Tetris and our chart experts also discuss Bruno Mars' latest release and how it may affect the top 10 in the coming weeks.
Transcript
00:00I mean, do you guys ever check the Billboard charts every week because I get so excited to announce goldens what?
00:05I know I know we're still up. This is the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 for the week dated January 17
00:15Slipping to 10 is mud
00:19As does opalite tonight
00:30And somber to number eight
00:36All right, New York peeps. We're back at the top 10 and it seems like everybody just made a little shift down with mud, opalite and somber.
00:45Yep, these are all like the familiar favorites that are still in there.
00:48You know, I feel like they're only dropping down just because we have one new addition to the top 10 this week.
00:53But I feel like these three songs are still super popular.
00:56They're getting a lot of radio play.
00:58They're not going anywhere. But, you know, just a small dip.
01:01I think I don't know. I'm I just I'm team opalite because I'm team fan and I really want to see opalite make that rise up the charts.
01:10Obviously this because of that addition, we're seeing a little bit of a drop.
01:13But if I could pitch my horse to a wagon, I would like to pitch it to opalite.
01:18I'd love to see over the next few weeks. It get to see a little I've been I've been saying this.
01:23Yeah, I think it will have its due. But, you know, they haven't officially announced it as a single yet.
01:27So maybe once they do, then we'll see it jump up the chart.
01:30But I don't know, I guess we have to wait a week or two.
01:33Well, it's also nice that you for opalite, it's like there is no sense of urgency.
01:36It seems like because without this official release, it's still hanging in, still doing very well.
01:41So it's not like the streams are collapsing or there's any sort of mayday that we need to rush out this second single.
01:45They're obviously very comfortable with what the first single is doing and we'll continue to talk about that song.
01:50So, you know, it's kind of nice to have that in your back pocket that you don't have to really be out there trying to find a second single.
01:57A lot of people cannot find second singles off albums and the fact that Taylor's got this one sort of in the bag is, you know, again, just makes her different than the rest.
02:04Well, I have a question and this is a genuine question, right?
02:07I know we're getting closer to the Grammys, we've got a few weeks, what can we expect in a shake-up?
02:13Like, do we think that Mutt may see a little bit of movement?
02:16Do we think that Man I Need may see a little bit of movement?
02:19Do we think that Somber, Back to Friends will see a little bit of movement?
02:22They could, right?
02:23Does that typically happen?
02:24They always get like a streaming bump, like after the Grammys, because like they usually do performances and things.
02:28But maybe like somebody will really break out and have a moment and have a big jump on the chart, who knows?
02:34Yeah, and you never know, it could be like, it could be one of those songs we know about.
02:37Like last year, you know, I mean, Dochi was on the rise, but certainly like the Grammy performance put her in a new category.
02:42The Niles of River with the Alligators, Alligator Tears EP, all that kind of coming through.
02:46So, it just seems like you never know who's going to have that breakout moment, but we have a lot of people, you know, who are very eligible, very eager, very worthy of that moment.
02:55So, just as much as they're going to be fighting over trophies, they may be fighting over that breakout performance.
02:59And I mean, you guys are talking about what could happen from a Grammys bump, but with a song like Sombers or Mutt, what else could help?
03:07What's the move up the chart?
03:08Like now that there's a music video, should they be performing more?
03:11What do we see help a song rise?
03:13Man, I feel like if Leon Thomas cannot perform anywhere else, I feel like, you know, I mean, he's been working the circuit, you know, for so long with that particular song, there's really not much that I think can really happen.
03:25But I mean, at this point, the things that are out of their control, or in their control, they've pretty much done.
03:29They've done a music video, they've done the radio campaigns, they've done the performances, the tiny desks, the sort of, you know, spots.
03:35Really like the one thing, if you can think of something that could help it out, is some sort of viral meme moment.
03:40Or a remix, perhaps, you know, there could be a remix.
03:43Which Mutt has done.
03:44I guess you're right, yeah.
03:45It was the Chris Brown remix and things like that.
03:46Mutt has done it.
03:47Mutt has done it.
03:48Yeah, yeah.
03:49They pulled out all the stops.
03:50It's like, that pretty much is the only thing that can really jump something up if something goes viral, and obviously that's something that you really can't control.
