team,
00:25:11I don't have the resources,
00:25:13nga maka-training diod,
00:25:15so ang among gibuhat,
00:25:16with the good people in Cebu,
00:25:17private companies supported me,
00:25:19I trained in Japan for three months,
00:25:22and then,
00:25:23I used my title,
00:25:25of winning the Milo Marathon,
00:25:27that time,
00:25:272015,
00:25:29nga,
00:25:30ako ginang nihangyo sa Milo,
00:25:32na,
00:25:32pwede ari ato ang,
00:25:34ari ipadala ang Marathon King and Queen,
00:25:36kaya it's a qualifying standard for Olympics,
00:25:38and I would try to hit the qualifying standard for the Olympics,
00:25:41it's a strategic gap on it,
00:25:42on a,
00:25:42and good thing that they work on my,
00:25:46panagsara ka,
00:25:47yun ng some of the companies,
00:25:49they're really into,
00:25:50aiming to helping,
00:25:52Filipino athletes,
00:25:53achieve their dreams,
00:25:55gyud,
00:25:55so,
00:25:56when I approach,
00:25:57kanam,
00:25:57salamat kita sa Milo,
00:25:58no,
00:25:59kaya daghan gin silang na-build na champion,
00:26:00so,
00:26:01kani,
00:26:01and then glad,
00:26:02fortunately,
00:26:03they approved it,
00:26:04so I prepare for the Boston Marathon,
00:26:07and have to,
00:26:08to,
00:26:08kuan kay mo,
00:26:09onang malanggid siyang masulod po,
00:26:10April,
00:26:10and then the last qualifying,
00:26:13for the marathon,
00:26:14for the 2016 Rio Olympics,
00:26:16would be May 31,
00:26:172016,
00:26:18so April na,
00:26:20so three months ko,
00:26:21and then challenge pa gina to sir,
00:26:23January,
00:26:23nangita pa kong sponsor,
00:26:24nga makasupport sa akong training,
00:26:26and gladly,
00:26:27I had Mother Ace,
00:26:28with the help of the Borimayo Brothers,
00:26:30gyud,
00:26:31February,
00:26:33March,
00:26:34April,
00:26:34dito ko sa Japan,
00:26:36and,
00:26:36nindot kayo ang connection,
00:26:382014,
00:26:39naka-training ko,
00:26:40for 10 days in Japan,
00:26:41exchange youth seminar,
00:26:43natago na ko ang calling card,
00:26:45in,
00:26:45ano,
00:26:45di kaimportante ang calling card,
00:26:46no,
00:26:46gitray lang na ko,

00:34:10into that.
00:34:11So,
00:34:11my question for,
00:34:12for Matthew is,
00:34:14do you think Cebu is producing,
00:34:17ka ng,
00:34:18more endurance,
00:34:19athletes?
00:34:21Um,
00:34:22actually,
00:34:23based from what I see lang,
00:34:25there's a lot of,
00:34:27uh,
00:34:27running competitions,
00:34:29like fun runs,
00:34:30like,
00:34:31mostly,
00:34:32every weekend,
00:34:33I hear a fun run happening in the north,
00:34:35south,
00:34:36here in the city,
00:34:37like,
00:34:38it's a lot,
00:34:39so,
00:34:40I think there's a lot of people,
00:34:42who are really,
00:34:42trying,
00:34:43um,
00:34:44endurance sports,
00:34:46and,
00:34:46for,
00:34:47multi-sport as well,
00:34:49um,
00:34:49I'm not really sure,
00:34:52because,
00:34:52I barely hear names,
00:34:55so,
00:34:56it's very difficult,
00:34:57to find people,
00:34:58from Cebu,
00:35:00so,
00:35:01it's different,
00:35:02for multi-sport,
00:35:03but for,
00:35:03um,
00:35:04for running,
00:35:05it's,
00:35:05it's a lot,
00:35:07there's,
00:35:07a lot of people,
00:35:08who are engaging,
00:35:10in running here,
00:35:11in Cebu,
00:35:12it's a lot of fun races,
00:35:13so,
00:35:14at least,
00:35:14there are avenues,
00:35:16no,
00:35:16for them,
00:35:17to be able,
00:35:17for people,
00:35:18to be able,
00:35:19to see,
00:35:20just like,
00:35:20how the two of you,
00:35:21discovered,
00:35:22also,
00:35:22your strengths,
00:35:23this is what I can do,
00:35:25and that's already,
00:35:25the start,
00:35:26so,
00:35:27now,
00:35:27we're going,
00:35:27back to Katongkon,
00:35:28because my next question,
00:35:30actually,
00:35:30is,
00:35:31how did,
00:35:31competing,
00:35:33in the Olympics,
00:35:35change,
00:35:36your perspective,
00:35:38in sports,
00:35:40um,
00:35:42how did,
00:35:44Olympics,
00:35:44so,
00:35:45actually,
00:35:46after crossing,
00:35:48Olympics,
00:35:48for me,
00:35:49is not just about,
00:35:50crossing the finish line,
00:35:51no,
00:35:51it's how you become,
00:35:53after crossing it,
00:35:54because,
00:35:54running in the Olympics,
00:35:56was actually,
00:35:57the result,
00:35:58na,
00:35:58of all the hard works,
00:36:00that I've done,
00:36:01for the past years,
00:36:03so,
00:36:04um,
00:36:05the work,
00:36:06is the process,
00:36:07so,
00:36:08uh,
00:36:08getting into,
00:36:09in the Olympics,
00:36:10kay,
00:36:10murabag-ingon,
