00:00What have you invested in this to make it to this level 265,000 265,000 I had a house I sold it
00:19Sabrina you started this company right we we all did when you talk Stephanie you say I a lot
00:27how much time and money did it take you to come up with this so we built this in under a month
00:34one month oh come on whoa mic drop
00:57first up I watched the show since the very beginning I have wanted to have a good reason
01:04to be here and what better reason than the 20th anniversary okay superheroes let's slay some
01:09dragons life squad do it girls will this super entrepreneur from Barry win over the dragons or
01:19leave them scratching their heads superheroes and capes well hi dragons my name is Dawn Moochie
01:27and I'm the founder of life squad.com and superhero kids hair with care we provide head lice removal
01:34services and specialized hair care across 30 franchise locations wow I'm here today to ask
01:41for your mentorship and $150,000 in exchange for 5% of my company now dragons since you are the
01:49superheroes of entrepreneurs across Canada I invite you to put on a cape and join me in my mission to
01:56build a children's hair care empire I have a solution what's the solution West just no hair so I would
02:04like to invite each of you up for a complimentary professional peace of mind head check a typical
02:10session with the life squad takes around 60 to 90 minutes while clinicians wash and comb out
02:16both the lice and their eggs they also offer do-it-yourself kids I have been you have well I think you
02:26don's franchises exist as storefront salons or as express mobile services
02:31what the heck is going on here oh my god
02:35oh my god
02:37oh my god
02:39and I'm out
02:41superheroes your work here is done thank you you can leave
02:46superheroes well done
02:48don's franchises exist as storefront salons or as express mobile services
02:54so done how long you've been removing lice i started this business in 2001 2001 24 years
03:05wow and and why as a child i got lice a lot i got you know teased and then as a single mom
03:12my son brought it home from daycare and i went right back to that negative space i went looking
03:16for help and there really wasn't anything i kind of resonate with with brian and his story being
03:22high school dropout i was the kid with the lemonade stand always created things and solved problems
03:29back in jamaica at the time they used to because it was stigmatized big time yeah they used to put
03:34kerosene that's correct in my head and then tie it yes what yes you'd be surprised the lengths people
03:42will go to get the bugs out of their hair what are people's options today so the common go-to is you
03:49go to the drugstore and you get an over-the-counter permethrin or pesticide-based product okay people
03:54are becoming more um aware of the dangerous effects obviously pesticides on people the planet and our
04:00agricultural system um what we do is called the moochie method we use medical devices that's what
04:05this is that's our comb we use uh we use oils we use minerals we use um i actually didn't show you
04:10some of our children's hair care products here but we use conditioners to help us with the combing
04:16we use oils smother bugs you know if my child gets lice i come into your salon and what happens
04:23there so our average ticket's 250 per person yeah wow okay that's not inexpensive anywhere else you
04:31could go to get this done or no i pioneered the industry you can find a nancy nitpicker in a
04:35basement somewhere or you know you might have i love it you might have like i think i have two or three
04:41competitors in canada at the moment but they're a one-off shop somewhere what were your sales
04:46last year our sales last year were 2.9 million system-wide sales was only 2.9 correct how about
04:51your royalty 1.5 and our franchisees i would say basically each unit the metrics are about 150
04:59000 per unit but that's not very much money 150 000 after you take out all your costs darn good money
05:06really what are they left with at the end of the day they're probably left with about 25 percent of
05:11that
05:11yeah that's a that's not very good
05:19they have product revenue on top of their service revenue so we have about a 70 service revenue and
05:27the product revenues is 30 percent give me one number don't make me gassed on
05:32how much does one of your franchisees earn to take home at the end of the day in one year net
05:39so they would probably make about 45 to 50 000 but that's nothing
05:43they make about 50 000 a year to run this and what are they paying to get into the business
05:49how much are they paying for a franchise fee is 35 000 35k and then what and then what do they pay
05:54for royalties 10 10 so they're broke they're not making anything and i have to say that a lot of my
06:00owners are multi-unit owners and they have two or three locations as well i would lose my entire
06:05franchise system if they were taking home that per location i'm going to disagree
06:10if if it sucked for them we wouldn't have franchisees who have been with us for 20 years
06:17we wouldn't have franchisees who've been with us for over a decade they have bought themselves a
06:21really nice meaningful job and that they feel is essential for their community we've survived two
06:28recessions and a pandemic and we're in the headlice business i think that's fair i mean are you sure
06:33your math is right don i might actually be second guessing because i think i might be second guessing
