00:00Tonight on MonsterQuest, police officers confront creatures that defy logic.
00:06What my eyes saw, it could not exist.
00:09And warp reality.
00:11There was no way I was going to survive this.
00:14To serve and protect and escape with your life.
00:18This thing was tearing at camp to pieces.
00:22These are the chilling cases of cops confronting creatures that no training or field experience could prepare them for.
00:30There's something unnatural happening here.
00:32What is this?
00:35For many centuries, people have reported strange and sometimes terrifying encounters with what they describe as monsters.
00:43Its eyes just lit up in the moon and we're like, that is nothing I've ever seen.
00:50If I try to run, I'd be dead.
00:53Now, for the first time, some are sharing their experiences.
00:58Is there a pattern to their encounters?
01:01It was just terrifying.
01:04And if so, what could it mean?
01:06Land between the lakes, National Park.
01:21This 267-mile stretch of untamed Kentucky wilderness looks like pure paradise.
01:28But beneath its beauty lies a dark and disturbing history.
01:33Since it opened in 1963, the park has had a huge draw.
01:38It's attracted over 2 million guests a year.
01:41However, as time went on, events started to be reported that were a little unsettling.
01:48And by 1980, people actually started going missing in the park or are found dead there.
01:53Newspaper articles and death certificates spanning decades attribute these incidents to an unknown animal.
02:02Locals refer to this animal as the beast of LBL.
02:06Over the years, many report seeing a tall, muscular creature that walks on two legs with glowing eyes,
02:14covered in dark fur with high, pointy ears.
02:16Despite the accounts, many locals dismissed the legend.
02:22One of them was Martin Groves, a former deputy sheriff in nearby Robertson County, Tennessee.
02:28They hired me in in 1987, and I had been a deputy sheriff here for quite a spell.
02:33In 1993, one of my hunting partners, Harry, we were both deputies on the same shift.
02:42We had decided to come to Land Between the Lakes for a turkey hunt.
02:49Law enforcement is a very stressful job, so we wanted a few days off and lay the badges down and walk away.
02:57We always hunted alone when turkey hunting.
03:00He went one way, and I went the opposite direction, traveled many miles from camp.
03:07I got tired, so I took me a break.
03:11I heard a vehicle come in.
03:14This other hunter pulls up in a little pickup truck, gets out of the vehicle, and we get to talking.
03:20And it turned out that he was actually a fireman.
03:23The fireman issues Martin a friendly warning.
03:26And he says, let me tell you something, I've been having something come into my camp at night.
03:32It doesn't get close enough for me to see what it is, and it seems to circle just outside the glow of my small campfire.
03:41And he said, it's probably nothing, but I thought I'd better just park that with you.
03:44Being young and overconfident in myself, I didn't pay attention to the man.
03:51I ignored all the warning signs.
03:56I started heading back towards camp.
04:01Martin meets back at camp with his friend Harry, who has prepared dinner and lit a fire.
04:05But something isn't right.
04:09It was eerily quiet.
04:12There was no noise, no insect noise, no sparrows.
04:17All of a sudden, I see what I think behind that tree is a man smoking a cigarette.
04:25And I say, hey man, this ain't cool.
04:27You don't come into man's camp at night.
04:29Come out from behind the tree.
04:31That's when the growling began.
04:41The growl is so intense.
04:43We're frozen.
04:47And what my eyes saw, it could not exist.
04:54This thing was massive.
04:56Between six and eight feet tall.
04:59I was so frightened.
05:01That I didn't know what to do.
05:04I was battle-hardened.
05:05I'd seen every kind of homicide you could imagine.
05:08It turned me into a child.
05:11Martin stands frozen in terror.
05:14He is unable to reach for his service weapon.
05:16His only lifeline.
05:18And I began to recite David's prayer.
05:21I shall fear no evil.
05:23The Lord is my shepherd.
05:25The more that I prayed, in my mind, the stronger I became.
05:29I was able to move my hands.
05:33At that point, that's when I drew my firearm.
05:36And I used it.
