00:00Ever wondered what it's like inside a heavy lift legend?
00:03Join Chief Warrant Officer 2, Robert Riedel, from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
00:08He's taking us straight into the cockpit and cargo hold of the massive CH-47F Chinook.
00:14Let's check it out.
00:15I'm CD2 Rob Riedel, and this is my CH-47 Fox model.
00:19The CH-47 Fox model is the only heavy lift helicopter in the United States Army's inventory,
00:24and if you want to follow me, I'll show you some of the features.
00:28Underneath the Chinook, you'll see three cargo hooks, able to be individually controlled
00:32from the cockpit.
00:33That allows me to load three bags of cargo individually, and then drop it off at separate locations
00:39without having to worry about re-rigging sling loads or anything of that nature.
00:43Additionally, I'm powered by two 5,000 horsepower engines, with one engine able to power both
00:49rotor systems.
00:50If you want to come with me to the inside.
00:54The Chinook has a ramp for primary means of ingress and egress from the airframe.
01:00We do have ramps as well to enable loading of vehicles, as well as when we are dealing
01:05with cargoes in palletized form, such as warehouse pallets or Air Force style 463L pallets.
01:13We do have rollers that exist here on the floor that we just have to pick up, flip over, reinsert,
01:17and then we are good to go.
01:21Seating in the back is, on the backs, on the sides, we have 32 seats, this and then moving
01:27up we also have the additional seats for our crew members at the forward portion, with one
01:31additional seat that sits between the two pilots, enabling us in a full air movement configuration
01:39from point A to point B of carrying upwards of 32 to 33 troops.
01:45Up front is where the two door guns would sit.
01:48On the left and right hand side, they are 240 Hotel Variance 7.62mm machine guns.
01:55Up front, if you would like to step into the cockpit.
02:00This is where the pilot's main office is.
02:03In the center between the pedals, you'll see the cyclic, that's the main stick.
02:07On the left hand side, in the Chinook is called a thrust, in conventional helicopters, it is
02:11called a collective.
02:12Additionally, the Chinook's a little unique in the Army inventory, in the sense that we
02:16have power steering to control the aircraft while we are on the ground.
02:20And that is in the bottom left here, and the knob looks kind of like a hockey puck, and that's
02:25how we drive ourselves around.
