Lanying Grand Canyon (兰英大峡谷) is one of China’s most spectacular natural wonders, located in Wuxi County, Chongqing. Known as the deepest canyon in the region, the valley stretches over 100 km with an average depth of more than 1,500 m and dramatic narrow walls carved by millions of years of geological change.
What Makes It Unique
The canyon’s landforms are extremely dramatic and rugged, with steep cliffs, sharp peaks, and misty views that create a “painted landscape” feel.
In autumn, the valley is filled with brilliant red and orange foliage, making it a top destination for fall color viewing.
The Legendary Cliff Road — 天路
One of the most famous highlights here is the Cliff Road (挂壁公路), also called Lanying Tianlu (兰英天路). This narrow road—only about 1.2 km long and less than 3 m wide—is carved directly into the sheer canyon wall, creating a breathtaking route that seems to cling to the mountain itself.
It took local villagers 4 years and 3 months of painstaking work with simple tools to build this “sky road,” turning it into the only transportation link between remote Lanying Village and the outside world.
One side of the road faces a vertical cliff, while the other overlooks a drop of over 1,000 m, offering both excitement and awe-inspiring views.
The scenic road has become a popular adventure destination for travelers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience one of China’s most dramatic mountain roads.

How to Get There?
By Car (Recommended / Most Convenient):
Drive from Chongqing City along the G42 Shanghai–Chengdu Expressway and local roads to Wuxi County, then follow signs toward Lanying Grand Canyon Scenic Area.
The entire journey from central Chongqing typically takes around 3–4 hours by car.
By Public Transport:
Take a long-distance bus or train from Chongqing to Wuxi County, then local transport or taxi services head toward the canyon entrance.
Once at the canyon area, you can drive or walk to different viewpoints and the Cliff Road access points. Basic tourist infrastructure like viewing platforms and facilities have been added around popular areas to improve your experience.