05:43We hear a scream.
05:45And it sounds like a pig squealing.
05:49I mean, it's hideous.
05:51Perry picks up some stuff, and we're running back to this truck.
05:54As he tears out of here, that's when I see everything in the camp.
06:01This thing was tearing at camp to pieces.
06:05Fleeing the park in the immediate aftermath, Martin faces a hard choice.
06:16Whether or not to lawfully report that he fired his service weapon while off duty.
06:20My hunting partner didn't want to report this.
06:23He wanted to forget about this whole situation ever happened.
06:26But I've used my firearm.
06:28I'm the type of individual that I follow the law to the letter.
06:32Tell the truth.
06:33Tell everything.
06:33Whatever.
06:34No matter how bad it is, you report it.
06:38But an incident stops them on their way to the station.
06:41We get about a half mile, there's a string of emergency vehicles.
06:48Two hunters had found the fireman's camp that morning.
06:53They discovered his dead body.
06:56And he died.
06:57He died, man.
06:59According to Martin, officers at the scene believe that something had visited the fireman's camp in the night.
07:05And savagely killed him.
07:07It's very hard to conceive for me, even after everything I've seen as a police officer,
07:13when that man drove away from me, that I could be the last man that's seen this hunter alive.
07:22The legion of encounters like Martin's with the beast of LBL has led Parks officials to recently issue an official denial.
07:29In 2020, the U.S. Forestry Service released a statement saying there's no credible evidence that the beast really exists.
07:39I know what I saw.
07:41So I'm telling my story so that if you do have the same type of circumstances, maybe you have a fighting chance to survive.
07:52Martin's alleged encounter came out of nowhere.
07:55But for a firefighter hundreds of miles away in Oklahoma, the search for such a creature would become a personal mission.
08:06Chickasaw National Recreational Area.
08:08These 12 million acres of Oklahoma's Arbuckle Wilderness are home to diverse species like white-tailed deer, bison, flying squirrel, and allegedly one creature not currently accepted by mainstream science.
08:27Oklahomans have called it many names.
08:30The Green Hill Monster, Big Ed, the Chicken Man.
08:34Today, they call it Bigfoot.
08:36In the early 2000s, we started to see numerous reports in the Oklahoma newspapers of visitors in and around the park encountering some sort of large, hairy, bipedal primate.
08:50In 1996, a young man is driving across the Rock Creek Bridge in Chickasaw when he spots a large figure sitting in a creek.
08:58When his headlights hit it, he sees that it is covered in dark, shiny fur.
09:05In 2000, a man, his wife, and three sons, they owned 120 acres up there in the mountains, and they reported seeing many Bigfoot over the years.
09:16In 2006, such stories of Bigfoot sightings lured firefighter Randy Harrington to Chickasaw with the intention of finding one.
09:27I was pretty convinced that there's something out there.
09:31I wanted to see it with my own eyes.
09:33Everything that I had heard up to that point came from my friend.
09:37His wife was a sheriff's dispatcher, and he was telling me about all these reports that would come in through the dispatch.
09:44One of the big ones was he said there were some people that left their campsite to go see a movie in an adjoining town, and they came back late at night, and a hairy figure went running out of their campsite.
09:56Randy's plan is to return to that exact campsite and recreate the conditions that supposedly lured the Bigfoot out of hiding.
10:06So I set up a tent, set up a table.
10:08I even threw some food and stuff on the table.
10:11Taped up blankets on my truck because I was just going to give it the appearance of being empty.
10:17Just shut off the engine, closed the blankets, and that was it.
10:21I had purchased a parabolic microphone, stick it on top of my vehicle, and it has a headset, so you could hear really well.
10:31It's well after dark at this point, maybe 11 o'clock, and there's a certain cadence to the nighttime sound, and you get used to it.
10:40Wind rustling through the trees, the bubbling of a creek.
10:43The night has its own melody.
10:49As night falls over Chickasaw, Randy waits, alone in the darkness.
10:54So I'm just sitting there listening, and then everything went quiet.
