00:00Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, called for national unity and
00:16economic diversification to defend the country's sovereignty against external
00:20aggression. The United Nations experts, through a statement, strongly condemn the
00:28large-scale military action carried out by the United States against the Bolivarian
00:32Republic of Venezuela, the bombardment of Caracas and other cities, and the
00:37forcible abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. And in the United
00:46States, the shooting of a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman by ICE on Wednesday has
00:52sparked a nationwide condemnation. Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra
01:02GarcĂa from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:07Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, called for national unity and
01:24economic diversification to defend the country's sovereignty against external
01:27aggressions, while receiving Wednesday the formal notification by the country's
01:32national assembly of the beginning of the new six-year legislative term, 2026-2031.
01:38Rodriguez called on all political sectors, including the opposition, to move
01:43forward in unity and heal the wounds caused by extremism. On economic matters, she
01:49emphasized that although the United States is the destination for 27% of exports, the
01:56country will continue to diversify its markets with the public and private
02:01sectors throughout the world. Finally, the acting head of state underscored that
02:07sovereignty and independence are supreme values for the Republic, and highlighted the
02:13importance of moving forward with new legal frameworks for the country's development.
02:17I want to emphasize something, because there is currently a lot of manichaeism surrounding
02:31Venezuela-Venezuela-United States relations.
02:37The first thing I must say is that there is a stain on our relations that has never occurred
02:43in our history. But it should also be noted that it is not extraordinary or irregular.
02:49For example, 71% of Venezuela's exports are concentrated in eight countries, and of that 71%, 27% are destined
03:03for the United States.
03:05In this context, the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, assured that in the midst of difficult times,
03:14the main commitment is to defend independence and the right of the people to live in peace.
03:23In these difficult, turbulent, painful times that our Republic is experiencing, we are determined to defend
03:31the most sacred things we have, our independence, to defend our sacred territory,
03:39defending our people's right to live freely, to live in peace, to live with the greatest treasure bequeated to us by the Liberator of America,
03:53SimĂłn BolĂvar, which is freedom and independence.
04:00Rodriguez also informed about the six major areas that the legislative power will be focused on during the
04:07new term, highlighting the defense of the Venezuelan people as a fundamental one.
04:11I don't want to go on too long, but we are going to focus the efforts of the legislative branch on six
04:22major areas, the achievement and implementation of peace, the pursuit and achievement of economic growth
04:30and prosperity for the Republic, the consolidation of the people's power plans that had already been
04:36proposed at the time and had already been rapidly developed by President Nicolás Maduro.
04:49The strengthening of new modalities of economic actions, specifically the efforts that has been put
04:56into the new enterprises and how the National Assembly has accompanied that effort, developing innovative
05:03legislative instruments to collaborate and a fundamental element, the defense of Venezuelans,
05:09the defense of peace and the defense of the lives of our compatriots.
05:16Branches of the Venezuelan public powers gathered on Wednesday to express their unwavering support for
05:22the acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, and to demand the immediate and unconditional release of the
05:28constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro Moros, and the first lady, Celia Flores. The higher state officials
05:34agreed that the illegal detention of President Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, is an imperial aggression
05:41and also an unfounded political persecution by the imperialist regime of the United States,
05:46seeking to destabilize Venezuela and undermine its democracy. The authorities expressed their total
05:52loyalty to the acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, and affirmed that she has the full support of the
05:58state to guarantee governance, national peace, and the continuity of social programs.
06:10Also, the Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Justao Cabello, informed on Wednesday
06:16that at least 100 people were killed in the United States military attack on January 3rd.
06:22In this regard, Justao Cabello strongly condemned the military attack by the US government
06:27on the South American country and emphasized that these actions had repercussions on the civilian
06:32population. He also denounced that the United States violated all the rules of international coexistence
06:39and pointed out that the whole world knows that Nicolás Maduro is a prisoner of war.
06:51In this regard, Justao Cabello is a prisoner of war.
06:53Justao Cabello is a prisoner of war.
06:54Justao Cabello is a prisoner of war.
07:02Venezuela's social groups continue to mobilize, demanding the release of President Nicolás Maduro
07:07and first combatant Celia Flores. During the demonstrations, commune members reiterated
07:13their commitment to peace and the nation's institutions. In this sense,
07:18the Ministry of People's Power for the communes and social leaders affirmed that the mobilization
07:23reiterated the condemnation of the US illegal attack and its attempts at domination.