03:55You need some creator, some whatever, some incident to happen.
03:58So, you know, but I mean, look, we're talking about these songs that have been in the top 10 for weeks and months at a time.
04:03So, clearly, major hits, some of the biggest hits of 25, maybe even 26.
04:07But at this point, it's in God's hands, and whoever owns TikTok at this point, I lose track, but, you know, the algorithm's hands.
04:14I do think the show is going to change some things.
04:16I think, Xander, you mentioned this last week, but a lot of people who are watching the Grammys are going to see some of these best new artists for the first time.
04:23And I think that creates a whole new array of avenues for fans to enter and to find out who they are.
04:30So, we really don't know.
04:32Like, there is no set thing that can be done.
04:35I think we will literally have to see after the Grammys what happens.
04:39And I'm excited.
04:40Yeah.
04:41This is the best time of the year.
04:42I'm sure each of them are behind the scenes planning their performances, planning their moment.
04:46Like, they're prepping as hard as they can to maybe have one final push after the Grammys to rise on the chart.
04:52But we'll just have to see what happens.
04:54I'm excited, though.
04:55And there's some new music that might be rising up the chart.
04:58I am so excited that my boy Bruno Mars is back.
05:01Let's take a listen at his new single.
05:03Hey, I am grooving, y'all.
05:10What are y'all's thoughts on my boy's new single?
05:13Go ahead.
05:14Delisa.
05:15Go ahead.
05:16Because even, like, the minute you said the name, she was over here, you know.
05:20He's already dancing.
05:21Come on, give it to him.
05:22Give it to him.
05:23Was you in the video?
05:24Yes, I was.
05:25I thought I saw you in there.
05:27Exactly.
05:28I was right there behind his six other Bruno Mars.
05:30But I think that Bruno Mars can do no wrong in my eyes.
05:34I do not care.
05:35I know what the internet says.
05:37And I really don't care, first of all.
05:39Bruno Mars is the perfect pop star to me.
05:43I know that he loves music.
05:45I know that he's a student.
05:46He puts it into everything that he does.
05:49He gives me a feeling that, like, pop music is supposed to give you.
05:54I don't know.
05:55I don't care if this sounds like doo-wops and hooligans and it sounds like 24 karat go magic and all that.
06:01I don't care what y'all say.
06:03The man is the man.
06:05I think that is what is so interesting about this is because his music is always kind of universally liked.
06:10He doesn't get a lot of hate.
06:11But this time, the internet was just like, oh, my God, Bruno Mars making the same music for 10 years.
06:17And it's like, well, his music has always kind of been in this world.
06:20And we liked it.
06:21If the formula isn't broken, though, like, why change it?
06:24Like, he's clearly found a path that works for him.
06:26And everybody loves it.
06:27He's got nine number ones.
06:29And this might be his tenth if it gets there.
06:31It just might.
06:32It just might.
06:33It just might.
06:34It just might.
06:35Oh, well, we will be definitely talking about that next week.
06:40But for now, let's jump back into the top 10.
06:43Folded is also down to seven.
06:46End of beginning storms into the top 10.
06:53Ella Langley is locked at five.
07:01Drinking Jack all by myself.
07:04He's choosing Texas, I can tell.
07:09So is Olivia Dean at number four.
07:12I gotta know you're meant to be the man I need.
07:16So there's some stranger things in our top 10 with a brand new top 10 song.
07:21How are we guys feeling?
07:22I love that song.
07:23I don't care how old it is.
07:26I don't give a damn.
07:27I'm happy that the world is starting to pay attention.
07:30Obviously, with stranger things, everyone is super excited.
07:33And I think people are like, oh, Joe.
07:37Oh, Joe.
07:38Like, I think it's starting to click for the first time, which is interesting.
07:43But I love the song.
07:45I think it is amazing to see Joe Kearys find his identity in music.
07:52I think that's really hard for an actor who is so tied to like a major massive franchise identity IP that is stranger things to find something that actually resonates with people.
08:05So I love this song.
08:06I love this song.
08:07I think what's interesting about this song is that, like, obviously, Stranger Things has a lot of music moments in it.
08:12Like, Kate Bush had a huge moment a few years ago.
08:14That song is back on the chart.
