The Saturday Qualifying session for Round 12 of the 2003 F1 season at Hockenheim.
Transcript
00:00:30Hello and welcome to Speed Channel's coverage of final qualifying for the 12th round of the
00:00:37Formula One World Championship. It is the German Grand Prix this weekend. I'm Rick DeBruhl. Joining
00:00:42me as always, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and this guy, Nicholas Chiesa, the new kid on the
00:00:46block. We'll talk more about him in just a moment, but David, why don't you take us around the
00:00:50circuit before he gets there with the Porsche track map? Well, the Hockenheim Ring has been
00:00:54very different the last two years, much shorter than it used to be at 2.8 miles. We've got 17
00:00:58turns in there. The stadium where the checkered flag is, go down to turn one, very fast right
00:01:03hander. Then the whole circuit's four short. And turn six is where you're going to see all the
00:01:07overtaking action tomorrow. But the speed these days is from 12 through 17. The car's got a lot
00:01:13more downpours now than they used to have because they haven't got the long straight. So a lot of
00:01:16action in there. And of course, that's the stadium where everybody's watching.
00:01:22And right now, everybody's watching Villeneuve in the garage as he watches, the guy out on the
00:01:27track, Nicholas Chiesa. Nicholas Chiesa, who likely would have been qualifying first out
00:01:33anyway today. But the reason he's really out there today is because his car stopped as he
00:01:39pulled out on the track for his very first Formula One qualifying run yesterday. Apparently,
00:01:44he said it was, I guess, the stall control. Didn't quite have it figured out. And as a result,
00:01:47he stalled. Yep. And Paul Stollard looking a bit stalled at that note. Nicholas Chiesa,
00:01:51of course, standing in for Justin Wilson, who's moved up to the Jaguar team. So a great day for
00:01:56Justin Wilson. And a great day for Nicholas Chiesa, too, if he could make it stick.
00:02:02Nicholas Chiesa, who has been running Formula 3000 this year and has now finally moved up
00:02:07to Formula One, as David was just mentioning, by the fact that Justin Wilson's moved up to
00:02:12the Jaguar. And the rumor has it that he's brought about a million dollars in Danish Peugeot
00:02:17money along with him.
00:02:18So Nicholas Chiesa starts his very first qualifying lap for Formula One. And all Chiesa really needs
00:02:29to achieve here is just take it nice and steady, put the car back in one piece and put it on
00:02:36the grid. Don't make any mistakes. He did have one test day at Fiorano before. Even though they
00:02:47were in the middle of a testing band, he was allowed to go out and spend a day at Fiorano
00:02:53running around, getting used to the car. Imagine coming to this track if you had not had that
00:02:57opportunity.
00:02:59Boy, that would be a pretty stout track these days. And it's very, very hot today. The terrific
00:03:05temperature, right about 90 degrees. Track temperatures up around about the 130 mark. And it's humid.
00:03:16So it's a stern test. The race will be a really stern test tomorrow. Now he's into the stadium
00:03:20section. This is the Saks curve. Tight left-hander. And as you can see, that's where all the people
00:03:27are watching.
00:03:27Yeah, the stadium section is a really nice area where everybody, that's where all the
00:03:36main grandstands are located. Even back in the days, a 119.174, which for what it's worth
00:03:43is faster than he ran in the last practice session.
00:03:46And I would expect pole is going to be round about, you don't know how much fuel these guys
00:03:53are carrying, but it's going to be round about the 15, high 14, low 15.
00:03:58Chiesa in the 50-minute warm-up session didn't set a time. He was doing a lot of in-out laps,
00:04:05six in-out laps going out, doing one lap and back in without actually crossing the timing
00:04:10beam. And the mechanics and the engineers working to get him comfortable in the car just before
00:04:13this one lap special.
00:04:16In fact, he only did four laps in the last practice session. Jacques Villeneuve out on
00:04:22the track right now, the BAR.
00:04:25Looking a bit twitchy through turn one. In fact, he spun there yesterday, which is why
00:04:29he is going second today.
00:04:33A lot of discussion about his future in Formula One, whether he's going to be back next year
00:04:38and whether he'll be back with this team.
00:04:39In fact, there was a big powwow where they were discussing whether or not they're really
00:04:45giving his car enough effort.
00:04:49Well, easy for him to say, but of course, he's one of the highest paid drivers in Formula
00:04:52One and the team is not doing well.
00:04:55And it's one of those situations where one has to say what is wrong with his picture.
00:05:00Villeneuve not having very good results.
00:05:02Generally speaking, he's got as quick as his young teammate Jenson Button this year and
00:05:08getting paid a huge amount of money and a lot of angling to maybe try and get rid of
00:05:13him.
00:05:13Yeah, it's difficult.
00:05:15There's a lot of politics in Formula One.
00:05:17We all know that.
00:05:19Early on, it seemed highly unlikely that he would be back at all.
00:05:22And now at least there have been some rumors that, you know, assuming he's willing to be
00:05:25paid, you know, $500 a race or some meager amount that B.A.R. would be willing to have
00:05:30him back.
00:05:37A bit ragged at times, but Jacques Villeneuve easily knocks Nicolas Chiesa off the top spot
00:05:43by more than two seconds.
00:05:44David Richards looked like he was fairly satisfied with that time as well.
00:05:48It'll be interesting to see how that holds up as the course of the whole day goes along.
00:05:51It's a 117.090.
00:05:54Has Jacques Villeneuve atop the charts for a brief time?
00:05:58We'll come back with more qualifying from Hockenheim in just a moment.
00:06:08Speed Channel's coverage of Formula One is brought to you by BMW.
00:06:11Visit your local BMW center for a test drive.
00:06:15BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:06:17Welcome back to qualifying at Hockenheim.
00:06:22German fans out in force because they've got plenty of drivers to root for in the Schumacher
00:06:27brothers.
00:06:28Nick Heitfeld, Heinz-Herrl Prensen.
00:06:30For right now on our track, it is a minority, Jas Verstappen.
00:06:36He should be able to out-qualify his new teammate, Nicholas Chiesa, pretty easily, having had a lot
00:06:42of Formula One experience.
00:06:47Yep.
00:06:48Verstappen made his debut in the sport in 1994.
00:06:51This will be his 103rd start.
00:06:53It's hard to believe that he's had 103rd, this will be his 103rd Grand Prix.
00:06:56He got his break in Formula One by virtue of JJ Leto's awful accident at Silverstone when
00:07:02he signed to Banneton, broke JJ Leto's neck.
00:07:07And Verstappen was signed on to Banneton as the test driver.
00:07:10Because of that situation, he was elevated straight into the race car, dumped straight
00:07:15into Formula One, and I think he did a pretty stout job, I have to say, in 94.
00:07:21And you were there, right with him.
00:07:24He was my man, yeah.
00:07:26Well, it might explain why in 102 Grand Prix, you can't drop your guard for a second, can
00:07:34you?
00:07:35Boy, he sets you up and just throws you on the rocks.
00:07:38And of course, this is also where he had that, both he and you together had that infamous
00:07:44pit stop with the flame-on special where it caught fire in the pits and very brief but
00:07:51spectacular fire.
00:07:55Second fastest, 119.023, and only about a tenth and a half faster than Nicolas Chiesa,
00:08:02which is kind of surprising.
00:08:03Nicolas Chiesa must be pretty happy with that, the amount of time he's had in the car to be
00:08:06less than a tenth slower than the Ausverstappen.
00:08:09Yeah, Chiesa's time at 119.174.
00:08:13There's Verstappen's time just popped up on the screen there, 19.023.
00:08:17So, a pretty stout job.
00:08:23Kimi Räikkönen just using one of the airlines in the McLaren garage to cool his
00:08:28something self down a little bit.
00:08:31Where are you going with that?
00:08:32Yeah, I was going to say, where are you going with that?
00:08:33Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan.
00:08:37I think it's time to move on, gentlemen.
00:08:38Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan.
00:08:42What a year.
00:08:42You know, he's only qualified in the top ten twice this year, I believe.
00:08:47He's got that victory from Brazil.
00:08:49A lot of talk about the fact that he had to renegotiate his contract with Eddie Jordan
00:08:54and that basically he went from being paid ten million.
00:08:57I think he's only actually gotten a couple million of that, and I think they've even allowed
00:09:00him to sell some of the signage on the car, trying to make up the excess money.
00:09:07Eddie Jordan was supposed to have an option on him for next year, and that's likely to disappear.
00:09:11Yeah, well, Giancarlo Fisichella 16.6.
00:09:16He has set the fastest first sector time of the day so far.
00:09:19Prior to that, it was Jacques Villeneuve of the 16.8, so already point toe up on Villeneuve's