07:28After several days of mobilization to defend the national sovereignty,
07:33the Venezuelan people assured that they will continue their active struggle
07:37for the release of the presidential couple. The United Nations experts through statements strongly
07:49condemn the large-scale military action carried out by the United States against the Bolivarian
07:53Republic of Venezuela, the bombardment of Caracas and other cities, and the forcible abduction
07:59of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The commune states,
08:03these actions represent a grave manifest and a deliberate violation of the most fundamental
08:11principles of international law, set a dangerous precedent, and risk destabilizing the entire region
08:17and the world. United Nations experts also express Venezuela's vast natural resources, including the
08:24largest proven oil reserves in the world, must not be cynically exploited, though through thinly veiled
08:33pretext to legitimize military aggression, foreign occupation, or regime change strategies.
08:39The statement emphasized, the future of Venezuela must be determined by the Venezuelan people alone,
08:45in full sovereignty through dialogue and accountability, ensuring the meaningful and equal
08:51participation of women in all decision-making processes. The communique also concludes, we urge
08:58United Nations member states to condemn the aggression by the United States and act
09:02decisively to hold all actions contrary to international law.
09:13As the results of a survey conducted by the national market research and data analytics firm,
09:20Zhigov revealed a growing public opposition in the United States to its recent military intervention in
09:27Venezuela. According to the survey, 46 percent of respondents disapprove of the U.S. operation
09:34against the South American nation, while 39 percent was in favor. The results contrast dramatically with
09:42the support registered during the invasion of Panama in 1989, when an overwhelmingly 82 percent of U.S.
09:49citizens supported the arrest of then ruler Manuel Antonio Noriega following a military intervention.
09:55The gap between the two polls shows a significant change in public perception and suggests greater
10:02questioning of Washington's interventionist policies in Latin America compared to previous decades.
10:08Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, activists from the revolutionary communist group marched to the Guardian headquarters in London
10:20to denounce the complicity of the newspaper with the U.S. rhetoric used to attack Minnesota's sovereignty.
10:27The protesters referred to the publication as a mouthpiece of British imperialism alleging its consistently spread lies about Venezuela.
10:38Furthermore, the activists denounced the support of Britain's armed forces to the most recent aggression
10:44of the U.S. military and its seizure of Venezuelan-linked oil tankers in the North Atlantic and Caribbean Sea.
10:51The group also expressed that there's solidarity with the South American nation and its people
10:57and vowed to keep mobilizing in favor of respect for international law.
11:09And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
11:13Telestude English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
11:21Welcome back to From the South. We go to Cuba, giving the homage paid to the 32 Cuban citizens killed by the United States military in the January 3rd attack on Venezuela
11:50Foreign Minister Bruno RodrĂguez expressed a rejection of the Cuban people to the threats of the U.S. imperialism against the country.
11:58Now they are saying that Cuba is next, we tell them to remember the Cuban people through their history, and that today, like Masio, we tell them that whoever attempts to seize Cuba, will gather, only the dust of its soil soaked in blood, if they do not perish, in the fight.
12:22The Chinese government also condemned them on Thursday. The hegemonic actions of the United States regarding Venezuela and reaffirm its commitment to the deepening economic and trade relations with the South American nation.
12:40The hegemonic actions of the United States seriously violate international law, infringe Venezuela's sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in the Latin American region.
12:53China firmly opposes this. Economic and trade cooperation between China and Venezuela is cooperation between sovereign states, protected by international law and the laws of both countries, and no other country has the right to interfere.
13:08Regardless of changes in Venezuela's political situation, China's commitment to deepening economic and trade relations with Venezuela will not change.
13:17As the president of the United States, Donald Trump increases the pressure over Denmark with threats of taking control over Greenland, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed a meeting with Danish officials for next week.
13:33The meeting was requested by Danish Prime Minister Medvedic Sen, after the Trump administration doubled down on its intentions to take over the strategic Arctic island.
13:45Let's recall that tensions on this matter escalated on Tuesday, after the White House said that the use of military force to achieve its purposes is not off the table.
13:55Meanwhile, Washington justified its expansionist ambition under the pretext of curbing the influence of Russia and China in the Arctic, attempting to impose the purchase of the territory as a measure of national security.