08:15We've seen other gains from Prince with Purple Rain and Fleetwood Mac with Landslide.
08:20But this song actually isn't even in the show.
08:23So people were just, fans were tuning in because they're like, oh, my God, Joe Kearys in the news.
08:27I love this song from a couple of years ago.
08:29Let's restream it again.
08:30And now this is higher on the chart than it's ever been.
08:33So it's a testament to those Stranger Things fans.
08:36Yeah, that's the kind of crazy part is it's like this song was around and it was known, you know, about two years ago when it kind of had its first wave on the chart and came through.
08:44And then for it to get this rebound resurgence.
08:46I remember checking Spotify on, like, New Year's Eve.
08:49I was like, let me see, like, you know, what's been popping.
08:51And I was like, what?
08:53I was like, wait, is this broken?
08:55Is this like, like, did I miss some meme or something?
08:58Because there was like, why is this song that's not, you know, in the show?
09:02Whatever going on, getting this huge streaming resurgence.
09:05But I kind of like also, just from a chart perspective, when you get these sort of, I don't call it a wacky top ten, but sort of these like left field top tens that you're like, even three weeks ago, no one would saw this kind of thing coming.
09:17And especially for a song that we kind of knew to get that resurgence, get sort of its ultimate due, it's always kind of fun.
09:22So shaking it up in a cool way.
09:23Yeah.
09:24And I mean, last week we had Ella Langley.
09:26It was her first time in the top ten and she still hanging on.
09:29So how are we feeling about that song having a second good week?
09:32I am a huge pop country girl fan.
09:36And I do like the fact that I think we might have talked about this last week, but Ella Langley just has that kind of not cross over appeal, because I definitely think that she's country to her core.
09:47But she has this kind of magnetic quality about her that all of the great pop country singers have that everyone kind of just wants to root for her.
09:56Like I look at her and I'm like, hell yeah, Ella Langley, like I love what you do.
10:00And so I'm not surprised by this.
10:03I'm excited to see what she does next.
10:05She's been building for the past year and a half, right?
10:08Like we, with the Riley Green collab, that was the collab of all country collabs, one of my favorites.
10:14So I'm just really excited to see where she goes from here and how she kind of like stays true to that country root and continue to grow.
10:23It's also pretty rare that we see country songs like this make it to the top ten of the Hot 100.
10:28And I think it's a testament to a growing interest in Ella Langley and her career and just interest in this song.
10:34You know, and it has a great crossover appeal, but it's also a purely country song.
10:39So I think it's fascinating that it's already gotten this high.
10:42And what's fascinating is that, you know, she doesn't really have much of a pop background.
10:46She's been kind of squarely footed in the country space.
10:49And the fact that now that this song is in the top ten, it's big things to come, I think.
10:54Okay, Xander's not going to do it, so I'll do it for him.
10:57Xander looked into this particularly about like how rare it was for some of these country songs, particularly in the past couple years to get to the top ten and sort of a huge look at that.
11:06So it's on our Billboard.com website.
11:08So shout out to Xander for taking that Ella Langley moment and, you know, running and stretching it.
11:13So he was like teasing that he looked into it.
11:16But I'm just saying, I've got to leave some for the website.
11:19I'm going to go ahead and give him his flowers for that.
11:21As far as Ella goes in particular, I'm interested to see maybe from a live performance.
11:24I don't know if she's like, you know, on a coach like a Coachella or a festival bill and kind of where she shows up.
11:29But I think in particular kind of with that personality and, you know, people who may not think they like country music, I could see her getting a lot of fans from her live performances.
11:37She's got a great personality, so I think that translates well on stage.
11:40So it feels like to me, besides the music itself, like that is a big frontier that she can capture and just really continue to expand her career in that kind of way.
11:48Well, go Ella and go Xander. Let's jump back into the rest of our charts with number 3, 2, 1.
11:55Golden is down to 3.
12:05Ordinary is up a spot to 2.
12:07Ordinary.
12:08I want you laying me down to the dead and buried.
12:13And continuing her longest streak at number 1 is Taylor Swift with 10 Weeks on Top.
12:24So that is our top 3.
12:26Golden coming off of a Golden Globes win last night slides down to number 3.