00:36:12na,
00:36:13mauna ni siya,
00:36:13ang result,
00:36:14mauna ni siya,
00:36:15ang reward,
00:36:15after all,
00:36:16that I've done,
00:36:17no,
00:36:17in running,
00:36:18ang,
00:36:19ang,
00:36:19ang pinaka-importante,
00:36:21or the perspective,
00:36:22in this,
00:36:22kay,
00:36:23you're not gonna win,
00:36:25every races,
00:36:26you're,
00:36:26you're not gonna win,
00:36:28in every competition,
00:36:29I,
00:36:29I failed many times,
00:36:31I,
00:36:31I,
00:36:32I did not win,
00:36:33many times,
00:36:34kay,
00:36:34makita man good sa tao,
00:36:35ah,
00:36:36ka nang,
00:36:36sige kong kadaog,
00:36:38pag,
00:36:39kumpit ko,
00:36:39ka na,
00:36:40but behind that,
00:36:41daghan kayo,
00:36:41kung mga,
00:36:42kanang low moments,
00:36:44giyod nga,
00:36:44wana ko,
00:36:44na kuha akong mga target times,
00:36:47kaning,
00:36:47akong rank,
00:36:49kanang,
00:36:49ma-injury ka,
00:36:50kanang,
00:36:53injured ka,
00:36:53that you really have to take a rest,
00:36:56to take a break,
00:36:56but dili ka kaya mag-break,
00:36:58kay napakagi-preparan na run,
00:37:00you have to really focus on,
00:37:02sige pa ning kamutan,
00:37:03nga maayo ka,
00:37:04so more on ka na,
00:37:05and then the perspective nga,
00:37:07kanang,
00:37:08how you see things,
00:37:09there's purpose for everything,
00:37:10you failed because,
00:37:12maybe,
00:37:13naan gin na sir na,
00:37:14I have tried it nga,
00:37:16basi ni daku na akong ulo,
00:37:17because the turning point,
00:37:19some of the athletes nga,
00:37:20wala gin ni lahutay into the national team,
00:37:23because when they hit a certain,
00:37:24um,
00:37:25trophy,
00:37:28they tend to forget nga,
00:37:30giunsa nila pag sugod,
00:37:31so,
00:37:32Mary Joy Tabal now,
00:37:33is more on beyond the medals,
00:37:35and the rewards I had,
00:37:37uh,
00:37:37more than the Olympics,
00:37:39it's now the,
00:37:40nanako sa stage of paying forward,
00:37:43nga,
00:37:43how can I better serve my community,
00:37:46how can I inspire more young,
00:37:47athletes to,
00:37:49uh,
00:37:49to dream about the Olympics,
00:37:51kay,
00:37:51na kaya gani nako nga,
00:37:53I'm from,
00:37:54I'm from Barangay Guba,
00:37:55I don't have those resources nga,
00:37:57naan nila karun,
00:37:58better na gani ang sports,
00:38:00Philippine sports karun kay,
00:38:02uh,
00:38:02there are plenty of,
00:38:03uh,
00:38:03private companies,
00:38:04who really support na,
00:38:05diba,
00:38:06from swimming,
00:38:07to bike,
00:38:07to running,
00:38:08to other sports,
00:38:09daghan nakaayo ang mo support,
00:38:11how much more karun,
00:38:12the support is there,
00:38:13the parents are very,
00:38:15very supportive,
00:38:16kay,
00:38:16ako,
00:38:16I,
00:38:17I,
00:38:17I very,
00:38:18I,
00:38:18I,
00:38:18ambiguous of those athletes nga,
00:38:21the parents are there,
00:38:22kay,
00:38:23I don't have that,
00:38:24so,
00:38:25kanang,
00:38:26you are very fortunate,
00:38:28you have all this,
00:38:29and why not,
00:38:30it's just a matter of,
00:38:32aiming the bigger,
00:38:33so,
00:38:33ang ako raging gibuhat,
00:38:35you have,
00:38:35uh,
00:38:36do it step by step,
00:38:37how do I get to the Olympics,
00:38:38so,
00:38:39naagid na yung hagdan,
00:38:40no,
00:38:40di ba,
00:38:40pwede mo tikang diretsyo dito,
00:38:42you have to set on,
00:38:44uh,
00:38:44have to compete on this,
00:38:46and get this,
00:38:47so,
00:38:47it's not more on the,
00:38:49it's a long term,
00:38:50marathon,
00:38:51and Olympics,
00:38:52it's a long term goal,
00:38:53it's a long term process,
00:38:54and in order to be there,
00:38:55you have to get through,
00:38:56this kaneng gagmay nga step,
00:38:58so,
00:38:58step by step,
00:38:59kilometer to kilometer,
00:39:00until you get to the finish line,
00:39:02so,
00:39:03there's a plenty,
00:39:04a bumpy road,
00:39:05gyud,
00:39:06ang marathon,
00:39:06kung nga kundyug ka,
00:39:07kay,
00:39:08from start,
00:39:09kinalan ka balo,
00:39:10nagig ka,
00:39:10how do you want to see yourself,
00:39:11on the finish line,
00:39:13victorious,
00:39:14unsaman,
00:39:14so,
00:39:14kung nag aim ka,
00:39:15mudaog ka,
00:39:16mudaog,
00:39:16gyud ka,
00:39:17no matter your performance,
00:39:18gyud,
00:39:18kay,
00:39:19dili ko,
00:39:20muapil,
00:39:20I won't be in the starting line,
00:39:22without knowing,
00:39:23unsa akong gusto sa finish line,
00:39:25so,
00:39:25naagid na,
00:39:26di ni mo matag-antanan,
00:39:27there's a plenty of uphills,
