00:00cool I love it all right are you comfortable I'm always comfortable terrific so what we'd like to
00:18do is just get some of your thoughts before you go up what expectations you have what you're
00:22feeling and then we'll talk to you again on the other side so Athena tell us why do you want to
00:27go to space well I've dreamt about it since I was a kid and that was before anyone had actually done
00:35it no I wouldn't say it's been a dream well maybe my wife's dream not that I go to space she really
00:42wanted to be an astronaut she's an engineer at PAL the polytechnic applied astrophysics lab I was
00:48slated to go up in 72 Apollo 18 trained for two long years then Nixon canceled the program rat
00:54bastard yes I almost went on trips real housewives flight but there are so many housewives and only
01:01so many seats and also I'm not a wife yet though you are engaged sure am better than any moon rock
01:10I love you trip not that I'm bitter 50 years of being a football coach has brought its own rewards
01:16why do I want to go to space easy inspiration innovation interplanetary destination I can cover
01:23Iowa in solar cells and power the entire human race from space but by 2250 the earth is out of resources
01:29it's math it's cosmic trip says that when you're up there your consciousness shifts and you see that
01:37earth has no borders no divisions just oneness the Buddha called it Nibbana Kara said it's known as
01:46the overview effect astronauts have been reporting on it since the earliest days of manned space flight
01:52it's supposed to be life-changing it's what God sees so said Frank Borman Apollo 8 lucky son of a
01:59mother but I've made my peace I guess I'm doing it to feel closer to humankind I can't really say
02:07that I'm going for Karen maybe because of her really it should be her up there but I promised I'd
02:14take lots of pictures I guess I'm doing it for my boys because the lesson here is never give up on
02:19your dreams I'm doing it because it's awesome I mean we're gonna be riding on a big rocket I'm humbled
02:24and stoked but mostly stoked why do I want to go to space I have no earthly idea
02:32astronauts were going to the moon almost every six months and then they just stopped no one's even
02:41walked on the surface since the 70s okay let's make the 70s sound a little less like the middle ages
02:48the everyday heroes mission it sounds so noble yeah it's so hazardous hardly we launch at Mojave
02:56tomorrow morning orbit twice and we're back on the ground by brunch trip is calling it his three-hour
03:02tour oh well we all know how that turned out for Gilligan who's Gilligan he's a character from
03:08Greek myth this whole thing has been market tested within an inch of its life you know who they got going
03:14up with him Parker Streeton he's not a hero he was barely a zygote but his silver company is worth
03:21four billion and trip hauser wants to buy it and Trisha Benoit trip's girlfriend well his fiance well the
03:28only reason he couldn't put her on his real housewife slide is because she's not a real wife yet are you
03:32gonna have any real astronauts with you we are major Lewis Kern Apollo 18 this says he's a legend
03:41he's a high school football coach the Apollo 18 got scrubbed so trip has given him his ride for
03:48nostalgia points trip hauser stock is tanking and he is putting five tourists on a roller coaster and
03:56saying they're heroes anybody want coffee I'm gonna make some coffee you know what I'll join you you
04:02good with medium roast and life's light but I want her to sleep well and be fresh for the launch are you
04:10okay of course I'm not okay I'm not jealous really I'm happy for him she's gonna experience something
04:21that 99.999% of us never will it's gonna be this moment if she's gonna look out the window and see
04:32something all inspiring then she's gonna turn to share it with the person next to her
04:39then it won't be me
04:44so I'm the irresponsible one first she ghosts us for months on some undercover thing now she's
04:53pretending to be an astronaut like she's Neil Armstrong or Katy Perry or something all I did
04:58was drop out of high school she's dropping off the face of the planet you'll only be up there for a
05:03couple of hours so you're okay with it I mean it's kind of weird it's like she decided to go
05:09bungee jumping or something and Athena Grant does not bungee jump right like what is up with her
05:14I don't know but maybe she just needed to do something to feel alive again she's not the one
05:20who died she lost her husband Harry well it's not the first time I mean you think she would be used
05:25to it by now okay no that was mean you can't seriously be that mad at her I don't know who I'm mad at
05:32not you
05:39you should have told me that you were thinking about dropping out of high school why so you could