12:31How are we feeling about the girls taking home a trophy last night?
12:35This has been, I mean, I've been, I mean, I've been, I'm not like, I'm, you know,
12:40Notre, I was like, I'm Notre Dame because it wasn't like it was that hard.
12:43But, you know, I'm just saying this is, this is the time that, that, that next wind is coming with these award wins.
12:49So, of course, congratulations to the writers of Golden and really starting this campaign.
12:54The Academy Award, I mean, at this point it looks like it's in the bag.
12:58So I go ahead and start getting that Oscar speech ready.
13:00I want to jinx it, but it just seems like everything is going great.
13:03K-pop Demon Hunters won an award for Best Animated Feature as well.
13:06So the fact that you've got the movie being really loved and received is only going to help the song as well.
13:11They're going hand in hand.
13:13And it's going to be a golden statue, you know, coming on their, on their mantle in the next couple of months for sure.
13:18EJ's speech absolutely rocked me.
13:21It was so pure, genuine, and obviously there's so much that we don't know about, like the masses know about the K-pop industry.
13:32And so for her to kind of like share her story of wanting something so bad and being redirected, but that redirection got her at the Golden Globe standing with a song that she wrote with a number of co-writers, of course.
13:45But a song that she wrote about an experience of reminding herself of the shine that she has is like, it was the perfect pivotal moment in the K-pop Demon Hunters.
13:59Fandom, craze, mania, love, hype, don't know which word you want to use, but there's a lot you can pull from.
14:06I'm excited for people who may not know K-pop Demon Hunters to enter through EJ's speech because it was really, really incredible.
14:13I'll say also, like, there's some great other nominees in that category, but, you know, I love the song from Sinners.
14:19I love the Miley song and a few of the Wicked songs as well.
14:22But this just seems like the right pick for this category.
14:26I think the Golden Globes got it right where, you know, this song was the movie song of 2025.
14:32We heard it everywhere.
14:33It was number one on the How 100 for weeks on end.
14:35Like, this just felt like the right pick and, you know, it felt very deserved.
14:39I think that's what's so interesting to me is that it's so obvious that the song is golden, but I feel like any other year it would have been crazy to have a Miley Cyrus Avatar song nominated.
14:49And, of course, Ariana Grande, original song from Wicked.
14:52Like, those are two big moments that don't even come close to golden.
14:57Not even.
14:58Yeah.
14:59Don't even touch.
15:00I mean, it really goes back to the idea of the song, and that's why I loved EJ's speech really explaining it.
15:09Like, I think even, I will be honest, when I first heard about K-pop Demon Hunters and we first started seeing the song on the charts, I was like, what is it about?
15:18Everyone was like, just watch it.
15:19Just watch it.
15:20Hear the story.
15:21It's not about the K-pop of it all.
15:23It really is about the writing and the feeling that this movie and the song evokes.
15:29That is why the other two, not to say that they don't touch on those identities and those ideals and those values, but EJ's writing just really struck a chord with a lot of people.
15:42I don't want to say the world, because that's a little lie.
15:45You know, that's a little much.
15:46I'm not going to speak on everybody.
15:47I don't know.
15:48It could be.
15:49But the way that it touched the world was really, really, really one of one.
15:54And, Trevor, you brought up the Oscars.
15:56I actually was at the Golden Globes and asked them about that little show they may perform at.
16:01Awards season has to be crazy for you guys.
16:03How's it been to go from show to show to show?
16:06It's been.
16:07It's been.
16:08It's been.
16:09It's been something.
16:10It's been great.
16:11Grateful.
16:12Definitely grateful.
16:13Can't complain.
16:14It's an honor.
16:15It's an honor.
16:16And, I mean, you had to meet some really cool people.
16:18So, what's been like the biggest Starstruck moment so far at like a show like this?
16:23Many.
16:24What do we do?
16:25There's so many.
16:26There's so many, yeah.
16:27Bad Bunny was so cool.
16:28You met Bad Bunny?
16:29SNL.
16:30Yeah.
16:31That was fun.
16:32Awards.
16:33Like, who have you met?
16:34Awards season?
16:35With Ariana at the Governor's Awards.
16:38Ariana Grande.
16:39Oh my God.
16:40She's so nice.