00:39:29and downhills,
00:39:30sometimes,
00:39:31makahon na ako,
00:39:31of wanting to quit,
00:39:33detour mo,
00:39:34na siyang sa dalang,
00:39:35gyud mo,
00:39:35detour ko mo,
00:39:36turning point na ko,
00:39:37kay,
00:39:37di kaya,
00:39:38naagid na ang mga times,
00:39:39kay dilimanta,
00:39:40super human,
00:39:41gyud,
00:39:41no,
00:39:41ng,
00:39:42one thing that could,
00:39:43really,
00:39:44lead me to the finish line,
00:39:45is my ultimate goal,
00:39:46why,
00:39:47why I started,
00:39:47why I run,
00:39:48why,
00:39:49why I'm doing this,
00:39:50nga,
00:39:50no,
00:39:50akong mong pakasakitan,
00:39:51akong self,
00:39:52when I run the Olympics,
00:39:54or actually,
00:39:54it was the most challenging run,
00:39:56that I had,
00:39:56because I'm not running for myself,
00:39:58I'm running for the country,
00:39:59I'm running for,
00:40:01for the Philippines,
00:40:02to be in the Olympics,
00:40:03kay,
00:40:03imagine,
00:40:04nag,
00:40:05nag try ko,
00:40:06the pressure that I had,
00:40:07getting into the Boston,
00:40:09to the Canada,
00:40:10and then a month,
00:40:11fighting to be in the Rio Olympics,
00:40:13so,
00:40:14I have no time,
00:40:16to really rest,
00:40:17continue sa con-training,
00:40:18and then,
00:40:19no matter my pain,
00:40:20during the run,
00:40:21I was running at 12 noon,
00:40:24piting inita,
00:40:25and,
00:40:26there were actually,
00:40:2624 women,
00:40:28marathoners,
00:40:28who quit the marathon,
00:40:29during their event,
00:40:30kay,
00:40:31nag-crumbs na giyod,
00:40:32grabe ang init sa Brazil,
00:40:34grabe ang init sa Olympics,
00:40:35I did not prepare,
00:40:36for that certain,
00:40:38weather giyod,
00:40:39then,
00:40:39part of me was,
00:40:41ano,
00:40:41di ko pwede mo hunong,
00:40:42anihunong gaya sila,
00:40:43they stopped,
00:40:44because,
00:40:44they could no longer,
00:40:45take the,
00:40:46kuan,
00:40:47so,
00:40:47the last,
00:40:48nagid moment nga,
00:40:49last 3 kilometers,
00:40:50nag-gunit yun ko sa akong left breast,
00:40:52sir,
00:40:52kaya,
00:40:52I could no longer breathe through my nose,
00:40:55every time I breathe through my nose,
00:40:56tanan,
00:40:57crumbs mo gawa,
00:40:58so,
00:40:58I was running,
00:40:59the last 3 kilometers,
00:41:00I was running,
00:41:01through my mouth,
00:41:03so,
00:41:03then,
00:41:04my,
00:41:05other leg was crumbing already,
00:41:08so,
00:41:08I ran through it,
00:41:09and crossed the finish line,
00:41:10and,
00:41:11nag-wellchair gig ko,
00:41:12so,
00:41:12kanatanan,
00:41:13wala na,
00:41:14moana sila nga,
00:41:15kanang,
00:41:16suskuan rana,
00:41:17oi,
00:41:18kanang,
00:41:19urabag,
00:41:21kanabang,
00:41:21not everyone would feel what I felt during the time,
00:41:25kay,
00:41:25dili nila dala ako ang self at the time,
00:41:28but I,
00:41:28I finished,
00:41:29I could have stopped,
00:41:31I could have quit,
00:41:32I could have,
00:41:33kay,
00:41:34save,
00:41:34muraguin ko,
00:41:35this would be my last,
00:41:36ang ako nalang ginaw na nito,
00:41:38okay,
00:41:38bahala lang,
00:41:39unsay ako ang finish,
00:41:40basta,
00:41:41makross lang na ako ang finish line,
00:41:42and,
00:41:43become an Olympian,
00:41:44for the Filipino people,
00:41:46maskin pag,
00:41:47this would be my last run,
00:41:48because,
00:41:48ako naging take risk,
00:41:50I could,
00:41:50ako naging imagine akong self,
00:41:52na pwede ko mag-collapse,
00:41:53I could have,
00:41:54died,
00:41:55yun,
00:41:55kay,
00:41:56ako ginggi risk,
00:41:57sir,
00:41:57I have,
00:41:58monot ako ang last na mga strategy,
00:42:01nga to cross the finish line,
00:42:02yun nga,
00:42:03na-collapse na ako on my first 10K,
00:42:05I wouldn't collapse on my first Olympics,
00:42:08so,
00:42:08maragay ito'y drive na ako,
00:42:09nag-finish at ito,
00:42:11so,
00:42:12mauna na yung past,
00:42:13murag decade of running,
00:42:14so,
00:42:15di rin ako,
00:42:15bahala lang mo,
00:42:15retire ko after,
00:42:16basta,
00:42:17I've reached the Olympics,
00:42:19katogit sir.
00:42:20so,
00:42:21si MJ have actually mentioned about heartbreaks,
00:42:24disappointments,
00:42:25even pain,
00:42:26nga?
00:42:27So,
00:42:28ikaw,
00:42:28Matthew,
00:42:29how do you,
00:42:30because this is also for our audience,
00:42:32for them to get to have the mindset,
00:42:34so,
00:42:35how do you deal with,
00:42:36disappointing days,
00:42:39or painful moments,
00:42:42or heartbreaking moments,
00:42:45how do you get past those?
