00:00Now it's to sit down with Will Arnett and Laura Dern.
00:02Hey, you two.
00:04Your new film, Is This Thing On?, is about love, divorce, stand-up comedy, and Bradley Cooper with facial hair.
00:09I think people will take away different things from it, but what does it mean to you?
00:13Well, I just said this morning as I was walking in,
00:17I'm so grateful that this is the movie I get to talk about in my life right now
00:22because genuinely it made me so hopeful and grateful.
00:27Don't ambush me like this in front of the boys. You suck.
00:31You suck.
00:32Will, how nervous were you on day one of filming with Laura?
00:35I was nervous. If the scale is 1 to 10, probably a million.
00:39And, you know, it was, and I said that to her.
00:42I kind of had this moment early on where I admitted to Laura.
00:46I said, you know, she's, I so admire her work over all the years, everything she's done.
00:52I look up to her. She's such a beautiful artist and performer and all of these things.
00:57And I was, and I said, I'm going to be honest with you.
00:59I'm, you know, I, I, I'm intimidated by it.
01:02And, and, and I, this is, I'm going into deeper water than I've ever been before.
01:07And she was so gracious and, and gentle and just really tremendous partner throughout this whole process.
01:15And I, yeah, I admire her even more now.
01:17I love the way this movie was shot.
01:20It really pulls you in.
01:22Bradley Cooper directed it and co-wrote it with you, Will.
01:25How would you both describe Bradley as a director?
01:28He was embedded with us in these performances, in the discovery, in real time, during takes.
01:37There's no gap.
01:38You know, he's, he's not calling in direction from 50 feet away from a,
01:41he's in the scene talking to us while we're in the scene and, and walking through it.
01:47And the camera is there.
01:48It's not observing.
01:50It's part of the action.
01:52Laura, what's one thing you and Bradley bonded over or you had in common that surprised you?
01:56What did you and Bradley bond over?
01:57How dumb I am?
01:59No.
02:00Did you?
02:00By the way, that is the only dumb thing I've ever heard you say.
02:05Because you're the smartest person I've ever met in my entire life.
02:08I think Bradley and I bonded when we first met on how much we love movies.
02:15And I think the three of us shared that.
02:17I think we also together all bonded over a longing to figure out how you talk about this thing.
02:26I think we all bonded through our own experiences of longing in our wanting to figure that out,
02:34to, to try to explore it in this movie, which was deeply personal, I think, to all of us.
02:40And that was such a gift.
02:41You cheated.
02:42No.
02:43You didn't cheat and you get a divorce?
02:44Oh, that's some white guy.
02:46We saw that Smartless got a Golden Globe Best Podcast nom.
02:50Are you going to write a speech just in case or is that bad luck?
02:53I'll leave the speech writing to Sean.
02:57I'll leave it to Sean.
02:58He's already written it.
03:00He's actually written all the speeches to all the nominees for every category.
03:05He wrote, he's written Amy's acceptance speech already.
03:11Will and Laura, thank you so much for dropping by today.