10:59And then I hear footsteps.
11:01Following a reported Bigfoot sighting at a campsite in Oklahoma's Chickasaw National Recreational Area,
11:13first responder Randy Harrington heads to the same site, hoping to engineer an encounter of his own.
11:22Randy waits alone in his truck, listening for any sign, when he hears footsteps.
11:27I'm telling you, when you, for two hours, are listening to the melodic sounds of nature,
11:35you notice immediately when there's something that's not right.
11:39And then I heard something odd.
11:41I heard a stick dragging through gravel.
11:45So at that moment, I'm like, it could be a person.
11:49But it's February.
11:51It's the off-season.
11:52There's not even a camp host there.
11:53There's nobody camping.
11:55It's cold.
11:55Then at some point, I hear a ding, more footsteps, and then I hear another ding.
12:03And I'm like, okay, it's moving, and it's hitting a metal lantern post at each campsite.
12:11But at some point, the footsteps stop.
12:15I can hear it moving and stopping.
12:20Moving and stopping.
12:22While Randy's parabolic microphone can pick up sounds up to 600 feet away, it can't tell him where they are coming from or how close they are.
12:34My heart started racing.
12:36I'm like, it's going from tree to tree.
12:37It has to be close.
12:41That's when they started doing some vocals.
12:44I had one of those old cassette micro recorders.
12:51And so I'm recording about every six seconds.
12:55These loud calls were happening, and they were getting louder each time.
12:59In three minutes, he did 17 of these vocals.
13:04And after the last call, that's when I see my first shadowy movement.
13:09I really don't want anything to see my blankets move, but I was opening them just enough so I could look.
13:14I could see right into my mirror looking down the side of my truck to a chunk of woods right behind my truck.
13:24Something put its hands on the side of the tree, and it went.
13:27And then back behind the tree.
13:31And that's the moment they came out.
13:35I saw two scary gorilla looking things.
13:39There was two different sized ones.
13:41The big one, he was leaned over.
13:43Just the mannerisms of the way it was moving.
13:48Running with a stooped over, hands swinging, just a foot off the ground.
13:52That's the moment in my head, not human.
14:02And then they both made a beeline to the back corner of my truck.
14:07With what I could see in my mirror, I could see the little one duck down behind the tailgate.
14:11The big one got to the back corner of the truck.
14:14He stood up, just as straight backboned as you and I would.
14:18That's when I saw his stature.
14:20I had ladder racks on the back of my truck, and from the ground to the top of the ladder racks was seven foot.
14:27So he was this much taller than my ladder racks.
14:30He was big.
14:31He was huge.
14:32He grabbed the side post, and I could see an upward pointing thumb with his left hand.
14:38Shoulders looked like bowling balls.
14:40Just incredibly muscular.
14:43And that spooked me.
14:44So I let the blankets close, and I'm in the darkness, and I was just like, oh my God, please don't come down here.
14:50Randy had set the perfect trap.
14:53The problem?
14:54He's now the bait.
14:55And then he took a move, and he was coming up the side of the truck.
15:02That's the moment I was in a real, real panic mode, because my doors weren't locked.
15:08He had hands.
15:10He could manipulate the door handle just as easily as you and I could.
15:13I was not going to hit that lock button, because when you hit the button to lock all four doors at the same time, it's a cha-chomp.
15:25I did not want him to know I was in the truck.
15:28I'm looking down, and I can see my shirt between my chest going boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, as my heart's just thumping.
15:36And I thought he would feel the pulsing of my heart just by touching the middle of the truck.
15:41So I pulled my back off the seat.
15:43I'm sitting there behind my A-post, and I'm just, I just didn't want him to know I was in there at all.
15:49I knew if I started the truck up, they would know I was in there, and I'm certain that it would have ended.
15:54He could have ripped the doors off my truck if he wanted to.
15:57If I was to get out, I'm free game.
15:59I mean, he'd rip my arms off.
16:02I'd be dead.
16:02Then, in just a split second, the whole back end of my truck squatted.