00:42:47So,
00:42:48basically,
00:42:49the latest heartbreak was,
00:42:52before C Games,
00:42:54when we had the qualifying,
00:42:57they told us,
00:42:59like,
00:42:59they would remove a few athletes,
00:43:01to bring to Thailand,
00:43:04and then,
00:43:05I was,
00:43:06I heard that my name,
00:43:08was on the bottom,
00:43:09like,
00:43:10bottom list,
00:43:11and,
00:43:12it felt heavy,
00:43:14it felt,
00:43:15disappointing,
00:43:16that,
00:43:17working so hard,
00:43:19just,
00:43:20to see,
00:43:21or like,
00:43:22hear your name,
00:43:24on the bottom of the list,
00:43:25and then,
00:43:27it's,
00:43:29it's just,
00:43:30heartbreaking,
00:43:31actually,
00:43:32to like,
00:43:33feel disappointed,
00:43:34and that,
00:43:35but then,
00:43:36Coach Andoy,
00:43:37still,
00:43:37told me,
00:43:39you still have,
00:43:40a few more days,
00:43:41to,
00:43:42bow it,
00:43:44so,
00:43:44I just started thinking,
00:43:47C Games,
00:43:48C Games,
00:43:49C Games,
00:43:49C Games,
00:43:50so,
00:43:51I just wanted to push,
00:43:53I just wanted to know,
00:43:55what I can do,
00:43:58if I can't qualify,
00:43:59then,
00:44:00that's it,
00:44:01for me,
00:44:01if,
00:44:03I can't do it,
00:44:03then,
00:44:04that's it,
00:44:04for me,
00:44:06but then,
00:44:07at least,
00:44:07I tried,
00:44:08I pushed,
00:44:09so,
00:44:10what was,
00:44:11what's on my mind,
00:44:12that time,
00:44:12was,
00:44:14the sacrifices,
00:44:15behind,
00:44:16all the hard work,
00:44:17that I did,
00:44:18it wasn't just me,
00:44:19it was my coaches,
00:44:20my friends,
00:44:21especially,
00:44:22my family,
00:44:23I sacrificed,
00:44:24I sacrificed,
00:44:24I sacrificed,
00:44:24also,
00:44:25for my,
00:44:26studies,
00:44:27I,
00:44:28was absent,
00:44:29for like,
00:44:29a few days,
00:44:31few weeks,
00:44:31actually,
00:44:32so,
00:44:33I was thinking,
00:44:33it would be disappointed,
00:44:35to,
00:44:36skip,
00:44:37to sacrifice,
00:44:39all that,
00:44:39and then,
00:44:40not get there,
00:44:41so,
00:44:42I just,
00:44:43pushed myself,
00:44:45to do more,
00:44:46to do more,
00:44:47than the other guys,
00:44:48to push more,
00:44:49than them,
00:44:50and,
00:44:51fortunately,
00:44:52I was able,
00:44:54to qualify,
00:44:56when they,
00:44:57when we had the meeting,
00:44:59the final meeting,
00:45:00for the discussion,
00:45:01I was so happy,
00:45:03that my name,
00:45:05was on the list,
00:45:06and,
00:45:07I just started,
00:45:09to thank myself,
00:45:10for not giving up,
00:45:11because,
00:45:12actually,
00:45:13things happen,
00:45:15differently,
00:45:16but,
00:45:17what you can do,
00:45:18or what you can control,
00:45:19is how you,
00:45:20perceive it,
00:45:22how you react,
00:45:24so,
00:45:24when,
00:45:25when things are down,
00:45:26I always look,
00:45:27on the brighter side,
00:45:29I always look,
00:45:31on the people,
00:45:32behind me,
00:45:33pushing me,
00:45:33to be more,
00:45:35and,
00:45:36I'm very grateful,
00:45:37for them,
00:45:37because,
00:45:39it's,
00:45:39not just a village,
00:45:41right now,
00:45:41it's actually,
00:45:42different cities,
00:45:43who are supporting me,
00:45:44sponsors from Manila,
00:45:47friends from,
00:45:48all over the world,
00:45:49my family,
00:45:50my parents,
00:45:51from the US,
00:45:52they sacrificed a lot,
00:45:54and then,
00:45:55basically,
00:45:56that's my motivation,
00:45:57to just push more,
00:45:59I just think about,
00:46:00the sacrifices,
00:46:01that other people did,
00:46:03to help me get there,
00:46:05and,
00:46:06when you,
00:46:07start doing things,
00:46:09not just for yourself,
00:46:10but for other people,
00:46:11you'll reach,
00:46:13greater heights,
00:46:13so,
00:46:14so,
00:46:14it's not the situation,
00:46:16but your reaction,
00:46:18to the situation,
00:46:19that would set,
00:46:20the final,
00:46:22difference,
00:46:22whatever that reaction is,
00:46:24there's a question,
00:46:26there's a question,
00:46:26actually,
00:46:26earlier from,
00:46:28the audience,
00:46:29and then,
00:46:32she wanted to ask,
00:46:34her name is actually,
00:46:35Christelle,
00:46:35she wanted to ask,
00:46:37what are the,
00:46:39rituals,
00:46:40or,
00:46:41preparations,
00:46:42or the things,
00:46:43that you tell yourself,
00:46:45every time,
00:46:46you are in the,
00:46:47starting line,
00:46:49eyes on the goal,
00:46:52you won't join the race,
00:46:55without anything,
00:46:56or,
00:46:57for,
00:46:57or,
00:46:58reason,
00:46:58why you're joining,
00:46:59if you don't have a goal,
00:47:00so,
00:47:01focus on the goal,
00:47:02pero,
00:47:02nalang ko,
00:47:03yung tip siguro,
00:47:04sa oba,
00:47:04no,
00:47:05because,
00:47:05makita nila,
