00:01Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has hailed what he called a strategic partnership as he visited Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday.
00:10The visit aimed to boost ties after nearly 10 years of poor relations between Beijing and Ottawa.
00:16Carney said the partnership will not only help the people of Canada and China, but also reset the global multilateral system, which has come under great strain in recent years.
00:28The comment seems to be directed towards his southern neighbor as relations with their closest ally, the U.S., remain sour.
00:36Canada has gradually become alienated since President Trump's return to office last year as it has become the object of repeated targeting, including tariffs and threats of annexation, leading Carney to look for stability elsewhere.
00:50His four-day visit is the first by a Canadian leader in eight years following almost a decade of acrimony, heightened by the arrest of a Chinese tech executive, and implementing 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
01:04For his part, President Xi expressed confidence about the progress that two countries have made since resuming and restarting their relationship in recent months.
01:13The Chinese leader described their last meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea as a, quote, turnaround.