16:10He was on the back of my truck.
16:13At this moment, I knew he was 1,000 pounds because of how much the truck squatted.
16:18My biggest fear was, he's going to climb on the cab of my truck and then collapse it.
16:24But then, I hear him shuffling stuff around in the back of my truck.
16:28I had two little green propane tanks at the back corner.
16:34I hear those tanks get knocked together.
16:37Ping!
16:38And all movements stop.
16:41And then, they leave.
16:43Even after they left, I just kept thinking they were going to come back.
16:47Every little noise I would hear, I'd be like, is that them?
16:49I sat there till daylight.
16:51And the moment sunlight started filtering through the trees, I felt safe enough to open the door.
16:58The next day, Randy discovers what he believes to be the creature's footprint near the creek leading to his campsite.
17:06That night, that was the moment.
17:08I no longer have the luxury of saying, this may not be real.
17:14Whatever it was that firefighter Randy Harrington believes he saw, they were creatures of flesh and bone.
17:23But as it turns out, not all monsters take on such a solid form.
17:29Here in Monmouth County, New Jersey, sightings of a different kind of cryptid date back nearly three decades.
17:36They center around a psychiatric hospital in the small town of Marlborough.
17:42One shuttered in 1998, after years of neglect and scandal.
17:47When the facilities actually shut down, people over the years who would go there trespassing
17:52would actually report encounters with what they described as shadow people.
17:56They describe these creatures, not as ghosts, but as voids.
18:04These dark human-like figures that move throughout the buildings and also through the graveyard at the back of the buildings.
18:13Unlike ghosts, which are typically described as transparent and human-shaped,
18:18these monsters are said to be different.
18:21Solid black silhouettes, alien, and terrifying.
18:25The Marlborough Psychiatric Hospital was demolished in 2015.
18:33The same year, police officer Scott Davis is patrolling the graveyard shift,
18:38less than 15 miles from where the hospital once stood.
18:42I wanted to get into the police force ever since I was a little kid.
18:46I joined the United States Marine Corps and did two deployments.
18:49And when I got back, I finally got to become a police officer.
18:53Because of local budget constraints and a sleepy crime blotter, Officer Davis rides alone.
19:01I'm kind of just relaxed, doing my patrol, going up and down the block.
19:05This night was so quiet, you could hear a pain drop.
19:08Battle changes when a home invasion call comes over the radio.
19:12It's 2.30, 3 o'clock in the morning.
19:16The comments from the 911 operator, it said,
19:20there are several men inside this home breaking in and stealing.
19:24I head over there.
19:30The house is just basically a bungalow.
19:33The front door had stuff stacked up in front of it.
19:36Things all throughout the yard, like collected junk, piled up against the house.
19:41I was already like, maybe this is like some kind of weird hoarder house that I'm going to walk into.
19:45So now I'm walking to the end of this bungalow, around the side of the house.
19:51And there's a storm door that's completely unblocked.
19:55So I knock real loud on the door and I announce myself.
20:00And I don't hear anything.
20:02I turn the knob and I push it open and I can see into the house now.
20:06And I see this old man and he's sitting on a recliner.
20:12And the guy says, do you see them?
20:15And I'm looking around and I don't know what I'm supposed to see.
20:19And he's like, there is something in my house.
20:28Monmouth County Police Officer Scott Davis has just responded to a home invasion call.
20:33After speaking with the terrified homeowner, he starts searching for possible assailants still hiding in the man's home.
20:44For all I know, they told him to be quiet under threat and now they're hiding somewhere waiting.
20:52It's a very small house.
20:56Past the living room, there's just another small hallway.
21:03There was a tiny bathroom.
21:05So I went in there.
21:11I checked behind the curtain.
21:15Nothing. It's fine.
21:19I go to a back bedroom straight ahead of me.
21:23I tried to flip a light on.
21:25The light didn't work.
21:26There's a bed with like a bed rail on it and just more of the same.
21:31There's nobody there.
21:32There's no broken windows.
21:33There's no inkling that there is anybody else in this house whatsoever.