00:09:23time in the first sector.
00:09:27Well, Fisichella also a lot of races under his belt.
00:09:30This will be 119th start.
00:09:31Got one win under it, and that, of course, was the Brazilian race this year,
00:09:34which was a somewhat fortunate thing in that wet-dry issue at the end there, but nevertheless,
00:09:40Fisichella always reckoned to be one of the best drivers out there, but has not been able
00:09:44to showcase his talent very well in the last couple of years with the teams he's been driving with.
00:09:50Once again, only qualified the top ten twice this year.
00:09:53Did it in Austria, did it in Brazil.
00:09:54Brazil, of course, turned into a victory after the complications with weather and accidents
00:09:59at the end of the race.
00:10:00Fisichella came away with his one and only victory.
00:10:04Now let's see if he can knock off Jacques Villeneuve.
00:10:07He does it.
00:10:07There you go.
00:10:09Yeah, fastest third sector time of the day as well.
00:10:1224 dead.
00:10:13It was a 24-1 on Villeneuve.
00:10:15Did not set the fastest second sector, but nevertheless, first and third top of the timesheet so far.
00:10:21Well, that is a really good run for Fisichella, who really, by the way things are going this
00:10:26year, certainly should not be quicker than Jacques Villeneuve, but on these qualifying
00:10:30days on Saturday now, you never know what these guys are carrying in terms of fuel.
00:10:35Well, this is interesting.
00:10:36When you look at his practice time from the third session, he ran a 117.583.
00:10:42Now, a lot of times we'll see the times drop because of the fuel load that they're throwing
00:10:46on there, but this time he's improved by almost a second, about eight-tenths of a second.
00:10:51So Eddie must be pretty happy with that.
00:10:59Next man out on the track is Jordan number two, this one belonging to Ralph Fuhrman.
00:11:06Ralph Fuhrman was slower this morning than Fisichella, but yesterday he was actually a
00:11:10hair quicker.
00:11:11Only one time this year has Furman out-qualified Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:11:33I'd like to see if he could do it again, I'm sure.
00:11:37It's a long time.
00:11:41Brown, tight hairpin, the spitz curve, there's the cable camera, shot we're getting right
00:11:46there, and the car just simply outpowers the cable camera.
00:11:51Now, into the stadium, Section One.
00:11:58And these guys have got an engine update as well.
00:12:01This race, a lot of the teams have been working on engine updates for this track.
00:12:04See, traditionally it used to be, this part of the season for this race, an absolute out-and-out horsepower track for those long straights.
00:12:13The team's still working to get as much horsepower around here, but it's nowhere near as quick as it used to be.
00:12:19Well, Ralph Furman isn't going to be quicker than his teammate today.
00:12:21He was quicker yesterday, but I don't think today he's going to end the probably third.
00:12:25Indeed, that's what he gets, and he'll move both of the Minardis down a notch.
00:12:29So is Giancarlo Fisichella in Jordan number one, who's fastest?
00:12:32Jacques Villeneuve is second fast for the time being.
00:12:35This man, Ralph Furman, has moved his way into third.
00:12:41Furman's tied.
00:12:45The Jordan team looking on fairly legmatic look on all their faces there.
00:12:51No visible signs of elation or joy.
00:12:55A little lock up here as he comes into the sacks curve, are we at?
00:12:59Unlike Fisichella, who easily outdid his time from the third session, Ralph Furman only very slightly improved his time.
00:13:06What you were talking about at the top of the show, David, when we're looking at the track map, that the cars are actually quicker now because of the circuit modifications through the tight interfield section by virtue of the fact that they are running more downforce on the car.
00:13:20In the old days, old days, only up to a couple of years ago, with those long straights, the teams had to trim the downforce off.
00:13:26They had no choice because it would really just take too much of that straight line speed away with the drag.
00:13:32These cars generate a huge amount of drag, which is the absolute negative effect of the airflow and over the car.
00:13:38So you want to take that away down the straights, but by virtue of they're not having to use those straights any longer, the teams can crank a little more downforce on the car, and that helps the car nail it to the track through those infield sections.
00:13:49About 15% quicker now than they used to be through the stadium.
00:13:52Which is a huge amount.
00:13:53It is.
00:13:54Yeah.
00:13:55Used to be a spectacular track where they would, as Kimmy continues to cool himself down, it was great where they'd blast through the forest sections.
00:14:02It was almost like having two totally different tracks for the drivers.
00:14:05We're going to take a brief break.
00:14:07We'll come back, and Christiana DeMotta will head out on the track with his Toyota.
00:14:11Don't go away.
00:14:24Welcome back to Speed Channel's coverage.
00:14:26You're qualifying for the German Grand Prix.
00:14:28Christiana DeMotta out on the track right now.
00:14:30DeMotta, who was the leader at Silverstone, led 17 laps as a result of all the changes that took place in the odd pit stop sequence.
00:14:40Not bad, though, leading 17 laps through the very first season of Formula One.
00:14:45Now, Speed Channel, don't forget, is your home for Formula One.
00:14:48And coming up tomorrow, we will have live coverage of the German Grand Prix.
00:14:51Coverage will start at 7.30 in the morning Eastern time with the actor free rate show.
00:14:55Peter Windsor will have all the latest news from the paddock, including a feature on the ever-improving Jaguar team.
00:15:01Don't forget, that's tomorrow at 7.30 in the morning, only here on Speed.
00:15:07And DeMotta starts his lap.
00:15:10Christiana DeMotta yesterday had the unfortunate privilege of being the slowest missed in the runner out there.
00:15:14But I'm not sure whether Christiana has been here before.
00:15:20He might have been, but it would have been at least six or seven years ago.
00:15:25Yeah, which would have been the old configuration of the course.
00:15:27Yeah, it would have been completely...
00:15:28Exactly, that's right.
00:15:29And he did say afterwards in some of the post-race, post-qualifying interviews yesterday,
00:15:34that he sort of made a lot of mistakes on this track.
00:15:40He was 13th fastest in the last practice session.
00:15:4416.7 through sector one, which would actually put him in second spot so far
00:15:54if he was going to continue that through the whole three sectors.
00:15:59Wow, now look at that, big drop for him.
00:16:04Almost a half a second faster than Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:16:10Seems very likely that DeMotta is going to be back at Toyota next year.
00:16:14They've been very happy with him this year.
00:16:16There was some talk early on that he wasn't living up to their expectations,
00:16:18but when you figure...
00:16:19Oh, crikey!
00:16:22And he's still...
00:16:24Oh, man, that was scary.
00:16:26Talk about a heart stopper.
00:16:29Just talking about living up to expectations, and he almost...
00:16:32There you were.
00:16:33Wrote the whole thing off right there.
00:16:35Oh, my God.
00:16:35That would have been a...
00:16:36That, of course, is because of that downforce that Steve was talking about.
00:16:40They're coming out of here much quicker than they used to.
00:16:43There we go.
00:16:43Oh, talk about a tank slap.
00:16:45Look at that rubbery left on the road.
00:16:47The engineers yesterday were saying that this corner right here
00:16:51becomes a logical extension of the track.
00:16:53Well...
00:16:54It only becomes a logical extension of the track
00:16:57if the drivers keep pinching it.
00:17:00And you can only pinch it so far before it'll bite you.
00:17:03Boy, it had quite a bit of understeer, you know, going into it.
00:17:06You could see it as he came in, and then it took him a bit too wide,
00:17:09but...
00:17:10Phew!
00:17:10Boy, oh, boy.
00:17:12Great recovery.
00:17:13A very good recovery, which makes him faster so far than 16.5.
00:17:17I guess without that, it would have been probably about a 16.41,
00:17:21something like that.
00:17:21So, this is something we've talked about in the past,
00:17:24but if they made the curbs a little steeper,
00:17:28like they did at Magna Corp,
00:17:29where we saw those new curbs that put very tall outer shoulders on them,
00:17:32it stops the drivers doing that,
00:17:34and really, the drivers have to stay true to the course layout,
00:17:38and that is the bit in between the white lines.
00:17:41You keep pinching it.
00:17:42Why?
00:17:43As any driver would ask, why?
00:17:45Well, you can get to a point where you can cut off the entire stadium section,
00:17:49just simply hop straight over the grass and miss it out.
00:17:51You know, we have to follow the track.
00:17:54Well, a little adventure for Cristiano De Mata,
00:17:56but fortunately, he survives it and comes across the line.
00:17:59Right now, he's the fastest qualifier out there,
