00:00The picturesque island of Greenland is at the center of a growing political storm that
00:05experts say could spell the end of NATO, the world's biggest security alliance.
00:10Yet NATO's secretary-general had only words of praise for Donald Trump on Monday, claiming
00:15there was no crisis to be seen.
00:17So we are really working together here.
00:19And my only worry is, how do we stay safe?
00:22Against the Russians, against any other adversary, look at what China is doing in rapidly building
00:26up its own armed forces, but also North Koreans and others who might wish us ill.
00:32But Mark Rutte's comments seemed disconnected from Donald Trump's own words just 24 hours
00:38earlier.
00:39The U.S. president has said that for him it's not just about protecting Greenland, which
00:43is an autonomous territory part of Denmark, but owning it, even if such a move meant a
00:48NATO ally taking a NATO territory by force.
00:52We're talking about acquiring, not leasing, not having it short term.
00:56We're talking about acquiring.
00:58And if we don't do it, Russia or China will, and that's not going to happen when I'm president.
01:05EU leaders have scrambled to address the threat and coordinate a response.
01:09Last week, they issued a joint statement expressing their support for Greenland, and France announced
01:14it would soon open a consulate in Greenland, becoming the first EU nation to do so.
01:19For its part, Greenland's government has repeatedly said the island would never become part of the
01:24US.
01:25On Monday, the island's prime minister said in a statement, Greenland is part of the Kingdom
01:29of Denmark and part of NATO.
01:31This means that our security and defense belong in NATO.
01:35That is a fundamental and firm line.
01:37As tensions mount, the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark are set to meet with
01:41U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.
01:46I want it to happen overnight.
01:47I wonder if you want it to happen overnight.
01:48How are you doing?
01:49I want it to happen overnight.