21:41I go back into the living room where the gentleman is still sitting and he goes, did you find them?
21:46And I said, sir, there's nobody here.
21:48Is there anybody that I can call for you?
21:51Maybe a family member or a friend?
21:53And he got short with me.
21:54He was like, no, there's nobody you can call.
21:56I needed help and you can't help me.
22:01Officer Davis leaves the man's house and continues his overnight patrol of the area.
22:06But after his shift is over, his encounter with the homeowner sticks with him.
22:10He was so adamant about seeing people there.
22:14I remember just thinking, this guy feels like he's telling the truth.
22:18Even though we have never found anything, I feel like he is actually experiencing something.
22:24The following night, Officer Davis patrols nearby the old man's house.
22:29That was such a strange call.
22:31If this guy calls again, I really want to be close because maybe I did miss something.
22:35So, the second night is between probably 2.30 and 3 in the morning.
22:42Almost exact same time from the night before.
22:45The familiar click of the computer hits.
22:49And sure enough, it's this address again.
22:52And it's the exact same call.
23:00I parked my police car in the same exact spot.
23:03But instead of taking my time on approach this time, I just made a beeline.
23:09And as I'm passing by the window to get around the house, I hear talking.
23:17The man from the night before in another voice that I can't quite make out.
23:23So, I went really quick.
23:25I didn't knock or announce myself.
23:29And I stepped into the house.
23:32And this is when I just got stopped dead in my tracks.
23:39As I'm looking right where I was standing the night before,
23:42there's about a seven or eight foot black shadow looming over this gentleman who's still in that same chair.
23:49I remember looking up and down like that.
23:56It was just crazy.
24:01I have never, ever seen anything like that before.
24:04My flashlight hits this object.
24:08It's like the light is getting swallowed up.
24:11It takes a lot to stop me in my tracks.
24:13And I was just like, frozen.
24:18What am I looking at?
24:21What is this?
24:22So, I start walking towards it.
24:36It starts moving back down the hallway into the area that I had searched the night before.
24:45And then all of a sudden, as it gets down to the end of the hallway,
24:49it just dissipates and it's gone.
24:52There is something else happening here.
24:57And it is not related to police work or first aid call.
25:00There's something unnatural happening here.
25:04So, now I come back where the man is in the chair again.
25:08I look down at him really quick.
25:10And he looks up and he goes, you see it?
25:12And I was like, oh, my God, what is happening here?
25:15And he said, I don't know what is happening here.
25:19But I needed somebody else to see this because I'm experiencing it.
25:23And now you know that I'm not crazy.
25:25They said, I don't know how to help you in this situation.
25:29Are there relatives or a family member or somebody I can call to help you?
25:34He gave me his sister's telephone number.
25:36And he's like, you can call her in the morning and talk to her about this.
25:39The next day, Officer Davis follows up with the man's sister.
25:45I started to tell her the story.
25:46She goes, you can stop.
25:48I know what happened.
25:50That's why we all moved.
25:53She and her daughter were experiencing these things.
25:55It was 100% something that they could not figure out, didn't know what to do about, and left.
26:03But he refuses to leave that house.
26:08Six months later, Officer Davis drives by the home and sees a for sale sign in the front yard.
26:14It was completely renovated and cleaned up.
26:16And there has not been another call like that since to that location.
26:20Since both men saw the same figure at the same time, and there was nothing that could have cast that shadow,
26:29it's probably not an hallucination on their part or a psychosis because they shared it.
26:37Although Officer Davis isn't certain what kind of monster he saw,
26:41he knows that it, like other cryptids, can't easily be explained by science.
26:46This is the number one craziest call that I've ever been to,
26:53where something happened that was so unexplainable and so outside the box
26:56that I'm not sure at any time in my future in police work
27:00that I'll ever come across anything quite like this again.
27:08In the late 1960s, credible reports begin to surface across the United States
27:13of encounters with a monster described as half-human, half-goat, the Goatman.