00:47:06nga,
00:47:07every competition,
00:47:08that I join,
00:47:08gacompete,
00:47:09like,
00:47:10giving my 100%,
00:47:11every time,
00:47:12no,
00:47:12no,
00:47:13may,
00:47:13every time,
00:47:14I join a run,
00:47:15sometimes,
00:47:16mananghit,
00:47:17pagig ko,
00:47:17ano,
00:47:17ni coach,
00:47:18kay,
00:47:19there's,
00:47:19time,
00:47:20when your student,
00:47:21mangod,
00:47:21sometimes,
00:47:22challenging,
00:47:23financially,
00:47:23no,
00:47:24so,
00:47:24coach,
00:47:24can I join this run,
00:47:26because,
00:47:27I know,
00:47:28kaya na ko,
00:47:29ni Daogon,
00:47:29because,
00:47:30na,
00:47:30na,
00:47:30kaya na mag-inimo,
00:47:31sa'y mong self,
00:47:32no,
00:47:32niya,
00:47:33as much as,
00:47:34my coach,
00:47:34wanted to limit,
00:47:35my,
00:47:35kanang,
00:47:36mga,
00:47:37commercial races,
00:47:38naging times,
00:47:39kamuhang,
00:47:39yuk,
00:47:40niya,
00:47:40to run this,
00:47:41but,
00:47:42moana na siya,
00:47:42okay,
00:47:43you can join,
00:47:43but you have to,
00:47:44do your training,
00:47:46a day before,
00:47:46or,
00:47:48kanang,
00:47:49nagi times nga,
00:47:50buhato na mo,
00:47:51ang training program na ko,
00:47:53during the run,
00:47:53so,
00:47:54nagi times nga,
00:47:54if,
00:47:55kanira ako ang target time,
00:47:56you really have to focus on,
00:47:58just having that,
00:47:59kay,
00:48:00kung every time,
00:48:01every competition,
00:48:02or commercial races nga,
00:48:03kung apilan,
00:48:03100% ko,
00:48:04per me,
00:48:05the recovery would take long,
00:48:06long distance running,
00:48:08would,
00:48:08give you time to,
00:48:10really replenish everything,
00:48:11that you,
00:48:12you give ba,
00:48:13so,
00:48:13kinanglan,
00:48:14you have,
00:48:15in marathon,
00:48:15what also helped me,
00:48:17is how to control yourself,
00:48:19even though,
00:48:19you're the fastest runner already,
00:48:21you know,
00:48:22kung,
00:48:22kung tanaw ni mo,
00:48:23moana gina si coach,
00:48:24kung tanaw ni mo,
00:48:25layo na ang naglitsunod ni mo,
00:48:27ayaw na,
00:48:27og exert,
00:48:28og maayo,
00:48:30sa imong pacing,
00:48:31focus on the,
00:48:32training pacing,
00:48:34because,
00:48:34madugay na noon ta,
00:48:36og recover,
00:48:36so,
00:48:37ang resulta na,
00:48:39it will compensate,
00:48:40some of our trainings,
00:48:41and,
00:48:42yeah,
00:48:42and it's not necessary,
00:48:43and it's not necessary,
00:48:45and it's not,
00:48:45part of the,
00:48:47plan,
00:48:47so,
00:48:48maauna na,
00:48:48being an athlete,
00:48:50also means,
00:48:50you have to really,
00:48:52learn how to control yourself,
00:48:53kay,
00:48:54kanabitaw sa starting line,
00:48:55palang natuusay,
00:48:56with the adrenaline,
00:48:57na,
00:48:58push da yun,
00:48:59and then,
00:48:59wak ni mo,
00:49:00gipa minaw,
00:49:01imuhang,
00:49:01uy,
00:49:02wak pa man ko,
00:49:02nakadagan,
00:49:03anina pace,
00:49:04so,
00:49:04masayup na da yun,
00:49:06that's one thing,
00:49:07that,
00:49:07na-dispense na imong,
00:49:08energy,
00:49:09unnecessarily,
00:49:10yes,
00:49:11one ako ang tip for,
00:49:12some athletes,
00:49:13or runners nga,
00:49:14nagsugod karoon nga,
00:49:16nga naman nga,
00:49:16on a certain distance,
00:49:17pag sugod pa lang,
00:49:19kalit naman lang ko,
00:49:20og stop,
00:49:21mulakaw na da yun,
00:49:22and it,
00:49:23ah,
00:49:24an advice for you,
00:49:26kung wala pa ka nakatry,
00:49:27anina pacing during your training,
00:49:29never try it on the race,
00:49:31sa starting line,
00:49:32yun,
00:49:32labi na,
00:49:33adrenaline,
00:49:33ay,
00:49:33kusog kaya siya ni Dagan,
00:49:34ni Dagan sag ka,
00:49:35for the picture lang,
00:49:37and then,
00:49:37there's a possibility,
00:49:39yun,
00:49:40na certain level,
00:49:41nihit na gani ka sa imong,
00:49:43100%,
00:49:43mulakaw gika,
00:49:45because it will really take time,
00:49:46for you to really recover,
00:49:48so,
00:49:48lakaw ka,
00:49:49get your heart rate back,
00:49:50and then,
00:49:50di hapaka makasugod,
00:49:51pero guba na,
00:49:53unless kung,
00:49:54un sa imuhang,
00:49:55at the starting line,
00:49:56yun,
00:49:5680% lang gina,
00:49:58sa imuhang usual sa,
00:49:59you have to really,
00:50:00especially if,
00:50:00waka ka warm up properly,
00:50:02kay,
00:50:02karoon gud,
00:50:03ang mga runs ka ron,
00:50:04naghan na kaayos,
00:50:05sa starting line,
00:50:06na nanatanan,
00:50:07so,
00:50:07it won't give you time,
00:50:08good to properly warmed up,
00:50:10so,
00:50:11managamito na to,
00:50:12na importante,
00:50:13at the start of the run,
00:50:15properly warmed up,
00:50:16gika,
00:50:16if waka naka warm up,
00:50:17then control yourself,
00:50:18gud,
00:50:19so,
00:50:20abolish.