06:40honestly it doesn't make sense all the numbers you're giving us i should have brought my accountant
06:43with me just got another error in the numbers here how could the average store be doing 150k
06:50if system-wide sales divided by number of locations is less than 100k i think i did some mistake of
06:56averaging out the per unit sales where some units are smaller and some are higher in revenue so that
07:02was my mistake don yes the math is a method for me so i'm going to be out
07:07it can't be in partnership with somebody who doesn't know their numbers i'm out
07:14don as an investment it it just isn't making sense for me financially so i'm going to be out
07:22so as a fellow high school dropout congratulations
07:27uh we made it i'm going to be out but i will be cheering you on and uh rooting for a fellow
07:33franchisor i really wanted someone to join me mentor me help me grow this and whether it's a loan or it's
07:40an equity stake or it's a i'll sing you my jingle i don't care oh let's hear the jingle please let's hear
07:46let's hear the jingle i need a beat yes come on guys great let's go when you start to scratch
07:54and you're wondering why and you find a bug you start to cry pick up the phone make the call
08:01the life squad will come and get rid of them all when you want headlights gone visit life squad.com
08:09there you go okay how can you not say no how can you say no to that brian did i get a deal come on
08:16do i have a deal how could you say no to that i admire your spirit your tenacity and you have
08:22built something special yeah thank you thank you dawn it's you and me michelle put on a cape just for
08:28this i actually think if you understand your numbers a bit better yeah you'll actually understand
08:32how to build this business a bit better sorry i'm out okay well dragons it's been an honor and a
08:38pleasure as they say thank you up up and away i have a headlights empire to build
08:43this spirit oh great great great enthusiasm does lift the building like she's just got a
08:49attitude she's got such a great attitude i didn't know my numbers as well as i should that's my bad
08:56but there's such an opportunity and i'm going to take the advice of the dragons so do you mind if
09:00i ask what you pay yourself uh 10k well that's nothing 10k yes so you're living on
09:0810 000 i don't even know how you're living on 10 000 a year that's that is commitment
09:28next an entrepreneur looking to prove he's got a golden opportunity for a mouth-watering deal
09:34hello dragons my name is pierre saint rose i'm from scarborough toronto i'm the founder and owner
09:42of crumbs patties i'm here seeking 175 000 for 20 of our business dragons do you know what a patty is
09:52yes yes is this a jamaican patty correct it is i love jamaican patties so does someone else
10:02over the last 50 years the jamaican patty has been the iconic snack of toronto crumbs patties is a gourmet
10:10patty company we serve traditional and also specialty patties and with that said they're dragons who's willing
10:18to create a crumbs trail across canada let's taste these patties thank you beef is a classic the whole
10:25purpose of crumbs is taking that single patty and creating five different things from it so we have
10:31a breakfast patty then we have a beef and cheese which a lot of people call a cheeseburger then we
10:37also have a pizza pouch for the pizza taste it's got the pizza and the patty flavor combined which is
10:46pretty interesting because i'm not sure if i'm eating pizza or patties but i like them both
10:51i know a little bit about the patty space there's like michedean there's um patty king there's a
10:55couple big i know i don't you know michelle no no no i'm just telling you i know who makes patties in
11:01the city and i like the creativity of giving people the ability to try jamaican patty but then also a
11:08lot of familiar um flavors and also one of the things that we also do is a customization so we try to
11:15let customers have an experience where they can choose and pick whatever they want in the patty
11:20that's really unique is it corporate stores is it franchise is it just the patties that you sell
11:26frozen we've done a pop-up um at young and dundas and that's one of our highest traffic where in five
11:32months we amassed 140 000 k in a pop-up holy it's a lot of patties and do you have a normal shop that's
11:40open all the time so right now we have a store that's located in kensington market it's a great
11:45area but it's seasonal right now we're open three to four days a week and how much do you sell them
11:50for our price point is from five dollars for a standard patty up to ten dollars no i don't want
11:56to pay more than two bucks for a patty well that's you though but i don't know if you're the clientele
12:01even with us like a lot of people love our patties and we have a mass following however a lot of people
12:07come to the store five dollars for a patty they don't want to hear that i i totally see that
12:11it's five dollars for a cookie for goodness sake people have been stuck at a lower price point
12:16in this space if you go to the mall now you would see that a cinnamon bond is 6.99 a pretzel
12:24is 5.99 however a jamaican patty is still seen as two dollars and fifty cents and it has meat i think
12:31it's really good that you figured out how to take basically the price point of a patty from 250 to