14:09Also in the United States, an agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE killed a woman, identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode, during an immigration-related operation in the Minnesota and city of Minneapolis.
14:27The killing has sparked nationwide condemnation on Wednesday night, citizens in Chicago held an emergency vigil to honor the victim and condemn the ICE persecution of migrants all over the country, as well as its current operation Midway Blitz in Chicago.
14:46So far, the Trump administration has deployed nearly 2,000 federal agents to Minnesota, where the incident took place as part of an ongoing persecution of undocumented migrants.
15:02They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense.
15:09Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bullshit.
15:14This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.
15:26To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis.
15:31We do not want you here.
15:34Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite.
15:41People are being hurt.
15:43Families are being ripped apart.
15:46Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy, are being terrorized, and now somebody is dead.
15:56Gun violence in the United States claimed more victims on Wednesday evening when a shooting in Salt Lake City, Utah, left to death and six injured.
16:06According to a report by the Salt Lake City Police Department, the shooting took place outside a Mormon chapel, where a funeral was underway, shortly after 7.30 p.m. local time.
16:17So far, police has failed to identify or capture any suspects.
16:23Meanwhile, three of the surviving victims are in critical condition and three are in unknown condition.
16:30This violent incident evidences the growing insecurity crisis in the country, while the far-right government of Donald Trump refuses to take measures towards gun control.

17:04Welcome back to From the South.
17:26We go to France.
17:27In Paris, French farmers are heading a protest over a free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, and the way the government is handling a cattle disease.
17:38Farmers from the Coordination Rural Union called for the demonstration that entered the center of Paris on Thursday, while blocking sites of the French capital in protest against a free trade agreement.
17:51The European Union is set to sign with South American nations.
17:55On the end, farmers fear the deal could flood the country with sheep food imports, while at the same time are angry about the government's handling of a highly contagious cattle disease.
18:07They are also demanding an end to the cow-culling practice imposed by the government and advocate for vaccination instead.
18:25Torrential rains in Kosovo have triggered floods and powered outages across several regions, as emergency teams continue to evacuate those affected.
18:42Heavy rainfall in recent days has caused rivers to overflow, submerging homes, vehicles, and roads in several municipalities.
18:50In this context, authorities reported efforts continue to evacuate hundreds.
18:55In the central town of Glogovk alone, around 20 families were transported to safer locations after water damaged a local power station.
19:04Precisely, widespread powered outages have been reported, with floods also reaching local water basins and pipes, forcing some regions to suspend drinking water supplies.
19:17In this scenario, emergency services remain on high alert, as weather experts forecast more rain for the coming days.
19:24In the occupied West Bank, at least seven citizens were injured.
19:42In the occupied West Bank, at least seven citizens were injured.
19:47by tear gas attacks during an Israeli raid carried out on Tuesday night in the Aqaba region near Tubas.
20:01Sionist forces raided residential areas in the city of Aqaba, with several military vehicles firing stun grenades and tear gas canisters.
20:11In this scenario, emergency services confirmed that ambulance crews treated at least six cases of tear gas inhalation and one case of physical assault,
20:21after Israeli soldiers beat a resident during the operation.
20:25Israeli military forces also attacked other areas in northern West Bank, including the cities of Nablus and Janine.
20:33In addition, the United Nations warned of the need for assistance and shelter in the Gaza Strip.
20:48According to reports, nearly 65,000 families were affected by the winter storms in December.
20:54The international organization emphasized the importance of moving toward more lasting solutions,
21:00including the repair of houses and the provision of land for the relocation of Palestinian families.
21:13In Syria, clashes between the army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have left several dead and tens of thousands displaced in the city of Aleppo.
21:23The de facto Syrian President, Amer al-Shara, a former Daesh and al-Qaeda commander, declared two Kurdish neighborhoods as legitimate targets in Aleppo after the escalation of violence on Tuesday in the region.
21:37Kurdish forces accused al-Shara of carrying a criminal attempt of force displacement and denounced the army's use of heavy artillery against Kurdish neighborhoods.
21:48In this context, local sources report that over 45,000 citizens have fled the city.
21:54The latest clashes took place after the army and the SDF failed to implement a deal signed in March that attempted to integrate the Kurdish-led forces into Syria's new state institutions.
22:15And after this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