00:50:20I can tell that,
00:50:21you are very,
00:50:22strategic,
00:50:23no?
00:50:24Yeah.
00:50:25Which is,
00:50:25important,
00:50:26right?
00:50:26Yeah.
00:50:26And,
00:50:27on a corporate standpoint,
00:50:29kanang,
00:50:29there's,
00:50:30I think he's an author,
00:50:31he said,
00:50:32kanang,
00:50:33one of the seven habits,
00:50:34ba?
00:50:34You begin with the end in mind.
00:50:35So,
00:50:35in your case,
00:50:36starting point,
00:50:38that's the goal.
00:50:39Maunang,
00:50:39grabe,
00:50:40so,
00:50:40kumadisappoint,
00:50:41if I won't get my,
00:50:43goal,
00:50:44okay?
00:50:45Sakto na kung strategy,
00:50:46manang,
00:50:47question na din ko,
00:50:48asa ko nasayup,
00:50:49like,
00:50:50which brings me to,
00:50:52the question for you,
00:50:53which is,
00:50:54still from,
00:50:55Christelle,
00:50:56no?
00:50:56She wanted to know,
00:50:59kanang,
00:50:59how do you deal with,
00:51:01kanang,
00:51:02disappointments,
00:51:03no?
00:51:03Kanang,
00:51:04you've already set your mind,
00:51:06no nga,
00:51:06in this particular race,
00:51:07this is my goal,
00:51:08or this is my time.
00:51:10And then,
00:51:11you did not achieve,
00:51:13the target.
00:51:14So,
00:51:15basically,
00:51:15for me,
00:51:16the goal is always,
00:51:18just for myself.
00:51:20I don't,
00:51:21if the other guys,
00:51:22are running faster,
00:51:23my goal is to,
00:51:25catch up to them,
00:51:26but,
00:51:27if I can't,
00:51:29but I will try.
00:51:31My,
00:51:31my goal,
00:51:33always,
00:51:34for the race,
00:51:35is,
00:51:36to,
00:51:37push more,
00:51:39see what I can do,
00:51:41to try,
00:51:43won't be,
00:51:44to not be afraid,
00:51:45of trying things,
00:51:47of trying things,
00:51:47but with,
00:51:48risk assessment.
00:51:49So,
00:51:50when I see the guys,
00:51:51in front,
00:51:53I just,
00:51:54tell myself,
00:51:55that,
00:51:55I wanna,
00:51:56catch up to them,
00:51:57I wanna be more,
00:51:58I wanna catch up,
00:51:59I wanna,
00:52:00speed up more,
00:52:01and get to the front,
00:52:03but then,
00:52:04I would also think,
00:52:05that,
00:52:06if I can't,
00:52:07push it that much,
00:52:09and then,
00:52:10I would just,
00:52:12disappoint my country,
00:52:14and not finish,
00:52:15I would rather just,
00:52:17maintain,
00:52:18my pace,
00:52:20and then,
00:52:20just focus,
00:52:22on,
00:52:23the people,
00:52:24supporting me.
00:52:26If I can't,
00:52:27catch up to the front,
00:52:29it's just,
00:52:30at least I tried,
00:52:32that's the point.
00:52:33If I get disappointed,
00:52:34at myself,
00:52:35for not catching the front,
00:52:37I just tell myself,
00:52:38that,
00:52:39I did it for me anyways.
00:52:41I'm not doing it,
00:52:42for,
00:52:43the pictures,
00:52:44the social media,
00:52:45I'm doing it for myself.
00:52:47So,
00:52:48at the end of the day,
00:52:50I'm happy,
00:52:51because of me,
00:52:53and that's all.
00:52:54By the way,
00:52:55Crystal,
00:52:55what was that again?
00:52:56Balance,
00:52:57personal life and your career.
00:52:59Ah,
00:52:59okay.
00:53:00I think,
00:53:01because we're,
00:53:02this is really,
00:53:03a very good conversation,
00:53:04and we're,
00:53:04running out of time,
00:53:06but I think,
00:53:07it's also a good question,
00:53:08for both of you,
00:53:09to answer.
00:53:10You're very successful,
00:53:12you have a,
00:53:13very successful career,
00:53:15and,
00:53:16you also have a personal life,
00:53:18to manage.
00:53:18How do you balance,
00:53:20both?
00:53:20We'll start with you,
00:53:21Matthew.
00:53:22I'm starting first.
00:53:24So,
00:53:24basically,
00:53:26I balance everything out.
00:53:28Well,
00:53:29I don't usually plan,
00:53:30that's the thing,
00:53:32because,
00:53:32like,
00:53:33I'm not that strategic,
00:53:35sorry.
00:53:35I'm not that strategic,
00:53:36sorry.
00:53:39I just balance,
00:53:41school and training,
00:53:43and the time for my family,
00:53:45like,
00:53:46I sacrificed some,
00:53:48when my family wants,
00:53:49to go outing,
00:53:50but then,
00:53:50I have training,
00:53:52I tell them,
00:53:53I'm sorry,
00:53:54I can't,
00:53:55I have to do this,
00:53:56but then,
00:53:57when school starts,
00:53:58to like,
00:53:59cramp up,
00:54:00I tell my coach,
00:54:02coach,
00:54:03this is a training,
00:54:04because I have projects due,
00:54:05I have an exam,
00:54:07this and that,
00:54:08I have enrollment.