12:36five dollars appreciate that i want to know what your cost is to manufacture each patty and where
12:41you're doing that it's a dollar 92 and currently we're in a shared commissary area so how big do you
12:47want to get to this thing here great question so we would like to get three or four more locations in
12:53high traffic areas in the gta toronto and then from there look at vancouver montreal right right and
13:00there's a saying look look money makes enough enough money meaning even though the product is
13:05so small and such you make a lot of it you can make a lot of money absolutely pierre why wouldn't
13:10you just get a bank to finance it so back in 2017 i went to the bank with a business plan they said
13:16that i don't have any experience and they don't like lending money to restaurants first of all you're
13:21from scarborough i'm from scarborough okay i did the same thing put a business plan together to start
13:25kingsdale went to the bank with it they told me exactly the same thing they turned me down i mortgaged
13:30my house for a hundred thousand dollars to do this what have you invested in this to make it
13:34to this level 265 000 265 000. i had a house i sold it so what were your sales in 2024 from 2022
13:44we did 132 000 2023 we did 178 000 and last year we did 210 000 and again as i said we're only operating
13:55three days a week but have you made money any year like last year on the 210
14:00last year we we made net uh 6 800 so do you mind if i ask what you pay yourself
14:10uh 10k well that's nothing 10k yes so you're living on 10 000 i don't even know how you're
14:16living on 10 000 a year that's that is commitment appreciate that and and you know like it's not easy
14:23it's really difficult to do do you think this can be big i i definitely and that's why i'm here
14:30because we're right at the cusp where it can take to a whole different level again it's just financial
14:36help injection as well as a little probably some help of sightseeing of where it can go but you've
14:42been at this quite a while like when you're not open in your location there should be other ways that you
14:48should be selling your product and that is the piece of this puzzle that is missing and i'm not
14:54willing to build for you i'm out you're too small right now to be investable from my perspective i think
15:04you're a great entrepreneur and i think you'll find a way forward but i'm going to be out
15:10pierre super tasty thank you i think you're too early for an investor you've got some things to figure out
15:15and for that reason i'll be out i actually like the patty business i think there is a there is
15:23going to be a surge in this category i think you're right though it's a growing market here's here's
15:29what i like with the business it's a really good protein snack it's really not that expensive and it's
15:33something you can get um in a couple minutes and it's real food right you're making this with real
15:38ingredients um i think it is at that point where it's like like it has mass appeal i would give you
15:47175k for 40 of the business wow wow is the word i appreciate you seeing the vision i appreciate that
15:58that 40 is a huge stake um is there anything that you would it's steep but it's also like
16:09i mean again your revenue was 200 grand last year right is there ideally looking
16:15at a 30 to 35 percent
16:23wes are you out here are you in i'm not going to make an offer but i'm prepared to give you the
16:29advice that you need and introduce to the right people so that you can get the financing in place
16:36to build this a little bit more value right and and so i'll be out but if you want that advice i'll be
16:43i'll be happy to provide it to you and help i appreciate that there okay i'm actually going
16:47to stick with my offer of 40 i know it i know it seems steep but you're at a very early stage of
16:53the business right now okay
17:04let's go michelle let's do it okay
17:06and one of the things at our store what we all do is we give up the foot a handshake and we also
17:14give a pound oh so everyone that when anyone that comes to our store we give a pound and this is a
17:18way of saying thank you thank you i appreciate that i appreciate that thank you very much thank you
17:27i don't know probably crazy i think there's something in patties right now the patty is making
17:32a renaissance in the city is making a serious renaissance we are the proud co-founders of bouquet
17:39dating based right here in toronto so you guys why don't you swipe through why don't we find out who
17:43it is so if you swipe and how do i like is there a beep beep beep
18:02now taking the stage an actor turned entrepreneur hoping his app really connects with the dragons hello
18:10dragons my name is ali momen and i'm carlos saba and we are the proud co-founders of bouquet dating based
18:17right here in toronto we are asking for 100 000 in exchange for 20 of our business we are the makers of
18:26bouquet the revolutionary new dating app which helps people slow the swipe and choose with
18:31intention who you date it's one of the most important decisions of your life yet we make
18:38it with such haste and only on the surface and no more is that evident than on dating apps we're
18:44choosing who to love based on a photo and a two second scroll that's why with bouquet every profile
18:50starts blurred as you swipe through thoughtful prompts and profile details the image gradually
18:55sharpens revealing more of the person aligning the eyes the mind and the heart we verify every user
