Welcome to Unified Consulting Solutions, where we work to simplify complexity and really amplify performance.
00:07
Have you ever felt like your projects are just constantly fighting these invisible headwinds?
00:11
You know, those small delays, little mistakes, tiny inefficiencies that by themselves don't seem like a big deal.
00:17
Well, today we're going to give you a special lens to see these hidden problems for exactly what they are.
00:22
The eight wastes of lean. And trust me, once you see them, you can't unsee them.
00:27
So let's just start with a really important question.
00:30
What if I told you that most projects are just filled with these hidden inefficiencies that are silently eating away at your time and your money?
00:38
These aren't just minor hiccups, you see.
00:41
They're systemic problems that have become so normal, we've pretty much stopped even noticing them.
00:46
So the key to fighting this has a name, Moda.
00:49
It's a foundational concept, comes straight out of the Toyota production system, and it's simple.
00:54
It means any activity that eats up resources, your time, materials, effort, but adds absolutely zero value from the customer's point of view.
01:01
Bottom line, if the customer isn't willing to pay for it, it's probably waste.
01:06
Okay, so to really get a handle on waste, we first have to define its opposite, value.
01:11
Value is any action that physically transforms a product or service into something the customer actually wants and is happy to pay for.
01:19
You know, hammering a nail, installing a window, pouring concrete.
01:22
Those are tangible value-adding steps.
01:24
Everything else, well, that's where we need to put on that special lens.
01:29
And we can remember these eight wastes with a super simple acronym, downtime.
01:34
But hey, this isn't just a list you need to memorize.
01:36
Like we're about to see, it's a chain reaction.
01:39
I want you to think of it like a set of dominoes, where one type of waste inevitably tips over and triggers the very next one.
01:45
Alright, so let's get to where the story of waste almost always kicks off.
01:50
Because if you really want to tackle inefficiency, you have to go right back to the source.
01:54
The first domino to fall, and honestly, the most crucial one, is overproduction.
02:00
As the lean expert Paul Akers says, this is the parent of all other waste.
02:04
Just about every single other problem we're going to talk about can be traced right back to this one thing.
02:09
So what is it exactly?
02:11
Well, it's making too much of something, or making it way too early.
02:15
In construction, this could look like detailing drawings far beyond what's needed for the design intent.
02:21
Or, a classic one, having a mountain of materials show up weeks before they can possibly be installed.
02:27
You're literally creating problems for your future self.
02:30
And here is the immediate fallout.
02:32
Overproduction instantly creates its best friend, excess inventory.
02:37
They are two sides of the very same coin.
02:39
The second you make too much, or you order too early, you've created a surplus.
02:44
A pile of stuff that now has to be stored, managed, moved, and protected.
02:49
So let's watch how this one single action sets off a whole cascade of other problems.
02:54
This is where the story gets really interesting, as we see those dominoes start to topple one by one.
02:59
First up, all that extra inventory, it's not going to move itself.
03:04
This creates unnecessary transportation.
03:07
Every single time you move those materials, from the truck, to a lay-down yard,
03:11
then from that yard to another spot to make way for another crew, you are adding zero value.
03:16
And worse, you're exposing it to potential damage.
03:19
And it's not just materials moving, it's people.
03:22
This leads directly to the waste of motion.
03:24
Just picture the extra steps a worker has to take just to get around the clutter from that excess inventory.
03:29
The searching for tools that are buried under a pile of premature deliveries.
03:33
The walking around a disorganized site.
03:35
It's all just wasted energy.
03:37
You know, the more you move things, and the longer they sit around,
03:40
the more likely they are to get damaged, or lost, or just degrade.
03:43
This chaos of movement and storage leads directly to defects.
03:47
That pallet of drywall gets rained on.
03:49
Those pipes get dented.
03:50
And now you've got errors that are going to require costly rework.
03:54
So, when you have a defect, you've got to fix it, right?
03:57
And that act of fixing it, that's over-processing.
04:01
You're literally paying for the same job to be done twice.
04:04
But it's also over-processing to give a higher quality finish than what the customer actually needs.
04:09
You know, like creating a perfectly smooth wall that's just going to be covered up by cabinets anyway.
04:14
And what's the result of all these problems piling up on top of each other?
04:18
Well, people and projects grind to a halt.
04:21
The waste of waiting is one of the most visible and, frankly, frustrating signs that your system is broken.
04:26
Your crew is literally standing around, waiting for a decision, for rework to get done,
04:31
or for the materials they need to be untangled from the mess.
04:35
So, we've watched this entire chain of waste unfold, all starting from one simple thing.
04:41
Overproduction.
04:42
But we've left out the most important piece of the puzzle.
04:45
The one thing that holds the key to preventing all of it.
04:48
What if we could stop these dominoes from falling in the first place?
04:52
You know, the solution isn't some new piece of software or a complex process.
04:56
The solution is already on your team.
04:59
The eighth waste is non-utilized talent.
05:02
This is what happens when we pay for a person's hands, but we completely fail to engage their brain.
05:06
The people actually doing the work, the carpenters, the electricians, the plumbers,
05:10
They are the ones most capable of seeing these problems and coming up with simple,
05:15
effective solutions before they spiral into chaos.
05:18
Masaaki Imai, one of the pioneers in continuous improvement, he just captures this brilliantly.
05:24
When we fail to empower our teams, when we don't ask for their ideas or respect their expertise,
05:29
we're not just being inefficient.
05:30
We are wasting our single greatest asset, human potential.
05:34
Okay, so now that we understand the story of waste and where it all comes from,
05:39
let's give you a practical tool to start seeing this for yourself on your own projects.
05:44
I want you to think of this table as your new lens.
05:47
Take this downtime acronym and go for what's called a waste walk on your own site or in your office sometime this week.
05:54
Just start looking at your processes and asking these questions.
05:57
Where are we seeing rework?
05:59
Why are people waiting?
06:00
Are we really listening to our team's ideas?
06:02
This is how you start to see.
06:05
So, let's just do a quick recap.
06:07
We've defined waste, we've walked through the downtime framework,
06:11
and we've followed that whole story of how one little act of overproduction can set off a huge cascade of problems.
06:17
But I think, most importantly, we've figured out that the power to stop it lies with the people who are already on your team.
06:23
And that brings us to our final thought.
06:26
You see, the first and the hardest step is just learning to see.
06:30
The next step is to act.
06:31
You can't fix everything all at once.
06:34
So, what's going to be your first target?
06:36
Where can you make the biggest difference tomorrow?
06:38
Thanks so much for joining this explainer.
06:41
And hey, if this sparked an idea, I really want to hear about it.