00:54:09So,
00:54:10there's basically,
00:54:11like,
00:54:12proper time management,
00:54:14but then,
00:54:15you really have to,
00:54:17do,
00:54:17sacrifices,
00:54:19at the same time,
00:54:20because if you can't do it,
00:54:23then focus on the,
00:54:25like,
00:54:26manage your priorities,
00:54:27properly,
00:54:28because,
00:54:29it's very different,
00:54:31when you're doing,
00:54:32everything at once,
00:54:33I'm not,
00:54:34I don't have four hands,
00:54:36to deal with everything,
00:54:38I'm,
00:54:38I'm a human being too,
00:54:40I sacrifice,
00:54:41if I can't do that,
00:54:43at least,
00:54:43I can do this,
00:54:45and then,
00:54:45I'll do that later,
00:54:47something like that.
00:54:47So,
00:54:48you manage your time,
00:54:49you set the boundaries,
00:54:50and you,
00:54:51say no,
00:54:52when you have to say no,
00:54:53and say yes,
00:54:54when you have to say yes,
00:54:55and for MJ.
00:54:57Yeah,
00:54:57that's a good thing for math,
00:54:59no,
00:54:59he's really enjoying,
00:55:00being an athlete,
00:55:01at the same time,
00:55:03family time,
00:55:03good,
00:55:04so,
00:55:04if I only share,
00:55:06how do I balance,
00:55:08being an Olympian,
00:55:10good,
00:55:10it really takes,
00:55:11more time,
00:55:12actually,
00:55:13but,
00:55:13I have to set in mind,
00:55:15now,
00:55:15I have to give back,
00:55:18everything good,
00:55:19like,
00:55:20the opportunity,
00:55:21that was given to me,
00:55:22by the school,
00:55:23I really have to,
00:55:24give back,
00:55:25so,
00:55:25I have to represent,
00:55:26the school well,
00:55:27by,
00:55:28by being,
00:55:29I have to balance,
00:55:33studies,
00:55:34and at the same time,
00:55:35I'm training,
00:55:36no,
00:55:36so,
00:55:37that's the reason,
00:55:39wide,
00:55:40I,
00:55:41the offer,
00:55:41to finish another,
00:55:43the master's,
00:55:44degree,
00:55:46the master,
00:55:46no,
00:55:47meaning,
00:55:49good,
00:55:49go in school,
00:55:50at the same time,
00:55:50good,
00:55:50go in my academics,
00:55:52so,
00:55:52have to really give back,
00:55:54and at the same time,
00:55:55actually,
00:55:55sir,
00:55:55when during pandemic,
00:55:56nag-enroll,
00:55:58pag-DPA,
00:55:58so,
00:55:59I'm a doctorate,
00:56:00in public administration,
00:56:01now,

00:56:06athletic,
00:56:07koan,
00:56:08unsa ni ako,
00:56:08ang pag-e,
00:56:09elite athlete before,
00:56:11and now,
00:56:11being a,
00:56:12koan,
00:56:13working mom,
00:56:15so,
00:56:16working mom,
00:56:17yeah,
00:56:18I'm the current,
00:56:19officer in charge,
00:56:20in Mandawi City Sports Office,
00:56:21so,
00:56:22public service,
00:56:22actually,
00:56:23so,
00:56:24my training now,
00:56:25is more on,
00:56:26intentional,
00:56:27and more on,
00:56:29realistic,
00:56:30I don't train,
00:56:31like,
00:56:32before,
00:56:32katong,
00:56:33I was,
00:56:3420s pa,
00:56:35karoon,
00:56:36more on,
00:56:37koan,
00:56:37nag-each,
00:56:38what works on my current lifestyle,
00:56:40balancing work,
00:56:41motherhood,
00:56:42and at the same time,
00:56:44nag-each po na kong running,
00:56:46so,
00:56:46dili naging ko pareha sa unang,
00:56:48wala pag-each,
00:56:49koan,
00:56:50kahadluk,
00:56:50na ma,
00:56:51unsan ni dugay mo uli,
00:56:53karoon,
00:56:53more on,
00:56:54nanakoy time for my family,
00:56:56gyan,
00:56:56yeah,
00:56:57time for work,
00:56:58and at the same time,
00:57:00akong responsibilities as a mother,
00:57:02and a public servant,
00:57:03so,
00:57:03nag-each po na.
00:57:04Sige,
00:57:05so,
00:57:06I'm down to my last question,
00:57:07one each,
00:57:08for both of you,
00:57:09so,
00:57:09for Matt,
00:57:10kinang,
00:57:11what's next for you?
00:57:13What's your next goal this time?
00:57:15So,
00:57:16basically,
00:57:16we have two major games,
00:57:18this,
00:57:19this coming April,
00:57:20we have Asian Beach Games,
00:57:22I would very much,
00:57:23be happy to try and qualify for that one,
00:57:26and then we have Asian Games on,
00:57:28August,
00:57:30so,
00:57:30it's a very busy schedule,
00:57:31but before that,
00:57:33I also have this one in March,
00:57:35championships,
00:57:37in Hong Kong,
00:57:39I think,
00:57:40Hong Kong,
00:57:41though,
00:57:41Crystal.
00:57:41just in case you want to watch,
00:57:50continue,
00:57:50continue.
00:57:50So,
00:57:51just basically,
00:57:52that's it for me right now,
00:57:56but then,
00:57:56if there are more races,
00:57:58I would really love to join,
00:58:00especially local races here in Cebu,
00:58:02I would very much love to race in my hometown,
00:58:06because there's very few races for multi-sport here in the city,
00:58:12actually.
00:58:13So,
00:58:13yes,
00:58:13that's all.
00:58:14And,
00:58:15for MJ,
00:58:17you're the first Filipina Marathon Olympian,
00:58:21right?
00:58:22Aside from that,
00:58:23how do you want to be remembered?
00:58:28You're the first one.
00:58:28How do I want to be remembered?
00:58:38The services,
00:58:40or the values that I've shared,
00:58:41or
00:58:42Mary Joy,
00:58:44after becoming an Olympian,
00:58:46so,
00:58:47it's more,
00:58:47if there would be an invitation to share my journey,
00:58:52I would be very happy to share to everybody.