27:22Dallas saw reports of a seven-foot-tall Goatman terrorizing couples
27:26by jumping on the hoods of their cars.
27:30Many people think this is just a prank,
27:32but after law enforcement officers find an 18-inch gash on a vehicle,
27:36they open a formal investigation.
27:37Two years later, a more violent variant of the creature
27:42emerges in Prince George's County, Maryland.
27:46A teenage girl, April Edwards,
27:49says she saw this massive creature walking on hind legs
27:53and then later that night finds her puppy decapitated.
27:57The story makes headlines in the Washington Post.
27:59Decades after those first vivid reports,
28:04sightings of the Goatman seemed to fade.
28:07But one cold night in Trinidad, Colorado,
28:11the myth stepped out of the past
28:13and into the glare of patrolman Gil Sanchez's headlights.
28:19My shift started at 4 o'clock
28:21and ended at 2.30.
28:24It's a huge, huge territory.
28:31You look for things that are out of the ordinary.
28:34I was making my way back into town on the county road.
28:39There was, like, zero traffic out there.
28:41I want to say it was about 10 o'clock at night.
28:43This took place.
28:47Out of my peripheral vision to my left on the driver's side,
28:50I see something coming towards my vehicle.
28:53All I see is this figure in the headlights.
28:59I was doing about 45, 50 miles an hour.
29:03And when I hit that thing,
29:08it literally put my unit up on two wheels.
29:15I could feel the front tire and the back tire go over this,
29:19and I could feel scraping underneath my unit.
29:23Once I feel my unit finally set down on all fours,
29:28I mean, I lock up the brakes.
29:31I'd probably skidder for about 25, 30 feet.
29:36My first thought is, what was that?
29:39What did I hit?
29:40At the speed I was going,
29:42this thing should either be severely injured or, worse, it should be dead.
29:46My other thought is,
29:51I just crashed and totaled the front end of this unit.
29:55I get out of my unit
29:57and see the damage before I called anything in.
30:00And I'm looking at my unit.
30:07There is no damage to this unit.
30:11I mean, none.
30:12What's more,
30:20there is no evidence of a body.
30:22I'm looking up the side of the road,
30:24and I don't see anything.
30:28I didn't see any blood.
30:29I didn't see any kind of evidence
30:31that something had been hit,
30:33except for my skid marks.
30:35But as Deputy Sanchez stands in the road,
30:39he hears a noise that snaps him to attention.
30:45I can hear it moving through the brush.
30:57I can hear footsteps,
31:00but I don't see anything.
31:05I heard something rather large,
31:16like it was coming at me.
31:22I just have this overwhelming sensation of just dread.
31:29I was like, carrying a 9mm,
31:32I just hit this thing with a Dodge Durango.
31:34I don't think I'm going to be doing any damage
31:36with this pistol.
31:39Here's the possibility
31:40I'm not going to come out of this one.
31:47I was like,
31:48you need to get out of here.
31:56In the remote town of Trinidad, Colorado,
31:59Deputy Gil Sanchez
32:00has struck an unknown creature
32:02with his cruiser.
32:05There's no body on the road.
32:08Gil realizes that whatever he hit
32:10is still out there.
32:13He scrambles back into his cruiser.
32:16Then, to his horror,
32:19he sees the beast.
32:20What I saw was the best way I can describe it
32:25is half man and half goat.
32:28The upper part of its body was that of human,
32:32and the bottom half was that of a goat.
32:37What is this?
32:38I mean, where did it come from?
32:40This shouldn't exist.
32:41I had two hours left on my shift.
32:50I just stood in the office.
32:52I didn't go anywhere.
32:56Days later,
32:57Deputy Sanchez is summoned to the sheriff's office
33:00to give his account.
33:01So that's when I went to the office
33:03and explained to him what took place.
33:07And I figured, you know what?
33:08These guys are going to laugh at me.
33:09They're going to put me on leave
33:12because I'm thinking I'm nuts.
33:14The sheriff sits down in his chair.
33:16He says,
33:16I believe you.
33:17Before he got into law enforcement,
33:21he was a coal miner.