00:18:01not likely to hold on to that spot for too long.
00:18:05De Mata's time, 1.16, 5.50, as you say, Rick,
00:18:09first is time of the day.
00:18:11And a Michelin runner, of course, De Mata.
00:18:15A second quicker than he was this morning.
00:18:19Well, he said he was making mistakes yesterday,
00:18:21and he did very well up until that last turn today.
00:18:24About the same as he did yesterday.
00:18:26A little bit, in fact, a fraction slower than he did yesterday
00:18:28in the provisional qualifying.
00:18:30And speaking of a fraction slower,
00:18:32it is Nick Heifeld in the Sauber right now,
00:18:34and he is about a second off the pace that Cristiano De Mata set.
00:18:39Cristiano De Mata set the fastest second sector time of the day so far
00:18:44with a 35.6.
00:18:46Nick Heifeld is fourth.
00:18:47He's going to move Ralph Furman,
00:18:50and the Oscar stopping down his slot.
00:18:51But meanwhile, Cristiano De Mata will hold on to the number one spot
00:18:55for the time being.
00:18:56And you have to think, ultimately,
00:18:57that might have been a pretty fast time
00:18:59if he could have held on to that last turn.
00:19:01We'll take a brief break,
00:19:02and we'll come back with more qualifying from Germany right after this.
00:19:06Back at the Hockenheim ring,
00:19:12where qualifying is underway for the German Grand Prix.
00:19:16Nick Heifeld in the Sauber qualified just a few moments ago.
00:19:19Next up will be his teammate, Heinz-Herald Frensen.
00:19:23Both of whom we hear are under the gun from this man, Peter Sauber,
00:19:27who's not looking very happy.
00:19:29Although I don't know if you can really blame these two guys.
00:19:30Well, of course, that's my point.
00:19:32I mean, who knows?
00:19:33The car, the whole combination has gone downhill rapidly this year,
00:19:37and part of their woes are bound to be the tyre.
00:19:41Yeah.
00:19:44Well, we were going to ride on board there with you for a moment,
00:19:47but the moment has passed.
00:19:49Well, I was talking about De Mata being on the Michelins.
00:19:52Here are the temperatures, look.
00:19:53Air temperature at 90.
00:19:55Track temperature's at 118 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:19:59That's 48 degrees Celsius.
00:20:00About half the temperature that will boil water.
00:20:04Well, the feeling up and down the paddock is that Michelin, again,
00:20:08if it stops like this, they will have the tyre of the day.
00:20:11And certainly yesterday's practice times confirmed that.
00:20:13It was pretty much a 50-50 clean split day between Bridgestone and Michelin runners.
00:20:18Yeah, when you say 50-50, the top 50% are on Michelin,
00:20:21the bottom 50% are on Bridgestone.
00:20:23We're on Bridgestone, yeah.
00:20:24We're watching Frenzen now on the Sauber of Bridgestone's shop team,
00:20:28but I don't think these tyres are just not going to be able to do the job.
00:20:34And Cristiano De Mata's time there at 116.550,
00:20:36so really an indication of the quality of those, to say, Michelin tyres.
00:20:42This is right on the look of Frenzen.
00:20:43He's going to be really neck and neck with his teammate.
00:20:47He could, his time is very comparable to Nick Hyde,
00:20:50but it all depends how he gets to these last three or four corners.
00:20:52Just displaces him.
00:21:04So Heinzel Frenzen will get fourth and knock Nick Heidfeld down to fifth.
00:21:08Well, in fact, he ended up nearly half a second quick, his fourth tenths quick,
00:21:11so pretty good time for Heinzel,
00:21:13but Peter Sauber not looking exactly ecstatic about it,
00:21:16and I think Frenzen and Heidfeld getting a bit of a load of flack here from Peter Sauber
00:21:21and I don't think it's really...
00:21:23I think the car engine package has definitely gone down,
00:21:27despite the fact they got last year's Ferrari engine gearbox.
00:21:29They've had a lot of reliability problems.
00:21:33Well, it wasn't that long ago that they were talking about how great Nick Heidfeld was doing,
00:21:36you know, raising the bar for Sauber,
00:21:38and that suddenly he's now the problem.
00:21:40It just doesn't make a lot of sense.
00:21:42It certainly could be one of those times where they add another driver
00:21:44and the results don't change one bit.
00:21:49Now then, Jensen Button takes the track.
00:21:52Jacques Villeneuve has already qualified.
00:21:54He ran a 1.17.090 in the first BAR,
00:21:59and now it is BAR number two with Jensen Button.
00:22:01Jensen Button had a great race, whoa, two weeks ago in England
00:22:04when his suspension broke during his qualifying run there,
00:22:08so he had to start from the back.
00:22:14Honda's involvement with BAR just seems to keep growing and growing.
00:22:18I was hearing the other day in testing that the Honda engineers are now developing their own gearbox internals,
00:22:24the gear ratios that put inside the BAR transmission.
00:22:27Honda engineers working on that as well,
00:22:29and this is all beginning to seem to me that this is probably a prelude to Honda possibly forming their own team,
00:22:36or at some point, probably a couple of years down the road,
00:22:39making an offer to buy the entire BAR operation and turn it into Honda Racing.
00:22:45Well, his first sector was a bit disappointed, to say the least, I'd say.
00:22:48He's probably three-tenths slower than Cristiano de Mata.
00:22:53Still not, he could end up, he could end up third.
00:22:59He's actually just a little bit slower than his teammates at this point.
00:23:01Cristiano de Mata had a second sector of 35.6,
00:23:09and Jenson Button has his is 36.4 tenths slower.
00:23:14Jenson just hanging on to this lap.
00:23:16Yeah.
00:23:17Six.
00:23:18Wow.
00:23:18Not a very good qualifying time for Jenson Button at all.
00:23:21Yeah, that's behind Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Herald Frensen.
00:23:24And exactly, almost exactly a second slower than his teammate,
00:23:27which is not what he or David Richards, who we just saw there briefly, were wanting.
00:23:33Goes very wide here in the stadium.
00:23:35Oops.
00:23:36That he's up a couple of tenths right there.
00:23:39Makes for a nice arc.
00:23:40Yeah.
00:23:41That really was pinching a bit too much, wasn't it?
00:23:47Goes back to the David Hobbs anti-gravel area.
00:23:51Yeah, that used to be gravel, and obviously significantly better as asphalt.
00:23:55Well, yeah, and all the Formula 1 drivers are with you on that, David.
00:23:59Have we been saying that's what we want?
00:24:01We love it.
00:24:02More of that, please.
00:24:04All right, first of the major players is going to be coming up in a moment.
00:24:07That is going to be David Coulthard in the McLaren.
00:24:11Well, of course, apart from taking a bit more road like that,
00:24:13when you spin, the car stops so much quicker on the aft arm than it does in the gravel,
00:24:19through which it tends to bounce and fly.
00:24:21David Coulthard having a bit of a lackluster weekend so far.
00:24:24David has been quick to admit that he has not been good at these Saturday qualifying sessions,
00:24:30and right now he's just a notch slower than Christiana De Mata,
00:24:34which makes you think, boy, De Mata's time,
00:24:36how nice it would have been if he could have held on to that last turn.
00:24:38Yeah.
00:24:38Yeah, I think he lost probably tenth and a half, two tenths there.
00:24:45Coulthard is out in the spare car by virtue of the fact that during the last session,
00:25:06last practice session, he spun and ended up in the tire barrier.
00:25:09His first two sectors so far are absolutely neck and neck with Christiana De Mata.
00:25:17And if he can hang on in his last turn, one would assume that he should come out faster.
00:25:25Let's see how he does across the line.
00:25:27Can't beat Christiana De Mata.
00:25:31David Coulthard is second fastest.
00:25:33His third sector was pretty slow.
00:25:36And the third sector really is in the entire infield section there,
00:25:40what they call the stadiums.
00:25:41It's 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17.
00:25:45There again with the McLaren and David Coulthard in particular,
00:25:50you never know what their race strategy is going to be tomorrow.
00:25:54And obviously today the qualifying speed is set somewhat by their race strategy
00:25:58because it depends how much fuel they've got on board.
00:26:00Well, you can see the heat haze coming off the tarmac.
00:26:02Yeah, it is hot.
00:26:04In the last couple of weeks,
00:26:05there's been a lot of speculation about David Coulthard's future
00:26:07as to whether he was going to be back at McLaren or not.
00:26:09Now things seem to be settling down
00:26:11and everybody seems to be assuming that he will be back.
00:26:13Although, as we were joking,
00:26:15Formula One contracts written in stone are easily crushed.
00:26:20Yeah, written in sandstone.
00:26:22You can easily describe over the top of that, can't you?
00:26:23115 degrees now.
00:26:25Look, track temperature, so a drop of three degrees.
00:26:27That will help a tad with engine performance.
00:26:31I don't think it really is enough to affect tire performance,
00:26:34but once the temperature starts to drop a little bit
00:26:37and the air becomes more dense,
