00:00Momdani Comments on New York City Council Employee Detained by ICE
00:04New York City's progressive establishment erupted after ICE detained a city council employee,
00:11an undocumented immigrant with an assault arrest, during a routine immigration court appearance.
00:16Mayor Zoran Momdani called it an assault on our democracy,
00:20while ICE said the man lacks legal status and has a criminal record.
00:24Reportedly, a city council data analyst, he entered on a 2017 tourist visa, overstayed,
00:30was later arrested for assault, and nonetheless secured a government job.
00:35According to DHS, the man was detained lawfully and transferred to a Manhattan facility.
00:40He had no legal right to be in the United States, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said.
00:46If you come to our country illegally and break our law, we will find you and we will arrest you.
00:50But for Momdani and company, this isn't about law enforcement doing its job, it's about feelings.
00:57This is an assault on our city and our values, Momdani cried.
01:02The real assault?
01:03Allowing criminal illegals to bypass the system and get placed into taxpayer-funded jobs
01:07while ICE gets demonized for doing what Congress already authorized it to do.
01:12Enforce the law.
01:14City Council Speaker Julie Menon chimed in, insisting the man was doing everything right.
01:19Right, except for overstaying his visa, getting arrested, and working illegally for the city government.
01:25That's apparently the new bar for doing everything right in New York politics.
01:29Even New York Governor Kathy Hochul joined the criticism calling ICE weaponizing enforcement
01:34despite her state grappling with a migrant crisis.
01:38Critics see a double standard.
01:40Strict laws for everyday people, but outrage when enforcement exposes gaps in soft immigration policies.
01:47They argue the focus should be on how someone living in the U.S. illegally with a criminal history
01:52ended up working in sensitive government roles, while law enforcement actions are cast as villainous.
01:58The real issue, they say, is a ruling class that blames enforcers and excuses lawbreakers.