33:24He says,
33:26I'm in the 70s.
33:27When I was working in the mine,
33:28he said,
33:28I remember hearing some of the miners
33:30talk about seeing a goat man
33:33running around the area.
33:35But for Deputy Sanchez,
33:37the implications of the chief's statement
33:39has a ripple effect.
33:41You know, as an officer,
33:42you know how to categorize everything,
33:44you know, when you're dealing with stuff.
33:45And I was like,
33:45where do you put this?
33:48What I hit,
33:50it shouldn't,
33:52it shouldn't even exist.
33:54It shouldn't even be part of this world.
33:58If you want to talk about
33:59breaking somebody's paradigm,
34:01I mean, I was broken.
34:04Officer Sanchez's encounter with the goat man
34:07left him questioning everything
34:09he once believed.
34:13While nearly a thousand miles away,
34:15deep in the forests of Washington state,
34:18one officer's search for answers
34:20puts him in the crosshairs
34:22of another legendary creature of lore.
34:26Washington state's Olympic peninsula
34:28is the most diverse tract of forested land
34:31in the lower 48.
34:33It also contains some of the country's
34:36least explored terrain,
34:38the perfect home habitat
34:39for a creature whose elusive existence
34:41has been locally recognized for centuries.
34:45Bigfoot.
34:48Natives in this area
34:49have passed down stories of this monster
34:51for hundreds of years.
34:53They refer to them as forest giants
34:55or wild men.
34:57A group called the Bigfoot Field Research Organization
35:01also tracks sightings.
35:03They've documented 114 encounters
35:06on the Olympic Peninsula.
35:09The push police officer,
35:11Rich Germo,
35:11dismisses such reports
35:13until he allegedly
35:15has his own chilling encounter
35:17in 2000.
35:19My shift started at 7 p.m.
35:22Kind of a crummy shift, really.
35:24Not a lot goes on anyways
35:25most of the time.
35:26After 1 p.m., midnight,
35:27nothing happened.
35:32I was driving into work.
35:34It was still fully daylight.
35:37I don't remember anything in particular
35:39about that day
35:40other than that incident
35:41because that stuck with me forever.
35:43I'm driving down the road
35:50and this thing pops out in front of me.
35:53And then it disappeared in the bushes.
35:57It kind of glided, I would say.
36:00It didn't walk like a human being.
36:03Officer Germo scans the landscape.
36:08The area is deserted.
36:10I was trying to process
36:11what I had seen.
36:12I was confused
36:13because I knew what it was
36:15by looking at it.
36:17But it couldn't be that
36:19because those aren't real.
36:21So I just drove right to the office.
36:23There were three people there.
36:25They knew something happened to me.
36:26They could see it on my face.
36:28And I said,
36:28I just seen a Bigfoot
36:29at Lonesome Creek.
36:36While driving on patrol
36:38in Washington State,
36:39Officer Rich Germo
36:41claims he nearly collides
36:43with a creature of local legend,
36:45an eight-foot-tall Bigfoot.
36:48Following his encounter,
36:49he heads to the station.
36:51My supervisor, he was there,
36:54another fellow cop,
36:56and then Matt Murphy,
36:58who was a deputy
36:59for the Colombe County Sheriff's Office,
37:00was there.
37:02At first,
37:02they kind of chuckled at me
37:03and joked a little bit.
37:05And then they asked questions.
37:08Their fellow cop drove down there
37:09and went and looked for tracks
37:11where I said I'd seen it.
37:12I was too scared to go down there
37:13and walk around
37:13because I was rattled a little bit.
37:15I didn't want to go chasing
37:16after this thing.
37:17And he didn't find anything.
37:21But he wasn't discounting
37:22what I was telling him.
37:23Obviously, he saw what I saw.
37:26Then they told me
37:27there was another incident
37:28that happened in that area
37:29not very long before that
37:31called the Gene Sampson incident.
37:34According to the paper's
37:35co-tribal member Gene Sampson,
37:37he found two massive sets
37:38of footprints,
37:39one about 14 inches long
37:41and the other was 17 inches.