19:02for safety and we even offer built-in support with juno our ai-powered relationship guide an industry
19:08first which helps users navigate everything from first messages to first dates so who's ready to slow
19:15the swipe i mean i'm the only single one up here so we've gone ahead and created a profile for you
19:21if you uh click on the b icon to see who we have next for you okay so your first suitor is a man from
19:28any town usa see who it is he's got a private jet already my private jet where we sip champagne and debate
19:35pre-nut clauses yeah no but i just want you to swipe and why don't we find out who it is so if you
19:40swipe oh how do i like is there a beep beep beep i mean not my type so then hit the x if you want
19:51we have another suitor waiting for you oh okay yeah boom how would i spend an entire day with no technology
19:58i'll be outside morning coffee on the porch a walk that turns into a hike
20:04i've mastered the hustle still learning how to rest without guilt this one yeah i like beautiful
20:09now from here you could start chatting with him if you uh choose the chat icon on the bottom there
20:13and he's already sent you a message now we're back now we're back and we have a little feature that's
20:18going to give you uh in chat ai assistance so if you're like listen you know we've been talking for
20:23a while and he hasn't asked me out what do you think i should do it's like coaching yeah so i didn't
20:28need therapy all these years i just needed judo to tell me what to do bokeh so ali and carlos could
20:34you not find dates why'd you come up with this well i just got married oh congratulations yeah thank
20:40you so much did you find her on bokeh yeah you know what we actually did meet on a dating app my wife
20:44and i i was in the broadway tour of come from away come from away closed and i was like i want to learn
20:50how to code a computer i didn't really learn how to code a computer but i met carlos who on his own
20:56basically created the front end and back end of this entire app carlos you did all the programming
21:01uh yeah all the programming i put uh no investment into myself other than the time so there's two
21:06differentiators really of your app is that there's no photo until the end and that there's ai empowered
21:13advice yeah but but to be clear lots of lots of um dating apps now have ai integrated yes of course okay
21:21so i had a failed dating app startup so i know a lot about the space um there's a couple of like
21:28just really important things so first thing with dating apps is it's easy to get men it's hard to
21:33get women on dating apps they're real yes i mean we have 6 000 people who have downloaded the app so
21:36far 40 percent of them are women which is above the industry average of 35 then the second challenge
21:42you have is it's a terrible business model because once you get you know married and settled down
21:48you're no longer a user of the app the industry trend is really fascinating so tinder has been on
21:54a decline but hinge has gone up 29 percent uh year over year and that one is a relationship-based app
22:01okay and how much do you guys charge so we charge uh 29 monthly for bouquet plus how much is the revenue
22:08so far in one year revenue so far is around just a thousand dollars a thousand
22:11it would strike me as a very difficult space to enter because i think back to whoever bought the
22:18first fax machine who do you send a fax to that's a very limited amount of people that are actually
22:22going in the app trying to meet each other we are hoping that with the hundred thousand dollars we can
22:28generate let's say 80 000 users tinder came out with the swipe in 2012 bumble came out with women's come
22:35come first and then i think this is the next step one of the dragons that used to be on the show
22:40bruce croxson invented leveling and he created i think a couple million users um of that product
22:45long before dating apps were really uh you know big at all and i think there's lots of opportunity
22:51the problem is is it's just going to be like ai prompts talking to other ai crops and then all
22:56these people are not going to be able to build a real meaningful relationship aren't you glad we're
23:00married brian thank you gosh how we have instructed juno is to be like you are never to tell people what
23:08to say you are to encourage them to speak with their own voice i think michelle says something
23:14that really triggered me because the dating industry is a dirty business and i like that you're not maybe
23:20there is room in this space to have some you know an app that's actually ethical and does care about
23:26people and doesn't do the wrong things i think your big idea of slow down the swipe is is a big one i
23:34can't see this but it doesn't mean that you can't or arlene can't but for that reason i'm out
23:44i think you guys are very efficient in terms of what you've done so far it's not a space that i've
23:50invested in and it's very competitive and so for that reason i'm going to be out
23:55i honestly just don't see the future of it i don't see how i can make money how you're going to scale
24:06i'm out
24:10i'm going to make you an offer wow i i am not a tech entrepreneur this is be clear but i am a really
24:17damn good marketer so i'll give you the hundred for twenty percent and if we don't hit eighty thousand
24:23i get ten percent more of the company