05:44talk me out of it I could have told you that there were easier ways of getting her attention
05:47I didn't do this to get her attention I made a choice I'm an adult I get to do that right
05:52sure like dad made a choice to go off and save other people's kids in another country like Bobby
05:59made a choice to save his team now she's making one and it's not one that is going to help anybody
06:07or anything she's just doing this this thing you're scared I just think it's so stupid I don't think you
06:17should be taking risks like this for no reason she takes bigger risks every day on her job maybe
06:22she shouldn't not after everything that has happened what's the point
06:29what did he call that the flight dick you go on a flight and then you hit the neck
06:52you know everybody thinks that us going into space is a terrible idea no that's not true
07:03they think me taking you to space is a terrible idea
07:08because I'm a jinx because you're a jinx true I am I mean I have a terrible track record when it
07:18comes to all forms of non-land-based transportation I mean these are facts and if I'm honest
07:25I think twice about taking a train with you too oh lord I am cursed you really are you know you could
07:34die because you took me with you I really could you probably will why do you think I redid my will
07:41huh here's to not dying tomorrow oh here's to dying tomorrow whatever may be
07:53the press box is full the board is watching via skyloop and the live stream just went live
08:01dawn what are my favorables we're at 1.8 million impressions engagement is high especially for
08:07henrietta and sergeant grant there's the heartstring factor for major kern and parker is trending very
08:12well with men 18 to 35 apparently they wish they were him they don't wish they were me they're divided
08:17on that and on trisha what's the problem with trisha we're not sure people will buy her as an
08:25everyday hero excuse me miss trouser sensitive hey we're tracking your anomaly with the skyloop
08:34constellation there's an outage in the l2 quarter i didn't poach you from vasos to track outages
08:39i have 6 000 satellites up there fix it it's not about the outage it's about what's causing it look at
08:45this what is that radiation spike now it could be nothing or it could be the beginnings of a
08:55geomagnetic storm we should scrub the launch you want to abort the launch for some potential space
09:01weather if it's knocking out our satellites it could cause a chain reaction what are the odds cody
09:06that this is a g3 or higher put it at 43.7 percent hmm yeah i'll take those odds if we are not aborting
09:15the launch the caterers are already set up start the countdown
09:20what makes hen an everyday hero well she's brave obviously she's got a kind heart if you call for
09:35help you want hen wilson she's the best paramedic i've ever worked with and she's just a hero every
09:42day i mean i couldn't have asked for a better teacher working at hen's side these last few months
09:47has been a master class i think hen would be the last person to call herself a hero but that's what
09:53she is of course i've always dreamt of going up there and looking down on the whole world but
09:57today all i have to do is look up because that's where my whole world is gonna be she's
10:05a great friend and it's a privilege to be her captain interim captain and there's no one i'd
10:12rather have up there with her than athena grant athena grant is a legend three decades of service
10:18with the lapd she's a kick-ass sergeant our mom's a lot of things never saw her as an astronaut but
10:24that's what's cool about this mission right yes we are so proud of you mom we love you mama enjoy
10:31the view have a blast have a blast off skies are clear this morning at macro nova mojave mission
10:39control as we are counting down to the inara 2's maiden voyage trip hauser has assembled five everyday
10:46heroes for this historic flight these intrepid macronauts will travel past the carmen line
10:53and become our first macronaut crew in low earth orbit cheering them on the friends
10:59and family who helped these brave pioneers get to this moment
11:14director cody whiting we're starting our final systems checks propulsion we're a go
11:21thermal we're a go flight systems go
11:29punch it
11:35minus one minute
11:36what's all that smoke it's condensation from the liquid oxygen it's normal
11:48who's calling you it's my office to congratulate you probably excuse me mom you'll miss it
11:56final countdown
11:57why the 9-1-1 car do you know what today is yeah i'm watching it why is this idiot still going
12:05through with this what do you mean no one's warning of a more than 40 chance of a geomagnetic storm
12:09why isn't he aborting
12:14why isn't he aborting
12:16seven
12:18six
12:20five
12:22four