00:26:39there's more oxygen per cubic foot of air.
00:26:43The device there that Räikkönen is using
00:26:45to cool himself down there,
00:26:46we saw that air hose,
00:26:49it's designed to slip over the axle stub
00:26:51and then they put the wheel nut onto the top of it
00:26:54and it blows air through the brake duct,
00:26:57through the axle, through the brake duct
00:26:58and through the cooling vents and the disc
00:26:59to try and dissipate some of the heat build-up
00:27:01in the brake disc
00:27:02once they bring the car back in after a run.
00:27:04I'm sure it keeps all those bear engines cool too, doesn't it?
00:27:07Absolutely.
00:27:08And it keeps a driver cool on occasion.
00:27:11A multi-purpose tool, as the case may be.
00:27:14You saw the course workers out there
00:27:16clearing off all the debris
00:27:17that the drivers have been adding to the track
00:27:19slowly but surely.
00:27:21Meanwhile, Olivier Panisse is going to be up next.
00:27:23We're going to take a quick break
00:27:26and when we come back,
00:27:27see Toyota number two
00:27:29as it qualifies out on the track.
00:27:31Be right back with more in just a moment.
00:27:33Does Bernie Ecclestone know about this guy?
00:27:42He does now.
00:27:43Back at Germany where we got fans
00:27:45climbing the trees to get whatever view they can
00:27:48of the German Grand Prix.
00:27:51Bernie knows about him.
00:27:52He's probably charged him for that tree.
00:27:54That's Pierre Depasquier,
00:27:56the head of Michelin there,
00:27:57talking with the Toyota engineers.
00:28:00It's Obey Anderson there,
00:28:01the vice president of the Toyota race.
00:28:03And because Cristiano de Mata
00:28:05still sitting on top of the timesheets
00:28:07of P1 at the moment.
00:28:09And oh, what might have been
00:28:10if he hadn't gone off.
00:28:11We'll talk about that more coming up.
00:28:12But don't forget,
00:28:13later this morning,
00:28:14we'll have coverage of the eighth round
00:28:16of the International Formula 3000 Championship.
00:28:18That's also going to be from Germany as well.
00:28:21Coverage will begin an hour later than usual.
00:28:23It's going to be at 10.30
00:28:24in the morning Eastern time.
00:28:26Jorn Vertheim can actually clinch
00:28:28the Drivers' Championship today,
00:28:29so you won't want to miss it.
00:28:30Once again,
00:28:31that's one hour later than normal
00:28:32at 10.30 in the morning Eastern time,
00:28:35only here on speed.
00:28:41Olivier Panisse will be out next,
00:28:43but then it's going to be this guy right here,
00:28:44Michael Schumacher.
00:28:47There goes Olivier Panisse
00:28:48out in the car.
00:28:50We have had another rise in temperature.
00:28:52Look at that now.
00:28:53Temperature, 120 degrees.
00:28:5586.
00:28:56No wonder Kimi Räikkönen
00:28:57is suffering, David,
00:28:58with that heat we were saying earlier on.
00:29:00Now, the guys from Finland,
00:29:01they're really not used
00:29:02to this sort of heat at all, are they?
00:29:03That is blinding temperature.
00:29:05And it's fairly humid.
00:29:06The humidity is only supposed
00:29:07to be around about the 35% mark,
00:29:09but it feels a lot hotter than that.
00:29:13It feels a lot more humid sticking out.
00:29:15Maybe Coulthard striding back
00:29:17after his qualifying run
00:29:18where he is second so far.
00:29:21Clearly Toyota
00:29:21has been doing a lot of work
00:29:23overnight on the cars.
00:29:24Remember yesterday when we were doing
00:29:25the provisional qualifying show
00:29:27we were saying that they were running
00:29:27the car a little bit too low.
00:29:28We could see it bottoming it out
00:29:29an awful lot.
00:29:31Sparks being thrown up
00:29:32by the titanium skids
00:29:34and the, for want of a better word,
00:29:36wooden plank underneath.
00:29:37It's not really made of wood any longer.
00:29:39It's more of a composite material.
00:29:41But Toyota have obviously
00:29:42done a good job,
00:29:43looked at all the data
00:29:44and I think just lifted
00:29:45that car up a little bit.
00:29:47It's so clearly paying off.
00:29:49But a lot of it
00:29:50must be down
00:29:51to the quality of the run.
00:29:54Olivier Panisse
00:29:55who's out warming up right now
00:29:57this morning
00:29:57in the final practice session
00:30:00had a 117.169.
00:30:02Now his teammate,
00:30:03Cristiano de Mata
00:30:04is more than half a second
00:30:06faster than that
00:30:07a little while ago
00:30:08when he qualified.
00:30:11Once again,
00:30:12they're all playing
00:30:13with various fuel loads.
00:30:14You don't quite know
00:30:15how equal all the cars are
00:30:16but the benchmark
00:30:18for the time being
00:30:18it is the very first Toyota
00:30:20that qualified,
00:30:20Cristiano de Mata.
00:30:21Now it's Olivier Panisse
00:30:23out there
00:30:23trying to see
00:30:23if he can knock him off.
00:30:25Olivier Panisse
00:30:26should out-qualify
00:30:28his teammate.
00:30:29A lot more experience
00:30:30in Formula 1
00:30:31and that's for Dead Shore
00:30:32and has at least
00:30:34raced here once before
00:30:35unlike his teammate.
00:30:36And look at that,
00:30:37he's two thousandths
00:30:38of a second quicker
00:30:39in that first sector.
00:30:40Down to the hairpin.
00:30:45The only real
00:30:46overtaking spot here.
00:30:49Good piece of action
00:30:50there later on
00:30:51this morning
00:30:52in the Formula 3000
00:30:53on the opening lap.
00:30:54Watch out for that turn.
00:30:57There was the car
00:30:58grounding out
00:30:59a little bit there
00:30:59but they've all been
00:31:00doing that.
00:31:01There's quite an undulation
00:31:03on the track
00:31:04at that point
00:31:04and seeing a lot of
00:31:05cars bottoming out
00:31:06and all in all
00:31:07this car is working
00:31:08significantly better
00:31:09than it was yesterday.
00:31:10But they run in
00:31:13a lot of wing
00:31:13on the back.
00:31:15See those
00:31:16three elements there
00:31:17so that'll help
00:31:18them through that stadium
00:31:19such we talked
00:31:19about before
00:31:20and because they've
00:31:21got a huge amount
00:31:22of grunt
00:31:22from this Toyota engine
00:31:23they can afford
00:31:25to run it.
00:31:27Alright, Olivier Panisse
00:31:28coming around.
00:31:29Pretty easy
00:31:30by the leveling.
00:31:32Bingo.
00:31:32Indeed, by half a second
00:31:34but once again
00:31:35you have to remember
00:31:35how the big mistake
00:31:36that DeMotta made
00:31:38in that final turn
00:31:38that probably cost
00:31:39from usually
00:31:39three or four tenths
00:31:41of a second.
00:31:41Yeah, but he was
00:31:42two tenths up
00:31:44Rick.
00:31:4535.4 in sector two
00:31:47which is the quickest
00:31:47time of the day
00:31:48so far
00:31:49and DeMotta's time
00:31:4934, 35, 6
00:31:51so two tenths up
00:31:52in the middle section.
00:31:53And I think
00:31:54probably Panisse
00:31:55carrying just a tad
00:31:56more downforce
00:31:57on the rear
00:31:58of that car
00:31:58to help him
00:31:59through that section.
00:32:00Well that is a good
00:32:01time from Olivier Panisse.
00:32:03What did he do
00:32:04this morning?
00:32:04He did a 17.1
00:32:06this morning
00:32:06in the free practice
00:32:08yesterday afternoon
00:32:09qualifying.
00:32:11He did a 15.4
00:32:13so obviously
00:32:13he's carrying more fuel
00:32:14than he was yesterday
00:32:15and the car
00:32:15looks better.
00:32:16Yeah.
00:32:17Alright,
00:32:17you hear all
00:32:18those air horns?
00:32:24Those horns
00:32:24are not
00:32:25for the Toyota
00:32:26they're for this guy
00:32:28right here
00:32:29Michael Schumacher
00:32:30This is not
00:32:35where you normally
00:32:35see Michael Schumacher
00:32:36qualify
00:32:37in the middle of the field
00:32:37he usually runs last
00:32:39on these Saturday
00:32:40the crowd
00:32:40going absolutely
00:32:42wild.
00:32:48and he has started
00:32:50his qualifying lap
00:32:51and he's working
00:32:53at the wheel there.
00:32:53He was working
00:32:54at the wheel there.
00:32:55I think he lost
00:32:55a bit of time
00:32:56going there.
00:32:59Still a tenth off
00:33:00on Panisse.
00:33:02Now yesterday afternoon
00:33:03Schumacher and Barrichello
00:33:04were both quick
00:33:05in that first sector
00:33:06and they lost out badly
00:33:07in these last two sectors.
00:33:12No camera on the rail there.
00:33:16Again,
00:33:17Ferrari are running
00:33:18significant amount
00:33:19of downfalls
00:33:19on the car
00:33:20look at the rear wing
00:33:20configurations
00:33:21that should help
00:33:22them right here
00:33:23he was quickest
00:33:23through sector one
00:33:25of course
00:33:2516.6
00:33:2616.7
00:33:27was Panisse's time
00:33:28through sector one
00:33:29and not faster
00:33:34than Olivier Panisse
00:33:35at this point in time.
00:33:36This is not
00:33:37what the Ferrari
00:33:37would expect
00:33:38to be slower
00:33:38than Toyota
00:33:39and Olivier Panisse
00:33:40and Schumacher
00:33:41has admitted
00:33:42he's never quite
00:33:43been able to figure
00:33:43this track out
00:33:44he's only qualified
00:33:45in the pole here
00:33:46once
00:33:46that was last year
00:33:47and now
00:33:48as he comes around
00:33:49is he going
00:33:49to be able
00:33:49to beat the Toyota
00:33:50can he gain
00:33:54in that last sector
00:33:55yes he managed