24:28i want to know that you're that deeply committed to this being successful that they're yeah that
24:33there's skin in the game big time for you
24:38if she gets 30 is a lot right well if you have to raise my money my offer michelle make your own
24:45i would like there's this line that goes around that's like the internet was created by the three g's
24:50girls gaming and gambling and they're the toughest dirtiest industries on the internet i'm going
24:58to be out because i think you're going to have to do things that are way more aggressive
25:02to win in this space than you guys are prepared to do
25:04okay you have one offer
25:12arlene
25:15we're not alone
25:16i have had probably some of my silliest biggest losses on teams falling apart for no reason we
25:45hit our rocky year and i think that as we've gone to know each other we love each other as though
25:52we're in a marriage why isn't the company bigger
26:04we're in a marriage
26:09next in the den a dr farmer duo here to press the dragons for a deal
26:16an apple a day keeps the doctor away
26:21hi dragons i'm sabrina pseudo and i'm steve pseudo i'm dr stephanie liu and i'm dr graham
26:27maholland we're from edmonton alberta dragons we're here to ask for a hundred thousand dollars
26:32in return for ten percent of our business palm md dragons in 2022
26:42my mom was diagnosed with a terminal cancer during that time she was constantly thirsty
26:51we searched for every hydration and electrolyte beverage most of them had artificial sweeteners
26:58and additives so i made it my goal to find something that she could consume that was not
27:06only effective but tasted good in a time where she really needed it my mother-in-law's favorite beverage
27:14was her fresh pressed juices because the apples came from our family farm pseudo farms
27:22i'm a surgeon with a background in biochemistry and my wife stephanie
27:26is a family physician with a background in nutrition we've been long-time friends of the
27:31pseudos and together we developed a delicious hydration beverage that's rooted in science and
27:37that's how palm md was born into this billion dollar hydration industry palm md is just fresh
27:43pressed apple juice and essential electrolytes now this is hydration done better dragons you need
27:49to try it to believe it so i've had your drink before me too i've had it's very good my youngest
27:58daughter loves it this is delicious it's delicious yeah i think it's uh very refreshing as well
28:09and it's uh it's like you're eating apple but you're drinking it yeah which is it feels very natural
28:15so talk to me about the consistency of the apples how do you make sure that every batch tastes the same
28:21the family has been in produce for over 40 years with pseudo farms i would say steve knows every farm
28:29in the okanagan and we know how to use whatever apples are on hand in order to mimic it consistently
28:36so this is apple juice fresh squeezed but then you add in the electrolytes yeah so the idea actually
28:43came to us so one of the ways i like to unwind in the evening is um reading medical journals just to
28:47stay up to date that puts me to sleep yeah good one so we're not doctors a groundbreaking article
28:54was published and they actually found that i do dilute apple juice did just as good as those pediatric
28:59electrolyte drinks stephanie are you a pediatrician i'm a family doctor but my internet name is dr mom
29:06i'm actually uh one of the biggest doctor bloggers in canada with over 200 000 social media okay wow
29:12i'm curious as to how many stores you guys are in right now so we're at 160 right now and what's
29:18what are your sales to date then our sales in year one was 57 000 and then year two today is 100 000
29:24and how much does it cost you to make one of these so for the can it's a dollar 75. dollar 75 and then
29:31we sell it wholesale for three and what does it retail for 4.99 for one can correct wow and and sorry
29:38that sounds very high that sounds really high for apple juice we think about it as more of a premium
29:44product right i pay you know upwards of five dollars for a fresh press juice i put us more in that
29:50category so stephanie and graham you guys are both doctors yeah right you're not gonna do this full
29:56time so you're just investors and then uh tell me i think one of the advantages for us is i i will do
30:02a lot of marketing for this with my social media and i love this too so i just checked out your instagram
30:08actually but you're never posting about the beverage so why is that i have to really feel like we're like
30:14perfect in all aspects i wasn't crazy about our initial packaging the other part of it was the
30:19flavor profile i had to have it perfect and it's perfect now and for me before i put my name behind
30:25it it needs to be compliance perfect too and now we've checked off all of those three and i will be
30:30beast mode sharing on social media sabrina you started this company right we we all did you all did
30:38but when you talk stephanie you you say i a lot and i didn't mean it like okay because you're saying you
30:44know i think we should do this i want to do that i'd like to have this happen we are a family
30:49business this is the first time we've ever brought any outsiders in not gonna lie we definitely had
30:56different levels of conflict communication is probably the hardest thing that can happen behind
31:02the scenes in business i have had probably some of my silliest biggest losses on teams falling apart
