00:00Wouldn't it be nice to know when you're about to get sick?
00:06Thanks to a new smart ring, you might soon be able to do just that.
00:09Eureka Alert reports a device worn on the finger could be used to detect fevers before you feel it,
00:14which is a symptom of COVID-19 and the flu.
00:17A team from the University of California, San Diego, UC San Francisco, and MIT Lincoln Lab
00:22published their findings in the journal Scientific Reports.
00:25The study is a proof of concept for the Oura Ring that records temperature, heart rate,
00:29respiratory rate, and levels of activity throughout the day and night.
00:33Researchers looked at 65,000 people wearing the ring and noticed that fever onset often
00:38happened before subjects reported symptoms.
00:40Wearables like this could be used as an early alert system for COVID.
00:44The goal is to create an algorithm that can predict the onset of symptoms like fever,
00:48cough, and fatigue by the end of the year.