00:33:57to make it faster
00:33:58in the last sector
00:33:58he comes away
00:34:00with the
00:34:00momentary pole
00:34:02boy oh boy
00:34:03I suspect
00:34:04it is momentary
00:34:05because we've got
00:34:06Rubens Barrichello
00:34:09coming up next
00:34:10who suspected him
00:34:11yesterday
00:34:11but then we have
00:34:12Raikkonen
00:34:13Alonso Weber
00:34:14Trulli Montoya
00:34:14and Schumacher
00:34:15all of whom
00:34:16have been quicker
00:34:16than Michael Schumacher
00:34:17so far
00:34:18and in fact
00:34:19if he doesn't
00:34:19improve this position
00:34:20this would be
00:34:21his worst qualifying
00:34:23for Ferrari ever
00:34:24we'll be right
00:34:25back in just a moment
00:34:26from Germany
00:34:27back at Germany
00:34:32Michael Schumacher
00:34:33just a few moments
00:34:34ago qualifying
00:34:34for the race
00:34:35here at Hockenheim
00:34:36still searching
00:34:37for the ever
00:34:38elusive 50th victory
00:34:40for Ferrari
00:34:42for Michael
00:34:44meanwhile
00:34:46he's going to have
00:34:48a hard time
00:34:48getting it this weekend
00:34:49because he's going
00:34:50to be starting
00:34:50potentially from the
00:34:51middle of the track
00:34:52there is his teammate
00:34:56Rubens Barrichello
00:34:56and the sister
00:34:57F2003 G8
00:34:59to start his lap
00:35:00the winner
00:35:02at Silverstone
00:35:02two weeks ago
00:35:03very different line
00:35:07through there
00:35:08than his teammate
00:35:08Barrichello
00:35:10quickest
00:35:11of the day
00:35:12through the first
00:35:13set to 16-5
00:35:14remember this is the track
00:35:23where he got his
00:35:23very first victory
00:35:24back in 2000
00:35:26which like his last
00:35:28victory
00:35:29had a protester
00:35:29running out
00:35:30onto the track
00:35:30and which like last
00:35:32week was an
00:35:33absolutely great race
00:35:34he qualified 18th
00:35:36that day
00:35:36and the rain came
00:35:38and well
00:35:39it was a tremendous
00:35:40race for Rubens
00:35:41Barrichello
00:35:41as was last weekend
00:35:43wow
00:35:44look at that
00:35:45a big leap
00:35:46up on his teammate
00:35:4735.3
00:35:48set to turn
00:35:49and he carrying
00:35:50left shield
00:35:51should be
00:35:55comes to the stadium
00:36:01section
00:36:01to finish off
00:36:02the lap
00:36:03and will he knock
00:36:04off his teammate
00:36:04from the fastest
00:36:05position for the day
00:36:06easily
00:36:08by four tenths
00:36:09of a second
00:36:10well done
00:36:13Rubens
00:36:13Barrichello
00:36:14well not even
00:36:15slightly
00:36:16I mean that
00:36:16put a serious
00:36:17period on that
00:36:1816-5
00:36:19sector 1
00:36:1935.3
00:36:21sector 2
00:36:2123.5
00:36:23sector 3
00:36:23all three
00:36:24sector times
00:36:25fastest times
00:36:26of the day
00:36:26so far
00:36:27for Rubens
00:36:28Barrichello
00:36:28and that chassis
00:36:29right
00:36:30that was a 15-4
00:36:31yesterday after
00:36:32Ralph Schumacher
00:36:33did a 1-14-2
00:36:36but of course
00:36:371-14-4
00:36:38but of course
00:36:38today he'll
00:36:39probably have
00:36:39more fuel
00:36:40than he had
00:36:40on board
00:36:40yesterday
00:36:41so this
00:36:41could get
00:36:42down to a
00:36:43very good
00:36:44qualifying position
00:36:45for Rubens
00:36:46Barrichello
00:36:46see Ferrari
00:36:48have had to
00:36:48open up those
00:36:49gills on the
00:36:50bodywork almost
00:36:51to the maximum
00:36:52now to try and
00:36:52help with that
00:36:53engine cooling
00:36:53Rory Byrne always
00:36:55said this car
00:36:56cools very well
00:36:57just like the
00:36:57R23B the
00:36:58Renault chassis
00:36:59dissipates the
00:37:00heat very well
00:37:00which is great
00:37:01for the aerodynamics
00:37:01but all the
00:37:03teams are struggling
00:37:03to dissipate that
00:37:04heat from
00:37:05underneath the
00:37:06bodywork today
00:37:06that's for sure
00:37:07Justin Wilson
00:37:08the new Jaguar
00:37:09driver out on
00:37:10the track
00:37:10and he hasn't
00:37:12done very badly
00:37:13this weekend
00:37:14he's been pretty
00:37:14close to being
00:37:15on the pace
00:37:16with his teammate
00:37:16Mark Webber
00:37:17he's done
00:37:18incredibly well
00:37:19obviously bearing
00:37:20mind this is his
00:37:21first Formula 1
00:37:21season anyway
00:37:23and he didn't
00:37:24race in this
00:37:25configuration last
00:37:26year in Formula
00:37:263000 either
00:37:27last time he ran
00:37:29here was two
00:37:29years ago
00:37:30when they were
00:37:30using the long
00:37:31forest section
00:37:32so the only
00:37:34bit of the track
00:37:35he knows really
00:37:36is the stadium
00:37:37he's not used
00:37:39to the car
00:37:39as well
00:37:40I mean this
00:37:40is the first
00:37:41time the guy
00:37:41has actually
00:37:42sat in the
00:37:42Jaguar
00:37:43as he got
00:37:44to the track
00:37:45fortunately
00:37:47he gets to
00:37:48take part
00:37:48in the private
00:37:49test session
00:37:50on Friday
00:37:50morning
00:37:51which gave
00:37:52him a couple
00:37:52extra hours
00:37:53of running
00:37:53right now
00:38:00he is
00:38:01significantly
00:38:02off the
00:38:02pace
00:38:02of our
00:38:04full sitter
00:38:04Rubens
00:38:05Barrichello
00:38:05he's going
00:38:09to be
00:38:107 to 8
00:38:11unless he
00:38:12picks up
00:38:12a lot
00:38:12for this
00:38:13stadium
00:38:14section
00:38:15man
00:38:21he is
00:38:2410th
00:38:24that is
00:38:25behind
00:38:26Nick
00:38:26Heidfeld
00:38:27Heinz
00:38:28Errol
00:38:28Frensen
00:38:28Jack
00:38:30Villanelle
00:38:30the only
00:38:32person
00:38:33noted
00:38:33in front
00:38:34of him
00:38:34is
00:38:34Jensen
00:38:35Button
00:38:35the Jag
00:38:36team
00:38:36looking a
00:38:36bit
00:38:36disappointed
00:38:37at that
00:38:37no doubt
00:38:39he is
00:38:40too
00:38:40the goal
00:38:42was to
00:38:43bring this
00:38:43guy up
00:38:44and
00:38:44improve
00:38:45the team
00:38:45chance
00:38:46of scoring
00:38:46a few
00:38:46extra
00:38:47points
00:38:47but it's
00:38:48going to be
00:38:48difficult
00:38:49looking that
00:38:49far back
00:38:49we'll be
00:38:50back
00:38:51welcome back
00:39:02qualifying for
00:39:03the German
00:39:03Grand Prix
00:39:04underway
00:39:04Juan Pablo
00:39:05Montoya
00:39:05sitting in
00:39:06the garage
00:39:06standing as
00:39:07the case
00:39:07may be
00:39:08getting ready
00:39:08to go
00:39:09out
00:39:09Justin
00:39:11Wilson
00:39:12qualified
00:39:12just a
00:39:13moment ago
00:39:13in the
00:39:14Jaguar
00:39:14for the
00:39:14first time
00:39:15but now
00:39:15it is
00:39:16Kimi
00:39:16Reikening
00:39:16the guy
00:39:17who's
00:39:18second in
00:39:18points
00:39:19the
00:39:19Drivers
00:39:20Championship
00:39:20this year
00:39:21boy they
00:39:39break late
00:39:39don't they
00:39:40and so
00:39:41far he is
00:39:42not faster
00:39:42than Rubens
00:39:43Barrichello
00:39:43at least
00:39:44in the
00:39:44first
00:39:44second
00:39:44very close
00:40:04to Rubens
00:40:04Barrichello
00:40:05all right
00:40:08can he
00:40:08gain it in
00:40:09this last
00:40:09sector
00:40:09can he figure
00:40:10out a way
00:40:10to take the
00:40:11pole away
00:40:11from Rubens
00:40:12Barrichello
00:40:12at least
00:40:13the provisional
00:40:14pole
00:40:14nice tight
00:40:20line there
00:40:21through that
00:40:21last corner
00:40:22comes across
00:40:23the line
00:40:24not faster
00:40:27than Rubens
00:40:27Barrichello
00:40:28he is second
00:40:29fastest
00:40:29but he is
00:40:31qualifying ahead
00:40:32of Michael
00:40:32Schumacher
00:40:33the guy that
00:40:35he is trailing
00:40:36in the championship
00:40:37right now
00:40:37he is 62
00:40:38points to
00:40:39Michael Schumacher
00:40:3969 points
00:40:41good run
00:40:45from Kimi
00:40:45and I wonder
00:40:46whether or not
00:40:46looking at these
00:40:47times with
00:40:48Barrichello at the
00:40:49top of the list
00:40:50and we were
00:40:50thinking about
00:40:51the performance
00:40:51of the Bridgestone
00:40:52how much fuel
00:40:54are Ferrari
00:40:54going to be
00:40:55running
00:40:55kind of makes
00:40:56me think
00:40:57they must
00:40:57be running
00:40:57very light
00:40:58I wonder
00:40:59whether
00:40:59well could
00:41:01well be
00:41:02Kimi Räikkönen
00:41:02and McLaren
00:41:03thinking we
00:41:03need to get
00:41:04onto the
00:41:04front of the
00:41:05grid if
00:41:05possible
00:41:05to hold
00:41:06up those
00:41:06Ferraris
00:41:07if they
00:41:07think they're
00:41:07on a light
00:41:08strategy
00:41:08three stops
00:41:09we need
00:41:10to control
00:41:11the race
00:41:11from the
00:41:11front of the
00:41:12grid
00:41:12of course
00:41:12everybody
00:41:13wants to
00:41:13get to
00:41:13the front
00:41:13of the
00:41:14grid
00:41:14but
00:41:14they really
00:41:16will have
00:41:16to push
00:41:16that extra
00:41:17tent
00:41:17if they
00:41:18can think
00:41:18they can
00:41:19get ahead
00:41:19of Ferrari
00:41:20and hold
00:41:22we're going
00:41:24to take a
00:41:24brief break
00:41:25Kimi Räikkönen
00:41:25is qualified
00:41:26you see the
00:41:27team not
00:41:27totally excited
00:41:28about that
00:41:29we've got a
00:41:29couple of
00:41:30Renaults
00:41:31up there
00:41:31left
00:41:32we've got
00:41:32the two
00:41:33Williams
00:41:33and Mark
00:41:34Weber
00:41:34don't go
00:41:35wet
00:41:35welcome back