00:58:56It's not just,
00:58:57I don't want to be remembered,
00:58:58by the accomplishments that I had,
00:59:01the medals,
00:59:01the trophies,
00:59:02the records,
00:59:03and then,
00:59:05and then,
00:59:05he's the advantage of the internet.
00:59:09Yeah,
00:59:10advantage of the internet.
00:59:11But,
00:59:11it's more on,
00:59:13so,
00:59:14how do I start?
00:59:16How did I become an Olympian?
00:59:19My journey?
00:59:20How was,
00:59:21how did I overcome everything?
00:59:22How do I pay back?
00:59:26So,
00:59:26that's why,
00:59:27the grassroots program,
00:59:30so,
00:59:30I launched the grassroots sports development program in Mandawi last,
00:59:342024.
00:59:35So,
00:59:36after the Olympics,
00:59:40after being an athlete,
00:59:42it does not end there.
00:59:43So,
00:59:43it's more on,
00:59:45it's more on,
00:59:48making programs,
00:59:50sports programs,
00:59:51and palaces in the LGU,
00:59:53in Mandawi,
00:59:54and at the same time,
00:59:55giving opportunities to the athletes.
00:59:57Karun,
00:59:58with the partnership that I had,
01:00:00like,
01:00:01being,
01:00:01as an ambassador of a certain event,
01:00:05I was able to do that,
01:00:05I was able to do that,
01:00:06so,
01:00:09can I bring in some of my athletes?
01:00:11So,
01:00:12happy to share that,
01:00:15a 10-year-old runner,
01:00:16from our grassroots sports program in Mandawi,
01:00:19will be running with me in Taiwan this October.
01:00:22So,
01:00:22that would be,
01:00:23so,
01:00:23part of my,
01:00:24me,
01:00:25and in my program,
01:00:26is to expose,
01:00:27and let these grassroots runners experience,
01:00:30give them opportunity to explore,
01:00:32experience,
01:00:33and,
01:00:34learn some cultures from different country,
01:00:36ba?
01:00:36So,
01:00:36I'm more like,
01:00:37I'm more like,
01:00:37I'm more like,
01:00:38even though I'm no longer,
01:00:40compete,
01:00:41as competitive as before,
01:00:43but,
01:00:43I'm more like,
01:00:44I'm more like,
01:00:44I'm more like,
01:00:44I'm more like,
01:00:45it's more on,
01:00:46guiding,
01:00:46and helping these athletes dream,
01:00:48their dreams are valid,
01:00:50they too can achieve this,
01:00:52this,
01:00:53and that,
01:00:53so,
01:00:53would always say,
01:00:55sus,
01:00:55ako,
01:00:564'11 in height,
01:00:57I was in the Olympics,
01:00:58how was I able to achieve that?
01:01:00So,
01:01:00with the support that you have now,
01:01:02take advantage,
01:01:03take,
01:01:03ipang-grab,
01:01:04gina ng mga opportunities,
01:01:06and one thing that I could share,
01:01:08kung kaya,
01:01:09never say never,
01:01:10gyan,
01:01:10ayaw yung sigig ingon o gno,
01:01:11kung nai-opportunity,
01:01:12say yes,
01:01:13and then,
01:01:14unyan na na problema,
01:01:15on how to achieve,
01:01:16how to accomplish that,
01:01:17so,
01:01:18kung nai-hatag sa'yo mo,
01:01:19ha,
01:01:19okay,
01:01:19yes,
01:01:20pwede ka mura na ni,
01:01:21ah,
01:01:22sige,
01:01:22yes,
01:01:22sige,
01:01:23later na lang,
01:01:23siguro,
01:01:24kung di-gid kaya,
01:01:25maybe they would understand,
01:01:26but,
01:01:27kung,
01:01:28kung there's an opportunity,
01:01:29say yes,
01:01:30good,
01:01:30grab it,
01:01:31kay,
01:01:31not all opportunities will be given to you,
01:01:34and yes,
01:01:35nawala na ko sa ako,
01:01:36ang question,
01:01:37how to be remembered,
01:01:38ka na,
01:01:39Mary Joy,
01:01:40it's more on,
01:01:42kanang sharing your joy in running,
01:01:44run with joy,
01:01:46always,
01:01:46there's a joy in running,
01:01:47joy in sports,
01:01:49train with joy,
01:01:50so,
01:01:50importantly,
01:01:51you get to enjoy your training,
01:01:53kay,
01:01:54mawala masag yun atong purpose,
01:01:55no,
01:01:56sa running,
01:01:56magig ka magdugay,
01:01:57kung you're,
01:01:58if you're not enjoying it,
01:01:59if you're just,
01:02:00kanang na-push lang ka,
01:02:01because your parents,
01:02:02or your coach,
01:02:03want you to do this,
01:02:05it would be better,
01:02:06if you do it as a team,
01:02:08you also have,
01:02:09you also get to enjoy it,
01:02:10you love it,
01:02:11you're doing it,
01:02:12because,
01:02:14you're doing it as a team,
01:02:15and you're doing it for the country,
01:02:17so,
01:02:18kanang lang,
01:02:18mas dagan ko ma-inspire siguro,
01:02:20to,
01:02:21to become the next Olympian,
01:02:22to become,

01:02:28the,
01:02:28the shoes are improving,

01:02:32the nutrition are there,
01:02:33you get all the support,
01:02:35so,
01:02:35yeah,

01:02:37yeah,
01:02:37I'll see you on the road,

01:02:39so,

01:02:43because,
01:02:43there is Matthew in running,
01:02:45and there's also Joy in running,
01:02:47and then for Matthew in running,