31:08for no reason we hit our rocky year and i think that as we've gone to know each other we love each
31:20other as though we're in a marriage and we're committed to each other my question is why isn't
31:26the company bigger we don't want to make big financial mistakes we need someone that really has
31:32the experience not just the money there's nothing wrong with taking your time at the beginning to
31:37get it right but you have to move even if it's not perfect if you wait for perfect you will miss the
31:42opportunity likely walk before you run but don't crawl so how it hit me was wondering you're in medicine
31:50the two of you uh and then with the farm who's spending their full-time focus on driving this business
31:56forward sabrina you are all in are you not like are you doing this yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i mean
32:04yes i help support the business do you have a day job do you have anything that you do beside this so
32:10yes i do what is it i practice chinese medicine and acupuncture for fertility and so you're also
32:18you're not inside of it so you guys are all that is not my full-time job still another job yeah
32:24i think as an investable business without one person a hundred percent backing this up i'm going
32:30to be out we have 30 companies in the we shop portfolio the world that i play with those 30
32:37companies is a mentorship role i can't play the same role with you right now i'm gonna be out
32:43for me the relationship between the four of you is just too complicated to invest in um i'm gonna be out
32:57we still want this we still want this i i you understand food and beverage
33:04michelle you have a thought process that knows how to pick up on the holes
33:08so i get it i'm hearing it i'm listening um
33:14we want to deal we want to we want to deal um and i appreciate the persistence you guys are using
33:24i i think there's challenges here with cost the team dynamic i'm gonna be out
33:30i'm making intense eye contact with you arlene like we can learn so much and we're very approachable
33:41i don't want you to think that we're underestimating or under appreciating the skill set that you have
33:48you have a really good product i know how committed you two are you're just too early for an investor
33:55i'm gonna be out okay thank you guys it's too complicated there was something there was
34:05something there that was really there was tension that you can see they could feel it these apples
34:11are really good are they really good too bad they weren't selling us the apples yeah
34:16you built this yourselves yeah so we coded this completely all on our own yes that's awesome how old
34:23are you two i just turned 18 and i'm 15.
34:43it's been a dream come true so whatever happens it's one thing off our bucket list
34:48we've been watching this show since we were like five
34:56last siblings from toronto hoping the dragons can verify the work that went into their business
35:03hi dragons we're nico and edlin we're asking for ten thousand dollars for 50 of our company
35:09edify my friend was falsely accused of using ai to do his homework and was forced to redo it or get a zero
35:16oh current ai detector reports only give a percentage predicting the probability of ai usage with no
35:24supporting data we started brainstorming ways to help him defend his work and that's how we came up
35:29with edify edify is a typing analytics tool that allows you to see a detailed playback of all the
35:36edits you made to the document you can see any backspaces and any copy and pasted text from an external
35:43source it also shows when you worked on the document which is useful to see time management trends for
35:49example did i work on it throughout the whole week or did i finish it the day before it was due
35:54edify is also great for group work this feature shows how much each student contributed to the group
36:00document and which parts they contributed to go nia nia did all the work from that teachers can see
36:06whether students copied their work with minimal effort or not because student effort matters
36:11verify with edify that's awesome great pitch how old are you two i'm in grade 12 so i just turned 18
36:18and i'm 15 in grade 10. so this whole concept is you don't have to run it through an ai filter
36:24but you're just going to see how much time this person spend on each paragraph for each aspect of
36:29their work that's interesting exactly so current ai detectors are using ai to detect ai which can be
36:35extremely inaccurate as both just keeps on keep on getting better and it's sort of like a cat and
36:40mouse chase where docs does this time stamping and and you can see when you authored it yeah who authored
36:45it where the changes were made can't you just use a software like that so google docs has version
36:51history which just gives a date and then it shows what block of text was written you don't know if it
36:56was copy and pasted off of chat gpt or if they typed it themselves so we provide more features such as a
37:01playback what if i got chat gpt to write my paper and then i slowly type it out into your software
37:07yes so if you do that first it will all be in one writing session unless you split it up into
37:12multiple days you'd be clever you'd write it in different sessions you'd look like you were
37:15editing it but you're really using it sounds like you've been cheating it too michelle no i'm just
37:19thinking of how a student would think and how how to game the system so when you see two essays side