00:41:41Rick DeBruy
00:41:43David Hobbs
00:41:44Steve Matchett
00:41:45here as
00:41:45Fernando Alonso
00:41:46takes the
00:41:46track
00:41:47Alonso who
00:41:49just turned
00:41:4922 years
00:41:51old
00:41:51won't be
00:41:52able to
00:41:52win a
00:41:53race
00:41:53as a
00:41:5321 year
00:41:54old
00:41:54we kept
00:41:54thinking
00:41:55that might
00:41:55be possible
00:41:56this year
00:41:56but isn't
00:41:57going to
00:41:57happen
00:41:57but he
00:41:57could still
00:41:58be the
00:41:58youngest
00:41:58winner
00:41:59ever
00:41:59because he's
00:42:00at this
00:42:01point still
00:42:02younger than
00:42:02Bruce McLaren
00:42:03who won
00:42:04his first
00:42:05race at
00:42:0522 years
00:42:07and 104
00:42:07days
00:42:08he's got a
00:42:12bit of time
00:42:12left to
00:42:13break that
00:42:14record
00:42:14had a pole
00:42:15this year
00:42:15of course
00:42:15in Malaysia
00:42:16so he is
00:42:18obviously a
00:42:18very quick
00:42:19him and Mark
00:42:20whoever have
00:42:20been the
00:42:21lads of
00:42:21the year
00:42:22there's no doubt

