Nearly 300 South Korean firefighters were deployed on Friday (Jan 16) to fight a major fire in a deprived area of the upmarket Gangnam district of southern Seoul.

00:00Nearly 300 South Korean firefighters were deployed early Friday to fight a major fire
00:11in a deprived area of the upmarket Gangnam district in southern Seoul.
00:15The blaze broke out at 5.10 a.m. local time from Guryong village,
00:20and authorities later raised the fire alert to the second highest level,
00:24with firefighters concerned it might spread to a nearby mountain.
00:30A total of 85 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene,
00:34and a helicopter was deployed once the morning haze and fine dust over the city had cleared.
00:39No casualties were reported, but 258 residents from 35 households in the affected area were evacuated.
00:47The fire was brought under control and fully extinguished at 1.28 p.m.
00:52Authorities said an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage.