37:24by side it's really clear when you delete a sentence you rephrase it and do that multiple times and we
37:29believe that at a certain point it's less effort to pretend that you're actively typing for four
37:33hours and just to do the work yourself so edlin how does it work this is a chrome extension so
37:39basically on chrome you can just search it up and you get to the chrome web store and really quickly
37:44in two clicks you can just press install add to chrome and it's automatically there so it's not even
37:49an app it's it's it's it's just a plugin it's a browser extension yeah so that's like that's really
37:54impressive right you built this yourselves yeah so we coded this completely all on our own
37:58you coded it yes did you code with ai no it was actually really difficult i don't think ai would
38:05be able to code this specific thing because we had to go into google docs and like completely reverse
38:10engineer it and figure out how it worked so how do you guys make money we're in the process of developing
38:17a premium plan for teachers and this premium plan is directly integrated into google classroom teachers
38:23can automatically see how much time that on average the class took and it will flag out any outliers
38:28that they might want to look closer at at the individual report and for this premium plan we plan
38:33to charge five dollars per teacher per month which is much cheaper than existing competitors i'm just
38:38curious on the on that part of it right i'm a teacher i'm underpaid right and i'm gonna actually
38:43pay for this it's gonna save me as a teacher hours of my i know but a lot of these things are sold to the
38:49school boards because it's their duty to try to prevent this from happening we found the most
38:54effective way right now is that when we go to school boards and principals it often does not
38:58trickle down to teachers yeah so we find that when we tell teachers about it they are able to get
39:02administrators to pay for it have you had any hurdles with the school boards or with people
39:06saying you can't sell or yeah so at first when we tried to sell it to the toronto district school
39:11board teachers they banned all extensions and apps to be installed on teacher accounts because
39:16for safety reasons so we had to email the head of i.t to get try and get it unblocked but they
39:21immediately dismissed us obviously because we're high school kids and they say they only trust big
39:25corporations people who are not taking you seriously because of your age big mistake because you're super
39:31smart we sent a lot of emails and we had to get trustees to advocate for us but in the end when
39:37we were finally able to get it unblocked it was a huge win for us yeah huge win how much time and
39:43money did it take you to come up with this yeah so we built this in under a month one month yes oh my
39:49okay i've been coding since i was grade five wow i'm in grade 12 now so in terms of the money that we
39:55spent so far currently it's 20 per year for domain and hosting fees and we haven't spent any other money
40:01except to create these t-shirts this is the power you've invested 25 dollars it's the power of being able
40:07and in our bank account right now we have 18 000 that's from um pitching competitions that we've
40:13won for eight oh come on mic drop good job why are you prepared to give 50 of your company away for
40:20ten thousand dollars so currently we are almost going to launch our the premium plan the feedback
40:26would be really invaluable to helping us with marketing and advertising we're good at building
40:30things but it's our first time doing any business related stuff and having a mentor would help us go
40:36to market a lot faster it's so impressive wow okay guys i would bet on smart software developers
40:42any day i'm so impressed with what you guys have built so far i will give you the ten thousand dollars
40:47for fifty percent thank you i will also give you the ten thousand for your fifty percent
40:57i think what we should do because i think you're going to get all of us saying that we'll give you
41:01ten thousand dollars you are the future so maybe maybe if we get everybody we give you fifty thousand
41:06dollars for fifty percent wow
41:12there is going to be so much software around ai detection created in the next
41:1612 to 24 months you're at the exact right time to double down on this versus weight so what do you
41:21guys think each of us give them ten thousand dollars i agree we see the future of canada right in
41:26front of us right now so we're going to give you enough money so you can actually concentrate on building
41:30something build this so we're offering you fifty thousand dollars for fifty percent you get all
41:36five of us coming in that's five times the ask thank you thank you i actually think you undervalued
41:43what you've built here do you want to take some time to think about it
41:58that was great that was great great job thank you oh that's amazing
42:03thank you so much congratulations you guys are so smart you are going to inspire so many young
42:12entrepreneurs thank you so much bye oh that was fun wow that was really good pictures they knew what
42:18they were talking about that was great like that they were so good and clear we were not expecting that
42:23at all we're so excited to share with so many more teachers in schools and we think this can make a
42:28real difference