12:39naruto has cleared the tower
12:53come on
12:55come on baby the craft is now reaching max q
12:58what is max q is when the forces on the rocket are at the peak
13:08prepare for separation
13:13second stage ignition
13:14i think they made it
13:23i think they made it
13:24how can you tell
13:29are we there
13:30oh my god
13:38systems are nominal
13:39guys
13:41in r2 is now in low earth orbit
13:44i think
13:54is mama in space
13:55yes baby she is
13:58macronauts welcome to zero g you may unbuckle your harnesses don't be shy heroes get your float on
14:05oh
14:10that is dope
14:14thank you universe
14:16you are welcome baby
14:17great work everybody
14:44oh
14:59oh how's that for perspective
15:04it's something all right
15:06what is that
15:21collision the anara no
15:24we've lost two satellites
15:26three
15:27eight
15:29eighteen
15:30how
15:34the avionics are fried
15:35formation is collapsing
15:37i've got bit errors
15:38so the sky loop is
15:39crashing
15:46what's happening
15:48well we momentarily lost connection with the capsule this is completely routine folks
15:52they're just having a ball up there without us
15:54mom is that normal
15:57you
16:00hey kids
16:02you're gonna want to see this
16:05oh my word
16:07like a screensaver
16:10mission control do you see the aurora
16:14uh guys
16:21brace for impact
16:27anara 2 trip to anara 2 do you copy we've lost 1200 sats
16:351300 half our constellations gone dark or worse will somebody please tell me what is going on
16:41uh comms are gone no one's picking up
16:45no one's picking up particle streams
16:47photon elevation
16:48no no you said it was only a 10 chance
16:50i said 43.7 percent
16:53this is now 100 of what
16:56a geomagnetic storm
16:58how am i
17:01how am i supposed to explain that to america
17:03disturbance in the magnetic
17:04no you knew about this and you sent those people up anyway
17:07you had to know
17:11who knew what karen is something wrong up there
17:15trip hauser launched them into a geomagnetic storm
17:19is that as bad as it sounds i'm finding out now uh prashat uh how big is the debris
17:24fields big getting bigger our signal has skyloop satellites smashing like dominoes fragments
17:29everywhere what about the anara still there 50 kilometers off course in a higher orbit
17:34so the capsules okay well mission control mission control do you copy why is this happening
17:42we got hit by a satellite impact read and an imu problem gyro shot we've lost all orientation
17:49so what do we do now beats the hell out of me you're an astronaut at apollo we have controls
17:55i don't see any controls you know the controls are on the ground it's all automated what do we do
17:59i don't know you're a tech bro tech it bro i mean i guess we could try unplugging it and then
18:05plugging it back in my reboot is so you're saying that we're stuck inside a billion dollar printer
18:11i think i'm gonna puke no do not puke in zero g where's the damn plug my guess uh it's in that
18:19console looks like there's a door on the front okay do it hell i'm pinned here
18:25yeah anybody have a screwdriver yeah i guess something should work it's my apollo 18 commemorative
18:33coin i always keep it with me they make commemorative coins for missions that don't happen
18:40i had this one made you got it yeah parker pull the plug
18:46push through the pain come on come on you've got this in you the closer you get to the center the
18:55less things i took it before you got it cody where are my feet i can't do anything without my feet
19:07we're working on it here i've got a team out at the data center patching like hell will you tell them
19:11we got 50 billion dollars in five lives on the line including one thing trip some of the families
19:18have been calling including karen wilson henrietta wilson's wife okay well just tell her something
19:24tell her uh that everything's looking good here and that we'll get back to her you can't spin her about
19:28the spin she works at polytechnic applied astrophysics lab are we suing them well we're
19:34suing each other okay will you tell her that i can't talk to her unless those lawsuits are resolved
19:38perfect and for god's sake please remove all our media from remote locations i cannot document
19:43grieving families getting bad news if it comes to that
19:51photographers are leaving i guess they probably got all the reactions they needed i knew it i knew it
20:00what did you know i knew something terrible was gonna happen hey we don't know anything right now
20:04she does she's probably just trying to get information i can't do another funeral buck
20:12not again i can't hey hey listen all we know right now is they lost communication but that could be for
20:20a million different reasons let's just take a breath and try not spin out come on come on you got this
20:28you got it
20:48okay okay
20:49You see a plug?