37:44So just for comparison,
37:45the average men's shoe size
37:46in America is about
37:4710 and a half inches.
37:50Officer Drumeau's Bigfoot sighting
37:52is one of hundreds
37:52reported in the state
37:54going back a century.
37:56This experience changed my behavior.
37:58I started to question
37:59a lot of stuff.
38:01Obsessed with finding answers,
38:03he launches his own investigation.
38:05Hoping to prove
38:06Bigfoot's existence.
38:08So what I was doing
38:09was basically trying to predict
38:10travel routes
38:11over the top of mountains.
38:15The terrain dictates
38:17the travel of all the animals
38:18because they're going to take
38:19the path of least resistance
38:21to get from point A to point B.
38:23And there's going to be
38:23specific routes
38:24that they use to do so.
38:27And so I studied maps
38:29and I had like 50 game cameras.
38:32I'd place them in an area
38:34that I thought
38:34that they were going
38:35to walk through.
38:39For years,
38:40his cameras managed
38:41only to capture images
38:43of local wildlife.
38:47That is,
38:48until November 11, 2010.
38:50I remember everything
38:51about that day.
38:57That particular day
38:58was very calm and quiet.
39:00I was not on duty,
39:04so I'm not carrying a gun.
39:09I went to this first camera
39:10and I found
39:11what looked like a track.
39:14Human shape
39:15and about 17 inches long,
39:17eight inches across
39:18the ball of the foot.
39:19And that's the first evidence
39:20that I had seen
39:20since I'd been coming back
39:21into this area.
39:22And the track was right
39:23next to the camera,
39:24so I thought,
39:24high potential,
39:25I could have a picture
39:26of one on it.
39:28So I went through
39:29the process,
39:29pulled the card,
39:30re-armed it,
39:31put a new card in,
39:32and I'm making my way
39:34to the second camera.
39:39And I started to hear
39:41what distinctly sounded like
39:43something was snapping twigs.
39:53I could hear it clearly,
39:55but there was nothing there.
40:01And so,
40:02against better judgment,
40:04I decided that I was going
40:05to overcome the fear
40:07and continue.
40:13So I get to the second camera.
40:17I pulled the card out.
40:20And then I heard
40:21this really loud
40:23and deep groan
40:24and a growl.
40:28It sounded like
40:29it was right on top of me.
40:35In one motion,
40:36as it's getting down
40:37to the ground,
40:38it shoots across
40:39like a big gorilla.
40:42Immediately,
40:42my heart sank.
40:45Officer Drameau
40:46estimates the creature
40:47to be eight feet tall
40:49and weighing 800
40:50to 1,000 pounds.
40:53The thing could just
40:54grab you
40:54and it would be over
40:55like that quick.
40:57I wanted to get
40:58the hell out of there
40:59and get my ass
41:00back to my car
41:01as fast as I could.
41:08I had to go through
41:09a bunch of sticker bushes,
41:11but I didn't even care.
41:12I just went right
41:13through it.
41:23I've been in
41:24many, many
41:25life and death situations.
41:27It was
41:27a million times
41:29more terrifying
41:30than anything
41:31I had ever experienced
41:32ever before.
41:32In the aftermath,
41:38Officer Drameau remembers
41:39the memory card
41:40from the trail camera
41:41and the track
41:42he saw in front of it.
41:43I checked the SD cards
41:45and there's pictures
41:46on them,
41:46but there's no animals
41:47in them.
41:50Prior to me seeing
41:51the one in La Push,
41:52I didn't believe
41:53in their existence.
41:55It just,
41:56it starts to challenge
41:57everything that you
41:57thought you ever believed.
41:58Law enforcement officers
42:05deal in hard evidence.
42:07They rely on training
42:08and logic
42:09to solve crimes
42:10and keep the peace.
42:11But when the unexplained
42:13becomes their next call,
42:14the line between duty
42:15and survival
42:17disappears.
42:17The End
42:23The End