00:42:46little bit
00:42:47on the

00:42:53absolutely
00:42:53outstanding
00:42:54watching those

00:42:56going through
00:42:56those streets
00:42:57and the Canadian

00:43:02it's about
00:43:0290 miles
00:43:03or so north
00:43:04of Montreal
00:43:05between Montreal
00:43:06and Quebec
00:43:07City
00:43:07and very pleasant

00:43:19Fernando Alonso
00:43:20the young
00:43:21stud of the
00:43:22year
00:43:22who's made
00:43:24such a big
00:43:25impression on
00:43:25everybody
00:43:26did a 15-2
00:43:28yesterday in
00:43:28qualifying
00:43:29provision
00:43:29qualifying
00:43:30did a 16-2
00:43:31this morning
00:43:32in practice
00:43:32so he could
00:43:34easily be up
00:43:35there with
00:43:35Rubens Barrichello
00:43:36you're talking
00:43:37about Alonso's
00:43:38possibilities of
00:43:39winning a race
00:43:40and of course
00:43:40you always have to
00:43:41be in the right
00:43:42car at the right
00:43:42time but it's
00:43:43not inconceivable
00:43:44but this is
00:43:44this could well
00:43:45be the right
00:43:46car at the right
00:43:47time the way
00:43:48it's going
00:43:48the performance
00:43:48from this car
00:43:49improves
00:43:50every race
00:43:52and every
00:43:52Tesla
00:43:53Mike Gascoigne
00:43:56the technical
00:43:56director
00:43:57an aerodynamicist
00:43:58really in his
00:43:59own right
00:44:00but he is
00:44:01really jumping
00:44:02up the rankings
00:44:03of engineers
00:44:04that you want
00:44:06on your team
00:44:06and Toyota
00:44:07have apparently
00:44:08put in a
00:44:09huge offer
00:44:10to secure
00:44:11the services
00:44:12of Mike
00:44:13Gascoigne
00:44:13next year
00:44:14however
00:44:15he was going
00:44:16to say
00:44:16despite that
00:44:17he's about
00:44:19half a second
00:44:20slower
00:44:20than Rubens
00:44:21Barrichello
00:44:22yeah
00:44:23a good half
00:44:25second slow
00:44:26because he was
00:44:26slower in the
00:44:27first sector
00:44:27as well
00:44:27so very likely
00:44:29he should end up
00:44:30fourth
00:44:30that would knock
00:44:31Olivier Pannese
00:44:32and the Toyota
00:44:32down
00:44:33let's see what
00:44:33he does
00:44:34oh he's
00:44:35fifth
00:44:36he's going to
00:44:37split the Toyota
00:44:37as he's behind
00:44:38Pannese
00:44:39and just ahead
00:44:39of Cristiano
00:44:40Domada
00:44:40Domada
00:44:40yeah
00:44:4123-9
00:44:42in sector
00:44:42three
00:44:43it's a
00:44:45point
00:44:45four
00:44:45down
00:44:46on
00:44:46Barrichello's
00:44:46time
00:44:47and once
00:44:48again
00:44:48we don't
00:44:49know
00:44:49what kind
00:44:49of fuel
00:44:49loads
00:44:49are running
00:44:50so
00:44:51so far
00:44:51the
00:44:52Toyotas
00:44:53are looking
00:44:53incredibly good
00:44:54Olivier Pannese
00:44:55is fourth
00:44:55and he obviously
00:44:57can't be worse
00:44:57than eighth
00:44:58and Cristiano
00:44:59Domada
00:45:00is sixth
00:45:00so
00:45:01both going
00:45:02I guess
00:45:02a lot better
00:45:03than they thought
00:45:03they were going
00:45:04to go
00:45:04this time
00:45:04yesterday
00:45:05and remember
00:45:06Domada
00:45:06who's about
00:45:07a tenth
00:45:07of a second
00:45:07or so
00:45:08behind
00:45:08Fernando
00:45:10Alonso
00:45:10made that
00:45:11huge mistake
00:45:11in the final
00:45:12turn
00:45:12that easily
00:45:13cost him
00:45:14three or four
00:45:14tenths
00:45:14of a second
00:45:15it nearly
00:45:18was a
00:45:18a really
00:45:19huge mistake
00:45:21potential
00:45:23disaster
00:45:24all right
00:45:25Mark Webber
00:45:25out there
00:45:26now
00:45:26Mark Webber
00:45:27who in
00:45:28the morning
00:45:28final practice
00:45:30was seventh
00:45:32fastest
00:45:32with a
00:45:33116
00:45:34474
00:45:35just saw
00:45:37the graphic
00:45:38pop up on
00:45:38screen there
00:45:39track time
00:45:39one degree
00:45:40these cars
00:45:43don't have
00:45:44whip around
00:45:44just because
00:45:49you can go
00:45:49over that
00:45:50part of the
00:45:50track
00:45:50doesn't mean
00:45:51you should
00:45:51wow
00:45:55he's only
00:45:55a tenth
00:45:56down
00:45:56even with
00:45:56them
00:45:57absolutely
00:45:58Weber who
00:46:01now has
00:46:02a pretty
00:46:02serious
00:46:03potential
00:46:04teammate
00:46:04and Justin
00:46:05Wilson
00:46:05although not
00:46:06being challenged
00:46:07by him too
00:46:08much right
00:46:08they were
00:46:09they were very
00:46:09big rivals
00:46:10in Formula
00:46:103000
00:46:11with Justin
00:46:12Wilson winning
00:46:13Justin
00:46:14Wilson won
00:46:15the Formula
00:46:153000
00:46:15championship
00:46:16that year
00:46:16and Mark
00:46:17Webber
00:46:17finished
00:46:17second
00:46:18but Mark
00:46:19Webber
00:46:19made it to
00:46:21Formula
00:46:21One first
00:46:22by virtue
00:46:22of ending
00:46:23up at
00:46:23Minardi
00:46:23last year
00:46:24and Justin
00:46:24Wilson
00:46:25had to wait
00:46:25until this
00:46:25year
00:46:26well
00:46:29that's a
00:46:30pretty good
00:46:31start
00:46:31second
00:46:31sector
00:46:32there
00:46:3235
00:46:3435-5
00:46:35in sector
00:46:362
00:46:3635-3

00:46:38on
00:46:38Marichello's
00:46:39time
00:46:39through the
00:46:40middle
00:46:40of the
00:46:40track
00:46:40I think
00:46:43he'll
00:46:43end up
00:46:43fifth
00:46:44depending
00:46:44how
00:46:44he

00:46:49oh
00:46:50you can
00:46:50only
00:46:50make
00:46:50so
00:46:51many
00:46:51mistakes
00:46:51on
00:46:51the
00:46:52lap
00:46:52and
00:46:52it
00:46:52will
00:46:52cost
00:46:53you

00:47:34that
00:47:34Mark
00:47:34Weber
00:47:34had

00:48:50pipping
00:48:50Kimi
00:48:51Räikkönen
00:48:51but it's
00:48:52going to

00:48:58but
00:48:59there
00:49:00are

00:49:00two
00:49:01Williams
00:49:02to
00:49:02go
00:49:03and I
00:49:03have
00:49:03a
00:49:03feeling
00:49:04that
00:49:04these

00:49:04Williams
00:49:05are

00:49:05one
00:49:06and
00:49:06two
00:49:06the only
00:49:07question
00:49:07is
00:49:07will
00:49:08it
00:49:08be
00:49:08Ralph
00:49:09Schumacher
00:49:10or will
00:49:10it
00:49:10be
00:49:11Juan
00:49:11Pablo
00:49:11Montoya
00:49:12but not a
00:49:15bad run
00:49:15by
00:49:15Jarno
00:49:15Truly
00:49:16excellent
00:49:18now so
00:49:21that makes
00:49:21it out
00:49:22qualifying on
00:49:23Alonso
00:49:237 to 5
00:49:25yeah
00:49:27they'll be
00:49:27very pleased
00:49:28with that
00:49:28qualified
00:49:30McLaren
00:49:31and that
00:49:31qualified
00:49:32Ferrari
00:49:33two of the
00:49:33biggest
00:49:34names in
00:49:34motorsport
00:49:35and these
00:49:37are still
00:49:37a fairly
00:49:38young team
00:49:39jelling as
00:49:40Renault
00:49:40and the
00:49:42secret now
00:49:42is not to
00:49:43blow that
00:49:43sophomore
00:49:43jinx next
00:49:44year
00:49:44you've made
00:49:45the progress
00:49:45it seems like
00:49:46so many times
00:49:46a team
00:49:46nibbles away
00:49:47like Sauber
00:49:48they nibble
00:49:49away
00:49:49and then
00:49:50suddenly
00:49:50they fall
00:49:50back
00:49:51alright
00:49:51now it is
00:49:51time to
00:49:52see
00:49:52who's
00:49:53really
00:49:53going to
00:49:53be on
00:49:53the pole
00:49:54for the
00:49:54German
00:49:54Grand Prix
00:49:55Juan Pablo
00:49:55Montoya
00:49:56in the
00:49:57Williams
00:49:58BMW
00:49:58this is
00:50:01where he
00:50:02got his
00:50:02first pole
00:50:02back in
00:50:032001
00:50:04only
00:50:08five
00:50:09thousandths
00:50:09of a
00:50:09second
00:50:10slower
00:50:10than
00:50:11Rubens
00:50:11Barrichello
00:50:12in the
00:50:13very first
00:50:13sector
00:50:14these are
00:50:15two sectors
00:50:15where the
00:50:16BMW
00:50:16engine
00:50:17and the
00:50:17Michelin
00:50:18Tire
00:50:18is going
00:50:18to make
00:50:18up time
00:50:19into that
00:50:22very fast
00:50:23run up
00:50:24to that
00:50:24hairpin
00:50:25and a
00:50:25very fast
00:50:25run
00:50:26out
00:50:26of it
00:50:26the
00:50:30old board
00:50:30there
00:50:30leaving
00:50:30yeah
00:50:31that's
00:50:32that
00:50:32undulation
00:50:32you can see