20:50Oh, it's got to be this, right?
20:55You've made it worse!
20:58Plug it back in!
21:16Oh, thank God!
21:19Let's hear it!
21:21We're an everyday hero!
21:31Parker!
21:33Are you okay?
21:37Parker, can you hear me?
21:39What the hell happened to you?
21:40I think his heart stopped.
21:42Heart attack? He's so young.
21:44Possible commodial cord is probably brought on
21:46when he slammed into this chair.
21:48I've seen this happen on the football field.
21:50The player takes a hard knock to the chest.
21:52Next thing you know, he's down.
21:53I'm not sure what to do here.
21:54Aren't you trained for this?
21:55Yes, on Earth.
21:56But space flight decreases amplitude.
21:59Without his vitals, I'm blind, blind.
22:01This takes vitals.
22:02Trip gave it to me.
22:03It's a prototype.
22:04It's not even on the market yet.
22:08Does this measure heart rate?
22:09That, my sleep, my oxygen.
22:11It also scans for toxic vibes.
22:13And just an FYI, everyone,
22:14the vibes in here are not good.
22:16O2's low.
22:17Heart rate's 290.
22:18He's in cardiac arrest.
22:19Been pulseless VTEC.
22:20I'm gonna have to perform CPR.
22:22Doesn't he need to lie flat on his back?
22:24Yeah.
22:25I feel like that might be a problem.
22:27We have to strap him down.
22:28What's the chance?
22:30Hey.
22:31Want some good news?
22:33Please.
22:34The Inara 2 stopped spinning.
22:36What?
22:37How?
22:38No idea.
22:39Do you think Macronova's back in control?
22:40Not a chance.
22:41Their entire satellite constellation is still crashing.
22:44Literally.
22:45There's got to be some way to talk to that capsule.
22:50Wait, you said the Inara's off course?
22:52So she's gone higher?
22:5450 kilometers too high,
22:55but now it's more like 100 and still climbing.
22:57What are you thinking?
22:58I'm thinking that Trip Hauser's satellites
23:01aren't the only ones up there.
23:02Meridian.
23:03Exactly.
23:06You want to tell me what the hell's
23:07happening with my mom?
23:10How are you gonna get them down?
23:11Well, uh, we just need to talk to them first,
23:13and then we can figure it out.
23:15If Mission Control can't talk to them,
23:17how are you gonna?
23:18I have an idea,
23:19but I'm gonna need to leave for a while
23:21in order to bring my mom back home.
23:23Can we come with you?
23:24No, baby, you're gonna stay here.
23:26But I will let you know as soon as I talk to her.
23:28You guys can hang with us.
23:29We got the games, the grub,
23:31and the whole day off.
23:35What the hell?
23:36So much for the whole day being off.
23:38Looks like the entire department's being put on tactical.
23:41What's tactical?
23:42Uh, it means they just want us to drive around in the trucks
23:45and see if anyone needs our help.
23:47Uh, it's okay.
23:48It's okay.
23:49We'll stay with the kids.
23:50You guys go.
24:02So come on, climb in here.
24:06No, Buckley.
24:07He's kind of freaking out.
24:10Figured it's better if he does that with us
24:12instead of in front of Ben's kids.
24:14He's a kid.
24:15Chris was eight years old
24:16when we took him on a ride along.
24:17And Harry is 18.
24:21Get in.
24:26What do you guys think is going on out there?
24:28The end of the world.
24:309-1-1, what's your emergency?
24:34The sky is falling!
24:41That's as flat as he's gonna get.
24:43Give me some room.
24:49That's what I'd call American ingenuity right there.
24:58What's his heart rate?
24:59Uh, no change.
25:01This isn't gonna work.
25:02His heart needs a shock to reset.
25:03We don't have a defibrillator up here.
25:05We'll have to go analog.
25:08Ow!
25:13How is that helping?
25:14Trust the process, Trish.