16:41She's beautiful.
16:42I asked her about what interface and stuff she uses.
16:46Like, she's like a producer herself.
16:48So, like.
16:49Seeing both of those musicals do good during the awards show season has been my favorite
16:52thing as a fan.
16:53And then, I mean, I saw Lisa from Blackpink's here.
16:55Joshua from Seventeen.
16:56So, how does it feel to be like at the Golden Globes in these shows and see K-Pop so well represented?
17:00It's just, yeah.
17:01Go for it.
17:02I mean, as the expert on K-Pop here.
17:07It's refreshing.
17:08So refreshing.
17:09No, no.
17:10It's amazing.
17:11Yeah, it's incredible.
17:12And especially, you know, Black Label is who we wrote Golden with.
17:15And they are, you know, Lisa is with Blackpink.
17:18Like, it's kind of amazing to see, you know, the overlap of so many things in entertainment
17:23right now.
17:24And Lisa obviously acting in White Lotus.
17:26It's just been amazing to watch.
17:27And then lastly, okay, fast forward.
17:30Awards show season ends with this thing called the Oscars.
17:33You know, maybe there's like a nomination.
17:35Maybe you guys are performing.
17:37Like, how does that, how do you even feel about the Oscars being around the corner?
17:41I mean, you saw my reaction.
17:43I don't know.
17:44It's crazy.
17:45Like, I feel like there needs to be an open of the show with a medley.
17:48And you know, for me, maybe singing what it sounds like as well.
17:52That would be so dope.
17:54That would be so dope.
17:56And then of course, Alex Warren moves up a spot to number two with Ordinary.
18:01I mean, Tetris, you said just a while ago, like, is there anything a song, one of these
18:07songs from like Leon Thomas or Sombra can do.
18:11Is there anything else that Alex Warren can do with Ordinary?
18:14He's going on tour.
18:15He's done it all.
18:16Is there anything else he needs to do?
18:18I don't think he needs things.
18:19He's already hit all the milestones.
18:20Right.
18:21Except the Grammys.
18:22Exactly.
18:23And we're getting, we're working there.
18:24So we'll see how that one nets out.
18:25But to be here, what, how, what month, what week, how many weeks of?
18:31We are about, it debuted on the Hot 100 in like late February last year.
18:37So we're about five, I think, I think about 47, about five weeks out or so from its anniversary.
18:42So.
18:43But a full year of charting though?
18:44Yeah.
18:45And to be number two a year, you know, almost a year after.
18:49It has legs.
18:50Yeah.
18:51Oh, it's got legs, you know, arms, you know, growing a head, a couple of shoulders.
18:55It's about to be a full fledged person out here.
18:57And then Delisa, I feel like you were saying that Ordinary could be in like a movie.
19:02So isn't it on a trailer or something now?
19:04It is.
19:05It's in a, a new movie featuring my man Tyreek Withers.
19:09Um, I'm so excited for, I feel like.
19:12What's the movie called?
19:14Cool.
19:16I saw Tyreek Withers and I put it on my IMDB.
19:19I don't need to.
19:20You know what?
19:21That, see, that's, that's, that's.
19:22We're a music show, Trevor.
19:23It doesn't matter what movie Tyreek Withers is in or, you know, Michael B. Jordan or whoever.
19:28If you there, she's there.
19:30I'm not, I'm not necessarily there.
19:32I might come check it out.
19:33I like centers, but she's there.
19:34Yeah.
19:35And then, of course, we have Taylor Swift at number one again for her 10th week.
19:39Her now longest running number one ever on the chart is the fate of Ophelia Taylor Swift's biggest song.
19:47By definition, it's the most weeks at number one for any Taylor song.
19:51So you could make that argument, which is crazy.
19:53This long into her career, she now has what could be her biggest hit ever.
19:57Like, that is crazy.
19:59And I feel like this was a big milestone Taylor wanted to get to.
20:02A lot of artists have gotten 10 week number ones before, but this is the first time for Taylor.
20:06So I feel like maybe after this, they'll start to pivot to Opa late.
20:10We'll see.
20:11But this was definitely a milestone that I think team Taylor was trying to get to.
20:16Yeah.
