00:00Why you have to bring that ball?
00:02Are you saying nothing if you get to it?
00:06The first time I met Sidney Poitier
00:08was when I went to his office at Columbia Pictures
00:12to request he signed my application
00:14to the Directors Guild of America.
00:16He took the time to talk to me,
00:18and I felt like a kid,
00:20listening to his anecdotes about the film industry.
00:24It was kind of like a passing of a torch.
00:26I'd just like to say,
00:28I'm very proud to carry that flame
00:30that you gave to me.
00:32Thank you, Sidney.
00:38A dragon.
00:43Stuff.
00:53It's mainly a coming-of-age movie.
00:56You know, it's a coming-of-conscious, this movie.
00:58It's a teenage story, in a way.
01:01You have to think, young brother, about your future.
01:04It gave a voice to the voiceless.
01:07Listen, I want to do something with my life, all right?
01:09I want to be somebody.
01:11The film, for me, it's like my diary.
01:15Ricky!
01:16John was extra courageous
01:19and not really going after the biggest names he could find,
01:24but going after people he envisioned in the role.
01:29I was really honored when it was put in the registry,
01:32because I was like,
01:33wow, that means that it's going to be one of those things
01:36that goes even far beyond my life.
01:39I'm tired of sitting up in this house,
01:41not having a man next to me when I was being lonely.
01:42I'm going to do what the fuck I want to do.
01:43What?
01:44Anybody looking to maintain their employment
01:45with the NYPD,
01:54okay, good napically,
01:55that's what I want to do.
01:57I'm tired of sitting up in this house,