00:51:13be able
00:51:14to knock

00:51:32has been
00:51:33the story

00:54:57France
00:54:57there's been a lot of discussion lately as to what his status with the team is
00:55:02and whether he's going to be back next year
00:55:04obviously the more you talk about a driver at Williams the better they do
00:55:09hot day in the German countryside but the German fans relatively happy while it's not a German driver on the pole it is German engines on the front row let's listen to Peter Windsor and the driver one German Grand Prix a warm welcome to our fastest three qualifiers in third third quickest for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro Rubens Barrichello
00:55:37and dominating the front row for the third time this year Ralph Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya for BMW Williams Juan Pablo your first pole of the year
00:55:47I know it's amazing it took quite a long time to get it and I'm very pleased with it the car you know it's been working good all weekend yesterday you know the strategy you know in my car was really good as today we got more running in the tire we were going to race and it really paid off we did a lot of development in the car and I think we got a really good race car as well
00:56:06very very hot out there talk about the race tomorrow tire wear and of course the effect on you as a human being
00:56:13I think it's going to be pretty interesting it's going to be you know hard physically and mentally
00:56:16because you're going you know you're going to be sweating a lot and I think you know the car is going to be having a hard time and I think it's going to show you know the reliability is going to be a big factor and whoever
00:56:27you know I think we've been pretty strong this year on that and if we can keep it I'll be really good for the championship
00:56:32Ralph they started cheering lots of noise two-thirds of the way around your lap but it all fell slightly away towards the end there
00:56:39yeah in the last two corners I had simply a bit too much energy and I just lost it there
00:56:43but even then it was very very close and I'm pleased with the lap I must say
00:56:48wasn't so happy in the beginning of yesterday even this morning we struggled a bit to find the right balance so
00:56:54you know team did a good job car did the job so first row it's brilliant
00:56:59you've done a very good job so far I'm not talking about the championship not talking about the
00:57:03slight lead your brother has in the championship what are your thoughts going into the race tomorrow
00:57:07this could be a critical race
00:57:09yeah I mean you know try uh try to take it from the start and hopefully you know get for the first
00:57:14few corners of right and then see I mean last year uh was a bit unlucky so hope I have a bit more luck
00:57:20with the ability here this year and see where it ends up
00:57:23Rubens Ferrari looked to be a little bit in trouble on Friday but a great recovery this morning you were
00:57:30second quickest this morning and a great qualifying lap from you
00:57:32yeah absolutely I think the car um in actual fact is a lot better than than yesterday so thank you
00:57:39to the team to the engineers mechanics I think we we improve a hell of a lot uh the car
00:57:44um you know I was very close to the pole but I think the time that the the guys from Williams did
00:57:51was quite difficult to beat but uh that's the limit I could could get it was was a really good lap
00:57:57from my side so I'm looking forward I mean it's uh whatever comes tomorrow it's uh it's an open
00:58:04mind I mean it's I have to have a good start and and see if I can go for for the top step
00:58:10where do you think BMW Williams have the edge at the moment
00:58:13difficult to know because um I should ask them uh to see it but it's uh you know on the first sector
00:58:22we pretty much uh matched um second sector is where it's where they they can do a good time
00:58:28uh as well the third but I made a lot of improvements on the third sector since yesterday
00:58:33my tires are lasting very well up to there uh but the most important thing is that uh this morning
00:58:39running um you know like a lot of laps the tar was surviving very well and I'm quite optimistic for
00:58:46that then tomorrow we have to see I mean it looks like we are in Malaysia so it's so hot and we have
00:58:53to see who is the most uh consistent one uh doing the good times and now if we could have a word
00:58:59from each of you in your own language so Juan Pablo Montoya has the German Grand Prix pole for the
00:59:03second time in his career of course the last time he had it he didn't finish the race I think he wants
00:59:08a different result next weekend back at the Hockenheim ring the German Grand Prix qualifying has come to
00:59:16an end and Juan Pablo Montoya has the first pole of this year remember he had seven last year only one
00:59:21so far this season although he started on the front row twice now it's time to start three now it's
00:59:28time to start from the front all right let's talk about the warm-up that happened just before the
00:59:32qualifying session saw the cars roll out Justin Wilson once against a lot of smoke we saw smoke
00:59:38coming out of the Jaguars back at Silverstone but not a big problem he ended up at that point he was
00:59:42going fourth fastest Cristiano de Mara then was um ended up P1 temporarily with a good time
00:59:50then his teammate snatched it away from him and he got P1
00:59:56Toyota begins to look better and of course as the day wound out they end up in uh seventh and ninth
01:00:06Michael Schumacher ended up fourth fastest in the warm-up a little glimpse of the fact that he was
01:00:12not going to be exceptionally fast when qualifying him and this guy Montoya what a shock he actually
01:00:18ended up being the fastest guy in the warm-up as well just as he was a few just a short time later in
01:00:24qualifying session and David Coulthard he was 10th he was 10th fastest which ultimately ended up being
01:00:31his qualifying spot as well see a great overhead view of the track we'll be right back in a moment
01:00:36welcome back to Germany where qualifying is ended for the race at Hockenheim tomorrow and
01:00:54Juan Pablo Montoya is the guy who was fastest today David he certainly was and the whole car just
01:01:01looked great the whole time he used up a little bit of extra road there as he comes down to the very
01:01:06fast turn one and the car looked good through there a lot of people going a lot wider than that and
01:01:11looking a lot more vertical movement on the car looking good all the way down of course it's always
01:01:18a sign of good car when it doesn't seem to be fast that's when they always are and that first sector
01:01:24with just five thousand seconds off there but he picked up a lot for this next sector
01:01:30braking unbelievably late in this tight hairpin makes a really great apex and comes out with
01:01:37really plenty of road to spare gets the car honking down this long straight into right-hander turn seven
01:01:45down to turn nine again he runs right over the apex but comes out with plenty of road to spare
01:01:52car looking absolutely great all through this whole run look at that a lot of people running almost
01:01:56onto the green there but not one Pablo the car looking incredibly stable as he said in his post qualifying
01:02:03interview the car he thinks he's got a good race card if it looks like that in a race he's got a heck of a race car
01:02:09and this is where he picked up the time his teammate ralph schumacher ralph was a bit quickly those
01:02:14first sectors but again one Pablo looking incredibly smooth and unruffled through that last very important
01:02:20sector he was fastest there but we didn't know if it was going to hold and when ralph schumacher went
01:02:25out turned out montoya was the leader and don't forget to today i should say we are going to have
01:02:32coverage of the formula 3000 race from germany and that's coming up at 10 30 in the morning eastern time
01:02:37jorn verheim could potentially clinch the championship today but once again it's not
01:02:42immediately for quality following qualifying like it normally is so stick around at 10 30 eastern time
01:02:47and then the german grand prix will be live tomorrow at 7 30 eastern time that is 4 30 in the morning for
01:02:55all you west coast folks let's take a look some of the highlights from last year's german grand prix
01:03:01as always the german crowd out in force to cheer on their returning champion
01:03:07michael schumacher who at this point in the season had already clinched the championship
01:03:12in fact it was the schumacher brothers who would lead at the start
01:03:16leading away from rubens barichello
01:03:18who was once again having to start in the back of the car after problems with the ferrari
01:03:23on having got through turn one and this is on lap 12 one pablo montoya and kimmy reich
01:03:28put on a battle for fourth place that will live in their memory for a long time absolutely side by side
01:03:33wheel to wheel all through those tight turns 7 8 9 10 11 look at this side by side slots in just
01:03:41beautifully there kimmy reich then but then on pablo comes up alongside him again and just about here
01:03:47forces kimmy reich then onto the gravel side by side wheel to wheel but kimmy's on the outside
01:03:53has to take a bit of a wide line gets in the gravel stays in there but has to give best there lock it up the left front
01:03:59while pablo montoya finally finally makes the pass what a great battle well terrific strategy but terrible luck for ralph schumacher
01:04:07first he gets held up by yarno truly meanwhile ralph would stay out while michael pitted cut three straight fast laps to build a lead
01:04:14but watch this when he goes into the pit he gets stuck behind jock villeneuve right there that is going to cost him some very precious seconds as he's going in
01:04:23and cost him the lead and quite possibly cost him the race
01:04:27tough day for reich then his tire delaminates there
01:04:31has a detour through the gravel but makes it back but then with six laps to go
01:04:35his race ends right there in the tire barrier so reich then had a very eventful day
01:04:41so it turned out to be a pretty triumphant homecoming for michael schumacher as he claimed his ninth win of the year
01:04:47that tied the single season victory record with five races still yet to run
01:04:52it was michael's 14th straight podium and 21st win in the last 33 races at that point
01:04:58now congratulations from his brother at the end of the race
01:05:02just part of the spectacular season that turned into a fifth record championship
01:05:08from michael schumacher very different look this year he's not going to be starting from the front row
01:05:14he's going to be starting from row number three much more difficult to pull off the victory this year
01:05:19he'll be back
01:05:20welcome back to the german grand prix qualifying is over one pablo montoya his first poll of the year
01:05:27and it is the ninth time that williams has had the poll position for the german grand prix
01:05:32not bad just edging out his teammate ever so slightly by about two hundredths of a second
01:05:39take a look at the times you see
01:05:44literally eighteen thousandths of a second separate one pablo montoya and ralph schumacher
01:05:50a great run there by rubens barricchello the fastest bridgestone runner by quite a long way
01:05:54jano truly coming up just a little bit short there
01:05:57kimi reich in a couple of tenths behind him
01:05:59all those cars of course have checked the barricchello on a michelin that you see on that front page there
01:06:04and michael schumacher the second bridgestone car
01:06:08olivier pannis having a pretty good run there in the toyota
01:06:11alonso not having such a good run in his renault
01:06:13and christiano de mada also having a good run in the toyota
01:06:17christiano de mada of course leading 17 laps of british grand prix
01:06:20couple of weeks ago cool tired 10th spot can't be that happy with that
01:06:23mark webber's jag was a bit off the face today
01:06:26uh fisher keller in the jordan there
01:06:29jack droner had a fairly lackluster run in the var but nothing like as lackluster as his teammate
01:06:35jensen but of course justin wilson the slowest michelin car out there
01:06:40well that wraps up qualifying for the german grand prix
01:06:43where indeed juan pablo montoya has grabbed the poll
01:06:47don't forget tomorrow at 7 30 in the morning live coverage of the german grand prix we'll start
01:06:51with the actor pre-race show but coming up in one hour at 10 30 eastern time