20:17I mean, she's had plenty of albums that have made it to double digits at number one, 1989,
20:21fearless torture poets department, this one life of the showgirl.
20:24So it feels like she's got that side of things conquered very much.
20:28So it seems like she wanted to kind of balance it out and go for this on the song side this time.
20:32So for Taylor to be in that kind of class where she has albums that have had 10 weeks at number one and songs at 10 weeks at number one,
20:38that is a pretty rare distinction.
20:40I mean, that is something that only, you know, the top of the top have ever achieved.
20:43And of course, top of the top Taylor Swift is very much in the conversation with all those legends and, you know, icons of all time.
20:49So just another stamp on her resume that, like Xander said, I mean, you think she's sort of done everything and what more is there to conquer?
20:56And there's still more history out there.
20:58And Taylor is very much, you know, just building that resume, building that case.
21:02And week in, week out, we just see, you know, how gargantuan she is and continues to be.
21:07Tetris, that was a really good question.
21:09You really gagged me with that one because you really got me thinking if there is, if this is the one, right?
21:15Like, if you think about, I mean, I know there's so many conversations, like, will there ever be another Shake It Off?
21:20Like, that is, that is, to me, that is.
21:23It's interesting to me that you said Shake It Off because I have this debate with my friends way too often on what is Taylor Swift's, like, signature song?
21:32Like, what is her biggest hit?
21:34And I would say it's Shake It Off Like You.
21:36But there's people that argue that fact.
21:38So now I want each of you, what is Taylor Swift's biggest song?
21:42Okay, biggest song I think Shake It Off because I think it's probably the most accessible.
21:48Like, even if you don't know Taylor Swift, that jingle was just sort of impossible to escape in 2014, 2015.
21:54You didn't necessarily have to listen to Taylor Swift or whatnot, but it just felt like that song was so gargantuan.
21:59That melody is so catchy that it just feels like everybody everywhere knows it.
22:04I will say this.
22:05I think Taylor Swift's most important song in her career.
22:08We didn't ask that.
22:09Okay.
22:10It's important.
22:11Let's hear it.
22:12I want to hear it.
22:13Sorry.
22:14I think to me the song that changes everything is I Knew You Were Trouble.
22:17Oh.
22:18I think if that song came out and that song had not done well, there'd be a lot of people in the back end saying,
22:24Oh, we should have stayed country.
22:26Oh, we should have never tried this, you know, this thing out.
22:28That was a real transformative record.
22:29That was really the first song too that I know a lot of people who did not really like Taylor Swift.
22:33A lot of people for the first time were like, Oh, okay.
22:36She did something with this one.
22:37That was a hit.
22:38I was going to say a red song as well because that was the album that was like the country to pop crossover where like when that song came out, we put it on our country charts.
22:48Remember, I knew you were trouble, which sounds pretty pop to me.
22:51But like that was the like part of the like the transitionary period where she became a full.
22:56So what's your what's your what's my pick?
23:01Probably shake it off or blank space.
23:02I think I think I agree.
23:03It's very accessible.
23:04It's huge pop songs that just felt like a song you heard everywhere.
23:09But I don't know.
23:10I'm partial to blank space, but I think it's something from 1989 for sure.
23:13Wow.
23:14I love that we all universally agreed on shake it off for the most part.
23:17I will say I've heard a lot of people say love story, which is interesting to me.
23:21But they say like that is Taylor Swift's signature song.
23:24Yeah, from that era, I'd almost pick you belong with me more.
23:29But love stories is the one.
23:32I don't know.
23:33But you belong with, I mean, sure.
23:35But it's like love story just feels like so you belong with me as a little more can kind of be anywhere, everywhere.
23:41Like, you know, you can sing it like in a crowded room, like sort of at the concerts.
23:45Obviously, I feel like love stories a little more.
23:47I don't say intimate, but it, you know, I don't know if you can just sing it anywhere, everywhere the same way.
23:52It's just her.
23:54Like if you think of her, it's her, but it is shake it off so we can agree on that.
23:58Yes.
23:59Well, I could talk about Taylor Swift all day.
24:01Thank you guys for another great week.
24:02And I'll see you back again next week for maybe some Bruno Mars conversation.
24:06We'll see.
24:07You just might.
24:08You just might.
24:09You just might.
