00:00We will always protect our strategic, economic and security interests.
00:06We will face these challenges to our European solidarity with steadiness and resolve, end quote.
00:12Now let me emphasize that intensive consultations are ongoing among EU leaders.
00:19President Costa has indicated the likelihood of an extraordinary European Council this week to tackle this very subject.
00:26Third, it's clear from the consultations among EU leaders, including President von der Leyen,
00:34that the priority here is to engage, not escalate, and avoid the imposition of tariffs.
00:42Why? Because this will ultimately harm consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
00:48The EU has consistently underlined its shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO.
00:59In response to your questions, Jorge, should the threatened tariffs be imposed?
01:05First, the European Union has tools at its disposal and is prepared to respond because we will do everything necessary to protect EU economic interests.
01:18Is there any calls or meetings planned between President von der Leyen and President Donald Trump in the coming – today or in the coming days? Thanks.
01:29Thank you for your question.
01:30I'm not aware of any meeting that has been called between Presidents von der Leyen and Trump.
01:37They will both be in Davos.
01:40I can't discount the possibility that that may happen, but right now there is no such meeting planned.
01:45The agreement reached between the EU and US and the joint statement that provided a roadmap for further work thereof
01:57was designed and intended to stabilise transatlantic trade.
02:06What has happened since then?
02:09Transatlantic trade has been stabilised.
02:11Trade continues to flow.
02:12Investment continues to flow.
02:14So we need to be very sensible in how we approach the difference between a threat and operational reality.
02:24Yes, a threat has been made.
02:27The EU is responding to it responsibly, with restraint, by trying to make the origin of that threat go away and find a solution that works for all parties.
02:40The better to maintain the hard-won stability and predictability that the EU-US joint statement provides.
02:49I think we were quite clear in our earlier interventions on this topic that no decisions have been taken
02:55and that the focus right now is on engagement, not escalation, and on coordinating amongst EU leaders,
03:05first of all, to ensure a strong and unified EU position, a process that clearly is already underway,
03:11and secondly then to engage as necessary with the US to find a negotiated outcome.
03:17Can you trust the United States to protect Ukraine while it's threatened in Greenland?
03:22And are you willing to include Greenland in these negotiations of security guarantees,
03:28or are the two issues completely separated?
03:34I can only confirm that the work continues at full speed.
03:37As before, nothing has changed in this regard and in our unwavering support towards Ukraine.
03:44Thank you, Anita.
03:45Other questions for Anita Ayari.
03:52Yes, it's linked to Jorge's question.
03:54I think the original plan was to have – some of the leaders hoped to have a meeting with President Trump
04:01in the sidelines of Davos in order to discuss the security guarantees for Ukraine.
04:07So, do you foresee if there's a double agenda for the meetings, discussing the most recent tariff threats and the security guarantees?
04:18Look, I think this is the type of week where many geopolitical questions are going to be raised in multiple fora.
04:28So, we can't give you a precise answer, but I can well imagine that in some of the meetings that will take place in Davos,
04:36in the build-up also to the expected EUCO, that, of course, these kind of questions will be debated,
04:42because they remain high on the geopolitical agenda for the EU,
04:45and, as such, we will continue to focus on them in a meaningful way.