25:20Gritals.
25:22150 and dropping.
25:25Stabilizing.
25:26Nice job.
25:27Nice job.
25:29What happened?
25:33You reset the capsule.
25:35But hands reset your heart.
25:38So when's the big rescue mission to save us happening?
25:41Unclear.
25:42Comms hasn't come back up.
25:44So we're just stuck up here?
25:46Until what, we die?
25:48That's stinking thinking, son.
25:50Nobody ever won a ball game with an attitude like that.
25:52And I know my tripster.
25:53He's gonna find a way to get us home.
25:56Even if he has to come up here after us himself.
26:00I bet we're trending.
26:02Great balls of fire across the Southland and parts of the world today as flaming debris rains down from the heavens.
26:11NASA tells us that space weather is causing sky loop satellites to collide and de-orbit.
26:16And while they do expect some of this cosmic shrapnel to burn up in the atmosphere, they're advising everybody to stay indoors.
26:23But don't get too comfy.
26:25Because devices linked to sky loop may also run amok.
26:28Dispatch, this is Captain 118, beginning survey of Central Alameda.
26:41Hey.
26:43They can't tell you anything we don't already know.
26:45So we just drive around and pretend it's not happening?
26:48We do our jobs.
26:49Helping people.
26:50And what's my job?
26:52To stay in the engine and not annoy me.
26:53911, what's your emergency?
26:55No, I'm sorry. I can't see your location right now. What's the, uh, car street?
26:59Yeah, I understand the app will let you unlock your car. I'm asking if you have an actual key.
27:03It's in the house, and you don't have an actual key for that either.
27:05You think it's always like this?
27:07I would hope not.
27:09You'd be surprised.
27:10Sue, this is for Shaw, my colleague from Powell.
27:13Oh, your pal from Powell?
27:15Sue.
27:16Thanks for letting us crash your circus act.
27:18You said you needed to borrow a phone?
27:20Yes.
27:21I think I have what you need.
27:25I give you the most advanced satellite communications technology of 1998.
27:32Old tech to talk to old tech.
27:34But what's the tech gonna talk to? Because 80% of the calls coming in are satellite connections failing.
27:39Trip Hauser's satellites are failing.
27:41There's a difference?
27:42May I?
27:43Of course.
27:44Trip Hauser's sky loop. A network of satellites orbiting the Earth.
27:51I had no idea there was this many.
27:54He had 6,000.
27:55Maps a few hours old.
27:56There's fewer now.
27:57Because they're all crashing into each other and hurtling towards Earth?
28:00And in the middle of all that chaos are Hen and Athena, 300 kilometers above the Earth.
28:05Now, we can't communicate with them or Trip's capsule because all of his satellites are dead.
28:10But his satellites are the only ones up there.
28:16Meridian satellites. They've been up there since the 90s. 800 kilometers high.
28:21Above a debris field.
28:23And they still work.
28:24They started as a DOD network for military ops. They were built to last.
28:28So we can use this to connect to those?
28:30We talk to a Meridian satellite that's able to relay to the capsule and then it's person to person.
28:34There's one problem. Meridian is line of sight technology.
28:37It needs to see a satellite to connect and that satellite needs to see the capsule.
28:42So we have to wait until their orbits line up above us and then we have a very limited window to talk to them.
28:48How limited?
28:4912 minutes.
28:5015 at the most. And then we lose them for over an hour until they come around again.
28:55Actually, there are two problems.
28:57You said it's line of sight.
28:59So that means this clunker won't work inside the building.
29:01Correct.
29:02Someone has to dial that phone from the roof and patch it into the call center's comm system.
29:06Someone?
29:10Didn't they say not to go outside?
29:11So what exactly are we looking for?
29:19No idea.

30:11What?
30:12These things are programmed to obey traffic laws.
30:14Its sensors won't allow it to go over double road lines.
30:17If we can create one, then we can trap it.
30:20Like a demon.
30:21Where can we get some white paint?

39:16Never underestimate a good toggle.
39:18Yeah, okay.
39:19Now, we're going to manually start the return phase.
39:23Now, all you have to do is listen close
